Dear Lord Corday,
I hope this letter finds you well. Summer is here and there is a lot of hope around the country for renewed activity and good harvests. My sources tell me that salamander beef is in a rare upswing. A lot of the ranches had done well in the spring it seems.
I hope the recent taxes have not deprived you and yours too much. The crown can be so overbearing sometimes.
Me and mine, unfortunately, are effectively bound by law by your neighbors, Karliger. They've enacted an unfortunately extremely legal act that will force me to pay another 10,617.5 Ritz to them simply for entering their land as a merchant company.
There are various issues with the act, as certain border posts where a writ that is mentioned in the law could be acquired don't exist. It's a clever financial trap. Knowing the crown, they'll blindly stand by Duke Karliger, and not even investigate its terms. We could fight it in court, as this hampers the Corday-Voss agreement. But I'm afraid that unless I pay the remainder of the balance, which my coffers don't have, and my Caravan is not worth, then all of my goods and coin will be confiscated. The Corday-Voss agreement has 20,000 in investment, but I can't access that without the approval of the Financier. If I can pay the debt I can pass peacefully into Corday
If I refuse to go peacefully the law allows for Karliger to execute myself and every one of the members of my caravan by impalement. As you know, the crown will enforce this and extradite us at first chance. The Karliger are known for their violent tendencies. Recently the old Duke was murdered by the current Duke, as were his uncles. According to the locals all of the children were confederates to the crime. I'm not sure how much of that is true, but there's nothing anyone can do about it. Duke Scyld Redgar Karliger is rightfully the Duke.
These people are dangerous. Do not trust them. I truly think bringing violence against them will only bring about worse violence. A mind that will remorselessly kill its own parentage, and thousands of citizens, destroying everything in the attempt to kill its uncles, can not possibly be human, normal, or peaceful. I can only imagine what they could do if revenge motivates them.
Insanity rules here.
