Since leaving Redgar's tower he'd stayed within the province, he'd not received fully what he came here for and so he wasn't going to be leaving yet, he'd found a likely spot on the plains around a half hour's walk from the hole he'd exited the city by and planted himself on the floor with the bundle of leathers next to him. His chosen spot was good enough, far enough away that he shouldn't be troubled by those within the city and yet close enough that he could easily go back for more supplies and to visit the Duke once again to resume the lessons when enough time had passed that he thought it appropriate. Staying in the city likely would have been more convenient if they'd had an inn, but even had they one he wouldn't have felt safe in a city full of other races that could cause trouble with him.
Kreans took a small bone needle from inside of the makeshift belt he'd carried with him on his journey as well as some gut thread also hidden in one of the many pockets, threading the two as quickly as he could before laying out the stack of leathers he'd bought at the market. While they weren't the greatest materials he'd ever encountered they would do for now, he could hunt for some leathers to tan himself once he had a way to carry them back with him to camp, something that he could make with these goods he supposed.

Or maybe he could not, he'd stitched the seams to far apart and the back had several glaring holes in it that made it unuseable once he'd finished. Kreans took the useless remains in his hand and returned to the market, he'd use them for a blanket maybe considering he couldn't for a bag.

Once he'd returned to roughly the same spot that he'd been in before Kreans would sit down once again, this time he'd measure out the bag properly in order to ensure that he'd not make any of the same mistakes again and end up with gaps all across his bag that would make it unusable. The Skaldi still carried his first attempt in hand, he wouldn't waste the leather despite it not working as he'd intended, instead he would simply use it as a sleeping mat or the like, something that would make his life somewhat easier even if not in the way that he'd initially intended.
Before beginning his work this time he would set out to gather a bundle of sticks together, ranging from as small as his claws could manage up to those as thick as his arm. It was likely he'd have to spend several nights out here so he'd need a fire, at the very least he would need one tonight in order to keep away other animals and should he get lucky in his hunting cook whatever he could find. Once he'd gathered up as much kindling and moss as he could he would shovel the earth out of a small portion of the ground with his claws to clear the grass and other debris away before arranging them around what little dry grass and foliage he could find. After that, he would take a small flint and steel from his belt and strike them against each other to produce a small flame which he would feed with more kindling and work to build up as he had done many times before.

The flames would grow and he'd continue to feed them from the pile of wood he'd made next to himself until it was large enough to provide comfort to it's scaled occupant. From there he'd top it up from time to time and gather more fuel until he had a sufficient amount to keep it going through the night should he desire.
Once the fire had been taken care of Kreans would address the second bundle of leathers that he'd bought, he'd sized up each piece and gone through in his head multiple times how he was going to do this to ensure he wouldn't make the same mistake as last time. When finally he put bone needle to leather it was with confidence and surety that he stitched the pieces together, he'd made a pack before, it'd been a while since he'd worked leather but it would come back to him he was sure with the amount of time he'd spent learning the art.

With the final stitchings done Kreans held his work up in the light of the fire and examined it looking for any holes at the seams as he'd seen in his last piece. As soon as he was satisfied he began to apply some light force to test it's strength, placing the ruined leathers and some sticks into it also to ensure that it wouldn't break once weight was applied, he was satisfied that it was as he had wanted it to be.·

