The entire squad had turned around and taken Countess Allenmorde and her assistant Vekkia Av'Keran back to Helkorth. They had acquired a person that they could stand to ransom for their cause. They assumed the dark elf would be worth a great deal of money to either her people or the crown. Other than racist comments the RJG squad had treated her and her companion reasonably well during their trip down to Helkorth. Once they arrived in the city the two women were separated. Allyria was taken to the fortress in the center of the city. Eventually she was placed in a stone room, a cell, then unceremoniously chained to the floor and left there for a period of time.
Vekkia was placed in a similar cell. Their prisons were bare, and on opposite ends of the floor. Just the ring in the floor that both were chained to. No windows, no light, just darkness.
After a time a few well armored and armed men came into Allyria's cell. They placed a chair and small desk at the back of the room. A scholarly fellow followed them in. He sat down at the desk and placed a pile of parchment on it. Then he retrieved a quill and ink pot from his robes.
"Now, let us begin. For the record you are Countess Allyria Allenmorde of Agharta, member of the Sovereign Kingdom of Cruinthe's Gentry, and a Citizen of Korasus. Correct?"

Allyria was not happy with her situation. These people had treated her like crap as soon as she arrived in the city. Whatever happened to treating your hostages with the dignity of their station? She was a countess damn it. She regretted, just a little bit, not even killing one of the racist bastards that captured her. Chained to the floor was no way to treat a hostage.
She supposed she ought to feel lucky. The soldiers didn't rape or beat her.
"I've already said this before. I am a Countess, I do not owe the crown any allegiances. There was no ceremony, no investiture. There is no fealty. I am a citizen of Korasus."
The half-breed was getting tired of being subtly accused for being a spy. She did not care about their revolution or war or any of the political issues. And now she didn't want to care about it from even an academic standpoint. Perhaps that was a problem, she thought, she hadn't cared at all. She didn't think about the consequences of crossing close to territory that could have been contested.
Her legs strained, she was on her knees with her hands stuck in irons. There would be a time to try to escape when she figured out where Vekkia was, and if escape was necessary. Perhaps a diplomatic solution was possible though.
"Can I see my companion?"

"Not yet. If you didn't gain your right to rule over your county and it's people from the false king then from where does the power flow?"
The scholar sat there grumpy. Her continuous denial of the fact that the power had to flow from the false king annoyed him. There was no record of her gaining the land through the true monarch of Cruinthe, the Princess Superior. Perhaps the gray woman was a spy.

From where does the power flow? What power? She owned her land. She bought it. To her it was that simple. The power flowed nowhere. All she did was own and run it. She took care of her people and they in kind took care of her.
"I don't understand your question. I bought the land with money. I own it. I chose to buy it and take care of its people. That's how property works. You like piece of jewelry you go out and buy it. You take care of it, it lasts a while. Just like a business. There's no magic involved."
She was clearly confused, it showed on her face.

What did the little gray bitch mean by not understanding his question. It was simple. The right to rule was not bestowed upon everyone. It was a divine right. The gods granted that power. That was the problem with the false-king. He was a king only in name. The gods did not give him the right to rule. He took it by force of arms, illegally. The scholar was a close student of the law. The old law. He could not abide someone that ruled simply because they purchased land. No, he determined she was a thief, as true to the word as was the sorcerer-king.
"If you did not acquire the right to rule by the gods, or by a true ruler like the Monarch, Princess Superior Avaline , then you are as false as that pretender Julgrava. A simple exchange of money does not grant you the right to rule over other people. You may own the land, but the people under you are led by a tyrant, that tyrant is you. Death to tyrants. You are hereby sentenced to death by exposure. Captain, take her up to the top, strip her, and hang her from a cage. The other gray skin is free to go, her only crime is following a falsehood."
The soldiers would unshackle her from the floor and lead her to the top of the fortress. There at the top with the wind whipping past they'd cut her robes from her, shove her in the cage and kick the cage over the side of the building. The chains rattled and screeched as they ran across the stone roof. They shouted as the last link went taught against its binding. That would be it. They'd leave her there naked in the summer sun until she died. No food, no water, nothing.

