Once again he found tracks for a boar, though he had heard or seen a flash from one passing him but never a concrete view, as if a herd of them lay just out of his vision determined to remain hidden from him. How he was finding so many tracks and seeing so many small notes of the animals existance and yet being unable to catch even a single one of them was completely beyond him, it was almost as though nature was against him in this one. Survival of the strongest was something he was familiar with and had lived by most of his life and so these animals could live against lesser opponents, but he was definitely far stronger than them so long as they actually stood still and fought him instead of escaping him each and every time he tried to turn them into his prey.
Still he wasn't giving up, he'd not spent so long on it yet that he had given in to despair and called it off for favour of his small fire and some rest. Kreans still had energy in abundance and he'd carry on until he couldn't anymore, if he were to quit now it would definitely only be because of his own weakness and that was something that he simply couldn't allow to happen, he was not weak in any way and he couldn't act as though he were. Once again he would take up his spear and begin looking for tracks, if he did find anything he'd attempt to stay downwind of it so that it hopefully wouldn't smell him coming, he'd make as little sound as possible but a large Skaldi moving about wasn't the quietest thing so he would have to make do.

It was almost as though nature was conspiring against him, he couldn't recall such a time in his life when he had taken so long and worked so hard yet found only traces of prey and had nothing to show for the time that he had spent hunting. If he had been like this back in the tribe when sent out to hunt it was likely he would have been laughed at by the other Skaldi for such a lack of results. If he'd worked for so long and failed to bring anything back it was quite likely he would lose strength in other's eyes, and while he had battle strength in the plenty it was important to keep appearances also outside of fighting that he was a capable Skaldi.
It was as though all of the wildlife in the area had formed some sort of group to tease him and yet not allow him beyond that, he caught glimpses of prey and there were tracks in abundance but never had he actually managed to catch anything nor even catch full sight of something that he was chasing. It was clear that prey was plentiful and yet somehow it was highly elusive at the same time, the very fact that he was hunting outside of the swamps that were his usual grounds couldn't be affecting his skill that much surely. Anger surged within him at his lack of results with the time that he had put in, and it became the fuel for his body as he began with great vigour once again attempting to find something to vent his rage on.

Finally, with rage lending quickness and ferocity that he'd failed to utilise before he fell upon the prey like a force of nature, as he was truly intended to be, all of his failures were channelled into this single success and the throw was clean. Kreans' spear flew through the air as though it were guided by the spirits themselves, launched from amongst the trees where he had been hiding downwind of the rabbits and lodging firmly into one of them. A savage grin lit up the SKaldi's face as he approached his prey, drawing the prey knife from his belt and kneeling down to withdraw the spear before wrapping his powerful claws around the heavily injured rabbits head and giving it a quick jerk that snapped it's neck. From there he set to it with the prey knife, carving down his prey with precise yet powerful strikes and shearing off all of the meat that he could get from it, there wasn't that much considering the size of the rabbit but it would be enough to sustain him for a short while as well as providing him with some materials to use once he'd sorted them out properly.
It took no time at all for the Skaldi to completely butcher up the rabbit and take all of use, with only the inedible organs remaining which he buried in a hole in the ground before moving back to his camp with his gains in tow. Once at his makeshift camp he would refuel the fire before even beginning to think of how he'd cook the meat, the leather, fur and bones were already stored away on his person but the meat he'd need to do something with sooner or later, it was wrapped in a series of large leaves for now but wouldn't keep forever. If he was to actually try and make something approaching decent food he'd need more than this however, which would require some more hunting to be done, and while he hunted the meat would remain wrapped in his bag.

