Dawn broke, the sun shining through the windows and into the eyes of the watching blacksmith, his watch having been the last. They'd been in the manor house all night, waiting and worrying about the possibility of attack from the crow, sleeping in shifts and near emptying their bowels at any moment. It was safe to say that it hadn't been a particularly pleasant night, but the two of them had survived it.
Kell awoke as a beam of sunlight hit his face, groggily mumbling and trying to turn over to avoid it's rays before his mind awoke. He stretched luxuriously, only slightly stopped as the sword in his hand hit a wall, he'd forgotten he had it in hand still. Surely with the coming of the sun the thing would be gone he reasoned, finally allowing the blade to drop from his stiff grasp, working his other hand over the stiff fingers in an attempt to loosen them out of the position they'd held all night, awake or asleep. Standing up from his spot on the floor Kell wandered to the window, peering out at the forest surrounding the manor house they'd taken shelter in, "No sign of it still, any chance it might still be out there?"
"I wouldn't think so, if it's not come and gotten us by now it's unlikely it will, the manor house is weak and we were easy prey, if it really wanted us it'd have us by now." Kevin grunted, covering up his still lingering fear with his usual gruff mask. The pick axe was leaned up against the wall by his post, he'd realised several hours ago it'd do him no good anyway and was just dead weight more than anything. Before he could lose his nerve Kevin walked to the door, inserting the key and pushing against it, flinging it wide open to admit the rays of the sun into the house.
A moment of nervous hesitation followed as both waited to see if the coast was clear, Kell on the verge of berating Kevin but lacking the necessary fortitude currently. "Well I guess we should head back, not too comfy in here. As I said, if it hasn't gotten us by now it doesn't want us." Kevin stated, before motioning Kell out, grabbign the pick axe on his way, and locking the door behind him, placing the key in the Drokagr's hand and beginning the walk back to his own home. "Happy housewarming."

The two reached Kevin's with no problem, the crow not having shown it's ugly face along the way leading them to believe they were safe, for now at least. Kell found himself bothered by the idea that something like this could happen so easily, that a demon such as that could walk straight into this land and there was no one strong enough around to stop it. He needed to get stronger, strong enough that he wasn't completely useless in a fight. If he was to have any hope of changing things he'd need to have the strength to ensure he could, something that currently he had near enough none of.
Kevin went into his hut, giving it only a cursory glance before deciding the crow hadn't made off with anything, coming outside to tell Kell as much. "It didn't take anything, we are lucky, it's as simple as that. If it'd made off with any of my tools i'd have beaten it back and blue"
"I seem to remember you telling me to run and that we couldn't fight it last night?"
"You remember wrongly, I just couldn't do anything with you hanging about like a deadweight."
"Yeah....that's how it went down, for sure."
"Don't you have some digging to do or something? I've spent enough time with you already, come get me when you need me, i'm going to get some things sorted."
"Have you got anything to eat? I'm sure you're going for food right now but I don't quite have much on me." His response being a salamander rhotbrot thrown into his face, which he frantically juggled before he caught, laughing to himself.
"If you need anywhere to store everything there's a warehouse just over there, it's no more than a minute away just hidden by the trees. You'll find it I'm sure." Followed by another key tossed at Kell before the blacksmith headed back into his house.
Kell was quite quick to ascertain that the large tower of rock looming over the trees was probably the best place for him to try mining, try it anywhere else and he'd have to go through layers of soil first, adding time he didn't want to waste. So seeing, he began walking over there, sword in his sash and pick-axe leaning against his shoulder.

This journey he'd taken at slightly more of a pace than the two he'd previously undertaken, mainly because this one would take him half a day at the most where the others had taken several. He wasn't quite so worried about tiring himself out on this one as compared to the others it was a sprint, although still obviously he couldn't sprint it, or probably even run it, he'd decided on speed walking.
When he finally got there he found himself staring up at the huge towering rock, it seemed as good a place as any for him to dig really, he needed the iron and stone that could be yielded up by this place, mainly iron. If he could get iron then he could make more tools, and more tools meant they were in business, then they could start on repairing the buildings that all seemed to have been destroyed in an incredibly harmful and seemingly random chain of events that had damaged the county incredibly from multiple angles. Once they'd gotten the infrastructure rebuilt more possibilities would open up to them, but for now he needed to lay a solid foundation on the land in order for it to become useful again.
He wouldn't have to have come and dig this all up by hand if they had a mine, but sadly the mine had been destroyed, and in order to build another one they would need raw materials that they didn't yet have, hence Kell having to do it all by hand for now. With that thought firmly in mind Kell swung the pick at the rock in front of him, repeatedly hammering it down with more strength than anything, he'd not done it before so he hadn't gotten the knack. For now strength and repeatedly smashing his pick into it would have to suffice.

