Business had been good for a while, but that wasn’t the end goal. No, Tyr had a different plan for his Artificery. He didn’t need money, the Duchy produced enough for him to never work again. It was the reputation he needed, the fact that people knew they could trust his creations and kept coming back for them. It allowed him to craft on a whim and have people tolerate his changes to the normal designs. It was but a stepping stone though, now it was time to start expanding into the realm of experimentation. To get to a point of creating whole new types of equipment, things no one was else was even thinking of attempting. Not only that, but with his reputation people would use them, and thus they would be field tested.
Not a whole lot of results would come back from that field testing, but if the person using it didn’t die that would give him something.
First was setup. The big problem he’d been having was properly fitting people. Everyone’s body worked differently, and matching equipment to them presented somewhat of a problem. How strong were they? How fluidly could they move? How well did they handle things? These things presented limitations that the smith had to match or the final pieces would ill suit their new owners. To that end Tyr was setting out to design certain markers. Consecutively heavier pieces to test an individual’s strength, various tools to test agility, and various other tests to get a measure of each customer that wandered into his shop.
The heavy ones would be first. These would just be a series of exceedingly shitty hammers really, blocks of metal with handles on them to be picked up and put down again. A thought struck him about how one could do a decent workout like that, but that was a project for another time.
Making a hammerweight with 1 iron. Simple (30) + IronM/WepII (30) + K (30) + Race (5) + Forge (5) = 100/Autosuccess. No masterwork check being performed. Hammerweight type 1: 10 Dam; Req 4 Str, 2 A, 2 K. +10 dam

With the proof of concept completed, Tyr moved right into forging the rest. Pure iron pieces would work fairly well for this project, but to get truly accurate in the measuring Tyr needed a wider range of things to work with. Good thing he had a bunch of materials at his disposal.
For now though, more iron!
Crafting hammerweight from 2 iron. Simple (30) + IronM/WepII (30) + K (30) + Race (5) + Forge (5) = 100/Autosuccess. No masterwork check being performed. Hammerweight type 2: 20 Dam; Req 8 Str, 4 A, 4 K.
He would also need somewhere to put these things, and a way of identifying which one was which. Probably should’ve thought about that in the first place. Maybe make a wooden stand with numbers carved into them? That would work pretty well until he reached the higher weights. Might need stone at that point, didn’t want the stand being crushed when someone put the thing down a bit too carelessly. Yeah, that was a good idea. If only he had a way of doing this all at once without the need for multiple pieces. A bow would work but he didn’t have the wood available to make that many bows, or the space to store them. Small weights were easier.
Crafting hammerweight from 3 iron. Simple (30) + IronM/WepII (30) + K (30) + Race (5) + Forge (5) = 100/Autosuccess. No masterwork check being performed. Hammerweight type 3: 30 Dam; Req 12 Str, 6 A, 6 K.

At the rate Tyr was burning through iron these weights would all but clear him out. Oh well, it wasn't like he couldn't get more. Kable would probably love the business too. Expanding the weight system to include much higher tolerances would take an absurd amount of raw materials if the Duke couldn't find another way. This didn't even start to include other forms of personal measurement. This whole venture was going to be a heavy undertaking. Lots of startup work, little true gain from said work except for making a bunch of other work briefly easier.
But hey, ambitiously lazy is as ambitiously lazy does.
Not gonna bother doing the math here. 4 Iron: Hammerweight type 4: 40 Dam; Req 16 Str, 8 A, 8 K.
Almost there. One more and it would be time for the more 'adventurous' undertakings, which is to say including leather and cotton into the weights. There was something else nagging at Tyr while he worked away at the chunks of metal. Having an established weight system could be very useful for several mechanical processes. A lot of things were done haphazardly, made to work no matter at the cost of resources and effort. If you could precisely measure what had to be done, the work required less of both. Of course for this to work you had to establish a system of things to measure against.
5 Iron: Hammerweight type 5: 50 Dam; Req 20 Str, 10 A, 10 K.

