After everyone had been settled into their respective lodgings and the workshop back at A & F Ventures in Morith, Allyria accompanied Tyr to Skaraptica. Her vision from before had still made her wary, and she opted to wear her armor under her robes, as well as Scarlet's visage stuffed in her travel bag for the trip. Her anxiety about the vision however did not stop her from wanting to go on this little errand. She also needed to gather some materials from the forest for the trip. Such as things to make paper. She wanted to be able to document whatever she found out there in the western part of the country. The region so forbidden.
It was only a few miles walk to the forest, but she brought her horse and weapons along as well. She felt safer. What with what she saw. It was hard for her to tell if it was the future, the past, or the present, but it was very close to when she was in the tavern for the meeting.
The day was also getting on. The skies would probably darken before she even realized it. And the forest wasn't particularly safe at night. So aside from politely exchanging various pleasantries through the short trip to the wood, Allyria hadn't spoken much to Tyr yet.
As she would arrive at the edge of the forest, she had thought that she could acquire the materials she needed closer to the city. Her anxiety almost won.
I don't think anyone's a match for one of those crows by themselves. Not even the Duke.

Following up on the short ride was Tyr. He'd almost forgotten his horse was in town, which is to say he did forget but would never admit that, and lucky him because it made the trip so much easier. Good thing too, if he was going to build this cart out by the forest edge then someone was going to have to drag the thing back to the city. With how far out they had to go just to reach Skarapctica that prospect was an especially daunting one. Hurrah for horse power!
It was a fairly quiet ride as far as accompanied rides went, Allyria didn't seem to want to talk about much. Fine by the Duke, his mind was brimming with various ideas for the proper application of horsepower. Pulling a mill stone for instance, or something along a dedicated track, or dragging heavy nets through water. Oooh, you could even get a series of gears and make a tooth brush move automati--Nooo, no. Maybe not that one. Best not put the power of a horse behind a small, possibly pointed object.
Dismounting the horse relatively gracefully. Easy (15) + Agi (30) = DC45 1CqsJTim Success at unlearned riding!
At the edge of the forest Tyr halted, slid off the back of his horse with unpracticed ease, and tied the lead rope around a solid tree trunk. Nodding at his success, the Duke pulled a felling axe from a tool pack tied to the horse and nearly went straight for a tree. Tyr caught himself after a moment and turned to see if the Lady Allenmorde might need some help. He sincerely doubted it, she seemed like a fairly capable woman, but hey it was always nice to be helpful.
"Can I be of assistance at all? Or shall we get right down to the cart work?"

Oh right... I need to get off the horse.
Allyria tried to gracefully get down off the horse, much like Tyr did. In fact she was trying to copy him.
Dismount! -Agility 30, Easy 15 = 45 B1pwIXVm 33
And somehow she pulled it off. Not nearly as well as he did, but well enough that she didn't look stupid doing it. She felt good about herself then. Her horse pittered and pattered in place. Tyr had said something about getting down to business. She looked at his axe, and realized he meant to cut down a tree or something. That made sense, that was where they were going to get the wood from. That's part of the reason they were out here in the first place.
"I have no idea how to cut down a tree. I can assist in the building part though. What you said kind of made me think we were assembling it out here. I brought tools for that. As well as some things to keep me occupied while you did the tree cutting thing."
Yea... smooth. Maybe he thought you were there to, I don't know Allyria, make sure the tree doesn't fall on him?

Tyr gave a laugh and his near-signature smile. "Anyone can cut a tree down! It's cutting it down properly that matters." It was for reasons like this that Tyr carried spare tools. Grabbing another one from his cart, the Duke handed it off to Allyria and returned to the trees. "Come, I will show you!"
The boisterous fellow immediately started swinging away at the tree. Bark cracked and chips started flying, without Tyr slowing down in the least. "Hitting a tree is easy, but you want to hit it just right." It would seem mindless at first, but the wedge formed after only a dozen swings. Said wedge was flat on bottom, and angled down from the top. "You make this wedge shape here to guide the tree down. Wherever it faces the tree lands." With several hard chops the wedge rapidly grew in size and the trunk started to shake. The chops stopped and Tyr listened a moment.
"Once you've got a nice chunk chopped out you want to make sure the tree is holding. This is just a guide, you don't want to bring the tree down on yourself after all." With no cracks sounding out Tyr walked to the other side and just went to town on the thing. "Now we bring it down!" The LumberDuke grinned like a maniac and hacked away, bringing the tree down in short order. He shouted to be heard over the splintering wood"WATCH OUT BELOW!"

Duke Tyr Mardok was a very... passionate man about chopping wood. Allyria was almost swept entirely up into the moment as he hacked away at the tree, explaining as he went. She understood the concept and everything, it just didn't interest her as much as it seemed to interest him. Maybe that was one of the core differences between the two of them. When everything was done with and he had felled the three, some large pieces of usable wood was left over. That part she was interested in.
"Looks like you managed to yield some results through that. Do you think this is enough to build the cart?"
Then she noticed the crow in the nearby tree. It fluttered down and landed on a branch. She watched it for a moment and shivered. Crows out and about made her nervous after the vision she had. She wished she had improved upon her equipment before they left for the woods. That seemed to have been a mistake.
Rushing headlong into things again... being underprepared will kill me one day.