Tyrant?
She was a tyrant because no "true" ruler granted her the right to rule? What kind of backwards country is this? God's given right to rule over people? That was insanity. The gods had nothing to do with it. Religion was outlawed in Cruinthe. She doubted very much that the people cared about divine right to rule.
Completely shocked by this malicious turn of events, she sat there ineffective. Her mind misfiring and her jaw loose. She was baffled by the stupidity and insanity. These people were going to execute her for buying land?
Really?
By the time her mind caught up with what was happening she was already stark naked in the cage, hanging over the edge of the building. Panic took control of her mind for a moment, but she strangled it and remained calm. She took a moment to observe her surroundings. The cage was wrought iron bars with no flat bottom hung from thick chain links over the side of the building. Getting comfortable in the cage was impossible. Some bar was always digging into her no matter what position it was in.
No escape plan came to mind immediately that did not result in her likely death from splattering on the ground some hundreds of feet below. She could hear the muffled sounds of the city from where she was, that and the wind.
In front of her was the barrier mountains. She could see them clearly. That meant she was on the south side of the building. All horrible things aside she had a nice view, and appreciated it for what it was.
She thought about Vekkia, wondering if they really let her go. Wondering if she'd find help in time. Perhaps she'd be released after a few days, if she made it that long.
The cage swung gently in the breeze. It was going to be a long time dying like this.

"Shit."
Muttering to herself became the thing to do after the first hour. It did not take long for her to come to the realization that somewhere she had fucked up. Perhaps it was leaving Morith in the first place. Perhaps it was her chosen route. Somewhere, some decision to put herself and Vekkia on that road when those troops were coming up it she made a mistake. Then she realized what her mistake was. It had taken hours of working through the various events that led her to this situation.
Her mistake was she didn't look into the future like she knew she could. She didn't see it coming because she didn't look. She could have avoided all of this had she looked.
Now was the time to look. She calmed herself and focused, looking into the future.

Allyria would see herself from a disembodied point of view, standing atop the smoking ruin of the city. The wind was hot and terrible, it swirled around her in different directions. Much of the landscape was on fire for no reason, smoke billowed high into the air. She was covered in dirt and grime, her hair streaked with the fine black dust that pervaded the air. It was all that clad her. Something screamed in the distance, something horrible. It screamed for blood.

The vision confused her, she didn't know what to make of it. She had seen herself standing atop Helkorth Fortress' tower. The city around her, and the land itself a smoking ruin. Perhaps some cataclysm was about to happen? Some kind of natural disaster that would destroy the city and the region? She did not have time to lose. She raised her palm at the bars on the side, hoping to blast her way out of the cage. The height was terrifying. Dying in the cage was more so. Wasting away in a cage under the sun. What barbarian thought of this end?
For a moment she hesitated.
She swallowed. The bars settled more into her skin, she could feel them scratch into her with every move.
"That's it, I don't care. I'm getting the hell out of here."
Allyria fired at the bars.

The arcane bolt shot free from her hand, hit the bar, and bounced off its edge. The bolt streaked straight into the side of her head, burning a solid hole with its power in her skull. Blood began to pour out of the wound as the horrible smell of burning hair filled the air around her. Her thinking would be slower or faulty until the damage she had unwittingly inflicted upon herself had been corrected.

Oh shit.... oh shit.... what happened...
Allyria couldn't think straight. Blood was pouring from her wound, she thought she was dying. She thought she had somehow blown a huge hole in herself. She was right of course, but she wasn't sure. Her hand was holding onto the side of her head, trying to stymie the rapid blood loss. Her eye on that side was closed to keep the fluid from running into it. It didn't help, her eye stung anyway. She spotted that nothing had happened to the bar that she had shot point blank. The realization of what happened to her took more than a minute as she worked it over in her head. She realized that her head wound was worse than it probably felt like. She had probably blown a hole in her skull.
She was lucky to still be alive.
Thoughts of what to do played through her mind. She couldn't shoot her way out. It was immune to magic. It had to be. Otherwise it wouldn't be a very effective prison or execution method against a mage. That's right, she's a mage. She could do magic. Wind magic, arcane magic, planar magic, shielding magic, healing magic.
Healing magic. She could heal herself.
"D-D-D-Damn. I'm r-r-really messed up-p-p-p. Took me too l-l-l-long to think of that-t-t-t."
She pressed her hand against her head wound harder, and attempted to heal it.

