Tyr's campaign of expansion had finally come to an end. He controlled one corner of the country, and his borders were relatively defensible. The Darthaks provided good cover to the north and west, the Mallon River to the east. His southern border was the interesting part, with one of his counties protruding south into the Mallon forest as it was, but unless he wanted to conquer all the way to the Western Lake there wasn't much to be done about that. With the first part of his plans complete for the moment, the Duke had decided it was about time to start on step two.
Development.
A great many plans swirled around inside his head, grand buildings and public works that would rival the great cities. Indeed he planned to visit those cities to get an idea of how to make something even better than what already existed. For now though he needed an idea of what his land could provide. To that end he was out and about picking at plants, hacking at trees, and mining at stones. Gathering various pieces of this and that to see what was available, and where. Plants were first as his trip started in the forest above his duchy's main city. He gathered mostly the plants of the region, aiming for the hardiest and most plentiful. With the war shaping up as it was he had to be prepared to feed his people without any outside assistance. It was likely they would be under siege eventually, and a lack of food was often what ended those.

The first round of gathered food was a mix of fruits and vegetables, with some seasoning in there for good measure. Tyr munched on some of the various items as he walked the land, supplementing his packed rations with the fresh produce. It was good to see such things growing well in the wild, it would make starting additional farms a bit easier with seed crops so plentiful. Plants were just one step to things however, and even if the wilds weren't producing much natural food farms could be started just fine in anywhere but Innorsford it seemed. No, what Tyr needed were materials and lots of them. That was why he started to travel north, over the river and through the woods towards the Darthaks. There he would join the miners briefly before setting off along the range towards the western edge of his lands.
For now it was a series of long walks, with breaks every now and again to hunt up a snack. He'd sleep in his tent at night, then forage for something in the morning for breakfast. All in all not a bad traveling arrangement, if a bit slow. Seeing the land, and the various conditions the plants were growing in, was at least minorly educational in how the various circumstances altered growth. There were worse ways to learn.

Vegetable soup was quickly becoming the order of the day. The apples were a good travel snack until Tyr camped out for the night, at which point a packed pot and some water boiled his prior finds together into a hardy stock. It wasn't the greatest of culinary creations, but it would feed him for the night. If the weather held, and his travels weren't delayed, his circuitous route would take him to the current mines in only a few days. That left plenty of time to finish his agricultural surveying. Camping out was also proving to be an interesting challenge. His basic knowledge of things was expansive, but his actual practice with them was entirely different. Building forge fires was something else entirely from starting cooking fires out in the wilderness. After the soup was ready Tyr boiled the eggs for the road, waste not want not.
The night passed and Tyr packed up in the early light of dawn. It was another long day of walking and picking up various foodstuffs, and Tyr had taken to scribbling notes down along the way. All the concepts of improved agricultural methods were starting to sink into what he'd already done with the farms back home, and he was now brimming with ideas to try. Various kinds of fertilized soil, constructing small structures to artificially control the light level to different plants. That kind of thing.

The prevalence of chicken eggs was actually quite interesting, Tyr didn't think he'd find too many of those outside of an established farm. To see the birds doing quite well in the wild suggested they were likely a hardier breed. Capturing some of them could make for a good experiment in breeding. It also made him wonder what else was out here that could be used. On an extreme end, why not salamanders? With sufficient arms and armor the beasts could be handled relatively well, and surely they could be trained to a degree. Given a stock to start with, maybe they could be farmed? It would make for a good supply of meat, bones, and scales to work with.
The mountains were starting to be clearly visible as the trek went on, Tyr would arrive within a day or two. Until then it was more gathering of plants and eggs, and building up those ideas. If he could successfully increase the agricultural output of his land then the people would be well fed indeed. That would increase their overall health, and with plentiful food also came plentiful babies. It would take decades to have a dramatic effect, but with the work done the proud nation of Cruinthe would once again be a bustling hive of human activity. Along with activity from the other races living within the borders of course, Tyr was no national purist.

His final soup was an experimental use of the cinnamon he found along with all the remaining veggies. To be fair it added a bit of a kick to the concoction, but overall it probably would've been just as good without. Now some of those leeks might have been a great addition, but sadly they were not to be found this time around. After dinner Tyr watched the stars dance across the sky with the world's rings for a while before finally drifting off to sleep near the remnants of his campfire.
The next day was the last leg of his immediate travels, and the last of his food gathering attempts. After some time the path to the mines came into view and Tyr met with the miners in his employ working there. He shared his finds with them, not needing any additional rations now. Many were confused by the offering, but also amused by the chance to share a snack with their liege lord.

After munching on some grindage Tyr wandered the mines a while to get used to the concept put in action. He had some ideas for another type of mine, one with a more specialized purpose. To that end however he would need some more experience in the areas of industrial work, and what better way than to get swinging? Borrowing a pick from the stores Tyr joined his people in the tunnels, chipping away at the stones to find what lay buried deep.

