Well that had been a failure. He'd sat in the bush for just over an hour, hoping that the dragonfruit would attract something at least, even like a squirrel or rabbit would be nice, that'd be something at least to show for his work. But no, of course not that'd be too easy, instead he caught nothing at all and had cramp from sitting in such an uncomfortable position for so long. In short hunting apparently was not one of the things that he was very good at.
Unfortunately enough for him Kevin wanted meat, and so it was either hunt it down himself or go into one of the cities and buy some, considering he didn't know where he could buy meat in any of the cities nearby or even if they sold it, hunting was probably better. It'd have to be either New Skaldira or innorsford if he wanted to go into a city for it, and both of those were well over a week's journey there and back, in that amount of time he was sure that even with his fairly lacklustre hunting skills he could catch something right?
Before he continued with the hunting though Kell extricated himself from the bush, unfolding himself from his uncomfortable position and stretching out cramped muscles. If he was going to be in there for a bit longer then surely it made sense for him to at least stretch and remove the cramp before he went back, sure hte cramps and discomfort would come back but there was no reason not to relieve them while he could. Once that was done he replaced himself back in the bush, sword ready again, this time he rested the blade on a stick inside of the bush to lessen the strain of his arm, being sure that he could still move the blade quickly should the need arise. The dragonfruit still lay in front of the bush as an invitation to any animals wandering by.

He was lucky enough this time, several rabbits had come past in the time he'd been in the bush, each falling prey to a quick thrust. While the rabbits might not be all that substantial they were still meat, and three of them would hopefully satisfy Kevin's craving for some, if these three didn't then Kevin would have to go out and get himself some, hunting definitely wasn't something that Kell enjoyed. It could be just because of the completely rubbish way he was doing it but that was because he had no clue otherwise, he'd never hunted before, his way had worked though and he had some rabbits to show for it.
Kell stretched out his muscles for several minutes, once again the muscle cramps had set in, getting out of the bush had been an incredibly painful endeavour, it had been more like falling out for all the use his muscles were. But he was out and slowly regaining the ability to use his muscles properly again, although there were various aches and pains as one would expect after spending quite a while in a very very uncomfortable bush.
Once he'd sorted out his body Kell tied the rabbits to his belt and headed back, they were for Kevin after all so it'd be best if he actually gave them to the smith, and the sooner the better because he had some things he wanted made as well. A few solutions to issues that he was having, mainly the problem that he could feel his mana draining at a rather alarming rate and he needed to stop that from happening.
The walk back was nothing special, no more black crows jumped out of bushes at him nor did any other kind of demon, animal or creature block him, it was a nice peaceful walk, the pride and satisfaction of having caught the three rabbits causing Kell to hum a little tune as he moved.

His entrance into the makeshift forge this time was announced by him dangling the caught rabbits in front of Kevin's face as he stood cleaning his workbench, "Rabbit was all I could get, and I had a hard enough time getting that, but here's the meat you asked for." Kell began, passing them over to Kevin before taking a seat on another workbench. "Speaking of getting things for the other, I've got a couple of things I wouldn't mind you making if you have the time."
At this Kevin looked up expectant, waiting for what he assumed would be a rather tedious task once again, the last time him having to craft something for Kell ending in working sets but plenty of wasted materials. "Nothing to difficult, just some simple things. Two rings made from iron and a lantern, what material works best for a lantern?" They now had access to more than just simple iron, so if another material would do the job better and they had access to that material then why not use it.
"Tin, tin makes the best lanterns. As for the rings why iron? Why not a gold one? A gold ring at least makes you look as if you're wealthy, there's no point at all in an iron ring." It was a good question, and one that Kell didn't particularly have an answer to, he didn't want to tell Kevin that it needed to be iron in order for him to enchant it, gold did hold enchantments better but they had much less of it and he was loathe to waste what they did have. Iron would do anyway for now, he only needed a couple of minor ones to top himself up, the drain from his pocket was quite severe and he needed to counteract it. "Just iron for now, it'll stand up so long as no one looks to closely, and we don't have much gold, what we do have could be needed elsewhere so there's no need to waste it on aesthetics." It was a bad excuse but the only one he had.
In short order tin and iron was brought to the workshop and Kevin started out, hammering the tin into shape without the usage of the furnace, claiming that it made the process much easier. Who was Kell to judge, he knew nothing about crafting.