Well, that had gone swimmingly really hadn't it? He hadn't really expected much due to his lack of experience mining, but he hadn't expected it to be quite this difficult. What more was there to it really than banging his pick-axe against the rocks and taking whatever he found. He'd found a piece of iron, that was always a positive of course, but one piece of iron wasn't quite enough for what he needed was it, he needed a lot more than one bit, and then some stone and wood and a million and one other things.
It'd been difficult work just to get this, he'd carved out a small hole in the side of the rock, dust and debris lay around him where it had lay, no small amount of the mess having gone directly onto him. It wasn't exactly clean work was it, but it was oddly satisfying to just do this, something that required very little thought and very monotonous action. Freed up the mind to think of other things, unfortunately those other things weren't useful when he saw how little he'd gotten from this. He didn't really know of a way that he could speed up the process, he was just one man after all.
One thought did come to him, magic. He had a very basic knowledge of it, of the basic usages of non-elemental magic and the theoretical side of imparting magic into objects, it was purely theoretical however as he'd never had much of a need to use it. Kell moved away from the rock debris and lowered himself into a cross legged position on the floor, the pick-axe across his legs in front of him. He thought it through for several minutes, he could probably enchant the pick-axe to yield more, he'd have to use his knowledge of metals and industry in order to do so but he was fairly sure he could do so.
It took him several seconds to coalesce his mana into a physical form, it having been a practice he'd neglected recently, he'd had no need to use magic and hadn't had much time for his practice while he travelled away from the initiative, it was like a muscle in the fact that if not used frequently it weakened and became more difficult to use. He held the power in his left hand for a second, focusing it and imbuing it with the desired properties before placing the hand onto the pick-axe head, allowing the magic to flow into it.
Enchanting the Pick-Axe Simple (30) Knowledge (10) Artificing I (5) Thaumaturgy I (5) Industry I (5) Threshold: 55 tZDyTgwz
Unfortunately enough for him, it fizzled, crackled and hissed a bit, but the enchant didn't stick, the mana was dispelled and the pick-axe remained as it was before he started. It was unfortunate but not entirely unexpected as he was incredibly out of practice, and his talents hadn't exactly been nurtured within Korasus, if anything he'd been told to pretend he didn't have them, what little training and knowledge of the arts he did have he'd picked up from trying many different things until they worked, that and the few tomes he could find on the subject.
Well if at first you don't succeed, try try again. And that was exactly what Kell did, once again holding it in his palm and imbuing the properties he desired, placing his palm onto the pick-axe and attempting to flow the mana through it.

This time it didn't even go into the pick-axe, it instead seemingly rebounded off the metal, causing a tingle in Kell's hand as it dispersed between his fingers. It was odd that it wouldn't hold, although iron was a metal with a low capacity for magic, it should still be able to hold an enchantment, that much he was fairly sure of.
Maybe he wasn't putting enough force into it, he'd been trying thus far to be quite subtle with it and simply let the mana flow in, maybe he hadn't been using enough of it and so the enchant wouldn't stick. So thinking, this time he allowed the mana to gatehr in his hand for a longer period of time, till there was near double the amount of his first two tries, this time forcefully pushing his palm onto the pick-axe and trying to push the mana in rather than let it diffuse in by itself.

The sun beat down on Kell where he sat, now that he had finished focussing on the pickaxe he could feel the rays on him, near burning a hole through him they felt so hot. When had it gotten so hot? The heat was almost like a solid object surrounding him, his every movement generating beads of sweat as his body fought against the heat.
It took him several moments to gather the motivation to get up, and when he did even more to actually walk over to the beginnings of the mining he'd done. Beginnings couldn't even realyl describe it, he'd dug a small hole and gotten a single piece of iron from it, if he wanted to get somewhere he would need a lot more than a single piece of iron, he'd need quite a lot of it just to get the mines and woodcutters going again.
Sweat ran off him in rivulets as he lifted the pick-axe once again over his head, letting gravity assist him as he brought it down onto the rock in front of him, watching the rock dust fly up and about and the smaller chunks fly. The quicker he got this done the sooner he could go back and get himself a drink, he desperately needed to get inside and wait out the heat, yet his morals wouldn't allow him to leave the job unfinished. Finding a rhythm to work to he began again, lifting the pick-axe then dropping it into the rock at a slow steady pace.

