Kell trudged up to the base of the foothills, it was evident even here that this was a dark place. If what he'd heard was correct then this was likely the cause of all the darkness in this region and possibly the origin point of the crows that seemed to keep haunting him, even if it wasn't it was still a problem that needed to be addressed for less personal reasons. Demons came from this point, if he could find a way to prevent them coming through then that would be useful, if not then he was simply here to cull their numbers for the time being to reduce the threat that they posed. While his own lands were far enough away that he wasn't likely to be bothered by them currently they could be a threat to travellers and those living closer and that he could not allow. Plus what reason was really needed to purge the world of some demons.
Even from where he was he could feel the dark energies coming from the hills, whether it came from the centre or grew the further up one went he was unsure, but however it worked it definitely seemed potent. It was definitely beyond his own capacity for power, and if he could maybe analyse and discover how the hells had been attracted so close that dark energy was so abundant then would it not be possible to duplicate the effect with more neutral energy. It would require far more wellspring energy and power than he possessed but theoretically to his brain at least it seemed possible.
That was not the primary point of the excursion, he could research that point at a later date, for now his primary objective was to cull the demons living around the foothills. Kell unsheathed his warhammer and moved himself onto the foothills proper.

Ascent One Rocky Landscape: 1D100 => 83. Kell does not slide down the mountain side. Though he finds the mountain ahead of him, his first ascent is a nearly sheer rock face covered in gravel that is ready to slide out from under him in a moments notice. If that were to happen, he would either fall all the way down the mountain, or be buried under it. Around him, everywhere, there were rocks of various shapes and sizes. Everything looked to be a part of the landscape despite the odd feeling he would have from the mountains hellish energies. It was strangely bright out here on the mountain, despite the hour.
To progress up the mountain you must make a hard climbing check this round. You must rull a 5 or lower. (-10, Rocky Landscape. -15 Hard. +30 Kell's Strength.)

It seemed that a demonic foothill didn't need paths, or at least it appeared so. This one had a distinct lack of paths, instead all it had was a nearly sheer cliff side that didn't seem particularly stable, it seemed more loose rock than an actual mountain and as if it would move as such. Unfortunately it also seemed to be the only way up, so in this case however difficult it may be it was in fact the only option for him to take.
Kell slung his hammer through a strap on his belt and reached out a hand to grab some of the gravel, it came away in his hands easily, this mountain really wasn't going to be all that easy to climb, presuming he was capable of it at all. He was in no way a climber, in fact he'd very rarely had any reason to climb anything in his life other than some stairs or a stool to reach something higher up. In short this was definitely going to be interesting, maybe not for him, but for anyone or anything watching it could be.

As Kell attempts to gain a handhold, the grave loosens further and comes sliding down, releasing more gravel ahead of him until he was covered waist deep in the stuff. He would have to dig himself out to progress further, though the landslide had managed to create a furrow in the mountain cliff that would be easier to climb up if he could get his feet under him.

Kell barely made it off of the floor before things went wrong. One hand was grasped firmly into the gravel and the other not so much, so when his feet left the floor they very quickly were returned. The climbing didn't go very smoothly, in fact instead of climbing up the gravel rise as he'd been hoping to do, instead as he'd climbed up the whole gravel wall had come crashing down upon him and half burying him.
It was as if the sky fell down on him and Kell lifted his arms to protect his head, hoping that the armour he was wearing would absorb the majority of the impact. When the hail of stones stopped Kell found himself buried to his waist in the loosened gravel and a gap in the ascent where it had come from. It was lucky the noise hadn't attracted anything residing on the mountain, in his current state he'd be hard pressed to defend himself, given that his hammer was half buried and his mobility severely reduced. To begin with he needed to get out of the hole.

It took him a moment of struggling but he did manage to pull himself out of the gravel he was half buried in and be stood upon it once again. Once he was it took him only a moment to take stock of himself, luckily he was uninjured, just a few bruises from the rain of gravel on him. His motivation had taken no such bruising and he was still ready to go up the mountainside, he needed to make it up there and see if he could at minimum cull the demons coming down.

It was a good thing his motivation had taken no bruising, despite the other small injuries he had attained from the falling gravel. The young half-breed was lucky. And he continued to push his luck. The mountainside would give way again, but this time not so much that he had no progress. Instead as the gravel he attempted to climb gave way, more pooled under him. This gave him a higher base to work with, and several jagged yet firm rocks jutted out of from under the gravel that seemed to cover this lower portion of the mountain. If he took advantage of these freshly appearing features, he should have a normal time climbing.

Once again he set out to conquer the mountain...and was deposited back where he started near enough, on slightly higher footing than when he'd last been here due to all of the gravel that he was dislodging in his botched attempts. The thought came quite quickly that maybe if he just kept struggling to climb this one section maybe after enough time he'd eventually pull down all the gravel on the cliff, that or die.
Shaking his head at the poor humour Kell reexamined the situation, noting the now more exposed rocks that were protruding from the gravel mess, they seemed to be wedged in there quite deeply and maybe he could use them to pull himself up and have an easier time rather than scrabbling up a sheer gravel slope. There seemed no time like the present and so Kell grabbed the lowest of the extended rocks and attempted to begin using them to pull himself up.