Thoughts of how best to cook a deer had very quickly crept into Kreans' mind, stepping in with the ideas of a deer to bolster his supplies, that would certainly provide him enough rations to last a while should he dry the meat properly to preserve it while he traveled, it would definitely be better rations than simply this one rabbit that he had found would be. Rabbit alone would only sustain him for so long, he had some of the hard traveling jerky and stale bread he had carried this far but would very much prefer to be able to supplement those rations with something more fresh and with more of a taste to it. Unfortunatley it seemed that once again the animals were becoming quite elusive, the deer had used it's long legs to good advantage and began to flee at a great pace as soon as it had noticed the Saurian that was tracking it to make himself a fine dinner.
Now however he was bouyed by his recent victory over the animals, he wasn't going to be dissuaded so easily now that he knew he still had the ability to hunt for food as he needed, it might take a little longer in this new environment but he was still capable of making it happen. If only he could make it happen a bit quicker that would certainly help, but so long as he came out of it with more prey than just the one rabbit he'd count it a success.

When a boar came leaping out the underbrush the Skaldi was barely prepared, he'd known the beast was there but had no idea that it was going to come at him in a way so disimilar to the other boars he'd seen signs of so far. Maybe it was his proximity triggering it's fight or flight reaction but either way Kreans wasn't prepared for it to come charging out tusks lowered towards the Skaldi attempting to gore him on them. It was but a moment before his instincts kicked in, his spear lowering and braced against him in a way such that the boar almost ran dead onto it and impaled itself. He held tight as it kicked and groaned, seeking to work it's way off of the spear, watching as it's movements slowed and blood pumped out of it in a crimson waterfall, waiting for it to fully die at his spear but still wary should it make a last effort in it's death throes.
It seemed to not have the strength left however and soon succumbed to death, it's movements stopping and what's left of it's blood leaving the corpse at barely a trickle, Kreans removed the spear from it with a mighty tug and drew his prey knife to begin the work of butchering it, removing sides of steaming meat one at a time until six sat before him. From there he began removing the bones, leathers and furs of the creature, he would use as much as he was able to of his kill so as not to waste it's corpse. If you were to kill sometihng it was only right that you used up the entirety of it's body, or as much as you possibly could, to do any less was to show a lack of respect for what nature had provided for you.
After several trips he had it all back at his makeshift camp with him and it was time to begin turning the bounty of raw materials that he had in front of him into the things he needed. Out of the nine sheets of leather he now possessed the first three he began to lay and measure out for his hunting trap, it would help him in times like this in the future, as much as he had succeeded in the end it had been frustrating for a while.

Kreans looked at the furs he'd gathered, between the boar and the rabbit there was quite a lot of it, and while he was not a particularly well versed tailor using it couldn't be that different to working with leathers could it. Kreans took the various pieces of furs he'd taken off of the two animals and piled them together, he'd never actually worked with furs before and they seemed a great deal lighter and easier to break than the leathers that he normally sewed, still he was fairly sure that he could make something that was at least usable out of them, even if it wouldn't rival the greatest of pieces made on the continent.
A cloak seemed to be the reasonable choice to him, something to keep him warm and provide some protection in the colder weathers as well as being able to act as a blanket when he slept out should he desire, it would work for multiple purposes with the least of troubles and most good travellers had one from what he'd seen. Even if they were just humans or half breeds that mainly wore them there was no denying the many uses they could be put to should one desire, so for him it seemed the most logical choice for him to make. Out again came the thread and the bone needles and Kreans got to work turning the furs into something more useful.

Unfortunately it seemed that furs were not the same as leathers when it came to working with them, as he began to sew they were tearing each time at the seams and fraying along the edges, the more delicate material showing the signs of the Skaldi's strength far faster than tougher leather would. By the time all of the pieces were sewn together they were all falling apart and so were consigned to the fire.

Furs clearly weren't as simple as he'd thought. Kreans put aside his needles and threads for the moment and instead picked up some of the larger sticks he'd gathered up before for the fire. Instead of burning them on the fire he had other plans, stripping the skin from them in large rolls before planting them firmly into the ground with his Saurian strength. He'd done some work for today, more than a little really considering he now had some new materials and some meat for his travel rations, he'd likely have to go hunt again come morning but for today at least he was done, visibility was beginning to fail and so he'd finish off this last bit of work and then likely sleep, he'd earned some sleep with the work he'd done so far.
Kreans took the cuts of meat he'd taken off of the corpse of the boar as well as the far smaller one he'd taken from the rabbit and began slicing them down until all of them were roughly a consistent size that would make cooking them far easier. From there he would thread them onto the sticks he'd buried into the ground and ensure they were on there securely a good distance from the fire for them to cook slowly. His spear stayed in his hand as he began to cook the meats, there was no telling what the smell of cooking meats could bring especially out in the wilderness as he was, so he was prepared should something think to chance making his meal it's own.

