After ensuring that the man was safely not in the vacinity I came back down the stairs quickly. "What are you doing?" I ask softly. I didn't know, and was curious why my wife was pulling a lever that had me struggling. I didn't hear anything, either. I should trust what she's doing. I thought. I shake my head and stand beside her.
"Let me help." I offer, and put a hand to help pull the lever.

The pump started up, but a limited amount of water was passing through it. The troughs on the sides of the room were only about a quarter through. Words flashed up on the error panel in red lettering. It was apparent something was still wrong with it.

I watch the water come in and note the red words. They just... appeared. "Does that mean it's working?" I ask Astris. I walk to begin inspecting the water. The flow seems like it could be stronger. Maybe there is a blockage. "Do you think that there might actually be something blocking the waterway?" I ask.

Almost had it. She stifled her annoyance with the lever and watched the pump start up, the water flowing along the troughs. It should function more, shouldn't it?
Astris furrows her brow. "It's drained me. It could need more to function, but I need to rest first...it could be blocked.." She goes over to read the new message on the error panel.
Mana 0 Read the thing! Threshold - Literacy I (+5), High Cruic I (+5), Kn 10, Simple (+30) = 50 EWdnfjiC
She rubbed her eyes, watching the words swim before her. I'm more tired than I thought. She attempted to read it again.

Shaking her head seemed to do her some good. Being drained by that thing is no laughing matter.·

The error panel was only showing a few words in the red lettering.
"Intake blocked. Flow reduced 78%"
That was all it read. The flow had apparently been blocked at the intake for the system. That was miles away. The system was starved of water. To fully fix it, they'd have to clear the blockage.

"Intake blocked, Flow reduced seventy eight percent." She says. "At least there's -some- water coming through, that might tide people over until it can be cleared." She looks at Ikram. "Where do you think the intake is? I mean...it'd have to be a large source of water..that way. It can't be nearby."
She looks back and forth along the mechanisms. "Do you think Countess Allyria would be in a position to help us?" she settles her gaze on Ikram, questioningly.

"Wait, it actually is blocked?" I ask, incredulous. I thought I was bluffing. And stupid. I felt suddenly better about myself in that moment.
"If she's still in town." I shrug. "But that old man might know. If he doesn't, someone in the town is bound to." I pick up the lantern and gesture up the stairs. "I think we've done all we can here. After you?" I offer.

Astris nods and heads up the stairs slowly. Heavens but she was tired. "Yes we're done here. Although someone should inform the populace to ration the water use until the blockage is cleared."
She walks ahead of Ikram up the stairs in the rabid heat again. Lovely. I've got to get some staying power or I'll be useless when it comes to the expedition.

"Why bother?" I ask. "They'll fight over it anyway. The sooner they know about it, the quicker it will start. Unless, maybe we inform the guard?" I shrug. Maybe if it's given more time to fill, things will be better. Either way, this much water should be enough to stave off further death. If we hurry, we can get this done and over with all the quicker. If only we had horses. I think. Maybe we should purchase horses. Or steal them. Stealing likely wouldn't go over well.
"I think we need to buy horses." I say. It's been an expenditure we've been avoiding like a ravine. Our funds are already slim. "Maybe just one?" I ask.

Astris nods. "We'd better I believe. Ikram we cannot leave immediately. I need to recover and you will need to purchase a horse or two if we can manage it. The blockage will need to be moved and I am useless without having rested. Perhaps if time is pressing I could rest on the way?" She seems dubious of this particular option as she emerges from the pump station.
"Either way, we will need horses. Will you see to it?" She looks at Ikram somewhat in the bright sun.

I look at Astris with concern. The fatigue is evident. She must be very thirsty. And likely hungry. "Why don't you get something to eat and drink for us on our journey? I'll see to the horses." I touch her shoulder. "And you can rest on the way. Don't worry." I offer a smile that I hope is reassuring. "I'll go now, and I'll be back here when I've finished." I nod my head.

Astris nodded, looking relieved. Oh good. That's at least one negotiation I can be absent for. She headed off in the direction of the city proper, looking for some reprieve from the sun and something to take for the road. Travelling was not on her plan for today.

Funny name for a horse I thought for the hundredth time during the journey. The horse rode smooth. It was broad, and a fine creature. The name just seemed to keep catching in my mind. I shook my head to rid myself of the bother. Fortunately the ride seemed much shorter than the walk. The heat seemed to be climbing as the morning dragged on.
I led my horse near to the watermain, and waited. Hopefully, I thought Astris met no trouble on the journey. I couldn't help but worry, remembering the attack more than a week ago. It still weighed heavily on my mind.

Astris had just about had it with everything. Her arms are full of foodstuffs, this armor is hot and she's sticky just about everywhere. She did her best to hurry back to the watermain to meet her husband, however her mood was not improved with seeing him sitting on a horse like a dandy. It was an irritable thought and unfair. At least he got one. Gods know how much that set us back. Perhaps we can recover some monetary losses at the Castle.
She walks up to him and the horse, although a bit warily of the horse itself. "Ikram, they've posted a job notice about the watermain at the Castle. I know where it is, we should visit there first before we go. And help me with these." She holds up the carefully balanced bundle she has. "This is for you." She gestures with the bowl.

I reach down and take the bowl. "Thank you." I say, offering her a smile. She still looks exhausted. "No, no point to it. We'll tell them what's happened when it's finished. Climb on?" I ask, holding out my other hand.
"You can rest on the way there. It won't take long, though."
The horse seems to be of fair temper. It's a heavy looking roan grade of some odd heritage. It's got speckling towards its rear, one left sock on the front and a stocking towards the back. Maybe a paint somewhere in the mix? It stands idle in the heat.