Kell ran his forearm across his forehead, his arm coming away drenched as if it were raining instead of the brutal sunlight he was currently experiencing. The pick near fell from his hands they were so drenched in sweat, he looked as if he'd just been dunked in a lake despite there being no such water source about.
His labours this time had been slightly more fruitful, another piece of iron and some sandstone to go along with it. Not at all ideal, but better than nothing. If he eked out what he had well enough and Kevin didn't waste too much of his material again they could probably get by with what was here and what they had stored at the warehouse, it'd be quite a close call but he was fairly sure that it could in fact be done.
Kell sifted through the rubble, removing the usable chunks and piling them seperately, he'd done enough mining for them to get by now he was fairly sure. The sun was beating down remorselessly on him and if he worked much longer he was likely to get heatstroke, it was not in any way an appealing thought, for now he needed to just get his gains back with him and then get inside for a drink. After a few attempts however it was clear he wouldn't be able to take it all in one trip, so instead he split it into two. It made more sense to him, and he couldn't afford to not bring it all back, the warehouse could hold it he was sure.
So thinking he picked up the iron first and began his walk to the warehouse, they were heavy but it was manageable, the thought of a drink of water awaiting him kept him moving.

Opening the door carelessly Kell stumbled into Kevin's home, panting from exertion and near collapsing from lack of water, all the greeting he could offer to the blacksmith sat fixing his tools was a slight nod of his head before he seemingly attempted to drown himself in a bucket of water. "Long trip? Seems like a pretty hot day, I can't imagine that helped you out." Kevin chuckled at Kell's misfortune, grabbing the pick-axe from where Kell had dropped it on his way in and leaning it up against the bench he'd been sitting at.
"An axe now right? That was what you wanted? I'll do it before you start badgering me." At this Kell pulled his face out of the water for long enough to give thanks, although by this point Kevin was already out of the door and to the warehouse where the goods were stored. He was quickly back however, holding their entire store of iron, all six pieces of it that was....they really needed to sort themselves out.
Having drunk the receptacle dry Kell stood up, wobbling and having to hold onto the bench before he regained his balance. A quick check of his belt showed all his belongings still present and accounted for, always handy to have not lost anything while he was out, the items on his person weren't particularly valuable, but could be useful in a pinch. Kevin meanwhile had stoked the fires and selected tongs, already placing the first of the ingots into the flame. "An axe first, then we'll need a hammer. And while we're at it some tools that'd help us get our agriculture up and running wouldn't go amiss." With this the half Drokagr took his position at the bellows again, beginning to pump them at Kevin's command.
Once the metal was hot Kevin transferred it to the anvil and began hammering away, flattening out one edge to serve as the cutting edge of the axe.

It was unfortunate, but the axe head just didn't come out like they wanted, it looked more like a bird's beak than an axe head and neither of the two had any idea how it'd gone quite so wrong.
The next two attempts went much the same, in the first the metal turned out to be of such bad quality that testing it on an old stump caused the whole thing to shatter. The second time it just didn't mould, there were to many flaws and not enough willpower in either to fix them.
Luckily the fourth attempt produced a working axe head. Kevin mounted it on a rough wooden handle, leaning it up against the wall next to the pick axe and readying himself to work on the hammer they needed. If they had any hope of getting the mills and mines and all the rest going again they needed a hammer, they couldn't exactly bang every nail into place with random logs and their own hands could they.

It wasn't entirely unexpected at this point when the hammer came out useless. A flaw in the metal caused it to be useless as anything other than a decorative item really, they didn't exactly have any use for decorative items.
The two were nearly there, they could almost taste the end, once they were done with these essential items there wouldn't be as much trouble, they could most likely rest easy for a while. So thinking they hastened to get the hammer done.

They were done to their last ingot now, they had one chance only to make the farming tools, until Kell could go out and dig up some more iron, or the mines were operating well enough to do it for them, this last ingot was all they had. Both of them knew this, their success rates up until this point hadn't been quite so good as either had been hoping before hand, Kevin was far more disappointedby this than Kell, he'd gotten far to rusty.
"Farming tools? That's all that's left from what you've said, it'd be nice to have a farm going around here again, get some proper food grown here so we don't have to import it." It was said simply to break the silence, they'd worked hard on the past two sets of tools and other than the occasional gruff command from Kevin the work had passed in silence, both concentrating too hard on what needed to be done.
It wasn't necessary for them to ace this last one, they didn't have to travel all the way to Kable for iron now they could mine it themselves, it was just hassle still for them to do so that obviously they wanted to avoid, the sun was still out in force and even inside they could feel that it was far hotter than usual today.
The iron went into the fire, Kell pumped the bellows in a steady rhythm while Kevin watched the iron begin to glow, splitting it on the anvil into smaller bits and beginning to work on the farming implements one by one.