Once all was done Kell slipped the two rings onto his fingers and the lantern was clipped to his sash, it had been quite a productive day to say the least, he'd done some hunting and thought up solutions to some of his problems, now all he needed to do was put them into action. "I'm going to the warehouse to check our stocks, we've only used up a couple of bits but I've yet to familiarise myself with all the new material we are picking up now that things are up and running around here again." It was a lie of course, but only a little white lie, and he felt that keeping the fact that he had magic a secret was more important than a little white lie.
Once inside the warehouse he drew the doors closed behind him, lighting the newly made lantern to give him some sort of light, it wouldn't do for someone to just walk in while he was putting his plan into action would it. The lantern held up well, casting a strong beam across the shelves filled with various materials. It was such a change to go from having barely a couple of pieces of iron to suddenly having a warehouse full of materials with which he could get Kevin to craft near enough anything that he wanted. In such a short space of time he'd gotten the various mines and mills and farms working, the people of this small county had more jobs and the income of resources was always useful, even if just to sell for some extra coin in the coffers.
After taking a moment of pride Kell got down to the real work, taking off both iron rings and placing them on a vertically placed log he carefully set in place, sitting on another log in front while he worked. Starting with the first of the rings Kell picked it up, placing it in the palm of his hand and gathering up his mana, the flow was substantially less than it should be, the pocket siphoning off more than he'd anticipated in order for it to be maintained. The rings were his solution to that, if he could give them the ability to enhance his own mana regeneration then he supposed he could balance out the flow of what was being taken. It was theoretical of course at this point, but he was about to put it into practice.

The first attempt backfired, the ring going skittering across the floor and being warm to the touch, he was lucky that it hadn't exploded the amount of power he'd tried to fit into the thing, maybe a slightly calmer approach was needed. Rather than forcing all of the mana in at once he fed it in slowly, the same amount just as a constant flow instead of a sudden burst of power. This approach seemed to work and the ring retained what he gave it, even once he let go of it and placed it back on the log.
Picking up the second ring Kell attempted to replicate the process, feeding it a constant stream of what little mana he had left, the pocket having drained near all of it by this point, he wondered what would happen to the items within the pocket if he ran out of mana and the connection was severed. Surely they'd just stay there right?
For now that point was moot forever, he needed to concentrate on the task at hand.

With both of his enchantments completed Kell stood up, near tripping over his blade where he'd left it on the floor. He cursed to himself before leaning down and picking up the blade, the sash and tools soon following, hanging each before him form one of the storage racks. They were much better off up there for now, they looked neater, and it meant that if they were up there Kell had less of a chance of slicing his foot open or falling over headfirst onto his sword. Neither of those ideas held a lot of appeal to the Half-Drokagr.
The sword. Kell's eyes lingered on it for a moment, was it not made of iron also? He assumed so. Iron held enchantments, as shown by the rings on his fingers and the tools he'd enchanted previously. What was to stop him from also enchanting his sword? The blade by itself wasn't a particularly effective weapon, it was sturdy weapon but didn't hold much of an edge and wasn't as well made as he'd thought. It would have to do for now though, he could get Kevin to make him a new blade, but he had no need for one, there was nothing to trouble him within his own County and he didn't anticipate another uninvited visitor like the black crow from last time. It's not as if he'd go out of his own county seeking fights either, he wasn't the kind of person to pick a fight for no reason, and as things stood currently there wasn't a reasoned fight that he could pick which he actually would have a chance of winning.
But there was nothing wrong with empowering his blade was there? Until he got through his priorities enough to get Kevin to forge him a new one, or a reason arrived for him to actually need another, he'd use this one, and it wasn't going to take much out of him to just make this one a little stronger. Kell took the blade off of the storage rack, holding it in his hands and allowing mana to spill from his hands and surround the blade.