Allyria focused more on healing her head wound than anything else. She had made some progress. Slowing the bleeding down to a minor trickle after the original gushing spurt, and then the second halfhearted spurt. It was important for her to think clearly. She hadn't recovered fully yet. The world was still spinning around her, she was still dizzy. The half-breed got as comfortable as she could in the cage, resting her head against one of the bars while she held her hand to it. Keeping pressure on the wound. She estimated she would need to a few more minutes to heal herself completely. Until then, she was not trying to come up with a new plan.
The sun raked her skin with its rays. She was starting to feel way too hot. Summer was the worst time for this. She would have preferred spring now that she thought about it. Not summer, not when it was hot and humid. Breathing was difficult at times.

The healing was starting to work. She was starting to feel much better. The bleeding had slowed to a stop. There was only the matter of putting the rest of her head back together. There was some flesh that was still singed where she had basically shot herself. It was a mistake she was going to learn from right now. Don't just shoot at bars, see if they repel magic first. She was counting her blessings at the moment. She hadn't died, she could still make a good impact on the world. That was all she really asked for. To make a good impact. Bring education, understanding, etc. to the people. All good things. Things she could do, it just required time.
The people that put her in the cage. She thought about them for while stitching herself up with her power. They needed help. She believed that they arrested her simply because she was Drokagr. Their reasoning to put her in the cage and execute her by exposure was bull. Some kind of cracked up logic that allowed them to execute land owners that didn't fall in line with their rhetoric. If their rebellion took off into greater heights than it had been previously then everyone was in trouble. There needed to be a way to mitigate them in some way.
She probably couldn't stop the avalanche the Royal Justean Guard had started. They had already taken three provinces. She had heard about Delta, and Viktoria falling. Helkorth was the first place they had taken over. When she ran into the patrol it wasn't that far from Morith. She had to assume the trade hub was next. It would make sense. Innorsford and Rosterford would fall easily once cut off from the rest of the kingdom. Not that she knew anything about their defenses.
Her thoughts wandered to Vekkia, and the children. She hoped they were all doing fine. Remy was a capable young man. She had made sure he understood to check in on the kids.

Allyria had managed to finish healing her headwound now. She felt better, her mind wasn't as hazy. She could think again. That was good, she needed to get out of the cage. Either today, or the day after that. Three days and she'd start to feel the effects of dehydration, if not sooner. It was summer and it was hot out. The sun had been beating down on her skin for a while. It felt like hours, she could feel the tingling, the beginnings of sunburn. She sighed and sought to recharge her energy. With the knowledge she knew of the other realms, she opened a small portal to let the energy seep through, and recharge herself.
Nothing had gone particularly awry. Her energy was full, and she had healed herself. She just had to think of a way out of this cage now. Attacking it hadn't worked.
Then she thought of something, the portal she had opened to recharge herself. She could do that, only bigger. She could pass through the portal.
She had never been to the other side before. She realized she wasn't sure what would happen, and didn't even know what could happen. The possibilities were endless. It scared her.
But it was better than rotting in a cage.

The countess saw that she had no choice but to try it. The question had been brought up in her mind, and it was staring right at her, daring her to do something with it. What would the other world be like, what would she do there? Could she survive the transition?
She dragged up the power she had, tearing at the space in front of her, looking for a crack or a weakness of some kind to rip it open. To go in to the other world. She had never done this before, she only knew the theory. Supposedly you could try it anywhere, it didn't matter.
Surprise found her when she grasped the edges of it, it did not need a forceful tearing. It was like drawing curtains for her. It was almost natural to her. She drew open the portal and lunged through it, unaware of what would happen next.
