At some time, some where, in some plane of existence, Jorkahn needed some things. And you see, Tyr Mardok was rumored to be one of the best at making things. Okay, so maybe it was less a rumor and more of a well known fact between the two of them, but the narrator wanted to be snarky. The former male stood outside the Artificery, wondering if the latter man was home. He assumed, he hoped, otherwise this would be a rather short trip and a very short thread. Entering the building the half breed would find the Duke, assuming he was home, and ask him for a few items. Some of those items would include, "I could use some items, my friend, i-if you have the time. I can pay for them too, if need be." He didn't mean to come off too demanding. Of course, it was very difficult for a person like Jorkahn to come off demanding, but that didn't stop his mind from tricking himself into thinking he was. "I need a more robust backpack and a helmet...Oh!" He had forgotten something, "And a belt if you could! Mine is rather torn up and poorly made." A frown adorned his lips as he tugged on the belt a bit. "If that isn't too much to ask." Silly boy, why must you always be so passive?

And there at some time, in the same plane of existence, was Tyr hammering away at a new design he was trying out. That was pretty much his lot in life, shaping what he had into something more useful. It was a good lot all things considered, because what he made tended to help the people around him. Like now for instance, when a good friend came to his door in need of things. He just so happened to be very good at the making of things.
"I always have the time to make things!" Tyr set his project aside, wiped his hands, and walked over to the half-elkagr. Tyr sized the lad up a moment, retrieved a warhammer from a rack, and held it out. "How heavy is that would you say? Too much? Just about right?" He didn't exactly wait for an answer, instead mounding some materials in a pile by the forge.
The backpack was first. A cage like structure made from one iron ingot, the general cover from five leather pieces with tabs and straps, and pockets sewn out of six cotton sections. All in all a sizable backpack, with plenty of support for heavier things tucked inside.
Crafting a backpack from 1 iron, 5 leather, 6 cotton. K (30) + Simple (30) + Iron M/Tan III/Tail I (40) = DC 100 4DMPI_d8 Automatic success. 12 all purpose slots. Stat reqs: 20 Str, 7 A, 7 K, 6 Ch.
The pack complete Tyr folded it over and laid it on one of the tables between the pair. Let his buddy get a feel for it while he waited for his answer about the hammer.

And that was always a great thing! Making things that is. Jorkahn was taken aback when Tyr suddenly walked up to him and stared. The boy blinked and coughed quietly in surprise, and then took another step back when a warhammer was thrust in his direction. It took the half breed a moment, but he took the weapon from the Duke and held it awkwardly in his hands. Walking to a more open area he began to swing it around. The immense weight at the end of the weapon was throwing him off, and it was obvious he had little to no training with these types of weapons.
"Honestly it feels awkward in my hands. But I think it is just because I have little experience with these types of weapons." Looks of frustration and concentration adorned the lad's face. Every time he swung the hammer something would feel wrong. It didn't cut like an axe, and the extra weight at the head felt more unwieldy because of the sheer mass to it. Either he would over swing or under swing, it was difficult getting it to feel right. It wasn't that he lacked the strength, he was just swinging wrong.
"Do you have any suggestions on how to wield a weapon like this? I feel like I am doing something wrong. I doubt that it is the way the weapon is designed, however." Jorkahn would keep trying as Tyr finished up his backpack. When it was finished the boy walked over and placed it upon his back and began to walk around the room, the hammer in his hands. He wanted to get a feel for how it would or would not encumber him with a weapon out.

The Duke gave Jorkahn a blank stare and waited. He already knew the lad wasn't really adept at wielding hammers of any kind, he'd admitted to wanting training with them. Tyr wanted exactly what he'd asked for.
"That's good to know but...how heavy is it? Too much? A bit light? Just about good?" He prompted the answer out with specific answers, hopefully getting one of them. He needed to know about how much the armor should weigh if he was going to make it properly. The belt could be a bit underweight and turn out just fine, but you generally wanted a helmet that afforded as much protection as possible.
No crafting this round, Tyr wants his answer.

The Duke's stare unsettled the lad. He suddenly lowered the hammer and fidgeted in place a little. Taking a deep breath he finally answered. "O-Oh. U-Uhm. It feels a little heavy, but only when I swing it. B-But I think I will grow into it. This is how axes felt to me before I trained in them m-more."
Jorkahn felt like he had done something wrong, but that was probably just him misinterpreting. The craftsman's change in demeanor had caught him by surprise, however. He was normally a lot more friendly, and the half breed was a timid little guy.