There was a laugh. "This little bit? Oh no. We can make some decent headway with everything this tree has to provide, but we will probably need at least one more. Maybe two. Besides, this still has to be chopped apart." The tree had made a small trench in the ground on impact that would help keep it in place as Tyr worked. A few feet up on the tree from where it had been felled Tyr started chopping away to separate it into chunks. Allyria would easily be able to work with that, hopefully. If not, she could at least get started and he could help once all the wood was gathered.
"Have no worries, I shall provide a nice bundle of wood to work with." That might leave Allyria bored though. Hrm, that wasn't good. Best to keep everyone engaged, they were happier that way. "Would you mind carving the wheels while I chop the rest?" Once they returned to the workshop they could band the wheels in iron for better durability, but for now plain wood would do.
Passing the time with activity alone was fine, but this was a perfect opportunity for socialization as well. He knew a paltry sum about the lady and her company, which meant it was question time! "So my lady, I've seen you contract a group and here you are helping build a cart. Might I presume the A in A&F is Allenmorde? Is there anything else you do for your Venture group?"

His laugh underscored her thought that she knew nothing about this kind of work. How big of a cart was he planning on making anyway? Large? Small? Monstrous. A whole tree seemed like a lot of wood to her, apparently it wasn't. At that moment she wanted to begin gathering the materials she had come here for. Sure, she volunteered her assistance for the cart project, but it didn't seem like there was much she could do at the moment. Carve out the wheels? That would require equipment she didn't have, a single piece of wood would need to be bent into a circle, and for that they'd need a steam box and several hours. Unless it was carved out of a solid piece. Carving it out of a solid piece would be wasteful.
"Actually the "A" stood for Allyria, but Allenmorde works too. I really more or less do anything the business requires me to do. The wheel sounds wasteful to me. We need a steam box to bend the wood into a circle, which we can rig up back at the shop. Unless you mean to carve wheels from solid pieces? We could slash some of the same tree into circular slices, but the tree would have to be a perfect one. Otherwise the wheels will be out of alignment and we'll go nowhere, what with their varied sizes."
Allyria thought through their problem. If a perfect tree could be found, that would do, and she'd slash the wheels out like he tried to task her to do. So long as the process seemed wasteful to her though she'd refuse to do it. Resources were scarce as it was. Instead, she went about collecting what she could from the field next to forest for a few minutes. Attempting to achieve part of what she set out to do here.

As the first three turned into several logs Tyr sorted through the wood and discarded the unusable bits, those full of knots or giving off a rather...unnerving feeling. With that done the shaper moved to a second decently sized tree and started chopping away. Two might work quite well for this honestly, they only needed it big enough to hold sacks of supplies and some tents. Yes that sounded good. Plus it was less work and really unless you did this for a living chopping three trees down, and then apart, was incredibly tiring. Two would suffice and the Duke would be ok with that.
"Well that's certainly one way! We don't need fancy spoked wheels for this cart though, solid wheels will do. They'll handle the weight better and we can replace them easily if one breaks! It's easy to size them to each other: stack them up for shape, stand them end to end for width. Trim down as needed." This wasn't going to be the prettiest cart but it would definitely do its job. "All we'll need after this is a few good crates and bags for everything to sit in while we travel."

Oh, quite the haul Allyria! This is a good spot.
She praised herself for the eclectic grouping of herbs and plants she had gathered in the field nearby. When she returned to where Tyr was he had felled and gathered more wood. He was also discussing the merits of the various wheel types to be considered. Spoked or solid. She had figured there wasn't much difference, but apparently that was not the case. Solid was apparently more suited for their needs. That is if they were carting a lot of material.
"I only planned on packing provisions and equipment. Not a lot of heavy stuff. Do we have enough wood to begin, I can grab my tools if you.... fucking birds. What are those? So noisy, is that normal?"
Allyria was now sufficiently distracted by the two asshole crows in the tree cawing back and forth at one another. She remembered her vision, and was very much not going to mimick either of them, lest the big one in the cloak shows up.
"Hey... are crows a frequent visitor in your folklore?"

The current pile of wood would be enough. They weren't doing a massive transporting operation, it was just an overland trek. Tyr was swapping his axe for a rudimentary saw when the second bird started cawing with the first one. He readily ignored it at first until Allyria brought it back to his attention. At first it seemed fine, birds do what birds do. Then the little buggers went nuts and wouldn't shut up.
"Noisy yes, that noisy no." Crows talked a lot to each other, and groups of them could be loud. Just two of them? That was odd.

"They probably show up in our legends somewhere, but other than that I'm not sure. Crows alone are no threat. Pay them no mind, we'll build this cart and head back." Odd as it might be Tyr wasn't overly concerned by the presence of the two birds. They showed up at Mallon every now and again, did weird things, and went about their way. Smart birds crows, but weird. Saw in hand Tyr started getting planks out of logs. Time to do this thing.

As the pair were finishing up the cart, three hooded figures began to approach them from the woods. They were of at least man height, and fully cloaked in black. The crows in the trees started to squawk even more, and more crows joined them. The creatures hoods did not fully obscure their nature however. Out of the sleeves of their cloaks were large black talons, and out from the hood itself was a long black beak, ending in a point.
More squawking.
Still, there were trees between them and the pair.

Allyria had done what she could with the cart. Which wasn't a lot, but it was enough of a help that Tyr managed to succeed. Though she believed he could have done it himself just as easily. She was good with the hardware though. Once the resources were rendered into their usable forms she easily hammered and screwed and otherwise forced planks and cogs and such together. Slipping some into their various slots and pounding away with a hammer for other pieces. She had brought along a variety of hardware as well, not sure of what his ultimate design would be. The end product was a very nice cart with a decent load of cargo space. They'd easily be able to put several bags and crates on it to store even more supplies for their trip.
When she looked up she noticed three hooded figures, the same as from her vision, were in the forest. Except there were three of them. They were just beyond the trees. And the crows, there were even more crows in the trees.
"Uhm... Tyr... There's a couple of hooded monsters over there. You ever see those before?"
Allyria slipped on her scarlet's visage, no use hiding the truth now, and armed herself with her scythe. As she laid eyes on the creatures again, she scanned the middle-most one, looking for weaknesses.
