The Material Plane
There are multiple planes of existence one can visit, and one might say there are an infinite number of these planes. However the one that almost all people exist on and will remain on for their entire lives is the Material Plane.
This realm is made up of matter and standard energies that follow physics and only deviate when magic is involved.
The Spectral Realm
This plane of existence is a twisted mirror image of the material plane. However, it operates under different rules. There is no living matter there, one will find no plants or animals like they would in the material plane. It's denizens are chiefly shades, a kind of lost soul, various ghosts, the occasional demon or angel, Sufferi, and the rare planes walking mage or traveler.
Living people can cross into the spectral realm and survive, but it is chiefly a realm occupied by the dead. When people with immortal souls die, their soul slips between the world's and winds up here. Here, if they are not resurrected within are certain time frame, they either become ghosts of some kind, shades, or sufferi. Most of this depends on the lives they've lived before.
Ghosts of all types are holding onto a regret or desire of some kind. They maligned close to where they died.
Shades are obsessed with imparting pain and horror on others and will occupy places of great tragedy or places with large concentrations of people. They will hunt ghosts or travelers seeking to devour them. Shades were all people before, but their shape is dictated by their nature.
The worst fate is becoming a sufferi upon your soul can suffer upon death. These people reject the reality that they are dead so completely that they become avatars of suffering itself. They roam the spectral realm alone, searching for a means to end their pain. Unfortunately this very pain is what makes them so powerful. Shades and other denizens of the spectral realm avoid Sufferi at all costs.
The Screaming Hells
It has been confirmed by many reputable scholars that these places exist. They are indeed horrible. However, the threat that a soul can go there upon death as some kind of divine punishment is entirely false. There are no documented sources of humans or other races passing through the spectral realm and descending into one of these hells. Each hell is lord ed over by a dark god, and many of these dark Gods are elemental in nature. Their hells are reflections of them.
The denizens of the hells are chiefly demons of various ranks, and the dark god. In the order of living creatures demons and angels rank above mortals and immortals, and above ghosts, shades and sufferi, yet they rank directly below the lesser gods like the Dark gods or Light gods. They are two ranks below the greater Gods.
Beastial Demons are the lowest kind of demon. They have no ability to think beyond the necessary actions to devour the body and soul of everything around them. A Skulvor is an example of a beastial demon.
An order above are sentient demons, imps. These creatures are small and energetic. They aren't terribly smart but typically they are quite strong. They are really the hammer before the mind. Pixies are an example of imps.
An order above imps are fully sentient demons. Each individual demon among this order is unique among its kind. Supremely strong and very intelligent. These demons are not to be taken lightly.
The Bright Heavens
Like the screaming hells but more righreous, and brighter. These planes similarly exist beyond the spectral realm where no soul can reach them. Their occupants are entirely angels and light gods. Like the hells, promises that good behavior will get your soul into one of these heavens are categorically untrue. There are no accounts of mortals or immortals ascending into the heavens. The Chesuan faith promises this to all its members. A lifetime of service apparently guarantees entry.
The light gods tend to not interfere in the affairs of other planes. They are entirely unconcerned by the suffering of the masses. They have made their perfect worlds, and they have made their angels to guard them.
