Rolling hacklung check. Current threshold 10. HdJPyRFo 71, success.
One of the final crafting arenas Tyr had left to face was that of potion making. Due to the nature of the materials required it was something that had very few masters, even less which had been accessible during Tyr's apprentice years. He had only managed to learn some basic alchemy from a wandering tradesman, but no one was able to acquire the ingredients for him to practice any further. Turns out fire salts, vampire blood, and pixie dust were all nearly unheard of in most markets. Who knew right?
But memory served of an old library hidden in the ruins of the castle. The area had been recently fortified and adventuring through it found plenty of dusty old tomes. Most were heavily deteriorated in one form or another, but one had stood out. An old book on herbs, faded but still mostly intact. He was pouring over the old writing by candlelight in the Artificery, trying to match the rough sketches and vague descriptions to the plants his land kept producing.
Learning the uses of plants. Simple (30) + K (100) + Herb (0) = Threshold 130. Learning Gladeria, Helixan, Foxberry, Star Mint and Poisonberry. Autosuccesses.
The process was much slower than it had been with Lord's Glove. If only Na'ka was here to just tell him what everything did. The tasting process wasn't highly advised with some of these either, if Foxberry and Poisonberry were correct it was highly likely to kill him in the process. He burned through a few candles scribbling notes on new pages of paper, doing his best to preserve the knowledge before it crumbled to dust completely.

Rolling hacklung check. Current theshold 20. o8PHba5a 91, success.
With most of the book copied over Tyr only had three plants left to match up to their descriptions. He worked quickly but carefully, poring over the scribbled pages with excitement. The way these things went on he could manage a number of wondrous things with these plants. Elixirs to heal, gases to paralyze. There were of course references to the greater effects of alchemical ingredients, but right now he was limited to the plants his lands grew in abundance.
Learning the uses of plants. Simple (30) + K (100) + Herb (0) = Threshold 130. Learning Drakehazel, Tel'Sara, and Dremora
With the final pieces in place, Tyr closed the old tome and checked his own notes. They were relatively clear, and gave him ideas to start with. It was just a quick jaunt down the main road to his Artificery, and from there he entered the mostly unused laboratory. It was a separate room built into one side of the building, and was covered in a light layer of dust and soot from lack of use. A few minutes of cleaning later and Tyr had some plants ready to go in the interest of making his first potion. He fetched a cauldron of water from the river outside and set to grinding down some gladeria into powder, before mixing it together in the lab set.
Making a potion! Using river water and 2 gladeria. Normal (0) + K (100) + Herb0/AlchI (5) + Lab (5) = Threshold 110. Autosuccess. Herbalist I earned!
Taking a sip of the resulting concoction sent a wave of energy throughout Tyr's body. He felt revitalized, ready to take on a salamander herd. There was enough mixture left over for an entire second potion, so Tyr poured it into the glass bottle on his belt for later use. Maybe it would come in handy.

Rolling hacklung check, current threshold 30. _YDE3hBc 5, failure. Vitality roll is an automatic success.
The coughing fit seized him without warning, racking his body with violent spasms and coloring his sleeve with red flecks. Tyr caught the edge of a table for support and started to double over, barely able to breathe in enough to stay standing. His vision swam as the fit continued, and black spots appeared as lack of oxygen slowly took hold. And then it was gone, passing as suddenly as it had come on. He wiped his mouth, and reoriented himself to the laboratory equipment. What had just happened followed the reports of what was happening all over his duchy. It explained a lot about the recent deaths in his land.
Some time passed in study, and while he was preparing another mixture Kilinger walked into the lab. He had a sense of urgency in his step, and carried an opened letter. Tyr trusted his cousin in almost all matters, reading a letter wasn't a problem. His reaction though, that was new. Tyr looked up from his plants and studied his cousin's expression. There was concern there, and a mountain of stress. Tyr set some powder into a boiling flask, then stood to greet Kilinger.
