Duke Redgar Karligar and his Cousin, Lady Mina Karligar had just finished stabling their horses at The Talking Harp. He was unaware that the task he had set out to complete had been done. At this point he was disinclined to continue in assisting the RoC in Kel'Alee. The city offended him. It offended what it meant to be a noble. He was above these peasants and he demanded to be treated such.
But first he needed to find Duke Mardok. Tyr was shaping up to be a pleasant companion. A person he could stand for more than five minutes. He did not want to abandon him to this offensive city.
"I last saw him here on the main street," Mina mumbled.
"He probably went to the ziggurat after talking to those performers. Let us head back in that direction. Perhaps we will met up with him when they direct him where they directed us. Perhaps we will find some nice things to bring home. Katrina would like a gift," Redgar said.

The Duke was in high spirits after securing the trade agreement. There was a sense of having done some actual good for his people, even if they weren't quite his people, that flooded him with inner peace. The city seemed all the more beautiful for it too, music was sweeter and artwork more beautiful. It was all a delight to take in as he walked back towards the inn his horse was at. The idea that he might run into Karligar didn't even bother him, Tyr knew Mina would be there and she at least presented the possibility of enjoyable company. Not that he had anything to back that thought up, it was more that she wasn't Redgar and therefore was probably better to be around. Probably.
As he walked through the streets Tyr kept an eye out for beautiful things he might wish to return with. Kel'Alee was a city of wonder, going home empty-handed would be a shame. There was plenty here to brighten up his manor with, from paintings and sculptures to instruments and clothes. Plus what luck that a friend had asked him to keep an eye out for a flute if he ever visited, and this was the perfect opportunity to do just that. Being so caught up in everything around him Tyr nearly walked into the duo without noticing.
"Ahh, good Duke Redgar and lady Mina, wonderful to have found you again. I take it you were waylaid a while, is everything sorted now?"

"Without a doubt good fellow. This city and it's people seem to have no respect for nobility and what it means. Look at us. Feet on the street. If my boots aren't ruined by the end of the day I will be impressed by their craftsmanship."
Redgar remained angry at the city's guards. Though he was glad to see that the rabble hadn't destroyed Tyr or his good mood. Mina remained in a more neutral mood. Or rather, she was imagining what the city would look like on fire, and was neutral to its current state of being.
To her on fire was preferable.
"I see you managed to get away unscathed. Let us find some merchants with fine goods. My sister will want a gift. She's hard to please. Then we can rest and get out of this wretched city."
He completely failed to acknowledge they were even in the city for any other reason.

Tyr shrugged at Redgar's first comments. There was a massive conflict of opinion here and he wasn't entirely sure he could reconcile them peacefully. "They are a neutral territory with their own laws. Noble or not we are still bound by them. Would you have someone walk into your Duchy and ignore that which you've written into law?" Even if he didn't think he could get Redgar on the same page he was still going to at least try.
The second part was easier to go along with however. Moving the discussion right along without pause, Tyr nodded and started looking into shop windows. "I could stand for some window shopping. There are some things I was looking to bring back and perhaps replicate. Our country could stand to have more art and music in it." Mentioning that he'd be requested to pick up a flute didn't seem entirely useful to bring up. If anything he had the notion that Redgar would then try to use build a connection there himself for his own gain. True or not, that was the opinion Tyr was building of the man. Everything done to further himself, even if it burdened all others.
And it wasn't a perception he liked.

"I suppose. Hmm. Music. Mina, do you think Katrina will like a flute, or a lute or something? Didn't she dabble in music when we were children?"
"Maybe. I don't really remember what she liked."
Mostly because Mina had blocked out those memories involving Katrina. While Mina was wicked Katrina was much worse. Playing together meant that Katrina would use Mina as her personal toy.
Redgar shrugged at her comment. She wasn't being useful. He started towards the market to see what he could find for his sister. Mina followed behind.
"Let us make some good selections from these shops. I only expect their best. Perhaps this city's goods will redeem it."

