The morning saw an unusual amount of activity around Kell's manor house, men running to and fro dressed in battle armour, sharpening weapons, tightening straps and gathering up supplies for their advance. Kell and Kevin stood in the middle of the flurry of activity shouting out commands into the crowd of men moving like so many ants, each trying to ready themselves for the move, they'd been training hard but this was their first case of real action. For their first attempt at real action they weren't going to be doing any fancy business, Kell didn't feel experienced enough yet to be trying anything to bold, instead they would simply march out with infantry in the front and archers to the rear. He wasn't really expecting much resistance, he'd already gone and scouted out the area and had seen no signs of any sort of military force over there, this was more as a show of force rather than just him walking in by himself. Here was the hope that there wouldn't be any trouble, if they could just come in peacefully and convince these people that they were better off with joining then there was hope, he wasn't looking to spill innocent blood.

The invading troops would find themselves in the middle of foreign woods, with no trace of human activity. There were a few animals trails clearly visible, but nothing showing the presence of a nearby village or troop movements. From his previous trip Kell would know of the two villages in this county, one in the woods and one near the middle of the plains.

The first village wasn't to far from his current position if his memory was correct, the village was nestled in the woodlands and hadn't seemed as if it'd pose an issue, although he hadn't really gone near enough to get a huge amount of detail he only really knew where it was.
For now Kell would simply march his troops towards the first village, scouts would be sent out to check their path, he'd seen no traces of any sort of enemy troops but it never hurt to be careful, especially considering this was his first time leading an army and he had very little practical experience. Some would spread out slightly to watch the flanks whilst the others would move ahead towards the village and hopefully spot any problems along the way.

After several instances of the men not really following orders properly they finally shaped up and marched towards the village. The scouts reported nothing found as the troops advanced, and eventually the sounds of life started to pick up through the woods. Unknown Enemy Forces-Force Size Unknown -Force Location Unknown

Kell could hear people, the scouts had nothing to report and so far it had been smooth sailing. Maybe he'd been right in that he'd not before found any hostile forces and there simply weren't any, it would be lovely if that were true but until he knew for sure he'd act as if there were potentially hostiles and be ready to combat them should they appear.
It seemed they were rapidly approaching the northern village, that was likely to be the noises he could hear. Kell drew back the bulk of his forces so as to not scare the people ahead and sent some scouts towards the village, hopefully they were just civilians, if they proved to be so then the scouts were under instruction to try and discern if there were any hostile forces in the region from them.

Kell's troops were hesitant to follow him to the village edge, but eventually acquiesced to the commands. The scouts entered the village and found it to be free of hostiles, but the locals provided no useful information outside of some mutterings about local bandits claiming the area. Local bandits. So it seemed that they weren't alone, how he hadn't spotted the bandits the first time around he couldn't be sure, but the villagers hadn't said much more than there were local bandits that seemed to have claimed this area for their own. How many of them there were or where they were they couldn't say, but at least he knew for sure they were about now somewhere.
Kell pulled the scouts back into line and began moving south towards the second village in the county. As he moved once again, with the infantry directly in front of his archers, scouts would fan out to check the way and check for any potential ambushes, the people in the first of the two villages hadn't been able to give any decent information, maybe those in the second would be able to provide him with some more detail.

As everyone formed back up to leave the first village behind, Kell's soldiers started to grumble at the lack of effective leadership. They eventually got around to following Kell through the woods again, but there was plenty of mumbling in the ranks as they marched. Things were quiet along the trip, but after a few miles the scouts would start reporting less and less frequently. That was, up until they stopped reporting back in at all. While their fate wasn't completely clear, it was pretty obvious something had happened to them.

The scouts never returned. It worried him quite a lot that the men he'd sent out to scout as they advvanced were late, and then worried him even more when they were incredibly late, it was unlikely they'd gotten lost and not a soul had returned of those he'd sent out.
While it could have been wolves or something similar that was quite unlikely, not with so many lost, he would mourn them once all was done but for now he needed to find those responsible. The men were growing more agitated with his lack of proper command, but he had no way to remedy that, he wasn't experienced at this and was really learning as he went along, their growing ire was understandable but unfortunately unavoidable.
For now they needed to hunt down these bandits, for now they'd continue on their way to the second village, once they got there they could hopefully gather some more information that would help them track down this hostile force.

As Kell's leadership failed to reach the men again they would go nowhere, preferring to rest a while longer from the marching. Eventually they would get going, but were in no hurry and only made it a short way towards the next village. As they made it out of the woods the sun started to dip in the sky, suggesting only an hour or so more before nightfall.

They were rapidly losing the daylight. They'd cleared the forest now and were still no closer to actually finding these hostile forces, playing this game of hide and seek with the bandits was becoming a frustrating endeavour and his patience was beginning to fray. If he could at least get the men to the second village then maybe things would improve. At least then they could potentially have a rest, and if not then they could at least get some information from these villagers on the location of the hostile forces. If he had to stay the night out here then he wasn't going to be terribly happy really, even if it was in the relative comfort of the village.
So saying Kell spurred everyone onwards towards the village, hopefully they wouldn't complain to much more, and if his luck stood they'd find out where these bandits were and have them sorted in time to go home. His luck however rarely held.

Kell's soldiers found themselves listening to his command, but not quite the details of it. They marched, but never in a straight line and ended up going the wrong way. Every time Kell tried to correct them, they would turn, but end up going the wrong way yet again. They ended up two miles west of their starting point, darkness having fallen an hour before. The men were hungry, tired, and generally unhappy with the way this campaign was going.

They'd gone absolutely the wrong way once again, it seemed that either he was a rather incompetent commander or his men were quite incapable of following even the most basic of commands such as march this way. To Kell's mind it was likely a combination of the two, he wasn't being very clear in his orders particularly and was to vague ti seemed for them to follow, he had to remember that they had about as much training of being an armed force as he did of leading one.
Either way they were definitely not on track, darkness had fallen and no one was in much of a state to continue onwards. The men were allowed to set a camp and take their meals and sleep. A guard rota was set to prevent them being ambushed in the night and everyone was allowed some rest. Hopefully they'd pass the night without to much issue, then in the morning once all was ready they could begin on their way back to Nelara. They'd had no luck so far in finding the bandits that controlled these lands and continuing on in the state they were in wasn't really an option.
