"Kell, I'm going to be honest with you here, can you actually fight? I'm not talking about sitting and leading an army or directing patrols or the like, I mean physically go against another person and beat them or even kill them should the need arise." The two had just been sitting peacefully in Kevin's hut, Kell going over paperwork and Kevin repairing tools he'd been brought. The question was so unexpected from Kevin that he was pretty much unprepared for it.
"I guess, if push comes to shove I can, I'm not a fan of going around starting fights but if it happens I'm not going to turn and flee." He wasn't a coward, just wasn't particularly gifted at fighting and would only fight if there was a good reason to do so, it was quite simple really.
"Do you even have anything other than that sword? I've seen eating knives with more of an edge than that thing." Kevin spotted the blade resting on the chair next to Kell and drew it from the sheath, running a finger across it and shaking his head in disgust. "I'll make you a better weapon, and some armour if you like? You've done well for these lands so I'd hate to see you die the first time a bandit or another beastie sees you." So saying Kevin threw the blade onto a pile of scrap metal and drew several ingots from underneath a workbench. "That and I want to try something with this darned Hydrillium, we've got so much of it now we can probably afford to make you a decent weapon or something. Got some other fancy stuff as well if you'd like?"
It was quite sudden, his old blade had been useful so far and had been enough for the times he'd needed it...but something better would be nice? And maybe some protection. "I guess? A better sword would be nice" Hydrillium was good, it would hit much harder than his iron sword and he could enchant it the same. However Cordite was something they also had in abundance, a fantastic conductor for magic, he put up a finger to Kevin before retrieving some Cordite crystals from the warehouse. "Add these in as well, they'll make it a bit more than a boring blade, add some aesthetic to it." It was a bare lie, but he still wasn't comfortable enough to tell Kevin the truth, and Kevin didn't care enough to ask so long as he got to try his hand at Hydrillium. "A sword first."
Kevin stoked up his furnace, adding far more fuel than normal so that he could properly work the Hydrillium, gathering his tools and an ingot and going to work. Hydrillium was difficult to work so he'd have to put in much more work than normal.

"Two sets of armour if we can would be good, I can keep one in the manor as a spare just incase, only if we have the resources though." In reality he had another idea for the second set, but it was arcane in nature and so he'd have to go about it by himself later, but the excuse of needing a spare he hoped would hold up with Kevin.
He didn't seem too bothered by the idea, simply nodding his head and loading up more ingots onto the bench, he'd taken most of the Hydrillium in the warehouse and brought it inside, they were likely going to need quite a lot of it. They decided to start on the helmet, a full helm that would cover his whole head and neck other than his eyes, with a removable plate in the front that would allow most of his face to be visible should he wish. It'd give him maximum protection and for now that was mostly what they were worried about.

On the third attempt they managed to make a second helm, a near mirror to the first which for now was put to one side as the first part of the 'spare' set of armour.
Once that was done it next came to the chest piece, a much larger piece of work that would cover his whole torso, by the end of this he'd basically be a walking suit of armour the way things were looking. Kevin picked a small piece of Dragonfruit off the side and bit into it, the juice revitalising him slightly, the second more so.

It came together quite quickly, the method still fresh in their mind from the making of the first which was good, they were making good progress and so far hadn't burned through too much of their hydrillium stocks, if they had enough left by the end Kell was considering putting some of his other ideas into action. For now though, arm protection was paramount, after all they were what was holding the weapons. Still throughout Kevin was chomping on fruit, he was hot and sweaty from all the work and the heat and four more fruit disappeared very quickly.

They had a break, they were in a rut and there was no point carrying on with it when they were both getting disheartened. "Nearly there boy, just two sets of leg and foot armour then we have the necessities done, anything after that more after that we can deal with afterwards but I'm mainly concerned about the basics of not getting you killed. A shield or something could be quite useful also, for someone like you it's probably a much better choice than multiple weapons, far more defensive and easier to use than having to worry about working two blades." Kell conceeded this point, as much as he'd love to see himself swinging around two swords with finesse and ease he knew, in reality, he was more likely to hurt himself from having to split his concentration so much, and with a shield he could block and defend himself better for sure.
First however they did need to sort some armour for his legs, it'd be useless him having this full kit of armour if someone could just easily hack at his legs and take him out from there.

Two more tries two more wasted ingots, two more failures joining the rather large pile, they'd failed far more than they'd succeeded but in the end they'd managed a full set, the next two sets of leg armour came out perfectly for him, it took about an hour after that to adjust the straps in each piece of armour so that each would fit him snugly when worn, but once all was done he had two full sets of armour that he could wear should he want. That and a very knackered blacksmith sat proudly examining his newest creations whilst helping himself to another four of the fruit, he was absolutely knackered.
There's a couple of other bits i'd need still if you're willing? Nothing important just a few little trinkets, a Drokagr custom when going to war. Shaped like miniature shields and kept on your person they'll prevent harm. At this part Kevin did look skeptical, but to him it just seemed a foreign custom he thought was odd, not something that Kell had made up on the spot for an idea he'd had.

