The boy shot up in a sweat, a deep feeling of loneliness to greet him in his waking hour. He had been dreaming of his family, more specifically of his sister and how she used to comfort him during his occasional outbursts of emotion. Jorkahn's parents had told him that his somewhat intense emotions were due to the small amount of Elven blood in his veins. His father and brother experienced outbursts too, but they tended to happen much more frequently and proved to be several times more intense. After all, the Elkagr blood in them ran much thicker.

The feminine half breed took deep breaths until his heart beat had returned to a normal level. He waited even longer for his emotions to balance out. He was feeling a small sense of panic and regret at how the previous altercation with the Kingsman and his new friend/acquaintance had gone. But, considering he had been left to sleep for what seemed like a few hours he imagined the situation had solved itself. The Wealddir looked at the door and sighed loudly. It wouldn't hurt to check, would it?

Wiping the small amount of sweat left from his forehead the wandering child stood up and grasped for the door handle in the low light. When he finally found it he gave it a reluctant turn and slowly stepped back out into the Artificery. He imagined Tyr wanted to talk about his little Magic outburst earlier that morning. But what would he say? What would he do if the Kingsman were still here? Or if there had been a fight that he had somehow slept through? What if the King's men were waiting for him right now? What if no one was around?

Oh shut up kid, you'll cross those bridges when you come to them. Just try not to fall in.

[Tyr]

Tyr sat out near the tanning racks, slowly shaving some wood down to make arrows. He had a bow, might as well eventually get to using it. He'd wanted to be sewing a pack together, but with the price of leather on the rise that was looking to be incredibly costly. If he could ever get out of Kable's for more stuff he could get a hold of some cotton. Or if he was really lucky, some fur from the animals in the woods. Free was always great. With a stack of arrows ready Tyr stood and brought them over to the forge, noticing Jorkahn was emerging from his room then too. Good timing, he could get to the louder part now, making the arrowheads.

"How'd you sleep lad?" The shop had been quiet since the whole ordeal with the Kingsman, and Tyr had closed the doors early today to keep people out. People could still knock of course, but at least they couldn't just walk in now. There was a lot he wanted to talk to this one about, especially why he came walking right out of the woods, but it seemed best to start slow. Didn't want to startle him off after all.

The boy still had his dark brown cloak around him, the hood pulled down this time around. When he walked into the room he heard the sound of sharp metal slicing against soft wood. Turning to the noise he noticed Tyr was preoccupied fletching some arrows. Before he could take another step or say a word the craftsman spoke first. Jorkahn stretched and yawned before answering, taking that moment to think about what to say.

"It was quite c-comfortable, thank you." He was a little quiet, but not as quiet as he had been around Ethan. And, while the bed and the accommodations had been comfortable, his sleep hadn't been. He had woken up in quite a bad mood, but he wouldn't tell Tyr that unless the man pushed. Instead of speaking further the young lad watched Tyr work. A few thoughts cropped up in his head that he mulled over in silence for a moment. When he was satisfied he would silently walk over to the tanning racks and sit down in a chair near Tyr. He was fidgeting a little bit, but he did feel a lot more comfortable around Tyr than most people. The man reminded him about his sister a little for some reason or another.


"u-u-Uhm..." Jorkahn coughed quietly and cleared his throat. Steeling himself he thought he would try speaking again. "Not to sound c-callous, but, uhm... W-What would I have to do to requisition, o-or rather commission some arms or armor from you?" One day you will get better with your words, maybe.

[Tyr]

"Good, you seem like you could use the rest. Bit of a rough day you've had." Nearly getting smashed by a tree, having to deal with an overly critical Kingsman, apparently not knowing how to deal with people at all. It had to be very trying. Finishing up the rest of the arrows, Tyr set them aside for later practice. Might as well learn to use that bow at some point, you never knew when you might need to defend yourself.

"Ask mainly, that tends to be the biggest part of it." A playful smile lit up Tyr's face. "Having some Ritz to pay with also tends to help. What are you looking to get?' While waiting for the lad to make up his mind as to what to buy, Tyr started working on some stuff for himself. As costly as it would be to make, he needed a pack for future travel. He could make a better one later, with cheaper materials, but for the moment Tyr took four pieces of leather and started sewing them together. Satisfy needs first, wants later.

Unfortunately it wasn't exactly a standard thing. Tyr was much better with weapons and armor, figuring out a bag pattern on the fly wasn't an easy thing to do. Without any real substance to it the thing became an awkward bag of leather that couldn't really hold much without falling apart. Tyr set it aside, might as well burn it for fuel since it had been cut into small enough shapes he wouldn't be able to re-use it.·

Jorkahn nodded at Tyr's words. Today seemed nearly as long as a week and it still wasn't over yet. He was surprised he wasn't more emotionally compromised at the moment, as the boy tended not to deal with stress very well. Maybe the few hours of sleep was all he really needed? Granted it would take a while before he could fall asleep at a respectable hour again, but he would just have to deal with that.