Brewing a potion. Lord's Glove plus river water. Normal (0) + K (100) + HerbI/AlchI/Chem0 (10) + Lab (5) = Threshold 115. Autosuccess.
"Welcome cousin, what troubles you?" The pair shared a brief hug before Kilinger passed the note across and moved to inspect the bubbling brew.
"The Countess Allenmorde sends word of plague. The same that seems to be affecting our duchy." Tyr read through the letter as Kilinger spoke, a furrow spreading across his brow. It was good he was working with the potions now, but his knowledge as of yet was insufficient to provide any significant aid. He was waiting for the question, and wouldn't have to wait much longer. "What can we do about it?"
Tyr sighed and checked the potion. It was about finished, so he poured the result in a mug and offered it to Kilinger. Without question the lordling gulped it down, feeling no different for it but slightly less parched. Kilinger raised an eyebrow and Tyr gestured at the mug.
"I can do that, for now. I know too little to be of much help, but I'm working on it." He set up again for another potion attempt, at the same time retrieving one of the vats for papermaking. He still needed practice with that process, and since he now needed to write a reply to Allyria why not make good use of his downtime?
Making paper, one reed one straw. Simple (30) + K (100) + PaperI (5) = DC 135. Autosuccess. Papercrafting II earned! Also making another potion. 2 Helixan plus river water. Normal (0) + K (100) + Herb1/Alch1/Tox0 (10) + Lab (5) = Threshold 115. Autosuccess.
When the potion finished Tyr split it into cups for Kilinger and himself. The stimulant fought off the worst of their fatigue, coughing throughout the night keeping them from properly sleeping. Kilinger watched the proceedings while trying to wrap his head around the problem, Tyr separated the paper from the vat and started formulating a letter in his head.

Rolling for hacklung. Threshold 10. 5QHihq3w 33, success.
As Tyr worked Kilinger rifled through the workshop. He was waiting for Tyr to write his response, and would take it to a courier for his liege. The Duke prepared some plants for practice mixtures, nothing really worth keeping over the healing potion he had bottled, setting up batches for rapid mixtures. Process was more important than product here, if he could get a reliable understanding of how things combined he could deviate with higher probability of success. The mindless work helped him organize his thoughts, and words came together for a reply to Allyria.
Writing a letter. High Cruic II/Lit II (20) + K (100) = 120. Autosuccess.
While writing Kilinger came back with a few leather bound collections of paper. Tyr's earliest attempt at expanding the knowledge of his people, tomes of knowledge for people to learn and read from. Kilinger was thumbing through one titled "Principles of Leadership". His first work, and a good thing for the budding general to pick up.
Retroactive roll for writing a Leadership Codex. High Cruic II/Lit II (20) + K (100) = 120. Autosuccess. Roll for Kilinger learning from said Codex. Normal (0) + LitI/High CruI (10) + K (30) = 40. 68, failure.
After finishing his writing Tyr sealed the letter in an envelope and passed it to his cousin for sending out. Kilinger pocketed it while still reading the manual, content to get around to it whenever. The manual wasn't sinking in very well, and he would need more time to learn the lessons contained within. Tyr wasn't in a hurry with the delivery or he'd have asked for it to be done immediately. Or just delivered it himself, that was also an option. The Duke however had other plans, namely the potions he'd already prepared. The mixture were created, effect observed, and then dumped out a window to suffuse into the dirt. He had no purpose for a poison, antidote, and second dose of the stimulant he was already on. Nor did he feel like testing the efficacy of said poison and antidote on his cousin right now. He may be scientific, but he wasn't that cruel.
Making various potions. Lord's Glove + River Water. (Herb/Alch/Tox) Poisonberry + River Water. (Herb/Alch/Tox) Helixan + River Water. (Herb/Alch/Chem) All are automatic successes. Earned Alchemy II and Herbalist II! ·

Rolling for hacklung. Threshold 20. XngEhmdL 2, failure. Autorecover. Rolling for Kilinger's hacklung. Threshold 10. 55, success.
