Redgar returned to Karligar rock victorious. He had conquored most of Corday, and he had done so with fewer troops than his opponent. Which to say, his opponent was not Duke Corday, but the tyrants that had been running that land in their rightful lord's absence. They had been disposed of, their skulls decorated the Corday manse. Installing Vassals to look over the Corday lands came to mind. As he had little time for running a county.
He returned with some troops and a useful captive in tow. Baalrung had taken a liking to DuPasca, knocking her over and liking her face every few hours. The smith was leery of the massive beast. It smelled like it could spend a week in a bath and still not be clean, and it had a fierce and terrifying face most of the time.
The Duke had brought the smith to the ancient and dilapidated forge that remained within the confines of his crumbling castle. There was iron laying about for her to smelt and forge into useful tools and weapons. The fires had been stoked in anticipation of her arrival. Redgar had nearly shoved her in and proceeded to sit on a wooden chair in the room.
DuPasca stared at him. Apparently there would be no rest from the road. She thought that being dragged to the forge meant she was supposed to get to work right away. But on what? As much as the dire wolf was obsessed with her the Duke ignored her.
Then Katrina appeared in the doorway. She held her striking figure against the stone. DuPasca immediately hated her. Katrina had perfect hair and a perfect body. She was rich, obviously, and lived in a castle. The woman was also scary in a sexual and predatory way. DuPasca dud not like the way Katrina looked at her. She felt like she was going to be devoured.
This family scared the smith, more than she has ever been scared.
"Is this the craftsman you captured? She looks young."
"Yes! Dear sister, let not age be the test, as you say. But skill. What was it that we needed her to make?"
"Your troops secured a stockpile of tools that will be of great use to us. The only things we'really truly lacking are woodcutting axes. With those we'll be able to fully rebuild our industry and infrastructure, as well as Corday's."
"Now, then smith. Wood cutting axes for the industry of your land. Maybe you hate us for taking over Corday? Tyrants were in charge. They are dead now and if Lord Henri returns from his sabbatical in Korasus then he may reclaim what is his. In the meantime we will not let a friends people suffer from lawlessness or Tyranny. We are not the enemy."
The Duke said as he got up from his chair. Katrina left with him.
"I'll get to work then."
The smith mumbled to herself.
She set to work creating woodcutting tools. Something that had been pointless under her former lord. Corday did not have the benefit of forests. Karligar did, and the order made sense. She did not delay.