The craftsman's response to his question made the lad flush slightly red in embarrassment, at this rate one person may think Jorkahn was starting to run a fever or something. He watched his new friend work as he thought about what he would want crafted. "W-well. I could use a better axe." The boy ran his hand over the blade of one of his axes. It was effective, yes, but not quite the quality of the ones his father's guards had owned. "Two handers really are the best. Many people think it is all about strength to wield an axe like that, but it is really all about technique. You have to use the momentum that the large weight produces to slice through the air." His stutter was suddenly gone, a new air of confidence and even joy escaped from his voice. He was imagining the large battle axes that he had seen back at home, not the pretty ones that some of the nobles carried around, adorned with jewels and pretty metals. Those were more ornamental, he imagined the large engraved ones on the mercenaries backs. Now those could do some damage.

Jorkahn blinked his eyes and cleared his throat as he realized how into his description he was getting. He found it surprisingly easy to talk to this man. "U-uh, maybe a new set of armor too. I didn't leave home with anything sturdy. I tend to travel a lot and run into the occasional bandit or a-animal." He had been so lost in thought and nostalgia he hadn't even noticed that the craftsman had made a useless bag.

As Jorkahn talked, Tyr started working. It was weird hearing the way the lad described the axe, it was one of the clearest things he'd said the whole time. If the Duke could get him to keep talking with such ease then things might get a bit better for the lad. If he could get used to talking to people the whole world would open up for him. Hammering three ingots together into one solid mass Tyr started shaping it into a big double bladed axe head. Punching a hole first, he then fanned out the metal on each side and tapered it off into edges.

"Got some practice with an axe in your younger years?" Finding a topic of conversation was remarkably difficult. Asking why the lad left home could be touchy. Asking him what his home was like could be even touchier. Instead Tyr hoped Jorkahn would find some thread to chase down with his question, and started shaving a block of walnut wood down to make a long handle.

Once again Jorkahn watched the other man work. The clang of metal on molten metal as well as the whoosh and crack of the forge was surprisingly relaxing. He looked on as Tyr threw some ingots into the fire and, when they had melted, pulled them back out as a solid mass. The craftsman then began to hammer out the lump into a flatter piece of metal that resembled the head of a large axe. It was rather intriguing and strangely exciting to see a weapon being made. It was even more exciting to think that the weapon may be being made for him to use.

The boy looked up when Tyr asked him a question. "W-Why, yes!" He paused then, almost saying nothing else, but shrugged inwardly when he couldn't think of a reason not to give a bit of history about himself. Tyr didn't seem the type of man to really judge him for it. "M-my parents encouraged me to learn whatever I w-wanted, as long as it wasn't politics. My brother and sister were the heirs to our family enterprise, s-so I didn't see a need to get into trade or mercantilism either." His voice had risen slightly once again when he began talking about his past. He realized then that, though there was no reason for Tyr not to know more, there wasn't really a reason to be telling him all this either.

"There were a surprising number of mercenaries and those of the warrior type in Fordeth, they carried an assortment of weapons, Axes just fascinated me from a young age, and I focused on those out of all the other weapons I trained with." He felt like he was rambling again, he wasn't as embarrassed as before, however. And, even if he had been the axe being finished shifted his focus yet again. The rather feminine looking boy breathed in sharply when he looked at it. After a moment of staring he gingerly ran his fingers over the blade, still warm, and then the handle. Quite suddenly the self proclaimed axe enthusiast picked up the weapon with both hands and hefted it off the table with a show of strength that many may find surprising given his small stature.

Jorkahn walked over to an open section of the building so that he wouldn't end up damaging anything or hurting anyone. A short while later after taking up a practiced stance he began to swing the axe around. He pivoted with his feet and body and used the balls of his heels as focal points to balance and twist. The rather large weight of the axe head swung around nearly effortlessly in the air with a few chops and swings. Instead of using brute force on each swing he actually used the momentum of his previous swings to keep the weapon moving, never stopping until he came to rest in the same stance he had started.

The weight was well balanced, the shaft was smooth and durable, and the blade didn't have too many flaws to throw off how it sliced through the air. It wasn't the best axe he had ever seen or even held, but it was the best one he had actually wielded, if even for a little.

"Excellent! Simply marvelous! I have never wielded an axe so well made!" The boy was obviously impressed and had a beaming smile on his face. He didn't even realize that Tyr could make something better if he wanted to.