"Good!" With the appropriate weight settled the Duke was back to his cheery self and got right to work. It was an important issue really, you had to know how much people could carry or they could end up with boots so strong they couldn't take a single step. Now set into his normal groove, the shaper threw some more iron onto the fire for heating. He was getting better with the rapid heating of metal these days, probably a side effect of working with steel more often. It made the work much easier though so who was complaining?
"I only needed to know if you could carry it, but if you would like to learn to wield the thing I'm more than happy to part with it. Consider it a gift from a friend!" He spoke between strikes of the hammer, forming several ingots into one massive lump. It took form as he hammered it out around the anvil's horn, turning into a wonderful full helm. As much as he wanted to find a way to cover the eyes, for now this was the best he could do. He put in some leather bits for comfort and riveted them down, before giving it one last inspection.
Crafting a full helm from 5 iron. Simple (30) + IronM/ArmIII/TanIII (50) + K (30) + Forge (5) + Race (5) = Autosuccess Masterwork check: 10 + Knowledges (50) = Three degrees possible. OJPiceBt 8! Three degrees achieved. Excellent Full Helm (4I2L): Dr 55; Req 20 Str, 10 A, 10K.
The helmet came out fantastically and Tyr was beaming as he handed it over.
"Your helmet good sir. Try it on! Hopefully you find it comfortable yet strong."

The Duke's demeanor suddenly changed a second time. It threw the lad for a loop as he didn't immediately know how to react. After a moment of silent contemplation Jorkahn swallowed the lump in his throat and inwardly shrugged. No use thinking about it, just go with the flow and act normal for once. Or not.
When Tyr mentioned that the boy could have the warhammer he had just taken off the wall his eyes lit up and his mouth went agape. The fact that it was free made it all the sweeter? "Really?! I can just have it for free? No strings attached? You don't need any payment? Or servi-" He cut himself short and took a deep breath to regain his composure. Just accept the gift you goofball. "Ignore the outburst. What I meant to say is, thank you very much! I will find some way to repay your kindness to me." With that being said the half breed bent over in a deep bow before rising back up to look at Tyr's latest handiwork.
"It looks fantastic!" The future (or maybe current, timey wimey stuff) Champion of the North took the helmet and placed it upon his head. The young warrior shifted it around for a while and began to walk around. Just when it seemed he was satisfied he suddenly took his new warhammer and, with some small amount of force, bashed it against his skull. The helmet held perfectly, and the only thing that hurt were his ears.
"I'm no expert, but this seems like marvelous craftsmanship! Then again, I shouldn't be too surprised given your reputation." A large smile adorned his face.

Tyr raised his hands and smiled. "No strings, no payment. Just don't break anything I might need and we'll call it even."
It was fairly comical to see the first use of the hammer being Jorkahn hit himself in the head. A good stress test of the new helmet, and comical to boot, but potentially a bad idea in the first place. At least the hammer only caused a minor scuff mark to the helmet. Hopefully the helmet would be just as useful in the wild where things would be trying a wee bit harder to hurt the lad.
All that was left now was the belt. Expanding on one of his first ideas for a belt, Tyr made a pair of guide wires, bundled them in armored plates, attached the beginnings of pockets between the plates, then wrapped the whole thing in leather. The remainder of the leather involved went to making sure the thing was comfortable and the pockets were solidly designed. Couldn't have things falling out of them after all.
Crafting a belt from 2 iron and 6 leather. 30 K + Simple (30) + Race (5) + Forge (5) + IronM/TanIII/ArmorIII (50) = DC 120. Autosuccess. Masterwork check (10+50) = 60/ Three degrees possible. 0eQm38Aj Three degrees earned. Excellent Belt (2I6L) - Light; 20 slots; 60 DR; Req 20 Str, 10 A, 10 K.
Another piece crafted above and beyond the normal tolerance of the materials. It was the normal now, there weren't too many things Tyr crafted that weren't masterfully made. Maybe soon he would have to alter his self-appointed title to something slightly different.
"Your belt good sir, may it serve you well." Tyr held it out with both hands as if he were some lowborn craftsman presenting a blade to a noble. Why not have a little fun with things from time to time?