Working things to be slightly heavier took a slightly different approach to the design. Which only really meant more stuff was added in. The leather and cloth involved in the pieces would just be wrapped tightly around the grips until enough was added. It wasn't a difficult thing, but it would give him the variance in weight that he needed for the project.
Crafting Hammerweight 1mk2 (1I1C) Simple (30) + IronM/WepII/TailI (35) + K (30) + Race (5) + Forge (5) = 105/Autosuccess. Masterwork (10+35=45) = Three degrees possible. wiJlqSmY Two earned. Dam: 12.
The secondary side effect of trying to vary the weights of these things was that it was giving him a slight bit of practice with other materials than iron. Well, and leather. He hadn't had much use for cotton previously, now it was giving him that 'just a touch heavier' aspect. It might not be the most practical thing to make with it, he really needed to make a personal backpack soon, but it was work nonetheless and that was all that counted.
Crafting Hammerweight 1mk3 (1I1L) Simple (30) + IronM/WepII/TanIII (45) + K (30) + Race (5) + Forge (5) = 115/Autosuccess. Masterwork (10+45=55) = Three degrees possible.
One earned. Dam: 11.
The very first set was almost completed, and so far it was lining up well. It still seemed like a highly frivolous pursuit, but someone had to do it. Progress demanded things be orderly, and guesswork was no longer tolerated. Especially so if he was ever to start making those second skins of his. Those would be incredibly useful, granted he could find someone who could actually make use of it. With enough resources he could outfit his soldiers, but that sort of effort would require an impressive industrial complex that he didn't have the manpower or resources to create, much less sustain.
Crafting Hammerweight 1mk4 (1I1L1C) Simple (30) + IronM/WepII/TanIII/TailI (50) + K (30) + Race (5) + Forge (5) = 120/Autosuccess. Masterwork (10+50=60) = Three degrees possible.
None earned.

All conceptual work was done. It had been done, now it was just the generic 'work' that needed doing. It might not be all that gratifying, but at least it was easy. Tyr set the iron in the forge, got out the bolts of leather and cloth, and went pounding away on his hammerweights.
Making the next six hammerweights. Hammerweight 2mk2 (2I1C) Hammerweight 2mk3(2I1L) Hammerweight 2mk4(2I1C1L) Hammerweight 3mk2(3I1C) Hammerweight 3mk3(3I1L) Hammerweight 3mk4(3I1C1L) All are autosuccesses. For knowledge gains sake: Mk2 includes iron/wep/tail. Mk3 iron/wep/tan. Mk4 iron/wep/tan/tail. Two of each. Masterwork checks: Marks 2 and 3 DC 55, Mark 4 is 60. x0cuoWmC 2mk2 fail. 2mk3 1 degree. 2mk4 fail. 3mk2 fail. 3mk3 1 degree. 3mk4 fail.
With the steady ringing of a hammer, the Shaper lived up to his name and shaped the raw metal into blocks. The leather and cloth wrapped their respective weights and six more joined the line. There were only three left to make and this chore would be done, for now. Eventually stronger customers would come along and he would have to expand the line. Unless he figured out that 'better way to do this'.

While doing some personal work, Tyr wanted to update his own gear a little. What he was wearing were some of his first un-mentored creations. They weren't bad per say, but they weren't something he could truly use in the field. There happened to be a few other experiments he wanted to try while he was at it. He needed more practice with steel, and there were a few...exotic materials he was itching to try.
The easy things could be made later. Right now it was time for the hardest thing he could presently make: A second skin. Even better, it would be his first attempt to use one of the Hydrillium metals. To cap it off? It would be Cordite. Because why not right? Tyr was giddy with excitement as he started to heat the metal, managing only to calm down once he first started hammering it. It was incredibly difficult to hammer into shape but what did you expect from one of the hardest metals known to man? Tyr hammered out incredibly thin plates from the block and went to work shaping them. Getting each plate to hook to another just right was a painful process. If they didn't lock in right the skin would get in the way of your movements or fall right off.
Crafting a second skin from 1 Cordite. K (30) + Armor M(20) + SC (15) + Race (5) + Forge (5) - Difficult (30) = DC 45 0YjL|dpn Fail. Skill roll to fix it, DC 30,
Second fail, Cordite lost.
Halfway through making the plates the metal started to cool faster than expected, causing some of them to warp inward. When the shaper tried to correct the mistake the thin plates started to crack under the heat and stress of reshaping. It was a sad moment to lose such a rare metal, but the practice was good. He had a better idea now of how to approach his second attempt, which would be right now. There was a fire burning in his soul right now, he desperately wanted this to work. To work a new material on his own would validate all of his shaping training, and to make this design for the first time would make him the creator of something entirely new. Completing both at once would be the fantastic completion of a long held dream.
Crafting a second skin from 1 Cordite. K (30) + Armor M(20) + SC (15) + Race (5) + Forge (5) - Difficult (30) = DC 45
Success! Cordite Second Skin: (1Cord) ··