Tyr's smile widened just a bit at Jorkahn's mention of his raising. They were very similar in how they'd been brought up with one distinct difference. Tyr's parents had hoped he would learn politics, but encouraged him when he chose a different path entirely. But the way Jorkahn talked about his family's 'enterprise', his family must be near nobility. There weren't too many people who were in that situation these days. Life was hard for most people, the country was in a rough time. While the lad went through the motions with his blade, Tyr tried to stir up some more conversation topics in his head and went through the idle motions of forging up some basic armor.

A simple leather vest, with chainmail surrounding it seemed appropriate. Light, easy to maintain because it tended to do it itself, and still decent protection. Plus it helped Tyr use his resources more effectively. Full iron would bleed that dry, but he barely had any leather to replace it with at the moment. He'd have to see about getting a bigger supply from Kable every month. His own mine helped offset his need on outside sources, but it didn't produce much. He really needed to go mining on his own.

"Perhaps one day I might make you an even better one. For now I feel it would be too heavy for you to wield." Or he could make a masterpiece instead of a normal blade but that wasn't really something he could control. Sometimes things just turned out better than normal. "Your family sounds kind to let you learn what you chose. Were they as supportive when you tried to learn magic as well?" His voice stayed even, holding no hint of admonishment for the word magic. Tyr had long ago come to terms with the need to find people with that skill, they would be some of the few who might be willing to hunt up old libraries for him. The clang of metal would mask his voice from outside the shop, so Tyr held no worries about discussing this now.

Tyr laid the armor out for Jorkahn to try on as well. It was still a fine piece, even if not one of his masterworks.·

The boy was testing out his shiny new axe a bit more as Tyr continued to work. The balance was perfect. If it had been much heavier he probably wouldn't have been able to wield it very well, if it was much lighter it would have lacked the necessary weight to punch through armor. It was amazing how Tyr could size the boy up so quickly and make such a fitting weapon. Jorkahn hoped he could become as intuitive at some point in his life.

As if being able to read what the boy was thinking Tyr said he could make an even better one when Jorkahn got stronger. The lad nodded and looked his new axe over in his hands again. With enough practice he was certain he would get stronger. The boy's ears pricked every so slightly at the sound of the word magic. He thought for a moment before sliding the axe under the back of his cloak and strapping it to his back. It fit rather nicely and wasn't as difficult to hide as he thought it would be. When he was done he turned to look at Tyr.

"T-they... They don't know that I have any books on magic. R-regardless it doesn't matter, I have never been able to successfully cast a spell, but I do enjoy r-reading about them." He felt comfortable around Tyr, he didn't know why the man was interested in his past but the boy didn't really care. It was nice to finally be able to talk somewhat openly with someone for once.

"As for my parents, well I wouldn't necessarily say they support my other endeavors to be nice, they just have no need of me learning the family trade. They let me use their resources within reason and don't otherwise hinder my efforts to learn what I want as long as it does not bother them in any way." He felt a surge of sadness well up inside him and he fought his best to hold it down. Sometimes he hated having Elven blood in his veins, it could be quite problematic.

He noticed that Tyr had finished with a set of chain mail and set it aside for Jorkahn to try on. Deciding to turn his attention to other things the boy walked over and, after taking off his cloak and the weapon on his back, threw it over his head and put it on. The armor was heavy but not too heavy and it fit rather soundly. The mixed breed jumped up and down and walked around with the armor on. Slowly another smile started creeping up on his lips. " So, how much do I owe you?"

His stutter just seemed to disappear at random times lately.

Having someone easily talk about practicing, or at least trying to practice, magic was strange. Tyr was normally all about following the law, departing from that normal just felt odd. But it was necessary on two fronts. When you try to accept everyone you can't shun someone for any reason, magic included. Also magic was impossibly useful. Jorkahn having never actually cast any spells though, that was odd. Maybe he wasn't a mage after all and was just curious about it?

"Perhaps you've never cast a spell because you didn't have the confidence for it. Try doing something simple first, prove you can to yourself, then work up to it. The forge fire for instance. Try doing something simple with that." He had no idea what he was talking about but it seemed like something that should work. There was fire and it was right there, why not just....do something to it?

"Money isn't really something I need. How about one favor for each piece? Nothing too difficult I assure you, I won't have you go kill someone or anything like that. Perhaps just escort me somewhere, or get something for me. Is that agreeable?" He needed someone to travel north with him to find that Skaldi Na'ka had mentioned, Jorkahn would do just fine for that.

Jorkahn didn't entirely understand what confidence had to do with him not being able to cast any spells. From his limited experience being wrongly confident in yourself could get you hurt or even killed. But then again, the boy wasn't a very confident individual to begin with. He looked at the fire, then back to Tyr, then to his own hand and repeated the cycle a few times. Eventually the lad just sighed and lifted his hand towards the fire, attempting to draw some of the flames form the forge to the palm of his hand. Nothing too difficult, he had read it in a book that this was a basic technique. Then again he wasn't sure of half of what he read in that book.

