Heading back to Korasus was priority after the battle in Morith. Once things had been cleaned up and Fyrra felt that it was an appropriate time to leave that is. The pair had taken the highway and found themselves on the border of Karligar territory. There hadn't been anyone guarding the border at the time so they proceeded onward, expecting to be stopped by a patrol in no time.
The journey from Morith hadn't been too eventful. Up one hill. Down another. And with no bandits or other unsavory types hounding them they only had to watch out for monsters at night. Fyrra had been hopeful to reach a territory that was better patrolled and safer than the province of Morith. She did not realize it's Governor also owned the land she had crossed into.
Merrake had wound up taking the role of cook again. As Fyrra had no knowledge or skill in that regard and anything she attempted was either burned beyond recognition or so undercooked that starving was preferable. This was less a point of contention and more an opportunity for Merrake to make fun of the Kalimbra.
-"I'm serious. I don't know anyone as bad as you at cooking."-
-"Oh hush. I've never had the need, what with your wonderful talents at my disposal."-
Speaking in their native tongue without having to worry about prying ears or offending anyone was liberating. The Hanneth were a strange, ignorant, and prejudicial bunch. One word of Drokagr out in their spaces and they were ready to lynch you in some villages. Fyrra hadn't personally been subjected to that. She had been lusted after, and Merrake had been there to kill the would be rapists.
Touching Fyrra without her permission was a crime akin to murder and punishable by death where she came from.

Several soldiers from House Karligar came down the highway to greet the women. Though they were heavily armed with state of the art weapons, they were no acting in a hostile manner. All they were supposed to do is collect tolls from people. They sat atop their horses all day, shot the breeze, and that was about it. They didn't feel the need to complicate their business more. They were well paid by the duke, and there was no cause to rob people when they were already giving you money. They'd approach the two traveling drokagr women with ease, not wanting to appear threarening. No one wanted to chase anybody this early.
"Morning. Did you by chance already pay your toll to enter Karligar Duchy?"

Merrake was initially fearful when the men began to approach they were on horse back and were armed to the teeth. Though Fyrra's necromantic powers had expanded over the past couple of months, Merrake had more or less stalled in her progress as a warrior. She knew she could not take these men on and live.
Fear washed over the bodyguard like a wave crashing into the crags of the darthak shorelines. It was assuaged briefly when the cavalry sounded a greeting and asked about the toll. They hadn't yet paid. She didn't know what to do, but her hands absently wandered to her weapons.
Fyrra spoke up though, not seeming afraid of them at all.
"Good morning sirs! No, we haven't yet paid the toll. There was no border station along the highway to do so. I considered our options and decided that paying the toll to the nearest representative of this duchy would be best. We don't want the Duke's rightfully owed coin to wind up in the wrong hands. How much is the toll?"
Merrake began to relax. Her charge seemed so in control of the situation. There was no need to panic. Not all men were monsters.

"Yes well, good morning. Now then. The toll for passing through Karligar lands is half a Ritz per person."
"Are you sure?"
"What? Yes. Half a ritz. It says on the paper the captain showed us point five duc. That's half a ritz."
"But isn't a duc already a tenth of a ritz?"
"Are you trying to tell me that it's half a duc? 5 cor? To enter the duchy?"
"I'm saying it's vague. We should take them with us to the Duke's castle and get the question answered."
"Sounds reasonable I guess... would you two mind coming with us to Karligar Rock? So we can get the toll sorted out?"
The men had started to dismount from their horses, seeing as the people they had detained were not on horseback. It would only improve their Duke's honor to offer a lift. They were all about that. Everything his standing in the realm improved, so did theirs. Problem was, he was technically wanted for treason. An accusation they believed to be false.

Fyrra did not see a problem with that proposal. Especially since they did not seem to know exactly how much the toll was. They knew it was five. Not if it was five ritz. Five Duc. Five Cor. Five piranhas, or five teeth. Whoever wrote the law must have left it ambiguous. Something that could be fixed with a polite conversation. Fyrra counted herself lucky that she did not run into particularly odious guards. They would have made things more difficult and perhaps would have demanded more than a reasonable fee for crossing into their Duke's lands.
"That is... agreeable. How far is it to your Duke's castle?"
-"This might not be a great idea."-
Merrake said. She was not in agreement that they should go with the men. There were more of them than there were of her. And of course the same argument stood that Fyrra could now more than take care of herself. But she did not like any of this. The Kalimbra would have to sleep sometime soon, and that would be when she was most vulnerable. The bodyguard was nervous about the invitation. And these men were uneducated in what the Kalimbra was. She would hate to have to kill anyone and provoke this Duke.

"Perhaps fifty miles, ma'am. Only a few days walk. We shall give you a ride. How do you prefer to sit?"
The soldiers were very considerate concerning the status of the Drokagr women in front of them. They both appeared to be well off. The unarmed woman appeared to be rich. It would not do for them to lay harm or insult upon them. They were afraid of what their duke would do to them if they failed to be good hosts to people that were potentially his allies.

"Ah, gracious of you to offer a horse. We will ride together if you don't mind pairing up with one of your fellows. The law does not allow me to be touched by those that don't have express permission, and among us only my bodyguard has permission in certain circumstances, sirs."
Fyrra tipped her head and bowed slightly while explaining herself. She was trying to seem apologetic about the situation. She also did not want to give off the impression that she was going to try to steal a horse. That would be a pretty rude thing to do in her book. As she brought her head back up she looked at each of the men to Guage their response.
Merrake, similarly, hadn't taken her eyes off the men. She was still suspicious of them. But so far they had been reasonable. If only slightly intimidating by simply being mounted warriors ready for battle. Now that they were trying to arrange the travel situation for the best speed, things didn't seem so bad. The bodyguard was caught between wanting to lower her guard because there seemed to be no reason not to, and keeping it up because paranoia.

"Never heard of that law before."
"Best not chance it, mates. Lester, Marco, double up."
The caballarii shuffled themselves around leaving the two women a chestnut brown mare, saddled and ready to go. Once they had mounted up the horsemen would lead the group on towards Karligar rock to get this toll business sorted out so that it is clear to everyone. Even the illiterate. It would take most of the day for them to return and go up the mountain towards the ancient and dilapidated castle. They would arrive well after dusk.