"There are several other items that i'll need, recently i've acquired myself a man of qute specific talent to work for me and he will require several item in order to complete his work." It was much easier he'd decided to make Kevin thing he'd employed someone than to just come up with random reasons for needing all of the various odd bits and pieces he was going to ask for, he could just say they were needed by his employee who required secrecy and anonymity to work properly. However now Kevin was openly hesitant, but not to the point where he'd go against what Kell had said. "Kevin if we are to fight off threats then we must have someone that can fight fire with fire surely? What would we do if mages turned up at our door, i'd imagine the same thing we did when a crow did." It was a harrowing memory for him and he hoped it'd have the same effect on the smith, but instead his response was quite simple. "Just gotta be careful when using fire that you don't burn your own house down." He was quite obviously displeased but he still began working as Kell rattled off the list of items.
"A ball of cordite, approximately so large" Kell said, stretching his hands to around the size of a football, "The surface as smooth as can be had. For that it was more a case of finding one of their larger crystals and carefully cutting it to shape. A difficult task especially considering Kevin was no skilled Jeweller.

The hydrillium ball came out fine and was added to the pile along with the trinkets, spare set of armour and the other cordite crystal. "I found this fur on a shelf in the stores, any chance we could make me some decent clothing from it? I've still only got the one set of clothes I brought with me and I'd rather not have to wear them forever." It was however not something he'd normally wear, but Kell agreed there were some situations when looking more lordly and being noticed would be quite useful even if he wasn't wanting to take advantage of that yet.
"Also you're going to need some arms and armour yourself, can't have the lands losing their only blacksmith the first time he gets too close to some bandits." Kell winked at Kevin, it was fun to use people's own words back at them.

Kevin took charge of his own build some more, grumbling about how he was too old to learn how to use a sword, he was stuck in his ways as a blacksmith and he'd act like one still even if he had to have a weapon. The end result was a rather well made warhammer held in Kevin's hands, he'd been hammering metals all his life so if he had to fight a hammer would do him.
When it came around to armour he grumbled some more about the price of it all and how he wasn't worth the amount, it took more arguing than Kell would have liked but they eventually came to the compromise of Kevin getting some torso armour at least.

neither of the two attempts at the armour succeeded, and Kevin was fed up of trying. It took him a while to transport everything over, the majority of it was metal or other heavy materials and he could only carry so much at any one time, it took several long trips before everything was placed around the inner sitting room of his manor on various pieces of furniture, simply wherever he could find rhe space for them. He'd been having ideas now for some slight more adventurous enchantments he could put on equipment and now he had the things he needed to make those ideas into reality.
The first shield trinket was the first item he picked up, figuring he'd start small for now, it was a fairly simple enchantment, just a little rechargeable shield that'd activate if he was hit, he didn't fully trust his own ability to dodge or block an attack and it never hurt to take precautions.

He felt the energy leave his own stores, and he could feel the small shield shaped trinket holding onto it, but there was only one way to check. Kell held the trinket in one hand and drew a dagger in the other, bracing himself and gritting his teeth he drove the dagger at a slow stab towards his hand, he was fairly confident if things went wrong he could move his hand in time.
Luckily for him before the dagger made contact a weak silver sheen surrounded Kell's skin, halting the knife and preventing Kell from possibly losing fingers. A grin broke out on Kell's face, it had worked as he needed it to. With a simple thought and a whisper of energy drawn into the trinket again the shield was dissipated, another small trickle replenishing it's stores so it'd work as he needed it to next time. Then he'd set out to place an identical enchantment on the second trinket. Normal (0) Power (20) Thaumaturgy M (20) Artificing II (10) Arcane II (10) Shielding II (10) Threshold: 70

It was exhilarating almost to direct the will of his energies, feeling them rush through him and into something was satisfying, especially when the items then worked properly, this one had gone the same as the last with no bumps so he felt no need to test it having had the first work as intended. Next on the line was the cordite crystal they'd shaped. This one was going to be difficult, he was planning to layer multiple enchantments onto the piece of crystal, he knew enough about the properties of cordite to know they'd hold, the problem more was he wasn't sure of his own skill in this. It was a larger undertaking of Artificing than any so far.
The first to hold to it would be another shielding effect, this one however would be able to convert damage he could take and mitigate it through sacrificing large amounts of his own internal energy stores. It was more complicated than a simple shield and functionned in a different way, but it would also hopefully last longer as his own energy stores seemed far more substantial than that of the shields he'd made so far.