"Well, we're out of iron now, i'll have to go and get some more at some point. For now though I think we've done enough work today. I'm going to go to the manor and sleep, i'll see you tomorrow?" Gathering up all the newly forged tools Kell fastened them onto his belt. " Course, i'll only be either here or in the warehouse. If you're going to get some wood and get some of the buildings started come find me I don't mind helping out with that, it'll be good to have some lumber coming through and maybe some crops around here again, it's been a while.
With a brief nod of his head he clasped arms with Kevin, relinquishing him and heading out the door towards the manor house that he was going to be living in. It was old and dark, but not in a bade state of repair, nothing that couldn't be fixed too easily. It was safe for him to live in for now, if not terribly comfortable, but that could be sorted in time as well, for now there were much bigger priorities.
It wasn't a long walk and he quickly found himself at the doors, unlocking them with the key he'd been provided and stepping inside. Nothing had changed since they'd taken shelter in here, not that he'd expected anything to change. A pile of blankets on a pallet served as the only decent bed and it was the one he was going to use.
As he took all of his tools out as well as his blade and lay them next to his bed, he felt for a moment the spark of mana in the pick-axe as he touched it, remembering the enchantment he'd put on it before. That would also work for the axe surely? It was worth a try, if it would help him tomorrow he'd probably not regret losing an hour or so's sleep to make it so.
Kell placed all of his tools down but the axe, holding that in his hand and running a finger down the sharp edge, drawing a miniscule bit of blood, it was sharp already, but if he could make things more efficient with magic why shouldn't he. It was only now he realised his earlier usage of it was pure stupidity, it was outlawed within Cruinthe, and even without taking that into account most folk had a healthy fear of it. For now he gauged the best plan was to keep this particular skill to himself, it was always useful to have a few tricks up your sleeve of course.
But his mind had wandered, he brought himself back to the task and gathered the mana in his hand, imbuing it and attempting to force it into the axe, he tried in a similar way to how he had earlier with the pick-axe.

The enchantment unfortunately didn't stick, he didn't really understand why, it was made of the same material as the pick-axe was. Then again the pick-axe had also provided him with some trouble to begin with, it had taken several tries to make the enchantment stick, iron was a fairy low tier metal after all.
Once again he condensed the mana into his palm and imbued it with the properties he desired before attempting to push it into the axe head, he assumed that was the correct part as it was what did the actual work. Rolling to enchant axe
Simple (30) Knowledge (10) Artificing I (5) Thaumaturgy I (5) Industry I (5) Threshold: 55
It was unfortunate, but the mana fizzled out of the axe head. He'd read that iron had quite a low conductivity to mana but he hadn't thought it'd be quite that bad. He knew he wasn't particularly adept with his skills, in fact he couldn't even really be considered a novice. At no point had he received any teaching or training other than what he'd provided for himself, but still, something as basic as this surely shouldn't cause him so much trouble.
He was starting to lose his patience slightly, each attempt at this drained him of a little more of the small amount of energy he did have left, if he wasn't careful he'd end up passing out, something that was never a good idea when holding an axe. He'd give it one more try then sleep either way, if he failed he could do it again in the morning when he was well rested.
Kell this time waited several more seconds to allow more mana than before to gather, this approach had worked the first itme and he was counting on it doing so again. Once the larger mana flow had been released he shaped it and once again tried to force it into the axe head.

The axe head glowed briefly before settling back to it's original hue. No sparks flying no rebound, and when he placed his hand on the head he could feel the mana inside it. It seemed that he hadn't been using enough mana each time, for when he'd tried to increase the amount both times the enchant had stuck. He filed this bit of information away in his brain before placing down the axe by the rest of his tools and climbing into the pallet that served as his bed.·····