The Skin was a success and Tyr celebrated for a while by running around his manor house in it doing whatever came to mind. He was giddy with excitement and it showed. This came to an abrupt halt when he realized the rest of what he used as 'armor' was old and nowhere near good enough to go with the Skin. For the next two days the Duke did nothing but turn iron and wood into steel. It took long hours, required several naps, and caused a few interesting smelting accidents, but the end result was enough steel to build a statue.
Refine used 35 times. 17 to turn wood into charcoal, 18 to create steel. -34 wood, -1 coal, +18 steel. Tyr earns: Steel Smithing II and Steel Smithing III
With the materials ready it was time to shape. First came the extremities, gloves and boots. These became a mash of materials as the design was worked. Cotton wrapped in leather formed a comfortable inside, iron and steel created the armored outside.
Gloves and Boots: 3 steel, 2 iron, 4 leather, 2 cotton. K (30) + Steel3/IronM/TanM/ArmorM/Tail2 (85) + Race/Forge (10) + Easy (15) = DC 140. Autosuccess. Masterwork checks: Gloves first. DC95, 5 degrees possible. FLnUgQ67 56 - 3 degrees earned. 72 - 2 degrees earned. Excellent War Gloves: (3st2i4l2c) 96 DR, 2 cold (30 Str, 14 Agi, 14 K, 2 Cha) Grand War Boots: (3st2i4l2c) 89 DR, 2 cold (30 Str, 14 Agi, 14 K, 2 Cha)
With the idea down and proven to work quite nicely Tyr applied the exact same principle to a helmet. Why change what isn't broken right?
Same thing for a helmet. Rolling masterwork. 37 - 4 degrees earned. Superior War Helm: (3st2i4l2c) 104 DR, 2 cold (30 Str, 14 Agi, 14 K, 2 Cha)
The first three aside, Tyr swept the shop clean while planning out his next three pieces. Two weapons and a set of body armor. He'd recently figured his hands were good enough weapons of their own that they only needed some more metal to really damage things, so knuckles it would be. The body armor though, that would be tricky. He had only one bit of Hydrillium and he really wanted to give it a go. ··

Finally came the really interesting bits. Weapons first, because those seemed to be the easier of the sets. Unlike normal knuckles which were meant to be things that -you guessed it- went over the knuckles, Tyr had a slightly different setup in mind. These would almost be a secondary set of gauntlets that fit snugly over the first. Why not utilize what was already there? Sure it would be slightly awkward at first, but they weren't meant to be all that functional. You smashed things with them, you didn't go handling fine china. The design would be a weird one, using wooden filler between the steel to add solid mass without requiring as much of the metal. Kept it lighter while still as strong. Ebony was a fairly hard wood after all.
Crafting two over-the-gauntlet knuckle weapons. 4 steel, 2 iron, 2 ebony. K (30) + Easy (15) + IronM/Steel3/Carp1/Wep3 (55) + Forge/race (10) = DC110 Auto. Masterworks: DC 65. Four degrees possible. wlCppSnR 48 - Two earned. 31 - Three earned. I'm acting like it only earned two though. If you have a problem with me willfully making something worse, let me know. Grand War Claws: (4St2I2Eb) 127 Dam. 30 Str, 18 Agi, 16 K. Tyr earned Carpentry II.
Claws complete Tyr set them next to the rest and went on to the final piece, his body armor. This, oh this was going to be fantastic. It would use the only piece of true Hydrillium that he had, but anyone who saw it and knew the metal would very clearly know he was of a high status.
Crafting War Mail. 1 Hydrillium, 1 steel, 1 iron, 1 leather.7 K (30) + Difficult (-30) + Race/Forge (10) + IronM/SteelIII/TanM/ArmorM (75) + Skillful Crafter (15) = DC 110. Autosuccess. Masterwork check: DC 85. Five degrees possible. 38 - 4 degrees earned. Superior War Mail: (1Hyd1St1I1L) DR 147; Str 30, 17 A, 15 K.
And just like that he was done. His full set of gear was complete and oh my was it looking pretty. You know, some days he just loved being able to pop out beautiful looking things with a hard days work. Time to go put it on and wreck some stuff.··