Once again things went smoothly, he was lucky so far that things had been going to plan, the first enchantment stuck. Now it was time to lay the second on it also, Kell drew from his wellspring energy and condensed it, placing a hand again o nthe crystal and imparting more power into it. It was pointless if he was the only person to benefit from the shields, with a few modifications he'd be able to protect some others as well, at least then Kevin could probably be safe also.

The second slipped on quite easily, with this he'd be able to shield a good amount of people near to him, or so he hoped at least. Maybe if he were to give versions of these to his own soldiers that could help, shield them from archers and the like as well as mitigate some of the damage. It was a solid idea but for now they took too long and too much to make, it was far to much considering each could probably only shield a few men, maybe once there was more need for it he'd revisit the idea. For now however what was the harm in adding something else to the mix, with the high conductivity of the material and an idea in hand Kell set to work. It was another that he'd not attempted before, he'd attempted simple regeneration of wellspring energy and imparted it into several items, but never so that it would effect multiple people in an area.

Cordite truly was a remarkable material, it shone with the power of several enchantments, each having held without being overriden or changed in any unforseen ways by the other. It was likely he could fit more onto this simple crystal if he wished but for now he saw no reason to do so.
It was time to make a start at the armour, the set he'd be using to begin with. Hydrillium held enchantments to about the same degree as iron and he intended to make full use of that, the more useful things he could pack into it the better. For the helmet he'd decided to just go quite standard, his own pool drained far too quickly and filled not nearly fast enough for his liking, the helmet would go a ways towards sorting that hopefully.

The helm was done, but there still remained the rest of the armour pieces. The chest was the next stop, might as well work his way down the armour and do it in some sort of order rather than flitting around the pieces, not that that wasn't ana acceptable option, just some sort of order was always nice. For his chest piece he was hoping rather to strengthen his stance, he'd be wearing quite heavy armour and if he went down he was going to go down hard, getting back up afterwards would be a struggle, so the trick was to stop himself falling down.

But to show for it he had half a set of high quality armour...now if only the legs would enchant easily. They were going to be going a similar way to the gauntlets, simple defensive enchantments to help him stay in this life, he wasn't planning on going to Azuloth too soon.

By no means was that the end, it was only the beginning of the enchantments he was gong to heap onto this blade, it was a fantastic blade physically alone, once he'd finished enchanting it it'd be beyond that, a truly good weapon that would hopefully last him as long as he would need. Firt of all it would hopefully assist with his energy issues, in combat his pool would very quickly run dry and he couldn't afford to wait around for it to replenish, if it was him or them he'd need the ability to cast all of his varioous shields and spells that he'd been working on. To that end he'd come up with the next effect, just a simple drain, if someone attacked him and didn't survive the combat then he'd need what energy their pool could offer him, and if they did manage to kill him then he wouldn't have need of it.

The enchant held easily, cordite was once again proving it's worth, even if it was incredibly difficult to get hold of, it was definitely worth that difficulty when it came to it's conductivity. No time to ponder though, he was flagging from exertion and desperately craving some sort of rest, but still he was resolved not to until he was done.
Standing in the room and merely holding the item wasn't a good way to focus, with the lack of comfortable chairs Kell instead placed himself cross legged on the floor with MageBlade laying across his knees. Kell closed his eyes to remove outside stimuli, hoping it'd help him focus more as he continued to layer enchantments onto the blade.

No problems here, this one slid on almost too easily. Cordite was fast becoming one of Kell's favourite things, just purely because of the ease with which he could enchant it. All of the enchantments had gone on easily enough so far, maybe he was getting bette, after all this must be good practice surely. Now back to work.

With the blade now completed it was time to move on, Kell placed it back onto a table and picked up the cordite core, returning to his cross legged position and placing the core on the floor, gathering up the second set of armour and arraying them around the core as if it were the core of a person.
After taking a few deep breaths Kell began, placing a hand onto the core and shaping the energy for several moments before beginning the enchantments, muttering under his breath to help focus himself.

Once the basics of the suit had been enchanted the core glowed brightly with power, Kell drew lines of power across each of the pieces of armour to tether them to the core and each of them glowed weakly also. Now he just needed to add a little bonus to it and this one would be done as well.