Kell woke slowly, stretching out his limbs and cracking open an eye, looking around himself and seeing the manor house properly in the light. The fact he was sleeping in what would have really only been considered an entrance hall were the manor functional didn't bother him overly, he'd gotten a good enough nights sleep and none of the other rooms were much better equipped for him to sleep in currently. He knew at some point he'd have to get this place properly cleaned up and renovated, but his own lack of personal comfort didn't bother him, he'd slept in worse conditions while travelling and things were clean enough and dry so what was the problem.
It took him moments to slot his tools into holders around his body, leaving only the farming tools behind because currently he had no real need for them. They were just useful to have in case he needed them, for now they were near useless, they'd need a mill and some fields, seed and workers before the farming tools could be put to use, that was a little down the line. Once everything was securely fastened into place he took up his shortsword and fastened it on, it wasn't a great weapon but it was the first he'd ever owned and in fact the only thing he had that he could really use to defend himself should the need arise.
Breakfast consisted mainly of the leftovers from food he'd brought with him from Kevin's, it was quickly polished off, he'd need all the strength he had for the day to come and the wood chopping that needed doing. He had pitiful amounts of earthen gains but he could get by on it, wood was the next item he'd need. So thinking he stepped out of the manor house and into the forest, making a path straight to Kevin's, he'd pop in on the old grouch and then get on with his woodcutting.

Carefully opening the door into the workshop Kell very quickly spotted Kevin, sitting hunched over a workbench, tapping at a metal ingot with a miniscule hammer. Upon hearing Kell enter Kevin looked up at the Drokagr, "Do you know what this is?" He motioned towards the oddly coloured ingot on the table. Kell had no idea what it was, he'd never seen anything like it before and had no idea where the smith had gotten it from. "Hydrillium, one of the toughest metals there are, one of the villagers found it when they were digging for some coal near the old mines and brought it to me." Kell's expression was puzzled, what was so special about it, so it was a metal a bit stronger than the iron they usually had to use. "Not just one or two times stronger, more than ten. You make a sword out of this stuff and it'll keep it's edge for longer than a human lifespan. You make armour from it and you're near invincible" Kell's eyebrows rose, such a strong material, it'd be good if they could use it for something, it was debatable whether armour or weaponry would be better. "Unfortunately, I don't have the materials nor the knowledge to work it, for now it's just an ingot, it'll take time before I can handle this, never had access to such a rare material." It was understandable really, Kevin had been here all his life, simple folk had no need for a material like Hydrillium so he'd had no need to work it before.
"But you didn't come here for this, what do you want?" Kevin challenged, one hand rested on the hydrillium ingot as if it were too precious to be let out of arms reach, which to be fair to the smith it probably was. "I'm just going to go chop some wood, we'll need it for the buildings to go up, and no harm in having a little extra around incase." They were going to have need of material in the future as well and if he could get more than they needed now, then later he wouldn't have to, there's no time like the present after all. Kevin grunted at this, woodwork not being his favourite thing in the world, he was competent at it but didn't hold a love for it like he did the working of metals. "Just be careful, we don't know where that crow came from and we don't need to lose you just as you start to put some work in around here." That was about as close as he came to showing concern for anyone, he couldn't simply just wish him good luck or anything then he'd have to admit he cared.
Kell grabbed some food from the by now familiar cupboards before heading out, looking for a spot a bit further off from the warehouses and Kevin's home before he started chopping into the trees.

It was only about a half hour's walk before he felt he was far enough away from Kevin's house and the warehouse that he wouldn't disturb him too much, he also was happier out here because then he wouldn't be ruining the near pristine environment around the blacksmith's hut, he wouldn't be leaving it surrounded by a bald patch or accidentally crash a tree through the roof.
The downside of course to going further away from Kevin's hut was that it meant Kell had further to carry the wood back, after carrying the iron back from cable and the sandstone and iron he carried on his mining trip he knew this was going to be a pain. He would manage it of course, because he had to, but it'd be hard work and kill his arms near enough, what he needed was some sort of bag to hold it all in, although that wouldn't really do the job either. What he really needed was a cart of some sort, either one he could pull by hand or he'd buy some sort of animal to pull it, but being able to dump his gains into a cart would mean he could carry more at once and transport it around a lot easier than carrying by hand.
Kell slipped the axe out of it's fastenings, testing the edge against his thumb and finding it sharp enough. Once again woodcutting wasn't something he'd done before, he knew the basic theory of it as that wasn't too difficult, he also remembered reading once about how to chop the wood without tearing the bark. Whether or not that was necessary was beyond him, he didn't know if keeping the bark on the wood would help or hinder anything, but he figured that if he kept the bark on it and it was unnecessary it'd be a lot easier to take it off than to try and replace bark on wood it'd already been taken off of.
Planting himself solidly in front of a tree Kell began chopping a thin layer into the side of the tree closest to him in a horizontal line, severing the bark but not going much further into the actual tree itself. When this was complete he moved to the other side and began chopping in earnest, chopping a wedge out of the wood, the axe swinging in the same rhythm he'd used while mining, that seeming to work for him.