Try, try and try again. And when you consistently failed, try once again. That seemed to be all that he could do currently, while he may not have always been the most physical of people, usually given to more magical and scholarly pursuits, he'd not realised that his physical abilities were at this level. Why he was finding it so difficult to climb the side of the mountain now he wasn't too sure, there were even exposed handholds for him and everything now, before it was understandable as he was climbing through gravel, but now...
Still, there was no way for him to continue onwards with his demonic culling and investigation of the dark presence in this area if he didn't first get up this cliff face. Hopefully once he was up there things would become much simpler, of course not taking into account the high chance that there were going to be tons of demons waiting at the top for him to fight. For Kell there was no point in worrying about the demons until he'd actually gotten up there where he could see and exterminate them, they were no danger to him currently nor did they even have an effect on him, it was simply his own less than pleasing physical abilities that prevented him currently.

Kell's less than stellar displays at strength were a combination of two things. He was over exerting himself, and the cliff had only just truly exposed itself. The gravel was a difficulty that he had overcome. Now it was just a manner of properly executing a climb by relying on his strength in the correct capacity. Throwing himself over and over at the cliff face would do nothing. He had found himself stalled on the side of the mountain, barely off the ground. Perhaps a different spot to approach from would make more sense? One with more handholds and sturdier footing?

It was a hell of a task before him, one that he was not at all suited for, if he'd thought ahead and brought some rope and climbing equipment this could have gone a lot easier, but he hadn't and now he was here struggling to climb up the side of a hill that shouldn't have been nearly as hard as it was turning out to be. Another possibility would of course have been earth magic, a kind that he had no experience in at all and so he couldn't utilise, that would make this entire process a lot easier as he could simply manipulate the rock to make his climb harder, alas it was not possible for him with his limited magical training beyond what he had learned and then practised himself. The thought of simply giving up for now and coming back at a later date did cross his mind, but he was here for a purpose and even if it was more difficult to do it now than simply come back later he would continue until he completed the task that he had set, if he left these mountains alone for much longer there was no telling what could possibly come out of them and into his lands, there had been far too many incidents as it was and he had no desire for more.
Kell sat cross legged on the floor and examined the cliff face as he rested, planning in his head the route before even setting foot anywhere near it. If he could familiarise himself with where he'd have to put each hand and foot before trying then he would be more prepared and have less to think about as he was actually climbing, he'd take some of the strain off of his mind and his body while it waited for his mind. While he sat he chewed half heartedly on some dried salamander flesh, it was unlikely that he'd have any time for sustenance once he got up into the fighting so he figured there was no harm in a little food.
Once the salamander was finished and washed down with some water Kell returned to the cliff face, placing his hands on the two lowest extended rocks and taking a deep breath before attempting to climb once again.

As he managed to clear the top of the climb, Kell would notice that a rocky landscape of dark volcanic stone was before him. His footing would not be sure going forward. Any walking he would try to do ran the risk of twisting an ankle on the apparent loose stones that made up this part of the face of the mountain. Any number of them could slide out from under him as he stepped upon it.
Not to mention that it was riddled with Skulvor, a demon that took on the appearance of a rock until it moved to strike. Deadly and voracious, they've been known to devour a grown man in a matter of hours.

Kell would peer across the rocky volcanic landscape before him, it was much the same as what he'd climbed up to get so far in that he wasn't that sure of it's integrity, one wrong step could find him twisting an ankle far easier than he would like. The whole way forward was riddled with loose stone that would move at the slightest provocation, it was a terrain he was incredibly unfamiliar with and would just have to try his best to traverse without injuring himself, it was times like this that he wished flight magic was an option, but if it was he had no knowledge of how to manage it.
Kell would peer across and begin looking for the way up further, he couldn't see any demons on this layer so it was likely they were to be further along or even further up the mountain, he was only on the very lowest tier of the foothills after all. It all looked roughly the same to him however, there was nothing particularly obvious around the whole place was just volcanic stone as far as he could see which lead him to some confusion, so far all he'd found up here was tainted wellspring energy surrounding him like a bad smell.
Observing the surrounding rocks carefully he would plan a route for a short distance, he'd have to take his utmost care walking and so take it a bit at a time and be careful with each movement.

Rocks Sliding!
Kell moves three feet to the southwest due to rocks sliding underfoot as he was walking. He in fact made near negative progress if one compared where he had arrived and where he ended up in practical terms. Luckily, the cliff was several dozen feet behind him still. Some of the rocks ahead of him seemed to move in a way that wasn't quite natural. But they all looked the same.
Perception Check: 8mAYu1U1 --Failed Kell failed to discern which rocks were moving unnaturally, just that some had done so.
