Allyria was about to answer him when the disease decided it was time to try to kill her again. She did her best to get it back under control before speaking to him. She cleared her throat and spat out the gunk and blood that was clogging her up.
"To answer your question there's a different culture and language and all the things that go with that. I don't expect you to pick up the language. Just be respectful. Don't stare at anyone too long. You're not physically allowed on the level above the marketplace, the council are like kings, and anything you do can impact me. So don't go committing any crimes. You can ask questions as we go along. Curious foreigners are fine, just don't be rude."
That was about all she could say about the subject. No wait, no it wasn't.
"Don't get roped into the luxuries the city has to offer. There are a lot of things that can be very attractive. Don't let anyone try to sell you anything, and don't go anywhere with anyone who isn't me. If I leave you somewhere you stay in that spot, I won't leave you anywhere unsafe."

"Hmm. I'll try to keep all of that in mind. I do not plan on buying anything or going off with strangers. I may have led a sheltered childhood, but even I am aware of how reckless that would be." Jorkahn was ready to enter the city. The closer it became the more excited he got. It surprised him, he had only recently developed a want to visit Telle'Korasus. The Half-breed wasn't certain when it developed. Maybe it was when he met the Kalimbra? Or perhaps Allyria herself had sparked that interest? The origins weren't terribly important, but their mission was.

"Do you think the disease has reached this place?" The way Allyria talked about the city made it apparent that foreigners were allowed in and out. He wasn't entirely certain what kinds of trade came in and out of Korasus, if any at all. The plague spread through trade routes, didn't it? The champion thought to himself. He tried to remember the little he knew about trade from his father. He found himself wishing he was more studious in other things more and more every day.

"I'm not sure. I hope not. I hope we don't bring it with us. I also hope we find a cure here. Let's keep moving."
Allyria brushed herself off and tried to clean herself up to look presentable to the gate guards before continuing on. This hacklung business was going to ruin all of her clothes. She was going to be furious if she'd have to replace something silk or something really expensive because she coughed blood all over it. Or if someone else did. So far Jorkahn had been courteous enough to cough only on himself. She was wary to keep it that way. She was not a fan of getting soaked in someone else's blood. Not even enemies.
She didn't have much else to say to him unless he had a comment. Otherwise she'd continue on in silence towards the city and would do her best to get them inside with minimal invasive searches.

Jorkahn nodded and continued onward. He noticed Allyria brushing herself off and thought to do the same. The journey had been very rough on him, he likely looked and smelled worse for wear. As the city came closer he straightened his clothes and his armor, making certain his ears and face were well hidden. Allyria had told him elves weren't really welcome in Korasus. He wasn't sure if he could lie about his race. Hopefully, if they were caught, he could explain he wasn't hostile. Having met some from the initiative he, perhaps wrongly, assumed they were more on the generous side.
Perhaps they would just need to explain their reason for being here. It was a noble one, after all.

After a while they had come close enough to the entrance to the city to be spotted by the guard. Allyria continued to march towards the city gates without stopping. She couldn't really hear if the soldiers there were saying anything but she knew they had been spotted, or rather assumed that.
"Assume we've been spotted, Jorkahn. They've the high ground after all. And we're approaching from an unconventional direction. Most people use roads, believe it or not."
Allyria laughed at her own joke. Relieved the Hacklung didn't take her there, she waved in a friendly manner at the personnel manning the gate and shouted at them.
-"Ash'Nadar! It has been a long way and I am very tired! Please let us in, I haven't bathed in a week and I very much miss civilization!"-
The half-breed sorceress continued to laugh after she said all that to them. She liked messing with the gate guards. Having totally forgot that they were trying to be more or less discrete because of Jorkahn's lack of being the right race to enter the city without hundreds of questions and uncomfortable searches.

The young half-breed nodded as he listened his smile broadening at his companion's joke. "Bah. Only peasants use roads! We are a more sophisticated sort!" Jorkahn made sure the sarcasm was easy to hear in his voice, laughing in turn with his own joke. They sure didn't look sophisticated. They looked like they had been traveling for weeks without a bath and very little rest.
When they reached the gates Allyria waved at them and spoke to them in what he assumed to be Drokagr. He had heard it often enough at this point to recognize it when spoken. Unfortunately, he only knew maybe three or four words. Jorkahn nodded in greeting to the guards but kept his mouth shut. His face was still hidden by his cloak and helmet. He knew Drokagr society trusted males less than females. A few months ago he could have easily passed as the opposite sex and, while his features were still mostly ambiguous, he had filled out and become a bit more muscular lately. The Champion of Jewels kept pace with Allyria and would only stop if she did or they were otherwise ordered to.

The guards would of course stop them at the gate. There were about fifteen of them milling about. Each of them heavily armed and armored. All of them had at least a Cresfa Saber on them. Many had Arrek'nai tridents. They were all armored with Kindan Plate, Kanma Helms, and Arsa greaves and gauntlets. Aside from varying builds and hair lengths, they all appeared the same. The closest one held a hand out to indicate that the party was to stop. She spoke, a voice that enjoyed smoking far too much.
-"Stop, state your name and business. And show us your face. While you're at it, break out anything you're bringing into the city. Animals, fruits or vegetables, anything like that."-
The other guards continued to watch the horizon of the plain. Some of them couldn't hide their interest in the two travelers though. This gate was an irregular place for people to show up at. Especially in these times of disease and fear.

