Three thousand? That wasn't that bad at all. She wrote the number down when she heard it. Giving Vekkia the wrong number would throw off all of the math that was involved, and it was a hell of a lot of math. Not a thing that Allyria was going to do. She listened to the woman make her case. A & F Ventures would own the land if they failed to make the payments. That of course was enticing. However she wasn't so black hearted as to make it impossible for them to pay her.
"Alright. I'll accept the amount of three thousand ritz. Let me have someone run the numbers for what the interest and terms would be."
Allyria got up from her chair with the papers she had brought in. She flashed a smile and passed through the door into the backroom. Vekkia had appeared to be deep in the weeds of one of the stacks of standard proposals and such that Allyria had written up. Sweat was still beading on her body. Allyria had to do something about this backroom. A window, a backdoor, something.
-"Vekkia. Three thousand is what the customer is asking for. They're putting up their land for collateral. A nice section of land. But they don't actually own it at the moment. So the principal, that's the term right? That'd go towards paying off the man's father and any left over would be used for development."-
-"Hm. That's pretty much a guaranteed gain. Let me work this over for a minute."-
-"Sure."-
Vekkia took the paper and scratched out some terms. A percentage, a period of time. The paper was covered in the drokagr slashes and such that made up their mathematics system. The final amounts were at the bottom. She passed it to Allyria, who took it back into the room where the customers were waiting.
"I have your numbers here. Three thousand, at three percent weekly, which is not bad. The Bank of Sorath doesn't go that low since recent economic collapse due to the high taxes a few months ago. You'll want at least a year to pay it back. Average county income is somewhere between fifty and five hundred but since you'll be just getting started we placed you around seventy five. Your monthly payment would be two hundred fifty four ritz and nine zink. Which means development will have to take off very quickly for you. Would you like more time to pay off the loan, or is a year acceptable? I have several models here."
A year, likely, would not be fine if their only income was that which the county earned. Especially if they were relying on the regular taxes the people paid. If they had another source of income, like Allyria's proposal, it would be much easier to pay off.

Astris furrows her brow. A year at three percent? That was...generous. Ridiculously so. She'd expected somewhere around six percent or more. With what they really expected to do, this would be more than enough time to repay the loan, with the interest being low enough they could cover it easily if all went well.
"That's a generous offer, Countess. We will of course, accept, pending review of the contract itself." To be fair, she's not quite sure why the interest rate is so low, unless she intends to use this contract as a springboard for her aforementioned proposal. It's possible. She stifles the urge to yawn. Between the heat and apparently simply negotiating, she's starting to feel a bit drained.

I simply had no idea what was going on, nor how generous an offer it was. I choke back the urge to ask how much we'll be paying back, but apparently we will have a year to do so. Hopefully, this can be managed. All of the percentages and specific language was completely over my head. I felt like I was being lectured at by one of my father's stewards, or smirked at by Maosim for not understanding something he'd been trying to teach me. I wouldn't show any sign of misunderstanding here, however. I would just wait.
That would surely be the best course of action.

"Marvelous."Allyria grabbed one of the spare sheets of paper and put it next to the one with the calculations on it, and began writing up the contract. She took her time with the paperwork.
High Cruic I, Literacy I, Knowledge 35, Easy +15, threshold: 60

And it came out beautifully. The penmanship was excellent and clear. There was not a single error on the document. The numbers transferred perfectly, and she had even managed to use flowing calligraphy. She was impressed with herself. She had expected needing to start over at least once. When she was finished she read it over, blew on it to help the ink dry, and pushed it towards the customers so they could look it over. A & F Ventures hereby grants the below signed individuals named Borrower the amount of 3000.00R at 3% weekly interest for one year for the purposes of purchasing land and starting operations thereon.
Duties of the Lender: -1.Provide the aforementioned 3000.00R.
Duties of the Borrower: -1. Purchase aforementioned property before the first payment is due. -2. Make a monthly payment of 254.09R on the first of each month for twelve months starting the first of Hueltrios 200ATD to A&F Ventures.
If the Lender fails to uphold their duty the Borrower may file suit for the 3000.00R plus the total value after one year at 3% weekly.
If the Borrower fails to uphold their duty, the Lender will seize complete and total ownership of the property the 3000.00R was used to purchase up to the full value of the loan. If the property is not purchased than A&F Ventures may sue for the entire value of the of the loan including interest.
Lender: Countess Allyria Allenmorde -A&F Ventures
Borrowers: ____________________________
____________________________While they were looking over that, Allyria began to state what her proposal was for the man that had the propensity for combat and adventure. She sat up straight in her chair, her eyes glancing back and forth at the both of them. He had appeared bored through the discussion regarding what the payments would be and such. Allyria hoped he'd pay attention to what she was saying now. "As for my proposal. I would like to offer you a position as an expedition member for the company's next foray into unearthing the history and mysteries of this land. One of the company's primary functions is treasure hunting, you see. We outfit adventurers to prepare for any would be complications, and procure valuable artifacts, tomes, and other things from the various ancient, ruined, or otherwise formerly inaccessible areas of the country. For example we brought back some very interesting items from one of our earlier expeditions. Namely this amulet I'm wearing. If you're interested, I will let you know when the next expedition is and where to meet."