Jorkahn wasn't the wisest when it came to accepting the generosity of others. His father, being the entrepreneurial maverick that he was, was of the mind that it was better to let the fools part with their money. In other words, if he was in his father's shoes he would take the hammer and run. But his sister, and more importantly his, thought process was of a more goodly way of being. He found himself growing anxious if he could not find a way to repay someone's kindness. So, despite what Tyr said, the boy would continue to think of a way to repay him.
With a laugh the lad exclaimed, "I like to think I am not as clumsy as that!" The now well geared warrior watched his belt be made. Jorkahn himself never had a knack for creation, but that didn't hurt his curiosity any. The Duke took a few wires and hammered some plates on top, among other things. It truly could be called art.
When The Shaper was finished and held the belt up for the younger man to take, Jorkahn was taken aback at first. Eventually a smile crept upon his face and he stood up, chin held high, hands crossed behind his back. He had seen many nobles in Viktoria stand like this when talking to commoners. "Why, thank you kindly master craftsman. It will be used immediately!" Hey, no one ever said he was a great actor. The boy took the belt and placed it on before walking around and testing the pockets. He was amazed that there was so much room in such a small belt. It almost didn't seem possible. And yet, he could tell by it's weight that it was sturdy and could take some punishment.
He didn't have any other favors to ask of the duke of Mardok. He had already done so much for him in such a short time, he only hoped he could be even half as useful in return. "So, how much do I owe you for everything? And, before I leave, do you have any recommendations regarding upgrades to the rest of my equipment?"
May as well get an expert opinion.

Tyr smiled at the lad's comments while grabbing a broom to briefly sweep up. It was one of those things that rarely ever got done due to his constant activity, so he'd learned to work it into his general routine. Honestly it was probably good no one else worked here at the moment, you'd be wading through soot within the week! Or, y'know, not because Tyr would probably just hire someone to clean the place out every day. ...Why wasn't he already doing that? He was going to start doing that. The Duke put the broom down and leaned against a table to inspect the lad.
"Well I've made pretty much everything you're using right now, but that was a while ago. I could probably make heftier versions of everything you've got, but I'd be playing catch-up all the time. You should get some use out of your equipment for now, then tell me what you think you'll need for later. As for a price..." Money wasn't important anymore. If there was something he wanted to buy it was a done deal. What he needed now though was some of the harder to get resources. For instance..
"One dead wolf." It would give Jorkahn some practice with his gear, and it would get Tyr some resources. A win all around. "If you happen to bring more back, I'll see about playing catch-up."

Jorkahn watched as Tyr swept up his mess and listened to him speak. The boy laughed at his comment and looked himself over. Very little of what was on his person wasn't made by the craftsman. It went to show just how much the boy owed the man. Eventually the duke got to the method of payment, and it put a look of confusion on the warrior's face.
"A... A wolf? Huh, I suppose I could do that. In fact I could probably bring a few back. Or, at least their pelts, teeth, bones... Is there anything in particular you need from them? It seemed like a strange request at first, but the more he thought about it the more sense it made. He just wondered what Tyr had in mind.

"Anything, everything. All materials have their uses, and the meat would feed someone here I'm sure." If he was to learn to make everything, he needed the materials to do so. True there was always a market somewhere that had these things in supply, but why not get some people to go hunt it up for him? The woods could use a little clearing, it would provide practice for the hunter, and it let Tyr assess their capability. A win all around!
"Your price is one, but if you do bring back a few I'll see to paying you for them. If you happen upon any other interesting animals out in the woods, feel free to bring them back here as well. I'll pay well for any materials that are hard to get." He would put it up on the duchy task board but the forest would be swamped with hunters in no time, and the Duke would no doubt end up with several hundred dead 'hunters' who failed to realize it was a dangerous undertaking.
"Now go, enjoy your gear!" Tyr would start shooing Jorkahn out the door with a smile. "Maybe show it off a little, get some admirers hmm?" Not that interaction with women seemed high on the lad's list, but a well supplied warrior was likely to get someone's attention.

Jorkahn listened as Tyr explained, nodding his head as the man spoke. The boy wondered what the Shaper intended to craft from the resources a wolf would provide. He also wondered if it had to be a wolf specifically. After a moment the boy just shrugged and then was shooed out the door. He smiled and moved to leave, was half way out the door before turning to say something more.
"If you aren't swamped from customers, which you will be when they see my gear, and feel like joining me on the hunt you may. If not the next time you see me I may have grown a bit furrier!" With that the Champion gave a wave and was off. Maybe he should get straight to hunting? Or maybe he should visit his family first? Decisions.
((End thread I think))