"Power of presence? You think people really feel some sort of force based on you being there?" Kilinger was still going through that book trying to take it in. As Tyr prepared his next batch of potions he mulled over the question for an appropriate response not already covered in the book. Leadership was a tricky thing, as much done by instinct as it was by defined actions. Charisma wasn't a quantifiable thing normally, only one that could be felt and guessed at.
He almost had an answer out when a series of hacking coughs nearly ripped the lungs from his body. Flecks of blood dotted the worktable and Tyr gripped the wooden arms of his chair tight enough to splinter them. Kilinger waited it out. Experience already taught him there was nothing he could do to help. Eventually Tyr recovered and got his thoughts back in order.
"If I sent my army out to fight a battle, they would do so out of loyalty. They would fight, and some might die, with all the effort they could muster. Were I to join them however..." Tyr offered one hand out for Kilinger to finish the example, to let the words sink in. At the same time he poured the various batches of powder into their respective pots. One was the same stimulant, that would be incredibly useful in large batches and working out the kinks to it now would be best, one a paralytic that could be useful for trapping some animals, and the last more antidote for similar reasons to the first.
Roll for Kilinger learning from said Codex, with assistance from Tyr. Normal (0) + LitI/High CruI (10) + K (30)+ Tyr's Assistance (20) = 60. 73, failure. Making practice potion batches. Autosuccesses. River/Helix (Skillful), River/Fox (Skillful), and River/Glove (Skillful).
"You could potentially fight and die right along with them?" He wasn't getting it. He understood the idea of leading from the front, sure, it rallied the people behind you. But it just...didn't have this power Tyr seemed to think it did. What would that do, cause the men to have some special strength behind their sword blows?
"Actually yes. And they would probably respond to that, no? Fight harder to defend a lord that chooses to bear his part of the burden? One that doesn't expect more from them than he is willing to do?"
One more try for Kilinger, with further assistance. Normal (0) + LitI/High CruI (10) + K (30)+ Tyr's Assistance (20) = 60. 1, success.
It finally started to sink in for ol' Kilinger, how to use one's presence as an effective tool in more ways than just the physical. He nodded to Tyr's words and thumbed through more of the book, absorbing the words. Tyr was a decent instructor when it came down to it, Kilinger just had to be open to learning the lesson.

Hacklung threshold 10. hCUQOtVW13, success. Kilinger hacklung threshold 20. 45, success. Roll for the retroactive creation of an Alliance I Codex. Hard (-15) + High Cruic II/Lit II (20) + K (100) = 105. Autosuccess.
After reading through the first tome and learning all he could, Kilinger sat a while with the next in the stack he'd brought over. This one covered useful tips on how to bring people together for more than just a short task. Alliances, and all the intricacies involved therein. Tyr took an odd satisfaction from someone actually reading his scribbles, especially since the person was able to learn from them. It helped of course that he got along with his cousin quite well. As Kilinger read Tyr would continue his experiments in peace. First a batch of paper to help replace what he'd spent writing those books in the first place.
Second he thought he would focus on the deadlier aspect of these potions. This damnable hacklung was ripping him apart, if he could just learn how the potions inflicted harm he might find a better way to stop it. With that understanding it should be an easier transition from curing poisons to curing this disease. Of course it may do absolutely nothing to help him figure it out, but why not try?
Making a batch of paper. 10 reeds, 10 straw. Autosuccess. Making potions. Lord's Glove + River Water. (Herb/Alch/Tox) (x2) Poisonberry + River Water. (Herb/Alch/Tox) Potions are automatic successes. Tyr earns Alchemy III and Herbalist III!
As the products came rolling out Kilinger started his questions. Why alliances couldn't be viewed as short term, why finding common ground was such a crucial first step, why this, why that. From an academic level it was astounding how quickly he got to the heart of matters, but it also left Tyr grasping for answers not already contained within the pages.