Mana flowed around the blade, covering it's surface and spinning around it faster and faster, following Kell's arm which also spun around the blade, however as soon as Kell closed his hand up into a fist it was all sucked straight into the blade like water down a plughole. Kell allowed himself a small smile, his efforts were paying off and he was finding it easier and easier to do this. Kell sat for a few moments, breathing slightly faster than was normal from his exertions. Although using magic caused him mininmal physical exhaustion it did cause some, still though most of the heavy breathing was from his excitement more than anything else. He'd managed to near enough solve his drainage problems, in the process giving himself a slightly stronger weapon and putting into practice a way to increase his own mana regeneration. If he could get his hands on a high enough quantity of something better like gold or even Cordite then the possibilities were limited only by the magics that he knew.
If even simple iron could hold enchantments to regenerate like these he wondered what Cordite could do, if a regeneration enchantment was possible for your mana why wouldn't the same be a possibility to speed up the bodies natural healing. If he were to get Cordite, able to hold several enchantments at once, and layer it with the same bodily regeneration enchantment over and over would the wearer become invincible to all bar instant death? Would it be possible to speed the bodies regeneration to such an extent. If not then what of the idea of having infinite mana at your disposal, power regeneration and increasing enchants layered on top of each other to the point where one could cast their spells at a continuous rate and not deplete their mana in the slightest.
It was an interesting thought, the possibilities that enchanted items could bring to him, but for that to work he'd need to become a stronger mage. Doubtess he was progressing fast, but even the loweliest foot soldier would likely wipe the floor with him at this point, and if the SKC found out that he were a mage that had disobeyed their law they were more likely to send a mage hunter after him than just footmen. A mage hunter would have far more knowledge and power than he, he needed to become strong enough to at least protect his own little county. Either that or find some other way to protect them, he knew it was beyond his power to protect the entirety of Cruinthe from the rule of Julgrava but at the very least he could try and protect his own people.

In the end Kell fell asleep in that warehouse, having made a mental note of the resources they had available and then sat down to take a breather. The combination of the amount of magic he'd worked and the hunting had really taken it out of him without him even realising it had so that several seconds after sitting down he was fast asleep without even time to stop himself.
Awakening was another painful experience, having slept at a very odd angle on a log not in the slightest bit designed to be slept on Kell found he'd managed to once again cause most of his body to hurt. He was rested though at least, the sleep had been deep and uninterrupted, although he'd paid for it for the cricked neck and shoulder, but sleep was good and in his case evidently needed. Falling asleep with all of his equipment on was a new experience, it hadn't really made a difference to his sleep nor to his waking process other than meaning he now didn't have to put it all on separately, although there was a slight indent in his leg where he'd been leaning on the pommel of his sword all night.
Once everything was repositioned on his person to his liking Kell left the warehouse, closing the great doors behind him with a resounding boom before locking them up and placing the key in a pocket, he'd done all that was needed in there for now, as well as having taken a tally of their resources. They had a lot of raw material, more than Kell knew what to do with at this moment in time, there wasn't much of any particular rarity or expense in there just sheer quantity with nothing to use it on. If things kept up how they were he'd soon have to designate a second warehouse for more materials to be held in, he knew that once he'd sorted things around here resources would come flowing in but he hadn't expected production to be quite as fast as it was.

It was easy to see that he needed more practice, as things stood currently the most he could do was send unshaped mana at someone and of course keep up his little pocket. Something defensive would be quite nice, a shield of some sort that'd help to protect him would be the best idea of course. A shield was something he'd never attempted to create before though, although to his mind the theory behind it seemed quite simple, but then again theory and practice didn't always match up.
Kell returned quickly to the manor, thinking of that as probably the safest place for him to practice, no one would come into the manor house uninvited, and to his knowledge the only person that knew he was in there was in fact Kevin, his own people had very little idea that he existed. This did bother him somewhat, but it was for their own safety, a way to prevent the crown from attacking them should they find out that the actual count of this land was a Half-Drokagr, and a mage at that, although he had no idea if htey'd be able to ascertain the latter. Still it was for his people's own protection that as far as they were concerned Kevin was the count of their lands and had put into place all of the new projects that had been happening around the area.
Once settled inside the manor Kell began his work, so far he'd worked only with unshaped mana, the furthest he'd gone had been imbuing that into items. For this however he'd need to somehow shape and harden it, draw it out into a shield in front of him. His mana was still rather depleted but it was slowly climbing, it seemed that the rings had gone beyond even what he'd expected and instead of simply cancelling out the draw of his pocket they gave him an excess as well so that his own reserves were slowly filling back up to what they should be.

