Species Sensibiles, A Treatise on the Anatomies and Physiologies of the Sentient Species Inhabiting the Ver'cahal'chaal Region.
By: Wilehlm Zurke & Orellana Mandrake
Section One: Cruicius Sapiens (Commonly referred to as Humans)
We begin with humans because they have the most physically basic structure compared to the other races and also seem to resemble the other races in overall basic structure.
Humans are bipedal mammalian creatures with two arms, two legs, a torso or abdomen, a head attached by neck arranged in a pattern that centralizes all limbs around the torso, with complimentary limbs on opposite sides. They have little to no fur on their bodies unlike other mammalians. Portions most covered in fur are the top of the head, or face in males, and groin, only in adults.
Adult humans average between five feet to six feet in height. Their colorations vary but are restricted to earth tones. Eye coloration is more varied with blues and greens being among a percentage of the population. Most human fur is colored a shade of brown or black. Roughly twenty percent of the population has blond hair hinting at a possible elven ancestry. Some four percent of humans have red hair, a genetic anomaly that could mean deadly mutation in a community.
Humans need to spend roughly a third of the 24 hour daily cycle sleeping. Most humans are diurnal and will sleep at night. Among other needs are eating, drinking, and evacuating digestive systems. A majority of the organs in a human are believed to be for digestion of food and liquid. All except for the heart, which punps blood through their bodies as the source of their life, lungs which allow them to breathe air lest they die, and brain which houses their soul lest they be mindless.
As humans are omnivores, like many of the species in this treatise they can eat a wide variety of plants and animals without becoming sick. The most beneficial food for humans as it is the most filling is the potato, where as the dragonfruit may be delicious, it does not fill the stomach.
Humans are capable of mating all year, and producing viable offspring fron such encounters. As humans are either male or female there is a fifty percent chance the offspring will be one or the other. Humans are also capable of mating with elves of all types. They are not capable of mating with Skaldi or other animals.
Human offspring take a period of nine months to gestate inside their mother until birth. Then they take about four years until their memory begins to work properly. After eight more years the average human child begins to change into an adult. Females will gain larger hips and breasts, while males will gain more fur, larger shoulders and a larger musculature. Around this time females also begin to cycle their fertility as the moon turns. Roughly every 28 days a females fertility will cycle.
Humans can recover from a variety of small wounds without aid. However most serious wounds or toxins will end a humans life. A human dies when all of their lifeblood exits their body, they stop breathing, or their lifeblood stops moving in their body due to their heart being injured. Humans may also die of old age after living between fifty and one hundred years.
Section Two: Elves and their subspecies.
There are two kinds of elves to note in this treatise. High elves with their fair skin and hair, and dark elves.
High elves are the original form of elves. If one transposes a human outline over an elven one of this nature the elf is on average taller. They have no body hair whatsoever other than that upon their brows and heads. Most elves are incapable of growing facial hair. Their ears are an obvious marker that separates them from humans. Elves almost always have blond hair, and green or blue eyes.
Elves are notably immortal in that they stop aging upon reaching their majority, and do not die from advanced age.
Elves can mate with humans but not Skaldi or other animals. Elven females fertility is consistent with a decade long cycle. As they reach their majority twice as slowly as humans this is likely to give the elven parents more time to raise the child effectively. Half elves will reach majority as fast as their human cousins. Elven males do not broaden like the male humans instead they gain some muscle and their ears get longer, though the females change into adults in the same way.
Elves also has similar needs as humans, though their cycles are twice as long. They need to eat once every eight or sk hours and should sleep for sixteen hours after being awake for thirty two hours. Gestation periods are between sixteen and eighteen months.
An elves internal organs are generally regarded as a mystery beyond the facts that they have blood, ergo a heart, breathe, ergo lungs, and are sentient, ergo a brain.
Dark elves are an entirely different matter. They can only be regarded as a subspecies based on one characterisitic, pointed ears.
It appears that is where the similarities end. Male dark elves dont grow into their ears. They don't grow much at all, being on average shorter than the females in a curious biological adaptation. In fact, the only way the males mature seems to be higher bone and muscle density on the current frames when they reach maturity which does not lend itself to greatly increased strength like in humans or elves. In fact the females are on average physically stronger than the males, being taller by a head or more, and having a frame that lends itself to strength compared to the nearly childike form of the males. It is the supposition of these authors that the males are merely there to carry out fertilizing the females to perpetuate the species, and serve no other useful biological function within the species. This is likely the reason why males are generally treated in a marginilized fashion in dark elf society.
Dark elves tend to have a wide variety of differences among them. Some can see perfectly well in the dark, but bright light such as sunlight is blinding others can see as well in the dark as in the day. The majority of dark elves are immortal so long as they are living in a community or their own people. This is a fascinating biological function as, when they spend enough time away from their people they begin to age beyond their majority and may eventually die of old age.
Dark elves have similar needs to humans. They require to eat, drink and sleep. Difference being they need not sleep as long as humans, three to four hours a day seems to suffice.
Other physiological differences with humans include coloration. Most dark elves are a shade of black as we can see it. Half breeds are a shade of grey. They all have white hair on their heads and brows with no body fur. The females are fertile at all times once they reach majority unless they become pregnant. Gestation periods are the same as a humans. This biological adaptation has led to the over population of their race. The females upon reaching the age of twenty four begin to change to adulthood. This change appears to be similar to human females except they have noticibly denser bone structures and musculatures. The adaptation in the authors opinion is likely due to potential cave ins in their underground homes.
While human male muscle fiber is plentiful it is spaced out compared to a dark elf female's muscle fiber. This puts both the human males and the dark elf females on par with one another in contests of strength.
In regards to half dark elves, they share similar aging with their human cousins as well as overall appearance and structure. Some dark elves can pass themselves off as a human if their skin is light grey or they are dark enough to resemble a darker human. This quality is rare among individuals, maxing our at one percent at the most.
Dark elves internal organs differ from humans. They have a heart, lung, and brains, but their digestive system is notably smaller, consisting of less than half the mass of a humans digestive system. They have organs whose function is a mystery. One secretes a black substance, weighs roughly three pounds, and is grey in color. Another is connected to the womb of the female, and looks like a fan. Its function a mystery.
While dark elves are an interesting subject in regards to biological adaptation to a species surroundings, they are abominations and should not be considered elves at all. As their one similarity is likely an anomaly.
Section Three: Skaldi
Skaldi are not considered sentient. It is important to bring this up as the argument remains that they are capable of reason. That argument is false and there is no scientific or academic proof.
