Ssryl had become quite good at telling his story, that he was to escort the young master to Fordeth. There were oft raised eyebrows, but they had not hampered their travels. Now, here they were, in the north. Somewhere in these woods were his kin, he was unsure which clan his ancestors hailed from, but he had no interest in his southern kin. Ssryl did what he could to keep Thomas comfortable, attempting to start a small fire on the outskirts of the wood. It would serve multiple purposes, it would keep the boy and himself warm, it would hopefully draw the attention of the flametongues, and hopefully it would keep the beasts within the woods at bay. He searched for kindling and wood and attempted to start a fire.
Camping: (Normal, k:10) OBK1K1|M (Rolled 1, made that fire like a boss)
With his penchant for magic and the presence of what one could normally make a fire with, the wood practically burst into flames, shedding both light and warmth on the two. They were out of food and water, "Sorry Thomas, we go hungry tonight. At least we will be warm." He made a soft area for the boy to lay, the boy's stomach growled causing pangs of grief in the skaldi. He kept watch over the boy until he too drifted into a restless slumber.
The internal struggle Ssryl was facing became apparent in his slumber, he dreamed of his kin, he dreamed they ripped Thomas apart in front of him. He dreamed that they mocked him and beat him, humiliating him before killing him too. His dreams revealed a certain truth he had been avoiding, he was as afraid of his kin as he was of the humans, but at least the humans would likely care for the boy.

Earlier that day:
Khamat and Tocgar had gone out hunting, aiming to relieve some of the stress of being cooped up in the camp for a long period of time, sure he loved his people and he loved being around them, but every now and then it was always good to get out and stretch your legs where you can.
He'd found that hunting was a rather good way to release stress, and the materials were in need. Even in death the animals continued to bring life, the animal's provided by nature continued to help others even after death. It was unfortunate that he should have to kill animals, but their pelts were needed for so many different jobs, so many different things that they could help with.
The two of them were stalking through the forest, kept low even though still at his lowest Khamat was rather tall, looking for an animal, preferably a rabbit or a deer or something that would give them a usable pelt, Tocgar though was much better at this, he seemed to have much keener eyes and a better sense of smell which made him much more suited to hunting.
Halfway through their hunt though, Khamat spied a glow, a red glow that usually indicated fire, why would anyone in their right mind make a fire in the middle of the forest in the middle of the night. There was a human village not to far away that would be shelter enough for most humans. Khamat and Tocgar crept right up to the edge of the area where the fire was, Khamat staying further back as his large frame made him incredibly noticeable, the much smaller Tocgar moving almost to the edge of the small clearing and peering in.
Khamat watched as Tocgar went forward, watched as he reached the edge of the clearing at which point he froze in absolute surprise, what was in the clearing that could surprise a Skaldi. Khamat crouched, ready to pounce on whatever it was should it make an attack at Tocgar, he couldn't see into the clearing himself but trusted that his reactions should be fast enough to catch whatever it was in decent enough time that Tocgar woudn't be injured. He couldn't stand himself if Tocgar were to be injured.

Ssryl awoke, his nerves suddenly on edge. He couldn't place what was off, but something had brought him from his slumber. He placed some more wood on the fire, giving it fresh fuel for it's orange glow. Thomas was still sleeping, not a sound from the boy other than the gentle rasp of his breath. Ssryl stood, stretching his arms and legs as he looked around the clearing. Perhaps he was just paranoid, still he didn't think he would be sleeping anytime soon.
He looked to the moons and stars, it was really a beautiful night. If he had any food it would be perfect, but he didn't even have any tools to hunt with. He considered his plan to meet the flametongues, there weren't many places where an ex-slave skaldi could find refuge. Hopefully they would at least recognize his utility, but he couldn't help but ask himself if he was placing Thomas in harms way.
He thought back to the shadowscale raid, they had slaughtered the men, women, and children most of whom were unarmed. They had acquired weapons, armor, and raw materials, but they could have had the same without the slaughter. Had he lost his spirit as they had said? Or were they the savages that humans justifiably fear and resent. Would the flametongues be any different? Ssryl slammed his fist into the ground, was there a place in the world for him? His rage subsided and he turned his attention to the boy, a place for us?

