Near enough to two days later he found himself in the forest surrounding New Skaldira. He needed a horse, or something, or anything really so long as it'd mean he could get around faster, at the rate he could walk currently it was pathetic, it'd take him weeks to get anywhere from New Skaldira in the same way it had taken weeks for him to get there. Unfortunately he knew of no stables where he could buy some sort of mount, and he doubted he had the money anyway.
But he'd made it into the trees, just about, and sat down with his back leaning up against one particularly mighty tree. It was calming to sit where he was, the wind rustling through the leaves and the sun mostly blocked by them, it was a very comfortable little spot. Unfortunately he did have to move, he'd come here to gather and hunt so he thought that at least some should be done before he relaxed for too long, it was in his best interests at least.
To begin with though Devin decided to climb, from up high he could get a much better view of the area, and if he could get a better view of the area then he was pretty sure he'd be more likely to see if there was anything worth hunting and or gathering. That and he just wanted to climb a tree, tree climbing was fun and had a hint of danger, just the kind of activity he enjoyed.
Taking a solid grasp on a branch just above his head Devin planted his foot on the trunk of the tree and attempted to pull himself up and onto the branch.

It took him a couple of tries to get a solid hold on the branches and dig his feet in properly but he got there in the end, perching himself peacefully on a branch just over his own height from the floor.

Admittedly he wasn't all that high up, but the tree's branches were quite spread out and so for him to climb up further would require him to attempt what he'd just done once again. He knew he'd have to sooner or later, his current point didn't give him much more of a view than he'd already gotten from the ground dissapointingly. It was as if the effort of climbing up this far had been for nothing, he'd have to climb higher in order to see anything, but for now he was just content to laze on his branch and examine what more of the forest he could see now.
The forest was teeming with smaller animals, birds, rabbits, squirrels, all going about their lives near enough oblivious to the invasion of the Half-Elkagr. They lived a very simple existance, that was until they were noticed by Devin. A gleam came into his eye as a squirrel bounded into his sights, stopping several metres from the tree to sniff the air, probably beginning to smell Devin sitting in his tree up high. It was unfortunate that the squirrel had shown up when it had, unfortunate for the squirrel that is, Devin not having a particularly great record where animals were involved.
Devin drew back his arm, lining it up with the small squirrel and then whipping it forwards as if he were launching a dart at the squirrel, what he was in fact shooting was much deadlier than a simple dart. Small globules of poison came flying out every time he launched his arm forward, the action being repeated several times and each time a blob going flying, Devin relying on quantity to ensure he hit the small creature.

The squirrel went down easily, covered in globules of poison, so much so that even though it was very weak it killed the creature in minutes, a slow painful death on it's part. Writhing and spasming on the floor at the intense pain, Devin watched the whole time, barely even stopping to blink so entranced was he by the effects of the poison he had created. It was still very new for him to actually use it on a live target, he'd had to suffice himself on merely creating it then disposing of it before, having nothing to try it on. Now however he was alone, he was his own man with no one able to tell him no, he could use his poisons as he pleased.
However there was a downside, the squirrel he was fairly sure would now not at all be edible. even if he could eat it, maybe because it was his own poison, Podrick definitely wouldn't be able to. And if he was honest with himself he didn't particularly want to try eating it anyway, it looked grotesque where it was on the floor and he didn't really want to run the risk of getting poisoned either.
It didn't take long for him to lose interest in the small dead animal however, now that it was dead it was just a corpse, and where was the interest in corpses. He definitely had no interest in corpses, they didn't do anything, there was no life in them. His interest was gained by the idea of climbing further up the tree, he needed once again a better vantage point, his current perch in the tree was nowhere near sufficient in order for him to be able to see further out in the trees, assuming that the foliage wouldn't block his view anyway at that height.
Reaching up and grabbing the branch above him once again, Devin tried to pull himself up so that he was higher up in the tree, digging his feet into any nooks and crannies that he could so that he could pull up that little bit more.

This time he managed it first time, grabbing onto the branch and using his upper body strength to pull the rest of him up until he was resting on another branch higher up in the tree, however this one was slightly thinner. ·····

He could see more from up here, there didn't seem to be much around in terms of bigger prey, it seemed only to be smaller animals along with the occasional cluster of dragonfruit that he could see. Both would be useful to him, although a couple of travellers would probably be even better, wealthy travellers or traders would actually be best of all, but his luck didn't hold and no such people did come along.
After making his way down from the tree Devin moved over to the squirrel body. He'd really done a number on it without even realising, he'd thought that the poison would be quite minor, although he was in no way upset about the fact that it had done far far more than he'd initially thought it would. The stray drops that had missed the squirrel had sizzled on the ground, withering any leaves or grass it had hit, once again Devin was pleased with the potency of the poison that he could produce. He was right though unfortunately in saying that the squirrel was inedible, even were he starving it was unlikely that he would attempt to eat this squirrel, it was far beyond being edible due to the volume of poison that had hit it, there wasn't even any hope that he could just cut off the inedible parts, it had spread too quickly.
It did give him an idea though, develop a weaker posion that wont ruin a catch, one that would weaken, paralyze or knock unconscious the prey without tainting the entire body with chemicals that he couldn't eat without dying. It was a good thought and something he'd have to work on.
