Khamat sat alone in his tent, the camp bustled about him but he himself was quiet, the chief sat brooding, licking his wounds so to speak as he still hadn't forgiven himself for the event a few nights past. He had fought a human, not even a particularly strong one, but he had still fought the man and been beaten by him, it was unforgivable in his eyes that he had ran out of strength so quickly, he was supposed to be better than the humans and if he ran out of strength quick as that then how could this be true.
He had failed himself and he had failed his clan, he had failed them as their leader. That sat heavily on his shoulders, the idea that he had failed his clan was truly not a good one as far as he was concerned, the Flametongues were everything to him. He had visions of how they should be, how they could become great, how he could make them great.
The problem was that it didn't appear as if he could do it alone, they had no fighters left to them that could be considered skilled, and no weapons or armour to equip what few fighters they had anyway. Tocgar could make them arms and apparel, but only if he had the raw resources with which he could forge their equipment, something that he was sorely lacking.

He heard the flap to their small tent fly open, knowing of course that only one other person would open it and come in like this without waiting for permission or anything along those lines, but it wasn't someone he wanted to see. Inzila stood in the doorway, blocking any light that may have filtered through anyway.
A look of dissapointment was etched on her face, he knew to well that she was the only one that would be honest with him, even amongst his own kind most would not dare speak out against their chief. She on the other hand, would quite happily speak out against him, slap him down if that's what she had to do to get him out.
Khamat grunted loudly and stood, it wasn't an arguement he could win, he knew what he was supposed to be doing and the job that till now he had neglected. He had sat in his tent, taking no food nor water for the last day and a half, and while the camp could function, they needed to see their leader out and about, needed to see he was still there.
Walking past the glare of his mate with slouched shoulders Khamat reached the tent flap and took a moment, drawing himself up to his full height and squaring his shoulders, trying to make himself look every bit the chief that he was, even if right now he didn't really feel it. Khamat brushed aside the tent flap and stepped out into the bustle of the Flametongues camp, wondering what needed tending to first.

They had only set camp on the day that he had come back, and so a lot of the tents weren't fully up yet, he would help them get up. Khamat, unlike most leaders, had no issue with working with his people, putting his blood sweat and tears in as they do, he wasn't like some of the despicable human nobles who would allow their people to do everything for them and do nothing himself. His tribe were his life, he may be their leader, but he is still no better than them, he should work also.
Khamat left the small area around his own tent, heading for the outskirts of the camp where tents were yet to be put up, the Flametongues put up their more useful tents first, the ones that would make the rest of the work much easier. The cook's tent, the blacksmiths, and the like, the ones that would be needed from the moment they settled down. The ones on the fringes were then done after, the ones that were simply living tents.
Upon his appearance a lot of the Skaldi seemed surprised to see him out, of course that wasn't surprising considering he'd spent the last few days either holed up in his bed or not in the camp at all, so no one had really seen much of him of course. Khamat sent them scurrying back to work with a glare, knowing that they needed to get all these tents up by nightfall.
One tent was going up rather slowly, the group working on it being hatchlings, they thought they were grown but really they were still hatchlings by his and most Skaldi's standards, but he would help them fix this. "You hold the leather and you anchor the supporting poles, the rest of you hammer in stakes to keep it up." Khamat growled multiple times and pointed to the various parts that he meant, his Sissak hopefully speaking true to the younglings so they would do this properly.

The tent went up rather slowly, but unfortunately one couldn't listen it seemed. Instead of anchoring the supports they had simply thrust it about an inch into the ground, nowhere near enough to actually anchor it into the ground, the whole thing was unstable and so about halfway through came sailing down on them, almost crushing several Skaldi as it fell.
Khamat identified who he had set to embed the supports and cuffed each around the head, not hard enough to hurt them but to remind them that they were stupid. They stumbled off, shameful that they had failed in this so-simple task, and Khamat motioned two other Skaldi over hoping that now they would manage. The two new Skaldi were also still hatchlings by mosts standards, but they were close to becoming Skaldi in their own right, now let's hope they couldn't screw up this tent.
Khamat directed them to their place and their position, himself grabbing a large wooden pole and a scrap of tent leather which would go towards making this tent, holding it ready for several seconds before nodding at those around him, signalling that they should start.

Once again it fell, although this time they were much more prepared for it to do so and so no one was even close to being hit by the falling tent or coming to any sort of harm. Khamat however was angry that they hadn't managed to so much as put up this one tent, if they couldn't put up the tents then how were they suppopsed to live in them. Maybe it was a sign that they needed to find more permanent holdings, they couldn't travel around forever could they, they needed to find some land and settle down.
The issue with this was that there was no free land around, what little there was was already owned, and he had no Skaldi warriors with which he could wrest away that control of the land by the humans. They polluted the land, ruining nature for their own gain, and yet still he couldn't fight them, not with such a small number as they were, nor with the measly amount of fighters that they currently possessed.
He had heard tales of another Skaldi clan to the south, supposedly a much bigger group than the one that Khamat watched over, more vicious also if the tales were true, and yet with the same goal of reclaiming land for the Skaldi. Maybe if he were to send a Skaldi down there to talk to the chief of this other tribe then there could be a joint venture between them in order to work on this problem.
If this other Skaldi tribe had the same objectives than him, then surely they would help him gain some land for him and his own, they would be better protected in their own land as well as then being able to effectively raise men for themselves and such, everything would be much easier. What irked him was, what would this other chieftain ask for in return, if it was to help further his goal then their goals were aligned anyway, the reclaiming of Skaldi land. If it was people, money, fighters or anything of the lot then he had none to spare, barely enough to keep his own tribe moving. It was still an idea though, possibly his only one if he wanted to settle the Flametongues without losing all of his own.