He wondered if in his current state he could take on one of those crows, if one had showed up then who was to say another couldn't. Kell knew he was stronger now there was no denying that, his magic had greatly increased from where it had been at that point and now he could attack with it, soon he'd be able to defend with it as well. He knew very little about how strong the crow actually was other than the fact that even just seeing it had frightened him, and with Kevin filling in what he'd been told of it in children's tales it seemed to be quite a strong opponent. Kell shook his head, he probably couldn't face it now and live, unless some absolute fluke gave him the win, but that'd never happen.
It was a goal though, if he could become stronger than one of those crows then he'd stand a decent chance of protecting his own land, as far as he was aware they were quite strong opponents so if he could beat one he'd have to be quite strong as well surely. Granted he had lots of advantages that the crow didn't such as the ability to bear arms and armour and enchant those arms and armour, enchantments were useful as they could make items several times stronger if he could practice until his enchantments became stronger. He also had magic, although from the sounds of it they did as well, but he'd soon have a much larger variety of it, and if he could get enough different spells under his belt to prepare himself then surely some variation of them would work.
But for now shielding was his aim, if he could create a decent shield then he'd be much stronger, that and he hopefully then wouldn't die to the most minor of blows, the shields would soak up some of the damage at least. To begin with Kell materialised his power in his palm, cupping it with the other palm before spreading the two apart and forming a line which he then attempted to broaden into a shield in front of him.

The line fizzled out as it expanded, he hadn't put in enough mana for the area that he was trying to cover, or at least that was what he thought. It could just simply be because his reserves were so diminished, bbut he refused to stop because of just that.
Trying again Threshold 80
Kell cursed lightly as the second attempt ended much the same as the first, except this time he'd lost control of it, drawing his hands apart too quickly and instead of creating as he'd liked sending a bolt straight up into the roof and causing a small burn mark to form there. It wasn't too much of an issue considering this entire manor needed to be redecorated anyway. The issue however was that he wasn't quite grasping it, he'd keep trying until he did get it though.
He finally succeeded. A silver shield formed itself between his hands in the air in front of him, it wavered slightly but looked strong enough to his eye. This was only the beginning though, a shield in front of himself was useful but not as much as he'd like, the next step was to actually get it around his body, that way it would afford him much more protection. Reaching out Kell picked up his sword, he could still hold things as well luckily enough, it worked just as he'd like. Now came the harder part, he needed to surround his whole body in this for it to beofmuch use, what good was just having one arm shielded.

Now he was in business, he could shield himself from harm to the extent of his power, but shielding surely could go beyond shielding yourself? If the shields were physical things that you could touch then surely there were more possibilities than simply that. Could they not even be used as platforms? You can touch them but not go through them so surely you could also stand on them? Create a shield then stand on it to reach a higher point, or even use it to block someone off or a doorway off. That could be a useful idea, it'd be a good way to keep yourself out of harm's way, or to get to somewhere that you can't reach. The possibilities were much larger than simply shielding yourself from harm.
For now though he needn't explore those possibilities, he knew he could create a basic shield and one surrounding himself so anything more was simply the application of said shielding. That could be done without practice as it was simply the placement of the thing, and that you'd have to decide on an encounter by encounter basis anyway. Still though it was an interesting prospect, using magic outside of the ways expected could give him an edge if ever he needed it, most would expect only the simple ways of shielding yourself and others, not expecting you to be using them to climb. One idea struck him particularly, if you could make a shield then use it as a platform, stand upon it and move it around in the sky then you'd be out of most harm. Only those with bows or other ranged weaponry could really hit you while you rain down magical attacks and arrows upon them also. A mobile attacking platform unreachable by all but ranged weaponry, now that was a tempting prospect.
Now that he'd thought of it he was itching to try it though, only at a low level this time of course, he didn't want to be falling from it and breaking his legs. This time he was attempting to make a horizontal shield, only about a foot off of the floor, enough so that he could simply step onto it and so if he fell of he wouldn't actually damage himself.

Placing one foot onto it and pressing down as hard as he could also didn't effect it, so the second foot was tentatively added and Kell was standing atop the shield. A smile made it's way onto his face, magic truly was an interesting tool to have, the things you could do with it were incredible. ·