I look up to meet the Drokagr's eyes. That... sounded like a real job, for a moment. I'd spent weeks looking for something real and continuous that I didn't have to hide my name while performing. I couldn't be a guard, because they would look into my actual history. Not only that, but the woman was offering to actually provide equipment for these ventures. That was too good to pass up.
"What sort of pay would I be looking at? If it only relies on the price of the haul, I'm not sure I can risk myself and my wife's security for a gamble. What kind of assurances could be offered?" I ask. I felt these were fine and reasonable questions. Fortunately it seemed like their company was not to meet in the immediate future, judging by the way she couched her words.
"And when could I expect to be called upon?" I add as an afterthought.

Astris reviews the contract as the Countess states her proposal, glancing up at her and then at Ikram as she mentions procuring ancient items and ruin delving. There's the part she's really interested in. She wonders just how interested Ikram is, considering he was just recently run through.
During a quiet moment, she simply looks at Ikram and says "Two hundred, fifty five ritz, roughly, every month for a year. It's a good deal." She signs her name, then hands it over to Ikram for review and signing. She hoped that would help him cover his difficulty reading.

"We're looking into starting off our expedition members with a monthly stipend of forty ritz. Enough for food, lodging, and travel expenses. Some of the places we go are quite distant from our homes. A&F will supply any equipment needs. There's also a cut of whatever the expedition gains."
Vekkia was against the stipend of course. They couldn't justify it with the way they were spending. But of course Allyria would hear none of that. You have to pay soldiers to fight. You have to pay people to make stuff for you. You have to pay people to crawling through very small holes and traipsing through trap laden ruins, then haul back whatever dangerous magical artifacts they find through the very same holes and trap filled passageways. It was just the right thing to do.
She swore her friend could squeeze a gold coin out of a plant. Allyria would save that poor plant.
"I'm glad you think the loan is a good deal."
Allyria waited patiently for the loan to be passed back to her.

Forty ritz was an immense amount. In three months, it would double what I've managed to put together in the last two on top of my life's savings—for doing little more than being at ready. I couldn't argue with that. Still, the woman hadn't answered my other question.
"Yes, but when and how often do you think I might be called upon to this duty?" I had hoped it would be an easy question. Surely she might know the answer. It seemed as though she had sent more than one expedition out. Another problem was that in truth, I couldn't agree to this without asking my wife first. This decision affected her as much if not more than it would me. I'll bring that up after I know how frequently I would be called.

Astris looks back and forth between the two, then looks at Ikram, somewhat annoyed. "You're seriously considering this? You're not going anywhere without me."
She looks over at the Countess again. "If we decide to take this opportunity, I would be accompanying. I may not be a combatant, but I am a capable scholar, as well as an excellent medic when necessary." Well. It's not technically a lie. Not really.

"I have no objections to that. Every few weeks we find a destination."Allyria said curtly, as if to put an end to an argument before it started. She herself was a capable scholar, warrior, and medic, as well as craftsman. For all those areas she excelled, she failed in the handling of money. It was lucky an ancestor had left so much behind sitting in a vault that hadn't been opened in decades. She had the right symbol, the people at the bank just gave it to her. It was positively perplexing at the time. Now she saw it as a blessing. "Lord Wylmont, if you could sign the loan document please? I'd like to have that finished."The half-breed was prepared for some kind of back and forth about the lady not going along because the assignments were dangerous and deadly, or something of that sort. Honestly, Allyria had no such thing, but it was true. Every single expedition had some kind of grievous violence involved. She thought about the most recent one. Those crow demons were awful. She imagined the head that Jorkahn Wealddir had chopped off after she had blasted its skull open with magical glass. The head was still cawing, the body still flailing after all that violence done to it. She could only imagine what other horrors there were. But the riches. The riches were worth it. Her hands found the amulet. It was so damn hot. Sweat was starting to bead on her again.