He was done finally, everything was enchanted that he felt needed to be, he was done now with all of this for the day luckily, his mind was a fog from all of the hard concentration and his head hurt. Kell made his way in short order to the pallet he slept on and fell on it, so tired even that he forgot to take off his equipment as he normally would and instead just fell asleep the moment his body touched his pallet. ·····

Morning did come unfortunately, the only reason Kell knew was because of Kevin waking him with a grumble about how he'd had enough of a lie in and now it was time for work. "We've made you a bigger set that's true, but we still need something for when heavy plate armour isn't the best option, some lighter armour is sometimes the better choice. Come on." And with that he was out of the door, leaving a rather groggy Kell who felt that he'd had not nearly enough sleep to be quite so active today as he was yesterday, but if he didn't go it was likely that Kevin would just come back and be even more irate.
It did take him some time to get up and he was still half asleep when he made it into Kevin's hut. When he did he was greeted by piles of leather and thread as well as a box full of needles and a pre-heated forge. "Why have you got all of this leather? We have Hydrillium now it's much tougher." Kell questioned, picking up a piece and running his hand over it, the majority of it seemed to be the wing leather he'd picked up at Innorsford a while back, although some was part of the stock he'd bought from Kable. Quickly he found himself with a piece of each in hand trying to figure out the difference. Kevin tore his head away from stoking his forge for long enough to notice and quickly explained, "The wing leather is slightly tougher, would be better for the armour whereas normal leather will make better bags and the like. We are going to use the wing leather to make you a set of slightly lighter armour, heavy plate isn't useful if you don't plan to be in the front lines and someone like you is safer with a bow far away from the fighting."
Kell wasn't quite sure whether to take it as an insult or not, but settled on it in fact being more like the truth, he wasn't fantastically useful in the front line. He wasn't at all battle trained and if he got the chance would much rather be further away if he had to be there, he knew his limits well enough to know that against a trained fighter he wasn't going to have much luck.
It was going to go about the same as the last time, Kell rolled up his sleeves and got to work, placing needle and thread as well as several pieces of wing leather onto a second bench while Kevin began forming the ingots that would reinforce each piece of armour.

This set was completed with barely a single struggle. "Leather is so much easier than Hydrillium, doesn't quite offer the benefits but still is useful. And with the reinforcing iron plates in the pieces you should be alright." Kell nodded along, he'd never done much sewing before but he'd proved to at least be able to sew in a straight line and so complete some of the simpler bits.
"Now how about that weak bow you've been using, I've watched you draw that thing barely straining a muscle when you practice. If the draw weight is that easy for you then why not try something a bit tougher? It'll give you more distance and more of a punch. Get my carpentry tools and i'll see what I can do." Kevin said, pointing towards a box of tools to the corner of the room before walking out of the door to fetch some wood from the warehouse. In short order he returned carrying the first of several pieces of wood, dropping each onto the table before going and fetching the next.
Kevin started first giving a rough shape to the wood, paring it down slowly but surely, the process seemed far too arduous to Kell, but Kevin stuck to it with intense concentration. Slowly the frame began to take shape in the wood.

The bow however took far longer, and for the most part all that Kell could do was sit there and hand instruments to Kevin as he went about his work. It was truly wondrous to see Kevin transforming a piece of raw wood into such a fine tool, Kevin's hand was steady throughout and by the end he had a bow worth the time and effort. Once it was strung and adjusted Kell took it in hand, finding that he struggled to pull it back and couldn't even make it to the full draw length, it was a powerful piece of work, requiring more strength than he currently had in him to operate. Kevin allowed him to struggle and chuckled as he did so, "That's more like it, you'll be needing some more work before you can pull that properly. But before you run off and start on that we need to get you some arrows first, those ones you used before was near as shoddy as the bow, you could snap the tip on a piece of hard leather." Kevin looked almost disgusted at the idea of such shoddy workmanship.

The arrows caused more trouble than the whole bow. Several pieces were discarded, some were too flawed and some with knots that meant it would be impossible to get more than a few arrows from it. By the end however after wasting rather a lot of wood they managed to get a stack of decent arrows out of it, each far stronger than the basic ones Kell had been using before, those had been stored in his pocket whilst the newer ones now took his quiver.
And so it was that Kell left Kevin's once again with a set of armour, this set at least was much lighter and took him far less time to transport over to his manor. He might as well just make a little armoury within the house now for all the sets of armour and weaponry he was gathering in there. On more thought actually that didn't seem like too bad of an idea, although just storing them all in his Planar Pocket was also an idea, then at least he could access them always.·····

Now came the more mentally taxing task for him, each piece had the capacity to be artificed due to the piece of iron put into each as a reinforcement, now he had to put some in. The enchantments that he'd imparted into his Hydrillium set seemed adequate still so he saw no reason not to use them for this one also, it was just a matter of getting together the will to do each piece as it seemed to take a lot out of him. He assumed it was something that with practice would get easier, but for now it drained him if he had to do too much in a short time period like he did now. Better now than later.

The gauntlet's and greaves like in his heavier set he gave the same enchantment, nothing all that fancy just simple survivability, that was after all the number one point of this armour, so the shielding effect that the two pieces of armour imparted across his body when he wore them would definitely give that a small boost.
Last but definitely not least came the bow, this one was slightly more complex and not just a simple buff to the damage of the bow, instead it would help him in his supporting role and hopefully prevent people from getting to close to him, if they couldn't reach him they'd have a much harder time hurting him.