The tin and copper from the mine would make for good bronze, or could be used on their own for lamps and such. It was good to see his main mine producing so well, hopefully the rest would be just as productive. Still, Tyr continued to pound the rock with the metal pick, drawing out the wealth of the mountain. Metal was one thing, he also needed to try and find out how good the stone coming from this place was. There were plenty of buildings he had in mind that would need a solid stone foundation to build upon, and if the rock was weak and prone to chipping it would be useless for his purposes.
As he worked Tyr got to know several of the miners and their take on working here. Interestingly most seemed relatively fine with the work, it was a solid living after all, but there were several complaints about the distance from the city. The miners rarely had a chance to see their families, living in shelters constructed near the mine to avoid constantly taking the long trip. As it was they took turns on the carts bringing the ore back to town, spending the night at home then heading back. He would have to look into a way to speed up the process. There weren't enough horses in the Duchy to manage the constant trips, nor would that be overly feasible.

Finding a Cordite vein was impossibly lucky, and Tyr made sure to add that to the cart heading back to town. Cordite was rapidly becoming an addition to almost everything he made, and the hydrillium that came along with it would be useful for mass producing stronger armor for his soldiers. All in all a good find, but Tyr needed to move on from the mine. If he was to truly survey the land, he had to move about it and find new places. Gathering supplies from the store before he went, the Duke set off along the edge of the Darthaks to find new places to smash rocks.
The survey process was a relatively easy one. Every hour or so Tyr would mark on a rough map where he was, then spend some time mining away at a stone. He wasn't looking for anything in particular, just getting an idea as to what was common where. Truthfully he was hoping to find a gemstone, any kind of gemstone, but that was so unlikely as to be impossible. At least he thought so, he hadn't heard of it happening. They came from somewhere though, and he was determined to find out where. When the sun peaked in the sky he ate lunch, and when it fell he made camp. All in all he had traveled a handful of miles west, and would only continue on in the next few days.

And I dig dig dig dig dig dig dig outside the whole day through...
Each day was another small adventure, although he was pretty lucky not to have run into any dangerous critters on his travels. A couple salamanders wouldn't be an issue, but there were bigger things out here that could be a challenge. Especially if he went any farther north into the Darthaks. There were stories passed down through the generations about the things that could be found up there. Giant beasts of snow and ice, flying creatures that could paralyze you with a scream. Those would be tricky to handle alone, so out of the cold he stayed.
After a day or two the mountainside started to all blur into one giant collection of rocks. Which, to be fair, it was, but it was making keeping things straight a bit harder. The map he'd started was the only thing keeping him on course until the sun started to dip. It took him a while to notice, while he was mining out some rocks it was no longer on his right. It was technically over the mountain in front of him. He'd gone several miles farther than he though, being somewhere in the river valley west of the mine. While the surveying continued, he could only guess the markings now until he reached the source of the river to get an accurate landmark.

Every spot of rock seemed to look the same until the river came into view. It was a landmark he could clearly recognize, and provided him with at least a small idea of where he was. Memories came rushing back of exploring the hills with Jorkahn, finding the old Saurian who would eventually give him the Codex. His ribs twinged a bit with the memory of the trap, but he otherwise continued on just fine. Maybe when he reached the point where the river met the mountain he could turn around, but until then nothing for it except soldiering on.
The last stretch of surveying was rough on the body, he'd burned through most of his final provisions in the last day or so and without gathering more was running on fumes. The heat beat down on him, and getting to the river started to look more attractive every minute. Hiking took the priority over mining, and by mid afternoon he was standing at the riverbank. Fresh water took the edge off the day's weather and revitalized the spirit. Walking along the east side of the river, Tyr took some final geological samples before resting a while. While enlightening in some aspects, this whole journey hadn't found him the location he was looking for. Maybe he needed a more pointed approach, an in depth look at one place rather than a surface analysis of a wide area?

Autosuccess roll, gathering wood. Gathered 4 oak. Using 4 oak to shore up the walls of a tunnel he's actively mining to avoid a cave in. Difficult (-30) + K (100) + Dev2/CarpM(30) = Threshold 100. Successful tunnel reinforcing.
Tyr focused around where the river met the mountain, hacking away at the stone with his borrowed pick. He was starting to make the beginnings of a tunnel, using local timbers to shore up the walls. The whole thing was roughly constructed, enough to stop it from falling in on him as he dug in. The limited wood gathering would prevent him from going too far, but depth wasn't what he needed. Any evidence of gem veins, geode formation, something like that was what he needed.
Mining for a gem vein. Difficult (-30) + K (100) + Gather2/IndM (30) = Threshold 100. Autosuccess.
After a couple hours he found it. A final strike of the pickaxe caused a loud fracturing sound and the rock in front of him splintered away. There, amidst the cracks of the shifting stones, was a glimmering dust. He couldn't tell what kind it was right away, but he knew it wasn't the remains of any of the hydrillium crystals. It shone with an opalescent quality, and that let him know he had found the right spot. Continued mining would be ill advised, he was as likely to cause a cave in as he was actually harvest anything useful. Plus he'd need gem cutters and the like to take care of the rough stones before using them.
Packing it in, Tyr began the long trek back home. He had done it though, and such a find was going to benefit his people for a long time.