"Oh." I said. "Right." I nodded. I had never penned a signature before in my life. Now I began to sweat again—it wasn't even particularly hot. I looked down at the signature. Where did Astris sign? Was it this looping thing here? Where was... there's a line under it, right? By all that was good, what should I do? I briefly glanced at Astris, then to the quill in the inkwell. How could I manage to keep this from ending in a disaster? Of these questions, there were none that couldn't be answered by just doing the thing I was meant to be doing. I picked up the quill and wiped the excess ink off on the well before taking it to the agreement. Several minute drops of ink splashed on the edges and around the bottom. I lifted my gaze to both of the women, apologetically. "Sorry..." I said, before looking back down. Mistakes were about to be made.
DO THE THING Unaided Knowledge: Failure [Literacy/High Cruic] Cj1apynR I found a blank space and more or less scribbled a brief horizontal line towards the bottom of the document. I hoped that was the right thing to do. I hoped. It was clear the man had no idea where to sign, nor did he have any dismissive attitude towards the Lady Wylmont joining him on acknowledged dangerous expeditions, which may be nothing more than hard labour.

Astris watches, feeling badly for Ikram, but unwilling to embarrass him by attempting to help. After the small disaster that was his signing, she gingerly hands the contract back to the Countess. "We appreciate your patience, and your business. We are also interested in your offer of employment. Perhaps we could go over the details at a later date?" The day was wearing, the heat was stifling, and although they had a successful endeavor, she's just feeling more drained by the minute.

Ah... oh poor thing...
She thought as Ikram attempted to sign the paperwork. He finished and the woman passed the contract back to her. She let it sit on the table in front of her, not looking at the actual signatures. She trusted that they were signed with as close approximations to their names as possible. She would have to later inquire as to which property was purchased so she'd know where to send mail to them if that was necessary. She folded her hands and smiled when the woman suggested meeting at a later time.
"Yes, that's perfect. You have this address no? Feel free to send me a letter with your new address when you purchase the property. We can coordinate via letter or meet in person by doing that. I'm going to go to lunch at the Serpent's Head Inn, if you care to join me. If not, that is fine as well."

Heultrios 1st:
I had no illusions that Allyria might be at the Sorath venue of her business. I knew better. She was doubtlessly bridled with the business of scouting the expedition for which she'd hired us. Astris had too been busy, so she had meted me out the exact amount required for payment and placed it in a sack which I was to leave with whomever was in charge. I took some insult—exclaiming that I knew perfectly well how to count coin, she had said that she was only trying to make it easier and I insisted she hadn't and some shouting was done. For that, I had regret.
I would need to make the matter up to her on my return.
I took my horse and rode into town on it. Once there, I retraced Astris and mines' steps from before, and in the company of my rather dull mount I set out through the streets to find A & F Ventures once more. I took in the scenery some, as well. The signs of the drought were still present. I also felt more than several eyes on my person. Riding a horse anywhere in Cruinthe seemed to attract some attention. Riding a horse with a purse as large as the one that I carried in my hand? That would attract some more attention. The thief who would try to make a living off of me would find themselves first in a fight, and second in a hole.
The market was less bustling than it might normally be, so I made good time to the offices on the edge of the Ring Market. Once there, I dismounted silently and tied my horse to a pole before letting myself in the door. A bell chimed cheerfully. I stood before the counter holding my coin and observing the new stitches across the back and palm of my glove. No doubt Allyria would be pleased to know how well her equipment held up to the trials of the wilderness. Or would she be disappointed that I'd damaged it? I thought. It didn't matter yet, regardless. I shook my head to clear it of the thought and looked to the back door.

A young man, maybe in his thirties came in through the back. He was cruinthian, obviously, and clearly seemed to be working there. He was well dressed with long cloth pants and a flowing white shirt, his hair was cut short, and he spoke with a decently tolerable East Skaraptican accent.
"Good day sir. Do you need something? The proprietress is not in town today."
The man gestured that he was welcome to sit if he wanted to. This man himself preferred to stand, leaning up against the wall a little. There was an air of delinquency to him.
