Redgar and his small company of cavalry arrived home at Karligar Rock after their failure at New Skaldira tired and desperately needing a morale boost. The people would begin to really starve soon without help. Soon the old and young would begin to die from malnutrition. It was a crisis and Redgar saw now way out. The plan had failed, and if Mardok was sending aid its couriers were either making off with the stuff or dying. He didn't think Mardok would go back on his word. The noblemen were friends and they had a good relationship as far as he knew.
As he entered the crumbling castle he found that his sister was waiting for him, as was Mina. They both looked somewhat grim. Yet at the same time they were almost elated.
"My news is bad, Karvan did not want to enter an agreement. We are doomed."
"We have good news and tragic news, Scyld."
"Start with the tragic news, Katrina. That way we can celebrate the good news by getting absolutely destroyed on Hek'Cruican wine."
Redgar slumped into a chair at the great hall table, and began disarming himself.
"Narth has committed suicide. He flung himself from the sanitary tower. We interred him in the family crypt."
"Oh, damn. I'll take that wine now I guess."
"Now the good news. We got a letter from the crown appointing you the Provincial Governor of Morith. There comes duties and powers with that, but we can use that to make sure our people don't starve and revolt."
Katrina's report elated Redgar. Governor of Morith? That was incredibly important. Usually only people from that province were appointed.
"And I have other news. Corday Duchy has started to devolve into lawlessness. Some of their people have come to us for aid."
"Well... Corday has been a long standing neighbor. I suppose we can move in aND provide security. I'll call up a levy, and start arming our cavalry."
"And I'll start handling the administration of Morith while you're on military exercises."
Redgar went to open a cask of wine. He poured three ivory horns and placed them in front of the girls. He raised his horn in toast, the women did the same.
"To Narth, and our beginnings."
"To you Redgar, the new Governor of Morith."