Progress continually demanded newer and better things. Tyr could carry a highly limited number of things on him at any given time, and that was aggravating. Sometimes you just needed that extra pair of tongs, or another work hammer. To that end he was making himself a nice pack, spacious and with extra pockets for every little knick-knack he could think of. Extra pockets was always a good design feature. This thing didn't need to be armored though so there was no use in getting any iron out. No, this would be a job for the scissors, needle, and whole spools of thread.
Crafting a backpack from 5 leather and 16 cotton. 15 large slots, 15 small. Simple (30) + K (30) + TanM/TailII (30) + SC (15) = DC 105. Autosuccess. Masterwork check: DC40. Two degrees possible. zDMZGgfU Failed. Field Pack: 15 large slots, 15 small slots. Req 26 Str, 16 Cha, 5 A, 5 K.

And now it was time for an entirely new endeavor. Crafting equipment was one thing, but every now and again you needed something less forceful. In this case paper. Tyr had a lot of writing to do, and little to do it with. Letters, books, contracts, they all required paper, and no one had it. That probably had something to do with the current lack of written knowledge floating around, and a strong bias against having it made, but neither thing changed the reality of the matter.
So Tyr was going to fix that.
He had plenty of reeds and straw to make the pulpy mass required. All it took was some water, plenty of mashing, a thin structure to separate individual layers of pulpy mass at a time, and weight to squeeze the water out with. Good thing he'd made all those hammerweights huh?
Attempting to turn 4 reeds into 2 paper. Simple (30) + K(30) = DC 60. T4nA8kOc As the pulp settled onto their frames Tyr set flat boards over the top, weighted down with hammerweights. It was let to sit, the water was slowly pressed out, and Tyr was left with two nice clean bits of paper. Plenty for several letters, or enough for two very important things. He left one piece alone, saved for whatever might be needed, and then cut the second into five letter sized pieces. It wasn't much, but it was a start.
The letters were already necessary and had ideas in mind to put on paper. While another stack of pulp started settling Tyr penned out a quick example order and filled some information in. Now how many mistakes had he made...
Writing out a commission order. One language, very basic. Simple (30) + K (30) + LiteracyI/High CruicI/Law0 (10) = DC 70
Close, but not quite. There were a few mistakes in spelling and he'd listed some of the materials twice. Tyr tossed the letter in the forge fire and started over. He hadn't had to really practice his writing in forever, this was going to take a bit to get used to.
Writing out a commission order, again. Simple (30) + K (30) + LiteracyI/High CruicI/Law0 (10) = DC 70
No no no! While the materials were good he'd messed up who was the commissioner and who was doing the work. Had this been an informal thing he could get away with adjusting one letter and scratching out another, but Tyr wanted this to at least look like an official document. If he couldn't manage something like this how was he to send a letter to any other Duke, or pen the laws of his land?
Trying this one more time. Simple (30) + K (30) + LiteracyI/High CruicI/Law0 (10) = DC 70
Well, most of it had gone well. Except there was this worrying part about stuff not being turned over if a valid copy WAS presented. That needed to go.
Gonna use all my letters trying to write one thing. Holy shit Tyr, get it together. Simple (30) + K (30) + LiteracyI/High CruicI/Law0 (10) = DC 70
There were no words. Tyr was not good at writing yet. At least he was practicing right?
Seriously, all that hard made paper just gone. Simple (30) + K (30) + LiteracyI/High CruicI/Law0 (10) = DC 70
And finally the letter came out perfect! Proud of his work the Duke carefully signed the form. There was a gamble involved here, but with a shrug the Duke tilted a candle for some wax and imprinted his seal.·····