Roll for Kilinger learning from Alliance Codex with assistance from Tyr. Normal (0) + LitI/High CruI (10) + K (30)+ Tyr's Assistance (20) = 60. 72, failure.
"A working relationship is nice, but I don't see the benefit of cementing it into a formal thing like this. What do you really get from it? People will work for the coin you offer one way or another." He wasn't getting it, that much was clear. How to clarify? How do you describe that basic desire to have people you can count on for reasons other than their base desire for money?
"Why do you continue to serve under me? Why don't you take your house, and your land, and claim your own title? Count Mardocay, instead of Kilinger cousin of Tyr?" It gave him something to chew on, and a more personal aspect to take into consideration.
One more time for Kilinger. Normal (0) + LitI/High CruI (10) + K (30)+ Tyr's Assistance (20) = 60. 44, success! Kilinger learns Alliance I!
"The bond that gets built, the trust that runs deeper than convenience. I understand."···

Hacklung threshold 20. G1G9QRPh76, success. Kilinger hacklung threshold 30. 38, success.
With two tomes out of the way, and a significant number of experiments concluded, the two called it a day. Research had burned up a significant portion of the morning, initial experiments and Kilinger's teachings the afternoon. With the rampant hacklung around they both knew sleep was of the utmost importance. When else might they have some slight respite to recover from the day's shredding of their insides? Granted even then it was difficult to ignore the constant desire to cough, but the healing potions Tyr had made at least assisted in soothing their pain enough to eventually pass out.
The next day things resumed from where they left off. Kilinger brought a few other codices to study, and Tyr prepared for a day of working with fluids. Papermaking was in order, Kilinger's success at learning from the reference books meant more would need to be written. More books meant a lot more paper to be used, so his task was clear. Batches would be created while the potion experiments brewed, all the while the instructions would continue. Of course Kilinger decided to pick quite the interesting first choice, the Sissak Codex Tyr had earned.
Making paper. 20 reeds, 20 straw. Autosuccess with skillful crafting. Making potions. River water + Lord's Glove, skillfully. Four times. (Unless hacklung succeeds, in which case five.) Automatically successful. Tyr learns Toxicology I! Rolling for Kilinger to understand the Sissak Codex with assistance from Tyr. Normal (0) + LitI/High CruI (10) + K (30)+ Tyr's Assistance (20) = 60. 29, success. Kilinger learns Sissak I!
After poring over the pages a good while, Kilinger experimented with some grunts and hand motions. The basic concept of words, which Tyr picked up on and expanded into phrases for him. After a half hour of back and forth 'chatter', the two were speaking in short sentences with decent grammar. Their accents were probably horrendous, and the lack of a tail made things all sorts of strange, but it was still decent communication. Interestingly they both realized it was also probably fairly secretive. A scant few non-Skaldi could understand the language for all they knew, least of all anyone in the Kingdom. It would be perfect for any side conversations they needed to have in the open. ··

Hacklung threshold 30. Edw2k4_O 9, fail. Autorecover. Kilinger threshold 40. 26, fail. Rolling vit to recover, threshold 25. 38, failure.
The conversations drifted between languages at that point, seeming to alternate between Sissak and Cruic. It was strange having someone else constantly around to explore the language with, as much as Tyr engaged with Jorkahn the lad was often gone performing his tasks. A dedicated Ritgr to be sure, but not having his friends around meant loneliness and self-occupation. Kilinger was filling the void nicely now. Tyr prepared several more batches of potential poisons, trying to master the more lethal arts, while getting another stack of straw and reeds ready for the boiling process. Honestly he needed to get something up and running that could do this for him. Employ some of his people to create paper all day, it would be a wonderful export for the rest of the country.
Might even help finance some of the more...ambitious projects he had in mind.