The more he thought about it the better the idea sounded, if they could forge an alliance with this southern tribe and combine their strength to give the Flametongues some land to settle on, then things could only go up from there. If they had somewhere to call their own, somewhere where they could raise buildings and cattle and stay permanently then they would be much stronger than they were as the nomads they currently were.
The issue was that he was unsure what this would cost him, he had never met this other Chieftain and so didn't know what he would ask for in return, that assuming that he said yes in the first place. It was a longshot, but the other alternative was Khamat walking single handedly into a village to clear it out for his tribe, he wasn't willing to allow his own to die due to their lack of weapons or armor, if he could contract them then these other Skaldi would do the job far better.
After all of the tents were set up, Khamat conferred with Tocgar on the matter, there was some deliberation on whether or not it should happen, but if nothing else it would help them make links with the other Skaldi tribe, should a time when that link be needed arise, then they would have someone there to help. At worst, they got no help, at best they gained an ally.

If he were to do this then he'd need to prepare for it at least, he'd have the best chance of success if he went personally, it would be a show of respect to this other Chieftain as well as allowing him to talk to them face to face instead of through mediators and runners carrying words from one to the other. He had no guards or anything of the sort, nor would he want to put any of his Skaldi in danger so he would go alone, plus one Skaldi travelling through was less likely to be seen than a group of 10 or 20.
He had a rough idea of where it was he had to go, and from there he could search, he would need supplies for a start, he'd also need to organise someone to look after the tribe while he was gone. On second thoughts he should take Tocgar, he would need the smiths expertise as he travelled, plus you never knew when having a second pair of hands would be useful. The two of them though was where he drew the line, that was as far as he would go, and even then he was only taking the smith Skaldi as a matter of convenience.
It would be an interesting trip, he wasn't sure as of yet if it would actually be worth it though, would he gain anything from this or would it just be a lot of time wasted for him to then come back to the Flametongues exactly as they are now.

Khamat left the Skaldi to their work, confident in their ability to set up camp, regardless of the fact that the two attempts he had taken part in had failed, he knew his Skaldi could, they had done so before many many times. They shouldn't have to though, yet the humans were constantly hunting them and harrassing them, they were being forced more and more north every time they were caught. He feared that soon they would be forced into the Darthak's, and that wouldn't end well.
If they could get themselves some stable ground, no matter the fact that then the humans would know where they are, they could build on that land and defend themselves properly, huts and houses were much better protection than tents, and they could wall off their cities and such. If they could manage it properly then they would be absolutely fine. (he hoped)
That was all assuming things went to plan.
Khamat stood away from his camp, looking at them, pride in his features at the relative order with which they set their camp, happy with the speed that it was going up. It was all due to practice, but they had gotten it down almost to an art. Everyone knew what job they had and what they were supposed to be doing as well as where they were supposed to be in the process. But still though he wished they had somewhere where they could settle in peace, that was the whole point of what he was going to attempt with his contact with the other Skaldi, hopefully he'd be successful.

Several hours later...
Khamat rushed through the camp, it was now set up fully but there was still much to be done. Constantly fending off questions on the organisation of hunting parties and allocation of their resources, Khamat pushed through the horde of Skaldi crowded into this one place. The smell of cooking meat was strong in the air as evening meal was prepared, the camp looking almost like it was covered in fires from the amount of cooking fires that needed to be set up for a camp so big, yet all were carefully set away from tents to prevent fire spreading.
He'd decided now that he would be going, and was sorting out the camp for his absence, setting trusted Skaldi to oversee things such as hunting, supplies and movement of the camp. He knew that to travel so far south he would be gone for a long time, and as such needed to make sure that everything was sorted before he left so nothing would go wrong. He didn't know exactly how long he would be gone for, he didn't know exactly where he was going, nor did he know how long he would be there for, he just knew he would be gone for rather a long amount of time.
He hoped though that his absence wouldn't bring the tribe to ruin, and that when he came back he'd come with good news rather than bad. If this other Chief decided to help them then they could finally begin to rebuild and bring themselves up again, if not then his journey would have been for nothing and he might as well have just stayed here anyway. But he had to try, even if the journey owuld present considerable danger for him as he would be travelling across land primarily occupied by humans.

A few days later....
Khamat lugged the rough leather sack on his back, quickly cobbled together from scraps of broken tents and such by Tocgar, it was good enough for all it needed to do right now. All that was in it was food and drink for the Skaldi chieftain, Tocgar standing next to him and carrying an identical sack filled with almost identical contents. The smithing Skaldi though had brought a few of his more basic tools just incase they should be needed at some point, Khamat doubting that they would and thinking them just as extra weight to carry.
Everything had been sorted, amongst much shouting and arguing between Skaldi, all being silenced occasionally by Khamat when it seemed as if things were getting to heated, he needed to be able to insure that his people would not go to complete ruin when he went and he was fairly certain now that they would be ok while he wasn't there. Still though he worried like a mother after their child, even if most were his age or older anyway, they were his family and he was concerned over how things would go when he wasn't there.
But still, he had to at least try to win them the better quality of life that they deserved, meaning that he had to at least try this avenue, if it failed it did, if it succeeded then they would all be better off.
Khamat turned his back on the camp, Tocgar at his heels, and set off.