It was a bloodthirsty wolf. It's teeth bared, fur matted from the dirt and living in the wild. Where there is one wolf there is always more. The creature took no chances and made a deadly lunge at the young Skaldi's throat. Hunting is a deadly game. The creature missed however, Tocgar got lucky. Tocgar froze as the wolf attacked, his body unable to respond to his movements, just before it hit him tough he jerked slightly out of the way and avoided what could have been a highly deadly attack. His eyes had been focuses on the campfire in front of him, more specifically the human and the Skaldi around it, not to his right where the wolf had attacked from.
Khamat growled in fury as the wolf pounced at Tocgar, partly at the wolf for attacking his comrade and partly at himself for not noticing it quick enough to stop the attack, luckily though though the beast missed Tocgar. Khamat broke from his cover, roaring loudly at the wolf in an attempt to frighten it off before aiming two clawed punches at the beast.
Tocgar meanwhile had realised that he needed to be useful, the Skaldi and the human were definitely something that merited attention but they were not the thing that was trying to kill the two Flametongues right now, the wolf was the main threat.

He heard the snarling, but could only guess where it was coming from. A commotion not too far into the woods. He knew not what beast lurked beyond his sight, but knew he was in no condition to face it. He raised Thomas from his slumber, "Keep near the fire, hopefully it will keep us safe." Thomas proceeded to scramble closer to the fire wrapping his arms around his knees and tucking his head, the boy was clearly frightened.
Ssryl wouldn't let anything happen to the boy without q fight, he proceeded to grab a decent sized branch he had collected for their fire, it wasn't much but it was surely better than his fists. Then he watched the wood line, praying whatever beast had snarled and snapped would move on without showing itself.
Paranoia my ass, Ssryl thought, next time I'll trust my instincts.

With their fists the two skaldi managed to strike the wolf, but they did little damage to the creature. Yelping and backing away after being hit solidly twice, once by each skaldi, yet not intimidated in the least by the lizardmen, the wolf regained its composure with the distance. Then it let out a loose howl, calling for its pack-mates. Three more of the wolves came out of the woods then, making their attacks on the Skaldi.

Khamat and Tocgar stood there dumbfounded, they'd managed to do absolutely nothing to the wolves other than cause it to call other wolves to them, now that there were four wolves and two rather wounded Skaldi their chances had dropped, in their state no way could they fight it out with all of these wolves.
Khamat's roar had done nothing to intimidate them, it had been in complete vain, it looked as if the two Skaldi would die here, neither was in a condition where they could fight off the wolves with any form of efficiency. Khamat roared again at the wolves, hoping that even against their increased numbers that his sheer bulk and imposing figure would stop them in their tracks. It was more a cover than anything, he was just trying to cover up his own hopelessness.
Tocgar's presence burned into Khamat's mind, he must make sure that the Skaldi was not harmed, he would not allow one of his clan to be harmed while he still drew breath, no way would they be getting a bite out of him. "Tocgar, run" He snarled, dagger-like teeth bared at the wolves, carrying on his front even as he felt his energy being sapped from him. Khamat pulled the younger Skaldi behind him and hoped he'd take the order he'd been given, intending to use his own body as a shield. Even if he couldn't defeat the wolves he could slow them down enough for Tocgar to make his escape surely.
Tocgar stopped as he was pulled behind his chief, shocked that Khamat was going to try and hold off the wolves by himself, his mind was in conflict as he argued against himself, should he stay and help or should he go back as he'd been told, he could bring more Flametongue, they could help? No, they were to far away, by the time they got there all that'd be left would be Khamat's remains.
Khamat roared at the younger Skaldi, "Go you damn hatchling" He said, holding his large posture even as the three newcomer wolves jumped at him again, pouncing in their small pack at the large Skaldi. Khamat stood in place to block them off from pursuiing Tocgar, slowly edging towards the clearing where the flames were coming from in the hopes that it would help to keep them away slightly.
Tocgar turned, and although he was not proud of it he ran, running backwards through the forest, he ran as fast as his clawed feet would allow him to, heading back to the Flametongue clan in the vain hope that he'd somehow be able to help Khamat if he got there in time. As he ran he remembered something important, he had never told his elder Skaldi about the other Skaldi and the human in the clearing, his chief would never know what it was that had caught their attention in the first place.

