(This is open to anyone who wants to join it, but if no one does it's another home thread with Tyr crafting.)
The flames blazed back to life with a few pumps of the bellows and some added wood, with Tyr hanging around a bit more it was easier to get the thing up and running again each time. With his recent acquisitions the smith had decided it was time for a bit more adventurous of a crafting endeavor. Actual weapons and armor would be his work today, he was going to outfit himself then work on getting some things to trade. Maybe a few random experiments if he felt up to it. Actually an experiment would come first, Tyr decided to try his hand at some wood working while the iron heated up.
Making a bow was an interesting thing that he'd only seen done a few times, not too many people used them so there wasn't much chance to try his hand at it under one of his old masters. Taking some of his newly acquired oak wood the smith started shaving it down, slowly creating the curves and handle, trying to keep the strength of the wood to allow for the stacking of the draw, while allowing it to bend so it wouldn't just snap on the first poor fool that tried drawing it.
Weapon crafting I check to create a bow out of oak wood.

Though successful in the initial part of the construction, Tyr has run out of wood. (assumed the usage of 1 oak wood, as it was not specified how much was used).

With the core of the bow made, Tyr gathered up the shavings and started trying to piece them together on a table to form the ends of the limbs. There was an ancient method of plying them together to create a layered wood, using a very simple glue and some decent know how. It allowed him to recycle the discarded wood shavings and use less overall wood in the creation of the bow. Efficiency was a beautiful thing, saving resources allowed you to make more things for less money.
Roll for efficiency.
Failed.
Not enough of the pieces lined up to make proper limbs, and shaving down another block of wood would be a waste since you could just carve solid limbs anyway. Taking the remaining oak wood Tyr carefully split it in half and started shaving each one down into the outer limbs for the bow. Attaching them would be easy, same thing as before to laminate the wood, you just opposed the grains and got a good recurve out of it. Added some spring to the bow, making it harder to draw but increasing the speed and power behind each arrow.
Weapon Crafting I to create the rest of the bow, if this is needed.

Roll unnecessary. Initial crafting check a success. Uncut leather necessary for completion.

Ethan found himself a little more in the range of being bored this day. Rather than just a chasing a real mage lead of 'Hey magic over there somewhere!' he decided today was the day to be sticking his nose around a little. He was in need of money, and of some quickly. Mage hunting was starting to hit a bump, they were either unfortunately registered or going deeper into hiding of late. It was probably about time for him to resort to some old fashioned work, and doing it the hard way. Nobles were not free from him knocking, as the note and symbol for the Sovereign Julgrava was all he needed for permission. Dare they oppose a mage hunter without in-sighting suspicion? Probably not. Besides, Ethan was usually a friendly enough guy. He had made it this far into the Duchy without alerting a soul.
Today the Mardock Duchy was the lucky pick of the day.
Ethan had no real reason to investigate, as even the simple sounds of smithing were all to be heard. It couldn't hurt to just poke his head in and make sure of that. What he saw was nothing out of the ordinary. Just a young and well off looking man, manning the forge. Crafting what looked to be a bow. No magic here. Nothing to see, though he was not expecting it.
The forge was a nice and warm room though, and Ethan nodded at the man.

The limbs slid on nicely and Tyr set the wood down, there was only one part left to make. He started cutting leather into very thin strings, trying to get them as fine as possible. Making a braided rope out of them would create a decent bowstring, at least one that was better than nothing. It was mindless work though, he could keep the blade running without really having to look at the leather, and it was useful because it let him look up to see someone walking into the fishery.
"How goes it friend? Come to do some work or get some work done?" It wasn't often another craftsman showed up to the fishery, generally it was someone needing Tyr to fix something, or having a job for the Duke to take care of. "The tannery is empty, and I'll be done here very shortly. The forge is occupied I'm afraid but I shant be here more than an hour or two more." With the strings cut he set a braid, twisted it some of the way, braided more, and repeated the cycle. It was quick, dirty, but it worked. A little bit of animal fat covered it to make it stick like sinew and it was done. Actual sinew would have been better but you used what you had. Stringing the bow was easy after that, and the smith set it on a rack to sit while he hammered some iron.
He took two ingots worth of iron out and smashed them into a solid rod, trying to shape it efficiently to avoid using a third piece of iron.
Roll for efficiency on longsword creation.
Failed.
Unable to hammer it into the proper shape and still be solid enough Tyr added a third iron ingot in and started hammering it out evenly. Two angles on each side for a blade, two prongs for a guard, one rod for a handle. The minor details could be handled easily after the main forging, it was the shape that was important. Sharpening an edge onto the blade, wrapping the hilt, all things for later. With the shape hammered out Tyr gave it a final heat and plunged it into the barrel, feeling the sweat start to drip down his brow. It would be wonderful to have this succeed, an initial piece to demonstrate his work, it would really suck for it to fail. A learning experience yes, but an expensive one.

Despite Tyr's skills at ironworking and weaponsmithing he failed to craft a longsword.
-Either recover 1/3 of your materials or attempt to salvage your work and craft a longsword by rolling for skill.-

"I don't need anything." Offering a smile as he instead sauntered into the room, getting a better look at the outfit the man ran. It was rather impressive. He didn't craft weapons himself, but from one artist to another he liked seeing what others had. If he still had the apothecary set up he had five years ago, well his craft wouldn't be resorted to a bubbling pot over a fire and crushing leaves. Ethan displayed a band with an ouroboros, showing his left side just long enough.
"All looks fine in here, just appreciating another's craft." Bowing his head slightly. He wasn't here for harming the man, simply doing his job. Should he ask about mages now? Or wait? What could this man even now.
Then Ethan realized he did not know the man's name. "I am Ethan Atherton, what is your name?"