Kilinger by this point was busying himself reading various non-intellectual things Tyr had written down. Ideas for future buildings, a couple actual designs. The biggest thing though was a roughly drawn map, with a scale he was only just starting to comprehend. It had waterworks built through it, new and special structures all throughout. It was a giant ring with a castle near the center of it...it was a huge version of Mardok. Almost the size of Sorath.
"You're going to turn Mardok into a city?" Kilinger looked at his cousin incredulously, almost stumped by the level of ambition. Where would they get the people to build everything? The money? The resources? "How? We would have to cut down miles of the Mallon to even get started!" His shock caught him hard and he started coughing immediately, the hacklung ripping him apart from inside. Almost on sympathy reflex Tyr joined in the fit, but recovered much faster and with less blood frothing between his teeth. It irked him that the potions he could make did nothing but provide temporary relief. There was no cure to be found here and he knew it, yet still he practiced. In fact, Kilinger didn't actually seem to be recovering at all. Tyr capped off his experiments and went over to his cousin, trying to help him breath any better.
Making paper. 25 reeds, 25 straw, with skillful crafting. Automatic success. Making potions. River water + Poisonberry. x3 Automatic success. Alchemy and Herbalism mastery earned!

Tyr hacklung 10. Ah5WsXGV 69, success. Kilinger recover 25. 39, failure.
Kilinger's coughing didn't seem to be getting any better, and Tyr started to fret over his cousin's well-being. While he could mix a potion to heal his cousin's lungs, unless the coughing subsided Kilinger would only choke on it. The Duke helped the other man to the back room of the Artificery, Tyr's home away from home, and laid Kilinger on his bed. He tended to him for a while, but eventually realized there was absolutely nothing he could do. Kilinger would cough until his lungs had decided enough was enough. All he could do was soldier on with his experiments, hopefully finding some spark of genius that fixed everything. Unlikely, but such was life right now. Plenty of other people had already succumbed to the disease, Kilinger was only human. Such a thought was harsh however, and Tyr pushed it from his mind. Life was cold, no need to emulate it.
Another batch of paper was readied as Tyr put more ground down flower dust into water for potions. He worked over the latest round of city planning while occasionally popping in on Kilinger during the worst parts of the fit. Tyr wiped away blood, patted his back with careful force, and otherwise held him up as the racking coughs continued. Seeing Kilinger in such a state made him worry for his mother and siblings in the castle, but the attendants there would care for them similarly. Well, as long as they weren't hacking up their own lungs already.
Making paper. 20 straw, 20 reeds, done skillfully. Autosuccess. Making potions. Foxberry + River Water, skillfully done, x4. Toxicology II earned.
As he pulled the dried paper from each frame, Tyr slowly mulled over his plans with his ill cousin. Various districts of the newly minted city of Mardok, the buildings he intended to have produced. A paper mill, a steel refinery, an entire district dedicated to crafting just about anything in rapid order. He talked about the Academy being produced, and the knowledge it would spread amongst the citizenry. He talked about the future, mostly as a way to force himself to believe Kilinger would be there to see it.

Hacklung threshold 20. eBvO3njd 31, success. Kilinger recover 25. 59, failure.
The day passed slowly, with Tyr constantly checking in on Kilinger. There were low points to the coughing throughout the day, but it never truly seemed to stop. Sometimes blood frothed at the edge of the Myrmidon's lips, other times it was an empty rasping that echoed through the empty workshop. Tyr tried his best to keep the worry from his mind, to know that Kilinger would get through the fit eventually and live, but every ten to twenty minutes he was pulled back to the room to make sure his cousin wasn't drowning in his own blood.