Ssryl couldn't make out what was going on, the light of his fire didn't carry far enough. He did hear the howl quite distinctly, a sound familiar to the skaldi, but never before had he been this close to the source of the howl, it must have been just beyond his sight. Then he heard something that surprised him, someone was screaming in Sissak.
"Go you damned hatchling."
His kin were in trouble. Suddenly Ssryl was torn between protecting Thomas and saving his kin. Unless he could manage to do both, he had little with him but the fire that was keeping them safe. Fire, suddenly he was taken back to the workshop in Rosterford, the mage-hunter standing in the shop hovering over a sword that Rorik had finished the day before. "Fine craftsmanship, it would be lovely in flames." the mage-hunter had said.
Rorik grunted his approval, "Be my guest." Ssryl had watched and listened as the man uttered an incantation over the blade, upon completion the blade glowed with the heat of the forge. No matter what, the blade never cooled unless sheathed. The incantation had been utter gibberish, but Ssryl had caught most of the words. He had committed those words to memory as best he could remember. He had used some of the words when Rorik wasn't around, he had never achieved great affect, but he had managed some minor manipulation of flames, even managing to light a few things on fire. If ever there was a moment when flames could be useful it was this, the forest was rather dry, it might be possible to start a fire that would drive the wolves away.
Ssryl focused on the woods in the direction of the howl, putting together a random slew of the arcane words he had memorized. He really had no idea as to their meaning, but he had a vague notion of which words had something to do with flame and he spat them out as though profanities, pouring all his intention into achieving his desired effect: starting a large enough fire near enough to the wolves to drive them away.
I really haven't a clue as to what i'm doing out of game, closest description I can think of is a rough equivalent to a magical unarmed attack that produces flame.

The three wolves had attacked Khamat as he was now the closest. One bit him on the shoulder, tearing into his scaly flesh. Another bit his hand, wounding him there. The third got its teeth into his thigh, nicking a large vein, blood rushing out of the wound into the creature's mouth. The skaldi had roared again, but to no avail. Tocgar attempted to flee, but the wolf that they had encountered, and who was not attacking, headed him off. It now was in front of him, snarling at him. Then out of nowhere fire appeared nearby. It was large enough to be a campfire, but not overly frightning. It did scare off the wolves that had bit Khamat on the hand and shoulder. The remaining two attacked their respective targets. Tocgar, and Khamat.

Khamat was hit several times by the vicious wolves, the most harmful of these attacks being where one wolf took a large chunk out of his thigh, hitting a major blood vessel and causing Khamat to leak blood rather viciously, a large roar, this time of pain shook him as each set of sharp teeth hit home, he flailed trying to dislodge them, hoping that at the very least Tocgar had got safe if he was going to die. It was at that moment that fire sprung up out of nowhere, two of the wolves being frightened away by it, Khamat struggled for breathe as blood pumped out of the wound in his thigh, painting the forest floor red with his life force, returning his life to nature as was intended. The thing was, Khamat didn't want his life to return to nature, it sounded good being one with nature and all but he wasn't ready to die, he had many things he wanted to accomplish as it stood currently that he would not be able to do if he died. The one wolf that was still with him was crouched low as if ready to attack again, summoning up reserves of strength he didn't even know he had, being kept up purely by willpower alone Khamat prepared to receive it's attack, standing as tall as he could with his crippled frame and roaring at the beast for what little good it would do, although hopefully the fire that had appeared near him and the pure primal power of the hatred he was putting into this one sound would frighten the beast off. He wasn't sure that he could continue to stand for much longer let alone block what was coming but he held himself up and faced death with claws bared and teeth snarling at the wolf. Should the wolf still attack Khamat he would try to feebly dodge out of the way of it, self preservation taking over and making him at the very least try to dodge.
Tocgar was also similarly unlucky, the original wolf having come back to him and cut him off, apparently being much faster than the tired Skaldi, seeing that running wasn't an option Tocgar stood with a low centre of gravity, ready to dodge as soon as the wolf tried to attack him, Khamat had sacrificed himself to let Tocgar live and he wasn't about to waste that sacrifice because one wolf was blocking his way. Flames flared up back where Khamat was but Tocgar was concentrating on this wolf, the minute it jumped at him he attempted to dodge it's jaws before aiming two punches straight at it's head.