It seemed as though cooking certainly wasn't an area that he excelled at either, of the seven chunks of meat to go around the fire only two came in in any sort of edible state. The remaining five were burnt to cinder in the fire once he'd removed them from their sticks, they were not useable anymore and he wouldn't want even the wild animals to be eating meat so badly burnt once he'd moved on so fire disposal it was. The two pieces that had come out of the fire cooked well enough he chopped up further and wrapped them up in his bag, they would act as his rations for now, it was a shame that so little of what he'd gathered was useable but he didn't have the capability here to dry the meat as he normally would so cooking it had been the only real option he'd had for preserving it. Each of the sticks that had held the meat was also fed to the fire and he spent half an hour as night fell simply bulking it up to last through as he slept, there was no issue of predators this close to the city as far as he had seen and he was a light sleeper anyway so it should be fine.
Kreans took out the failed leathers he'd repurposed as a mat of sorts and laid on them near to the fire, it was a shame he didn't have a cloak to use as a blanket but he could manage without one as he always had. From there he'd allow himself to drift off to sleep and rest so that he could continue his work the next day.

As the sun rose so did the Skaldi, he rose early as there was plenty to be done that day, it took little time for him to stoke the nearly dead fire back into life and add fuel to it, heading out shortly after to replenish his stocks of wood as he'd been burning through it at quite a pace now that he'd been here for a few days. It wasn't difficult to find that much dry wood and he had a sizeable stock by his fire once again after only an hour or so of searching and gathering it.
Once the wood situation was well under control Kreans set out once again to hunt, chewing on some of his older rations as part of a moving breakfast to allow him to get as much as possible done in as little time as he could. Travel rations were the most unsatisfying food that could be found but Kreans was loathe to break into his newer and fresher rations just yet, after the results of his hunting he'd see if there was enough that he could do so.
It didn't take long before he had his new hunting trap set up, the Skaldi himself hiding nearby to it and waiting for something to hopefully wander in, he'd baited it with some berries he'd found around the area as he hoped the animals would like that far more than they would the meat that was the only other food that he could possibly have used.

Time passed and Kreans grew impatient, the prey was not taking the bait that he provided and he'd caught nothing more than air and leaves so far, luckily enough for the Skaldi however the grasses and leaves camoflagued his trap somewhat, hopefully that would make it harder for the creatures to escape him as they had been doing so far. If they couldn't see the trap after all then how could they avoid it, by the time that they'd been caught up in it there was very little chance they'd be agile enough to remove themselves. Incase they did managed Kreans was nearby with spear ready, should they escape his trap then he would be there ready to thrust at them, he could think of no easy way that they could avoid both trap and spear.
His method of approaching the task had changed quite significantly from the more active hunting now that he had the trap, he no longer was actively tracking prey and catching it rather waiting for them to provide the opportune moment and then springing on them. If this new passive way of hunting his prey didn't work then he would have to return to his old way, it had worked quite well for him when all was said and done but it took far more energy to carry out that if this trap worked he would be able to put into other areas.

Kreans tore into the carcass once again with his prey knife, soaked to his elbows in the blood of the board that had trapped it's leg in the trap and been swiftly impaled by his spear. It was a display of savagery and yet each piece of fur, leather or bone came out in relatively good condition, the result of years of practise. You couldn't learn to hunt without learning how to properly remove the desired materials from a carcass, if you didn't do it properly you risked wasting parts of the beast, and wasting material was something that no one in their right mind would think of doing.
Once all had been salvaged Kreans would pile all up again around his fire, the furs, leathers and bone seperated from each other while he attempted to spit the meat once again, he'd had some success with it last time but now that he had more to work with there was no reason for him to not try and preserve as much of it as he could. He had meat for a shorter journey but with where he planned to go next it was likely he would need much more, he intended to travel for nearly an entire month so would need provisions for as much of that journey as he could. If necessary he could stop to hunt along the way but that would add more time to his trip, the more he could gather before he set out the better.