The idea of Redgar as a child momentarily broke Tyr's perceptions. It was a reminder that no matter what he was like now, Karligar was still human. He could still potentially be molded, his ideas and beliefs changed and made...better? No one could say what was best, but at least more beneficial for the people than just the man. To do that though Tyr would need to learn, converse with, and befriend this man. It would be difficult, but worth it.
"With how the music of the city sounds I have high hopes for what they sell. It lends truth to the stories, it is quite beautiful here in both sight and sound." He'd only heard rumors, but with his own experience so far he might have to take a vacation here every once in a while. This conversation however would be a good start to getting some of the information he needed. "But while I know stories of this place, I know little of yours." Tyr put on his best 'excitedly interested' face as he looked over at the pair. "What are your lands like good Duke?"

Tyr had asked him an interesting question. No one had bothered to ask him what his lands were like before. No one had been interested before. That interested him. Why was Tyr so concerned about that? It took Redgar a minute to work it over in his head. Then he decided that there was no harm to it. He answered the question honestly.
"Karligar rock is the center of it. There are five counties that I have control over. Skarwood, Karligar, Darkholme, Karthford, and Wealdford. Within my borders are eight villages. I have parts of eastern Skaraptica, and a part of the Kushfire region. The people, well... they're a hardy people, some thirteen thousand of them. My uncle's rebellion had forced war upon the entire duchy. We're still recovering. We're trying to rebuild anyway. Many of the necessary artisans and such peasantry are long gone. The price of war I suppose. I had to take the power. It was them or me."
He had started to speak in a sort of distant way. Like he was there, still on the battlefield. Killing and burning. He had put his duchy to the torch, just to seize power. Now that he had power he had responsibility. It wasn't as easy as he had thought it would be. It wasn't as easy as he had hoped. So far, no one outside his duchy had helped him. This was the first time he was actively trying to help people, and that blew up in his face royally.
"Funny. Ever since my civil war, everything seems to fall more and more into chaos."

It sounded like the rebellion had gutted Redgar's lands, and the people were suffering for it. It seemed like an all too common thing, the squabbling of those in charge ruining the lives of all the people that lived under their rule. Regardless of whether or not Tyr agreed with the man's policies, it wasn't in him to ignore those who had need of his aid.
"Sometimes we cannot set things in order ourselves, and need the aid of another. If you are in need of assistance rebuilding I have practice organizing such efforts, I built up my own land only a few months ago." It would also help improve relations between the two, a useful start to building up their relationship. "If you can provide the materials, I can provide the labor. Ahh, this shop looks to be of good quality." Browsing through the window Tyr spied some rather good looking instruments. Perhaps he would find a flute here for Allyria.

Redgar's brain came to a full stop. So did his feet. It was like his brain was stuck processing a huge amount of world breaking information. He couldn't handle the idea that someone would do something for him for free. Where did Tyr benefit from this? Where was Redgar's fucking sister to help him navigate this conversation? She was the diplomatic one. Redgar followed Tyr into the shop and began to browse while talking. Mina followed after him.
"Excuse me. You're saying you'll provide labor to help rebuild my land? For just the materials? That doesn't sound equivocal. I see where I benefit. My people become fit again, their pride restored. My sister crawls off my back, Mina, don't repeat that, and I can start moving forward again instead of mitigating damage."
"If I repeat it, she takes it out on me. The flensing knife is not fun."
"Damn right. Hey, a lute. She'd like that right?"
"Sure."
"Or maybe it was the fiddle?"
"Fiddle is good too."
"We'll go with a fiddle. I mean, what do you get out of it Mardok? I'm not going to bend my knee to you, or your every whim. We are peers."