His slurry of arcane words had worked, a small fire had ignited in the woods. A small victory, but from the gnashing of teeth and grunts of pain, it appeared as if his gambit had failed, the wolves still attacked his kin. He focused everything he had on the fire he had created, spewing the arcane words over and over, if a small fire had at least startled them, perhaps a larger fire would drive them away.
He poured everything he had into the flame, the physical strain would leave him weakened and vulnerable, but if it drove off the wolves, then it would be worth it. All the energy he had both physically and mentally were directed at the fire, Bigger, bigger, it just needs to get bigger. practically raced through his mind a dozen times a second. Then he was spent, he had nothing left to offer, he slouched to the ground hoping this time his gambit would succeed where his previous attempt had failed, otherwise he and Thomas would be easy pickings once the wolves were done with his kin.

The wolves had all run off scared, this stranger had essentially saved their lives with his fire, how he had created this fire was another matter completely, Khamat was sure that a normal Skaldi could not do that, but with him in his current state he had no way of being able to figure it out.
Khamat was slumped, resting on one knee as blood gushed out of his thigh, the stranger was out cold and Tocgar was standing alone several metres away from the two. In that fight neither of the Flametongues had done very little and that hurt their pride, even if they were happy to be alive the pride of their clan had been tarnished from the fact that they had almost been killed by wolves and they'd been helped by a stranger.
Tocgar sprinted back over, seeing the state his chief was in, he spared a look four the outsider but saw that he wasn't in a particularly bad way, just had tired himself out as far as the young Skaldi could see, that was about as far as his injuries went. Khamat on the other hand had a giant bite taken out of his thigh, a bite on his shoulder and one on his hand, he was bleeding heavily and was fading fast.
Khamat shuddered slightly, he was starting to feel cold, the cold of ones life leaving their body, his life was returning to the endless cycle of nature. A slight spluttering could be heard as he tried to growl at the injustice of it all, but to no avail. Tocgar was panicking, he hadn't a clue what to do at the sight of this much blood, you had to put pressure on it right? He didn't know if it was right but at this point he was willing to try anything to help Khamat, he didn't want his chieftain to die so soon after promising them all such great things.
Khamat's vision was fading fast, the injustice of it all, saved by a stranger just to die anyway, Khamat slumped to the ground in a heap, close to taking his final breath, the stranger in his view as he could not move his eyes, it was another Skaldi.

Ssryl heard no more howling, no more snapping, the wolves were gone. He could barely make out the shadows of the other Skaldi, one crouched over the other. Ssryl was exhausted, but he would see if they needed help. "Thomas, stay near fire."
Then he made his way over, with the flames he had created he could make out what was happening, the big one was bleeding out. He had once seen his master seal a wound with heated metal, perhaps a burning stick would suffice in this situation? He grabbed a stick from the fire, "Hold still." In sissak. Then he thrust the stick against the wound, blood sizzling off the glowing embers.
Would it work? Was the stick even hot enough? Or would he merely hasten the Skaldi ' s demise? The next few moments would decide the skaldi's fate.