An aroma of burnt meat threaded it's way through the camp, it turned out he really wasn't a great chef, only one of the pieces of meat survived his attempt at cooking them up for his rations, a pitiful result considering how he needed the rations and before heading out of New Skaldira considered himself at least an able cook. Failures were fed to the fire and the one success to the large Saurian, he'd eaten nothing so far today and the exertion was beginning to catch up on him, the meat was followed down by a swig from his waterskin that was quickly replaced at his side after being used, much longer out here and he'd need to refill that also.
With his needs now sated Kreans took up the furs, his idea of a nice cloak for himself still lingered at the edge of his mind, it would be a useful garment to have and now he once again had the resources to make an attempt at one. Furs were lined up and needle with thread were removed from their pouch, he'd make another attempt at making himself a good cloak to keep him warm and give himself something proper to sleep with.

As soon as it was completed Kreans wrapped the cloak around himself, the slight breeze was completely nullified as if there wasn't one at all, there were no gaps through which the air could sneak and it seemed sturdy enough after a bit of force was applied to see if it would fall apart at the seams. Now that he'd sorted out a proper travelling cloak for himself it came to something he'd been meaning to replace for a while, Kreans drew his current prey knife and examined the chipped and worn blade, it had served well but it was time for him to make a new one that would serve him for longer.
Kreans took from his pile of newly harvested bone and that from the leather that he'd taken from the boar also, it was quite a simple construction really just a bone sharpened till it became sharp as a knife with some leather wrapped around it to serve as a handle. It would be something that would get a lot of use however and so needed to be completely solid. Once he'd gathered the materials and laid them out on a piece of leather in front of him he'd draw his current prey knife as well as his spear and some sharper rocks he'd found, from there he'd start filing away at the bone to sharpen it for use.

Now came the time for something he'd thought about but never tried, it had long been a thought in his head that if you could train the lesser creatures that roamed the woods and plains then you could have a veritable army of subservient animals that could fight with you, hunt with you and perform however else you wanted to so long as you trained them correnctly. He'd dabbled somewaht in the idea before but never had any real success, the animals had quickly left or he'd ended up having to kill them for food so he couldn't get the results.
Now however he could make himself something that would hopefully help, animals respected the law of nature in that those stronger controlled those weaker, power was all to animals and he would bend them to his will with his own power. It was simple enough to turn some of the leather into longer strips and wind them together in order to make himself a whip. A whip would suit him perfectly, would work without causing the animal a huge amount of damage that he'd have to let heal but would get his point across clear enough with the pain it induced. Kreans began stitching the leathers together carefully.

Kreans turned to the fire and stoked it up once again, throwing branches onto it until it was blazing and he could feel the heat against his scales, he took off the newly made cloak and basked in the warmth for a few minutes, soaking up as much of the heat as his form possibly could and enjoying every moment of it. Fire was life for most, it kept them warm cooked their food and warded off the dangers of the night, the first two he wholeheartedly endorsed but the third caused him no worry. If anything with the amount of time he'd spent in peace he was itvhing for a fight, something to get his blood pumping and give some action, to revel in the satisfaction of proving his strength over other lesser beings.
He'd have liked to outfit himself better, his spear wasn't the best of craftsmanship and the single piece of armour that he wore could barely stop his on claws should he make a strong attempt, it was laughable to him really but he had none of the iron he would usually want to use to make himself a better weapon. Iron was expensive and his coin was saved for other things, he cold get by with bone and leather well enough for now. A sharper weapon would make his hunting far easier, maybe he should consider making himself a bow now that he'd learnt how to use one from the Alliance, it would be a good experiment but with his aim it was unlikely that he would hit any of the fast moving prey in this area.
For now all he had to use was the bones and leather, so he'd make himself something stronger than the basic leathers he currently wore anyway. Kreans used the leather by cutting it into strips to hold all of the bone together and form it properly, he'd secure everything as well as he could to prevent gaps in his armour.