Allyria did not expect to be stopped. She figured the questions were harmless enough though. So long as no one looked at Jorkahn too closely, and she said the right things then they could get into the city with ease. She wouldn't even have to lie. The first thing was to lower her mask. She of course had already made herself appear as herself before. So this was a triviality. She flashed a smile at the guard.
-"Allyria Allenmorde. This here is Jorkahn, a servant. He doesn't speak our language. Nice as far as men go though. We don't have any vegetables or fruit or animals, unless you count the male among that category. I have research I need to do at the library, and stop in on my family in Ne'Turak Balika if I have time."-
The sorceress made a gesture to Jorkahn to keep his mouth shut. If the guard got too curious they could wind up in a cell. That would be uncomfortable for her, potentially deadly for him.

Jorkahn stopped when his 'master' did, unaware that he had been given the title of servant for the moment. He watched the exchange between Allyria and the guards. If his face were visible it would have a subtle look of confusion on it. He did not understand the language being spoken as was mentioned before. The half-breed observed as the Countess doffed her mask and smiled at the guards. After she was done speaking she gestured for him to be quiet, which he obliged.
The Champion of Jewels stood up straight and simply watched both parties attentively.

Or, at least he would have if the sickly bastard wasn't so susceptible to hacklung. Jorkahn brought his hand to his mouth and began coughing. One or two got out before he could attempt to suppress the disease.

Unfortunately, the lad was unsuccessful. His coughs racked his body and blood dripped from his gauntleted hand. The Ritgr attempted to remain standing so as not to draw more attention, but it was likely too late for that anyway.·

The guards became immediately suspicious of Jorkahn's coughing. The blood dribbling out from his mouth over his gauntlet as he tried to quell the coughs racking his body. They eyed each other and then assumed combat stances, raising their weapons and planting themselves in their positions. They didn't exactly disbelieve Miss Allenmorde, but they failed to mention that the male was sick. The one that had been talking before spoke up again. None of the others felt like talking out of turn. They were all waiting for a cue.
-"This male is sick. Does he have that hacklung that is spreading through the human kingdom?"-
The warriors were waiting for the answer to this question. There was a pall that filled the air. One of the warriors moved forward, out of nerves. She half lunged but caught herself before she did anything.

Fuck
We've been made....
Allyria looked at Jorkahn, then back at the guard.
-"He might. I can't be certain. That's why I have research to do. This is charity work here. I'll take precautions so that he doesn't spread it around. I'm trying to develop a cure for this so the disease doesn't kill thirty percent or more of the population of everything. He's really not that bad either, look. He's still standing."-
Allyria hoped that was convincing enough. She smiled again, trying to turn up her awkward charm as much as possible. All the way to eleven.

Well, they definitely noticed. Jorkahn took a small half-step back when the guards levelled their weapons at him. One of them seemed a bit more cavalier than the others. If the half-breed didn't know any better she intended to attack him for a moment there. The warrior turned his head away from the guards, one hand up in a sign of peace. The other was still attempting to stifle his coughs, of course.

And now the woman was coughing too. But the male had recovered quickly. The guards were wary as the woman was already recovering. It didnt seem like that terrible disease that was ravaging the populations of the major cities of Cruinthe. They all looked to their leader. She chewed on her lip. She could potentially be letting in a disease bomb into the city by allowing these two into the city. Thousands could die.
"I am sorry. It isn't worth the risk to the city. Thousands could die. I can't let either of you in. Not until your synptoms pass and you show no sign of disease. Please move a mile from the city, due west and do not deviate."

That backfired completely. She had made a tempting argument, but Hacklung was determined to kill everyone in Cruinthe and not be cured. She had recovered quickly, but it seemed the guard had made up her mind. Allyria looked at each guard in turn, they stood with their leader. There was no talking her way out of this. She thought about it for a minute and nodded solemnly.
-"I guess I can't blame you for wanting to protect the city. Can I at least convince you to let me access the books I need to develop a cure? I'll camp a mile west of here. If you deem that acceptable please bring me any and all volumes on diseases and combating them."-
It was the best she could do. Hopefully the guard would be convinced by the effort. She turned to Jorkahn and patted him on the shoulder. Then spoke, switching to Cruic.
"Come Jorkahn. They're not letting us in. We're in a sorry state. I hope you brought stuff we can camp with."

He couldn't understand what was being said, but the body language of all involved gave him a pretty good idea. Allyria turned and patted him on the shoulder before speaking. He nodded to her before turning towards the guards and giving a polite bow. The warrior would follow her to the west until they were far enough away. Jorkahn immediately got to work.
"What do we do from here?" He said without looking at her.
It didn't take long for the half-breed to find a flat area. He found he had become quite proficient at eyeballing a nice place from a distance and setting up a suitable camp rather quickly. Now to see if all that inner bragging was warranted.
Setting up camp. Easy? (15) K (45) Camping II (10)=70 dlw19S_q Failure! SUccess! This was actually the hacklung roll. So resisted. Hacklung 10: Resist. Apparently in the edit things got messed up, this is the camping roll. Success!
It took a little longer than Jorkahn wanted, but the camp was set up in a reasonable amount of time. The tent was set up and the sleeping bags were placed. A campfire was made and enough wood was gathered to last them a few days with a moderate fire. They could also see any potential threats coming from quite a distance away.··