A kingsman eh? So be it, they happened by every now and again. They were people all the same, it didn't change Tyr's attitude towards them much. He just made sure to support Julgrava whenever it came up and they were around.
"Another craftsman! What's your trade of choice? Leather? Metal? If you ever need a place to work you're more than welcome to our facility here. It's open to any practitioners of the crafts. If there's something we're missing, just let me know and I'll see to it we get it." Tyr took pride in his workshop, and his work. Speaking of, the sword had started to hiss and steam, the metal bubbling in a way that nearly ruined the weapon entirely. He had one shot to fix it, and he took it. The sword went back into the fire for a reheat, and he tried one last time to save it.
Screw it, skill check to save the blade.
Failed.
The metal cracked as it went back in, and Tyr sighed. Losing the metal was a shame, but it happened every now and again. Nothing to do but move on. Another longsword could wait though, the Duke wanted to try his hand at some armor this time. He pulled out another ingot from the fire and started separating it into chunks, hammering each into thin, curved plates. These would be fit over sewn leather to create plated boots. A simple concept, but a good place to start for an armorer.

Jorkahn had woken up much earlier than intended. Why, you may ask? Well, to be quite frank he fell out of the tree he had chosen to nap in. Apparently timber was out to get him this day, nearly crushing him at one moment and seemingly booting him from its grasp the next. His back had been bruised and he spent a good few minutes stretching it out before heading down the rest of the mountain to the Duchy. It didn't take him long to find, he had seen the direction both Tyr and his people before then had gone.
It was nearing midday, maybe later when he finally reached the village. He had slept maybe thirty minutes before being rudely awoken. It was enough to give him a second wind but it likely wouldn't last very long. Either way, the boy would try his best to power through the lethargy. He had no reason to stay within the forest, he lacked the essential skills that his potential new found friend possessed. It would do him no good to dawdle. Though Tyr had asked for his presence later that night, the wanderer thought he would make his way to the village now, maybe explore a bit, become more acquainted with the town and it's people.
For a few minutes he would just explore, taking in the sights, smells, sounds and souls around. When he was satisfied he would ask for directions to the Artificery and meet up with Tyr, and maybe some others that he hadn't accounted for.

"It's a pleasure, Duke Mardok." Presenting a slight little incline of his back, in Tyr's direction. Ethan watched the crafting with just a little more than passing interest. Forging things like weapons and metal made much more money that a few potions. To make that money was having some to spend, which Ethan never had before. So he was stuck in making potions, not it turned out horribly for him. Like all others, mages needed to drink and it was an easy kill...or capture if they somehow managed to survive the dose. Sure the official statement was capture, but if there was a death it was never looked into.
"I'm much more of a herbs and alchemy sort of person, goes with the work." His brown eyes swept around the artificery. "I suppose if I ever retired and had the coin, this would be a much easier way to live comfortably."

"The liquid trade eh? A very interesting art that I'm sad to say I have very little knowledge of. Useful if you can learn it though. If you stick around I might be able to set up something here for you, I would love to learn what you could teach." It was one of the few trades the Artificery couldn't currently support, though if he could ever get an alchemist to stick around he would try to. The things you could learn to make with alchemy were vast and varied, and useful in ways the material crafts couldn't always be. It bridged a gap between the magic and the material, and since magic was officially banned Alchemy was the best thing common people could really get their hands on sometimes. If they had the coin for it.
"But if you're not here to make something, or have something made, you must have some business. Not often you see a Kingsman around without a reason. I'd hate to keep you from something." With the boots in good condition Tyr moved on to some gloves. Same concept, slightly different application. Two more ingots came out to be hammered into plates, some more leather was quickly cut and sewn into rough gloves. It was the sewing of the plates onto the gloves that was always tricky, getting them to layer without catching each other and allow for as much motion as possible. Do it wrong and some soldier might close his hand only to have a plate bury under another, leaving him unable to let go. Great for holding onto a weapon, not so great for pretty much anything else.
Efficiency check to use less leather.

The town was bustling with people of all kinds. It had been a few weeks since he had been in a real town, the only ones he had passed through had been ruins of what he assumed to be ancient cities. He had no way of knowing, his father forbid him from reading the few history books in his private collection. In other words, the past was just as much a mystery to him as it was to everyone else.
When he had his fill of wandering Jorkahn walked up to a nearby stall and asked the shopkeeper where the Artificery was. Actually, he stood there awkwardly for a while trying to get her attention. When she finally noticed the shopkeeper gave the boy a good look, obviously perturbed by his rather mysterious garb and way of acting. When she had looked him over, and perhaps decided that he wasn't here for ill, she gave him directions. It didn't take him long to find, the building was rather unique and he had passed it at least once during his meandering.
There was smoke billowing out from one of the chimneys of the tall building. It seemed that Tyr was home, if not perhaps one of his apprentices? Jorkahn stood in front of the large double doors for quite a while, unsure whether to enter or just turn the other way. He had been asked to come at night? Would he be interrupting something important? Did Tyr not trust him now that he mentioned he was interested in magic? Maybe it would cause him less problems in the future to just head on his way and stick to the long wanderer thing he had going on.
The boy shook his cloaked head and pushed the doors aside. He was surprised how light they were for their size. He entered the building and was taken aback by how grand it was for such a simple building. Crafting tools of every manner were laid around and many facilities were set up. Jorkahn looked around and found the forge and anvil as well as the person he was looking for. He dared not come closer, however, as he realized there was another man there. The thin boy kept his hood pulled close, his eyes and ears both hidden.
