"Is that a book?" Al'asard sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose as the fifth person approached him. He had forgotten that books along with literacy were not common among the populous of Cruinthe. Al remained silent for a moment, hoping that the young man would note his irritation and leave him alone. That was not the case. He stood his ground awaiting a response, forcing Al to take his attention from his book.
"Yes, it's a book. No, there are not any pictures in it. To answer the other questions everyone else inevitably asks me, you wouldn't understand what it's about and yes, I understand it." Al'asard closed the book, using his index finger as a page marker. Al had managed to swipe the book from a passing caravan that had been making its way towards the Korasus. He hadn't had a chance to actually look at it before his fingers worked their magic. It certainly wasn't his first choice in reading material being the second volume of a set of tomes detailing magical theory written in High Cruic as opposed to Arcane. While he had told the man he understood it it wasn't completely true. Some of the subject matter flew completly over his head, but that was to be expected considering his own lack of magical ability.
"Are you one of the teachers?" The boy asked expectantly.
"No, I'm no-"
"Because I have a question about one of the pages they gave us." Completely ignroing Al'asard's words the man unrolled a piece of parchment and began to point at several words. "I don't understand these words." Al' wanted to argue with the man but he figured it would simply be faster for him to help him with his assignment to get him out of his hair. Al leaned forward and looked at the paper before pointing to the first word."
"Promulgate, it means to declare publically, like a decree. The promulgation of the Sorcerer-King Julgrava's orders was met with outrage and helped spur many to the side of the Alliance." Al read the sentance to the man who made a slight O-shape with his mouth as he realized the meaning. "If you used the context clues you would have been able to figure out the word. You wouldn't have known the exact meaning, but you would have been close." For the next hour Al'asard went over the syntax and gramatical structure of the sentances that the man had trouble understanding. Satisfied, the young man left Al'asard to return to his book.

Al'asard had made a horrible mistake. In helping the young man he had set a precedent and rumor began to spread of the half-drokagr who was willing to help trainees in the Alliance with their literacy. When Al awoke ready to start on another hard day of drinking he was greeted by not one but four young men. All of them held pieces of parchment and quills and began to clamor for his attention. The hungover darkling scowled, covering his ears against the din before he could take no more. "Quiet!" he cried out, raising his voice to cut above the noise. The boys shrunk back momentarily before beginning their prods, this time much more quietly.
Al sighed as he pushed his way past them and out into the morning light. They flocked behind him like ducklings following their mother as he trudged through the crumbling town of Innosford. Eventually, Al made it to the spot where he had first met the first boy. A waist height wall that had once served to separate the road from a nearby farm. All three were in disrepair but the crumbling wall had proven a comfortable spot to read. Al resumed his perch from the day prior and then waved to the boys.
"I'm much too besotted to deal with your shenanigans. So if you want me to help you you're going to have to agree to a few conditions. One, keep your voices down. If anyone raises their voice above a whisper so help me I'll tear all of those parchments to shred. Two, same as one. Three, if you get answers from me I get drinks from you. Fair is fair after all. I'm in possession of a service that you sorrily need whereas I don't need your coin. It's just a nice little bonus for me. If you can follow those rules I'll be more than happy to acquiesce to your request." The boys in unison titled their heads to the side to show their confusion. Al'asard sat before he realized his mistake.
"This lesson's free. Acquiesce, to agree or comply. Usually in a reluctant manner, which is true in this case." With that Al'asard's short-lived career as a tutor began. He met with the boy's an hour before dark and they would huddle about his "podium" prompting him with questions and asking for pronunciations of words. Al' in return was treated to four free rounds of drinks before he was forced to dip into his own funds.