Kreans had made one last visit to the market before the sky had begun to darken, grabbing himself some more leather to replace the belt that he'd been wearing up until now, it was a fine piece of his work but it was time that he got something better for himself, he needed a belt that could hold more than the one he'd been using. With his new bag he had bought almost double the amount of leather this time, carrying half in his bag and half in hand, seeing as how the shops were likely to be closed now he thought it wise to stock up so that he had something to do during the night before he slept, that and the urge to do something with his hands was strong since he'd spent so long teaching the Duke High Cruic and before that not much else.
It had been a long time since he'd made anything himself, the armour and spear being his last made objects before he'd left New Skaldira and those only intended for his journey to protect himself with, now that he'd begun once again he wanted to feel the leather and work iron at a forge, he had no forge but there was leather and still things that needed making.
When he got back to his makeshift campsite the fire had burned low, with some blowing and the addition of more wood he soon had it back up to a size, he'd not been worried about it going out of control while he was away as he'd already cleared around it by digging it down and it hadn't been big enough to send up many embers that had a chance of catching in the grass nearby. Now that he was back however he allowed it to be somewhat bigger so that he was warmer again as the evening began to creep in, the idea of a cold camp wasn't something he was happy with if he could avoid it, already he had no tent nor sleeping roll so at least the luxury of a fire sounded good to him.
Dragging the leathers closer to him he'd take one and use it to measure around his waist, marking the size with soot on the piece and then arranging the other leathers to all fit that mark. From there it was simple enough to thread his bone needle and begin piecing the leathers together into a usable belt with several pouches on it, his many hours of training with leather were worth it as it seemed almost as though the material came together by itself.

Kreans was more than happy with the results, he'd made himself a serviceable belt as well as a bag for himself, and he'd gotten a sleeping mat out of it also from the ruins of his first attempt. It was a good feeling once again to be able to work with the materials of nature to create more, the only way it would have been better is if he'd been able to hunt the creatures himself to gain the materials, although he was sure he would come to that once again when he had the time. It fit snugly once he fastened it around his waist, the pouches hanging at an easy to reach distance and he had no trouble opening or closing them without looking, there truly was nothing so good as making clothes for yourself to your own specifications.
Darkness was beginning to creep in and he found himself with little to do, idleness was not in his nature but he had nothing more he wanted to make, the leathers were packed into his bag and he sat around the fire feeding it wood just often enough to keep it going. It was then he remembered his lessons on alchemy and herbalism, herbs were rife out in the wilds like these where few knew enough about them to want to harvest them, it was an area that he was very unfamiliar with but one that could command great power should he gain some mastery of it in the future as all working crafts would.
So thinking Kreans stood, and began to search the plains, never leaving the sight of his fire but looking around the ground and the foliage dotted around for one of the herbs he would have heard about before, most of the class he'd not paid attention to that much so he couldn't remember the herbs effects only their appearances.

Kreans sat with his bounty in a pile next to him, it looked quite unimpressive really when he put it all out as he had. In its entirety, it was a collection of leaves, straw and reeds that he had found amongst the grass that as far as he was aware wouldn't really give him much to do for the foreseeable future. The way the Skaldi saw it he may as well have picked weeds out of the grass and brought them back to his makeshift camp around the fire, what he had now had no real use on its own.
If he was remembering correctly, and there was no guarantee that he was, the things he had gathered were only really able to be used as a base for a potion and couldn't actually be utilised by themselves for something. It took him a few moments to dig his notes out from one of the various pockets on his old belt, they'd been made during his study at Innorsford and contained more than he remembered by himself of his lessons. Still, he would check up on his notes and take one of each sample to crush and grind up, leach into the water, and attempt to at least check that they did as he expected.

Kreans finished his preliminary investigations on the three materials, he'd found his previously made notes amongst the other papers in his belt and read them through slowly, taking his time to try and recall the meaning of some of the larger words that were required for him to properly figure it out. As he did so he continued to grind up, mash, cut and leech out the three ingredients that he'd found so far and attempt to figure out their properties through more practical means than reading from his notes. Herbalism wasn't something that came naturally to him despite the fact that he had lived outdoors for almost the entirety of life and so you'd think that he would know about plants, but all that had been taught to him as a hatchling were those he could eat, those he couldn't and those that were useful.
In the end it turned out that these three werent as usefu as he'd been hoping, the leaves were good as a herbal base for adding other ingredients to in order to make something better and the reeds and straw were good for paper. Right now he had no need for paper so he stored the reeds and straw away, the leaves were somewhat more useful but he had nothing to add to them so currently they weren't all that useful, they were stored away also in his pack. Maybe he could use them later, but for now they were ingredients that he had no need for nor a proper way to use so he'd keep them and either use them or possibly sell them later.