For now maybe just steps were the best, instead of attempting to move the platform. If he tried to move it and went to fast he would likely fall off, that or crash into a wall, inside of his own home was probably not the best place to be practising this but it was the only place where he had where it was incredibly unlikely that anyone would see, and being seen using magic was something he wanted to avoid as much as was possible. The more people that knew he had magic the worse things were, it was his secret and his trump card so to speak, and a trump card was useless if everyone knew you had it, then they expected you to use it and it wouldn't have as great of an effect as people could prepare against it.
Kell jumped once on the platform, only a small jump just to test the properties of the platform he'd created. When his feet hit back on the shield it didn't seem to move, it remained fixed in place exactly where he'd created it, that was good at least, if he was going to attempt to use a shield as a platform for flight then it'd work best if it wasn't effected by other forces as then he could retain far more control over it. Stamping his feet and jumping a few more times Kell tested the platform in every simple way he could think of, he would be trusting his life on the strength of a shield like this one and so wanted to ensure that he wasn't just going to put his foot through it if he started moving about or jumping on it.
Once he decided it's strength was satisfactory he stepped off of it and allowed it to disappear, the applications of shields such as this one was a truly interesting idea and one he'd have to research and experiment with far more, if he could develop his skills in ways such as this then what he lacked in pure strength he should be able to make up for in ingenuity and application.

Pulling a sheaf of paper, quill and inkwell from one of the many draws about the room Kell sat himself down, he'd become so embroiled in the practical side of managing the county and of improving himself and his own magics that he'd somewhat neglected the paperwork side of things. Whilst he knew rough amounts of what they had coming in from their buildings and what they were making in terms of Ritz he had no full grasp of the exact amounts so while he had the time and no other particularly pressing matters to attend to there was no reason why he shouldn't take a break from things to sit down and do some paperwork.
Setting out the sheets on one side of the desk Kell took a seat and readied himself, he needed to figure out the exact income they were getting from the various buildings as then he could begin to properly count their usage versus what was coming in. He doubted that they were using near as much as was being produced but he planned to ramp up production again soon so a lot of resources would be used up in this process, therefore they'd need a lot more to be made, possibly even more land to farm and mine in order to meet these demands. If they did end up having an excess of resources he assumed that someone like Kable or even one of the city markets would always have need of excess material, and he could probably use the coin that it'd get him.
Unfortunately commerce wasn't a strong point of his, he was better at other things than figuring out how to make himself money, as shown by the poor financial state they were in. Setting pen to paper Kell tried to puzzle out what exactly was going on around the county.

So according to the calculations he'd made it was either they were making over nine thousand units of stone a month or they were making four. Neither of those seemed likely considering the fact that he'd not even seen a hundred units of stone so far but he'd definitely seen more than four. It sucked to be bad at the paperwork side, because while they could get along without it it'd be a very inefficient way to get along, something that Kell wasn't happy with at all.
Apparently his writing wasn't that great either, even a few minutes after having written down all that he had he was finding it difficult to actually figure out what on earth he'd written. He really needed to practice his handwriting some more, if he couldn't read his own writing all that well then what chance did someone have if he sent them a letter. It was then he remembered with shame the letter he had sent to Velara, Kell hung his head thinking that his writing must have looked like this when he sent it to her, how had she even managed to reply, his writing truly was atrocious. One side effect it seemed of spending all of your time reading and not much writing was that his writing had suffered so, something that he would aim to improve.
But still, he needed to do these calculations unfortunately, so he'd just have to power on through the hellish writing he was producing and try once again.

He managed to get a readable sheet from this one at least, after a few more tries and several more sheets of paper crumpled to one side of the desk he finally had a piece of paper in which it seems he'd managed to get what he wanted. Neat lines stared back at him, each detailing the amount of material that came from each of his buildings, sorted so that the produce of each building was grouped neatly together.
It was nice for him to see some sort of order on the paper, that and writing that he could actually still read a couple of minutes after having actually put it on the paper. Now that he had a more full idea of the production capacity of his land he was quite pleased, it seemed that they produced a fair amount of iron, always useful considering how much of a staple iron was to the building of most things. Also useful for him considering for now most of the items he'd need would have to be made of iron, it being one of the few resources he had that could hold an enchantment and the only one that he wouldn't be overly bothered about wasting due to it's relative abundance here. Lumber production wasn't to bad, not nearly as abundant as iron but sitll passable, stone however was quite lacking. Not that there was much of a need for stone, but it was still a useful resource to have and unfortunately he wasn't getting nearly enough of it as he'd like.
He could think of a few additions that could be made to the mines that could increase his income from it, a few could also be applied to the mills and lumber mills also but they'd require manpower to build. If he were to provide the workers with better tools and add more machinery to them then they'd run more efficiently, and it wouldn't even cost him that much to put it all in place.