Between anxiety fits however Tyr worked more on his advancing scientific understanding. His ability to make paper was solidifying, and handling the frames to make proper sheets was becoming easier each time he went through the process. He guessed it to be a handful more batches before he had enough of an intuitive understanding to start teaching others. At that point he could get a mill into operation and never have to make paper himself again. Paper aside his potions experience was also pretty far along. The general 'how to' portion was easy now, turning ingredients to powder and mixing them together was nearly second nature. It was the understanding of what it would do, how it would affect someone, and proper handling of dangerous ingredients that he was getting down. Not eating the plants was of course pretty obvious, but knowing whether the juice could seep through his skin to paralyze him wasn't quite so.
Skillfully making paper, 20 reeds 20 straw. Autosuccess. Papermaking III earned. Skillfully making poisons. River water + Foxberry. (x4) Toxicology III earned.
A series of paralyzing potions were made and tossed out, Tyr having no direct use for them. At one point he wondered if maybe paralyzing Kilinger momentarily would stop his lungs from seizing up, but that delirious hope was overruled by the understanding that it would also stop him from breathing. While true he could literally whip up an antidote at a moment's notice, it wouldn't help anything. If the paralysis hit at the wrong time Kilinger could be bleeding into his lungs and drown before the antidote took effect. As such the day ended on a low note. Kilinger was able to rest some and heal from the effects of th coughing, but when the sun broke above the horizon the fit continued on as if nothing had changed.

Hacklung threshold 30. 8jQpQhAg28, fail. Autorecover. Kilinger recovery threshold 25. 81, failure.
As the new day dawned Tyr was in the workshop trying out an idea sparked by a dream. Kilinger wasn't recovering very well on his own, and without any intervention would die from the blood loss. Tyr could make reliably make rather spectacular healing potions now, but as long as Kilinger was suffering a fit he wouldn't be able to drink them. What was needed was a way of getting the potion into the body without needing to drink it. Tyr could probably pour it into an open wound, that would get it into the bloodstream reliably enough, but hacklung didn't provide any of those. If he could make it into a readily absorbed paste that would also work, but not every potion would likely take to such a thing.
No, he was going to make an injector. Tyr refined several ingots of steel and got to work. First he crafted another spring, following the design from before, making sure it was nice and compact for his plans. Next came the tricky work of making a needle. Using a sliver of metal, Tyr wrapped a thin plate around it and sharpened the end. It would create the smallest entry wound he could manage, and the potion would heal it up right after. The rest of the plate was formed into a cylinder. The work was careful and tricky, and left Tyr with a device of unique function. It would accept a smaller metal cylinder inside, one meant to have a sliding plate inside. Filled with a liquid, when a small latch was tripped the spring would shove the plate out and push the potion inside someone. Following that three vials were created as test cases.
Refine skill to create 5 steel. 1 steel for the spring. 1 steel for the injector. 3 steel for vials. Each crafting, even with a difficult check, is an automatic success. Vials created as a batch for roll conservation.
Almost on cue to his starting work a fit gripped him, the hacking coughs bending him over a few moments. The taste of blood filled his mouth but he recovered without much further damage. Feeling the pain, Tyr quickly moved to the lab and mixed up some gladeria potion. His first test case would be himself, Kilinger could be cared for when everything was worked out.
Mixing 18 Gladeria with 3 river water. Filled three injector vials. Healing Injection: +100 HP.
Vials ready, Tyr set one into the injector and held it above his leg. Nerves gripped him, his knowledge of the human body and how it worked was...rather limited at best. What he was about to do could very well kill him. The weight of such a moment took hold for a minute or two until Kilinger's coughing was loud enough to be heard throughout the Artificery. There was a reason he needed to take this risk, and his cousin's pain steeled his nerves. He pushed the injector in, ignoring the pain, and tripped the latch. The spring fought the resistance of the fluid, flooding Tyr's body with high powered healing potion. He pulled the injector free and watched the hole close up immediately, feeling the effects of the potion course through his body. Relatively convinced the invention worked, Tyr reset the device and wiped it as clean as he could. He proceeded to inject his cousin once, and himself a second time. All vials spent the pair were recovered from their fits, but Kilinger was still coughing. That cure needed to be found, and quickly.·