The night passed blissfully uneventful, although the Skaldi had not fought in a long time and was somewhat itching for combat, it was against another warrior not against some random beast in the night that would try to ambush him. He'd rather work on what he wanted to while he waited what he hoped was an acceptable amount of time for the Duke to get better, he had no idea how long it would take a human to recover from how serious the Duke's illness seemed to be effecting him but he assumed that three days would be ample time for the man to be in a state where they could continue. So he would stay out here, camping out for three days, hunting for his own food and sleeping around his makeshift camp while he waited, with not much to occupy himself other than using his bone knife to carve small pieces of wood into various shapes.
When the time he had allotted had passed Kreans rolled up his makeshift mat, strapping his leather armour on and spear to his back before hefting up his pack and heading back into the city. Hopefully by now the human Duke had recovered enough for them to continue their lessons without him dying, whether or not the human seemed better he would still continue the lessons, he'd been here far to long now to not complete the job and gain the full amount of money owed

- After Returning Tutor -
Kreans sat and sharpened the small bone knife he'd had as long as he could remember, the first weapon he had ever held in his claw and the tool with which most of his work was done outside of his crafting. It was a very well used tool and as such was showing the wear from useage in any number of tasks for many years, it was time to make another but he had no bone with which to make his new Prey Knife with. Prey was somewhat different to what he was used to, instead of the salamanders or wolves he was used to here it was rabbits and deer for the most part, they couldn't be that much harder than catching salamanders or wolves could they, at the very least they wouldn't fight back anywhere near as viciously as either.
Taking out a flint and steel from his pack the Skaldi would pile up wood in the firepit he had been using as a makeshift camp while he'd stayed around the outskirts of Morith. Before heading into the town to teach the Duke he'd extinguished it but now that he was back it was likely he'd want it back, so Kreans would pile wood up the best that he could until it was a sizeable enough fire that it wouldn't go out for some time unattended.

It took a few tries but eventually the sparks took hold and with some careful blowing the embers grew steadily into a healthy flame, flickering as a sole beacon amongst the plains, despite the plague raging within the city it seems few of the half breeds and humans had thought to leave the city to less crowded and disease ridden areas. It was a wonder any of them were still alive within the city, the Duke himself had coughed himself near to death in their lessons and he was likely far better attended than most of it's populace.··

Three pieces of leather came into his hands quickly enough, a bone needle and thread quickly following them from their respective pockets at his belt. Each leather piece was laid out first of all, he'd need to seperate each into strips and sew them together to make the toughest line that he could possibly make for his snare rope. It maybe wasn't the strongest snare line that had ever been made but he was fairly sure that it would do the job so long as he set it up properly and luck was with him, it would work for his purpose and that was all that was really necessary.
Once he'd measured it all out properly and lined up each piece only then would he begin cutting each piece of leather into strips and tying or sewing each piece together to form a rough sort of snare line to help him hunt the smaller and less dangerous prey of this area far easier. All of them were far nimbler than he and he had no bow nor any weapons he could throw to try and get them so the snare would have to do, anything larger like a deer would still be caught in this trap, although it was unlikely anything like a salamander or wolf would remain caught for long.