He kept trying to draw the fire out, a look of concentration on his face when Tyr spoke to him next. Without really thinking the boy said, "Of course, I can't guarantee I would be the best protection however, as I only know the basics of combat." The look of concentration was slowly starting to turn into a strained look of frustration.

The boy started to hum lightly from straining so hard, the fire didn't seem to be affected at all and there was nothing happening to his hand. After a while Jorkahn let out a gasp before relaxing. He hadn't realized he was holding his breath the entire time.

[Tyr]

Tyr watched with mild fascination. This would be the first magic he'd even seen performed. It seemed though that when nothing started to happen Jorkahn became frustrated, and increasingly more so the longer it went on. That was no good. From experience Tyr knew that getting frustrated didn't make anything easier. Smithing iron was all about patience and concentration, why should magic be any different? It seemed close enough to 'smithing' reality in various ways.

"Sometimes basic knowledge is all you need, the rest is practice. Practice here, keep trying. Don't worry if nothing happens, but believe that it will. You've only failed if you refuse to keep trying to succeed." Most of what his masters had taught him way back when seemed fairly applicable now. All Tyr could do now was wait and see if his encouragement would work.

When his breath had returned to him and his heart rate had slowed Jorkahn nodded at what the craftsman was telling him. He supposed the man was right. Though he had tried a great deal in his past to cast spells he had never been successful. Maybe he had given up too easily? Or maybe he really did lack the confidence to pull it off? Either way he would shake off the frustration he had been feeling and take a deep breath. When he felt more confident he raised his arm in the same manner and tried again.

A few moment went by and nothing happened, so he began to focus on what his reading had told him. Focus on the fire in the forge, imagine it as a liquid that you are pulling from the forge into your hand. Imagine the flame appearing in your palm, crackling and warm. Gather the energy from deep inside and push it out through your hand and fingers, flowing between you and the flames.

He was holding his breath again without realizing it, trying to channel the fire to his hand seemed to take all of his concentration. His face was turning slightly red from straining so hard. Eventually the boy let out another gasp of air when the spell just wouldn't work. He was less frustrated this time around, instead focusing on what he may have done wrong. A small frown formed on his face.

"I-I felt like I did even worse this time. B-but I think I know what I am doing w-wrong. Should I try again? Or should we move on?"

While Jorkahn kept on working at the forge, Tyr dropped some ingots into the thing to let them heat up. Might as well keep working, and if Tyr was going to have the lad accompany him on some errands he might as well have some decent gear all around. Boots would be useful, didn't need the lad breaking his toe kicking a rock through his terrible shoes or something random like that.

"Keep trying. Don't worry about failure, just keep going. Giving up after a few attempts gets you nowhere. If it's a difficult thing to do you're not likely to do it immediately anyway." If it became too much of a physical strain that was one thing, but just stopping trying because it wasn't working didn't make sense. Tyr was terribly at hammering nails as a lad, but just because he kept missing with his hammer didn't mean it was impossible. He just had to learn.

Tyr formed the boots in the mean time, packing the inside with leather for comfort then framing them with iron plates for protection.

Tyr placed the finished work on the nearest table. Jorkahn could try them on later after he got done with the forge fire.

Jorkahn decided to take another small rest as his heart beat slowed down and his breathing returned to normal. In the meantime he would walk a bit closer to the forge and watch as Tyr placed more materials inside and began to make yet another item or piece of gear. The work ethic of this man was rather admirable, it actually inspired the boy to keep trying. His earlier frustration was much less apparent now.

When the wandering half breed was satisfied he was rested up enough he went back into the same stance as before. The only difference this time around was instead of simply holding one hand out in a supine position, he would cup his other hand a few inches over his palm in a prone postion. Perhaps it would allow the flow of energy to distribute more evenly, if there was any energy to distribute. For all Jorkahn knew he could be making a fool of himself and actually be incapable of wielding magic.

No, he would refrain from that thinking for now. There would be time to doubt himself later, he wouldn't insult himself or the man who was trying to cheer him on. The boy took a deep breath and tried again, willing the power up through his body, out of his hands, into the fire, and back to his palms.

He ran out of breath much quicker this time. He really needed to work on his breathing technique. Letting out a gasp of air and a small grunt of frustration, a look of anger adorned the lad's face. It came rather suddenly, almost uncontrollable to the part elf. He stomped on the floor and walked away from the forge in a huff to sit down a few feet away from it. The most infuriating part of it all, this time around, was the fact that he hadn't felt a single thing. Was he progressively getting worse? Was it really impossible for him?

Another short break to cool down, then back to the training again.