As the pair perused various instruments Tyr processed Redgar's questions and conversation. He kept hearing about this sister the two had, and every time she came up it wasn't good. She sounded violent and controlling more than anything else. He'd need to know before it meant anything though. Right now she was just a shadowy figure in his mind that constantly tormented her siblings. If only he knew how close he was. Tyr however was stumped himself by how to answer the confused Redgar. How do you explain to someone that you want to do good for its' own sake?
"Well I would need access to your land of course, and with your border control law that would be a hefty fee in of itself yes? Perhaps we could work out a deal there. I gain access to your land for the foreseeable future, and in return I help you rebuild and restore order." Yeah, that sounded like a good way to start things. That was still semi-altruistic, right?
Picking up various flutes to inspect them the Duke found he had absolutely no idea what he was looking for. Everything seemed similar yet different, and there was no telling what mattered. He picked up both an iron flute and a silver one, content to bring both back and hand the silver one off to Allyria.
Buying Iron and Silver flute. 1350 Lira = 1730.8 Ritz.

"Huh, is that what that does? I knew that there was a toll. Wasn't sure how large it was. What do you mean by access? Like, free and safe passage through the Duchy?"
"I think that's what he means."
"If that's what he means then that's fine. I don't see why not."
Redgar picked up the ash carved fiddle. He was sure Katrina would appreciate it, if anything for the simple fact that it was expensive. Then again... she might not like that he spent the money. But it was on her, so what was the harm there? He oscillated back and forth and decided to buy the damn thing anyway. He was the Duke, he didn't have to worry about her flensing him in the middle of the night like Mina had to. He had a little more power than that.

Tyr laughed. He didn't quite mean to, but he did. The short chuckle slipped out of him and he brought a hand up as if to try and contain it.
"You weren't sure how large it was? Duke Karligar, your toll nearly put the country's only established traveling merchant caravan out of business." It had made quite a few people very angry too. Tyr included. This raised a flag or two though. If Redgar didn't know how high said toll was, either he simply couldn't remember or that hinted someone else might be writing the laws.
"We can make this a proper arrangement later though. That fiddle looks fine indeed, are you going to get it for your sister?" There was a topic that piqued his interest right now. She seemed to come up in interesting ways. First by being the one nagging Redgar into restoring the land, and secondly by being a ...well, vindictively painful figure in Mina's life. The family dynamic there was something completely foreign to him.

Redgar didn't quite put it together. He wasn't the sharpest tack. Nearly putting the only traveling merchant caravan out of business with one little toll? How was that possible? The economy must have been worse than it seemed.
"Honestly, I don't take care of that stuff. That's Katrina's work."
He looked over the fiddle for another minute. Then he nodded.
"Yeah. I'll get this for her. We can work out the details later."
He paid for the fiddle, immediately finding a new reason to dislike Kel'Alee. Their money was wacky.

And just like that his suspicion was confirmed in full. Katrina was pulling the strings behind everything, not Redgar. She was the one causing the issues, not him. It wasn't an overly odd situation, sometimes people weren't cut out to rule and an administrator ran things instead. This was common with those too young to effectively control things, a regent would watch over the land while the minor came of age. In this case though Duke Karligar was most definitely not a young boy. That would be yet another thing to look into during his time in the other man's duchy.
"Well Karligar, now that we both have our souvenirs shall we peruse the city for some entertainment? I imagine their taverns are full of music and good food." If Tyr wanted to cement the beginning of their friendship a night of revelry would help. It didn't even dawn on him that a drunk Karligar might talk freely about things, Tyr wasn't exactly practiced in the ways of alcohol.

Redgar and Mina looked to each other before nodding in unison. Yes, drink, food, and good music sounded like a good idea. The day had dragged on long enough for Redgar, Mina as well. For all the things they sought to accomplish here, at least one thing was done. Katrina would be appeased when they returned, and there would be no wrath to follow. That was enough for Redgar. He forgot why else he had come to the city in the first place. It seemed he had a recent events memory on par with some kind of fish.
Mina preferred it this way, not having to keep Redgar from killing anyone over some kind of insult. Sure, he had taken a great amount of time to vent and calm down, but he hadn't done any violence upon anyone. If she had felt so insulted, half the city would be on fire or something.
She shifted idly, Redgar looked to Tyr and gave him a thumbs up.
"That's a great idea. Let's get out of this music stand."
He was ready to leave, he had done his shopping. Mission accomplished.