All seemed perfectly fine, right up until he pulled the finish rope to test the stitching, it broke with only half of his Saurian strength and tore apart into several larger strips. It was beyond repair, there was no point to it now and the materials were wasted, a frustration as he had not many to begin with.·

The failed attempt at making himself a hunting trap ended up very quickly in the fire, the several broken segments of what he'd tried to sew together scattered amongst the flames and quickly disintegrating, the scraps of torn leather that he would have been able to retrieve from it were pretty much unuseable and he wasn't going to carry this failed project around when realistically it had no value nor anything else that he could do with it. His last failure he still carried with him, but then he could use this one as a roll mat still, this one couldn't be used as anything more than a rag and he had enough of them already on him so it didn't matter that he was simply burning these ones.
He had not enough leathers left to try again, he'd just have to attempt his hunting without the extra assistance, it would certainly be harder than it would have been had his stitching been up to standard but it wasn't impossible by any stretch of the imagination. Kreans drew his primitive spear from his back and traipsed away from his camp somewhat to begin searching for any sort of traces that woudl indicate prey to him, he wasn't a master hunter by any stretch of the imagination but he was somewhat proficient at least seeing as how long he'd been forced to it for food.

What is it?
It took him some time but he finally found some tracks, he couldn't be to sure but they appeared to be from a deer, it was far faster than him and seemed to be travelling quite quickly, it had probably already caught his scent and was escaping the large scaled creature that was trying to hunt it.

Hunting in this sort of landscape was far different to that in the swamps that he'd been raised in, there were many different factors to be aware of and Kreans was quite inexperienced in it in that this was really his first time trying to hunt any of the prey one would found within a proper province of the continent. He'd seen a dear, or rather he was quite sure that he'd at one point seen a flash of it as it ran away from him at speed greater than he could manage, but the tracks as far as he could tell had been from a deer, just he'd had no chance of catching it with only the spear that he owned and the great speed that it was capable of moving.
Still he was not discouraged enough that he was going to quit here, he was a proud Shadowscale and he was not giving up on the hunt just because the first piece of prey that he had found had escaped from him. Meat was a necessity, as was bone for his works, the leather that animals could provide would also come in quite useful, the furs he could probably sell to another trader if he liked, there was no reason for him to use it when Kreans had stronger materials at hand.
Once he'd returned to his fire and given it enough fuel to last longer he headed out again, spear out happy to throw it even should the need arise in order to pin his prey.

Still nothing proper, once again he was sure he'd caught track of a deer. If he was unlucky enough it might even have been the same as the last, although he was quite sure that should a deer have escaped then it wouldn't have come back towards the giant lizard that had been tracking it across the plains and woods. It was likely to have been a different one, he was surprised that they were so abundant so close to the city, maybe it was due to the fact that there weren't many hunters of any skill out currently. If his own efforts were anything to judge by, as a Skaldi who'd spend most of his live hunting for food, the deer were not easy to catch and with the majority of the city afflicted with disease it was unlikely that many were out hunting for deer or even doing anything from what he had seen.
Still he'd have to continue on, he needed meat to eat and the bones and leathers that prey would provide for him to continue his work with. He'd not many resources left and had no desire to spend all of the money he'd gained from the Duke on leathers, bones and iron for his crafts when there was ample prey around if he could but catch it.

Now a boar, prey was certainly plentiful here, the gouge marks it made on anything that it passed was quite obvious as were it's quite distinctive prints in the ground. Kreans had not at all expected to be finding boar here, they were a prey somewhat more dangerous than the simple deer and rabbits that he'd expected but they gave him little pause considering the salamanders and wolves that him and his people would usually have to hunt. While it maybe wasn't quite as quick as the deer that he'd previously been tracking it was still quite quick, faster still than the bulky Skaldi and so able to escape it even if it did only move a small bit faster than he did. Slowly and surely it pulled ahead, and after a time he realised there was no chance for him to catch it with how he was currently, it was unfortunate but he knew at least that there certainly was prey to be had, if he could figure out a way to get it.
A great sigh would be let out from the Skaldi's throat, it sounded more like a growl but it was the frustration leaving his body at the lack of success he'd had so far hunting the flatland prey. Even with the fact that it was a new place he'd still thought it would be easier than this, surely hunting couldn't be an entirely different act purely because the terrain had changed to something different than what he was used to before.
