That morning, Élise and Cassius had woken early to see Ventus off. Their final moments together were full of awkward sibling hugs and a couple tears – as the three had never been apart. Of course, the three held back on what they really wanted to say – “Don’t Go” or “Come with me” – and tended to keep conversation light, pleasant – “Be safe” and “See you soon”. Quant and brief in parting, but long lasting in effect. Élise stood at the outskirts of Fordeth until her brother faded into the fog. Cassius did not stay with her, knowing she needed space and he as well had to help Ma’am open the inn.
When the ritgr finally returned home, she had collected herself and taken to working on a few lines in her journal. She used the letters and what Guinevere had taught her the day before to spell out words she already knew quite well in speaking. She would have her temporary tutor check her writings later that day.
Then, Élise informed Cassius that she was going to practice in the grounds behind the inn’s bathhouse. She asked that he pass this message onto Guinevere when she was ready.
Out onto the back patio, across the lawn between the inn and the bathhouse, and behind the buildings was an area of Fordeth in ruin. It wasn’t pretty, but Élise had long since cleared up an area. In her first years of military training, she had disciplined herself to clear a large portion of the ruin so that much of it was flat ground and dirt. Later on, she had aligned large stones here and there for obstacles. Around the outside of her training circle, several posts had been stacked. They were cut up and splintered now, but still useful for practicing her swordsmanship. She trained her daily, once at dawn and another in the evening. Usually, she used a sword, but today she rummaged in the ruin for as many good sticks as she could carry. She sat them down in a pile off to the side and dusted off her hands. Élise hoped that they would suffice for sparring.
While she waited for either Cassius to go on break and assist her or Guinevere to join her, Élise unsheathe her short sword and dashed at one of the posts. She followed up her run by a kick, pushing off of the post and flipping, her blade spinning around her and striking the wood with a diagonal slice across its face before she landed in a crouch, using her free hand to keep from falling forward. Élise repeated this, each time backing up more and more to extend the build of her charge and heighten her spin as she kicked off of the post with more force.

Guinevere's morning had started early, in realizing the position in which she fell asleep. With a yawn, and large stretch she glanced for a moment at the unused bed. They might as well have just given me a chair. Though it was an odd position to sleep in and left her body groaning, she felt rested. With a shrug was back into her stack of papers until it was finished to her best knowledge. Next time, she would definitely not believe the Accountant and leave the paper work for him. He was paid for this sort of thing. Guin did not enjoy this number mumbo jumbo, and the sad task of cancelling her parent's old accounts. The last place she had left was the Inn, to do all of that now. Knowing that Ventus was leaving, Guinevere used this time to make sure every last ritz owed to Ma'am was paid in full, if her parents had left behind any sort of tab. The half-Elkagr came clean at that time to Ma'am, about at least the murder of her parents. She also wished her well, and offered help if it was so needed. She planned on continuing the tradition of using this Inn as the go to place if she was needed in Fordeth. Something she made clear. It was Guinevere's favorite place.
Breakfast was just a biscuit, as her stomach couldn't help but be tempted by a glazed and heavenly smelling cinnamon roll. Alexander and Celene's cruel joke of making Guinevere hate sweets still held firmly with their daughter. Though she did always wonder why people enjoyed cakes so much, everyone she had tried had been horrible. But everyone had different tastes, she supped. Unbeknownst to her, they also ate such cakes that had not been laden with other ingredients to taste horrible on purpose (even when 'accidentally' left out).
After that she managed to bathe herself, and arrange her hair into a side braid. Today the color adorning her lids was orange, her lips done in a soft coral hue. A little more time than usual was spent on her appearance today, as had been done the day before. Today's garb was a lot more simple. A white fencing style shirt, though with the collar stiff and upright that led into a V-neck, though a modest one adorned with a bit of white inlaid designs. The shirt was tucked into the just below waist tan embroidered pants that held to her hips and legs tightly the strings holding her pants together criss-crossing on both sides, with brown fur lined boots.
At the time Cassius did retrieve her, Guinevere had a stack of papers with a word written largely on each piece of paper. Most of them were words relating to combat, hoping that the words might ring a little familiar to her. Making sure to slip on some fur-lined cloves that matched her boots she marched for the training grounds Elise had set up. Overall, she felt the woman had done well with what she was given. Even watching the blonde haired figure charge at the post turned training dummy, she couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy. But that was never the life Guinevere could have. Setting her papers far from a post where Elise could ruin them, Guinevere would wait for Elise to stop.

Élise had heard their feet on the dirt of her training grounds as they rounded the bathhouse. Cassius was asking the woman how she slept and if she enjoyed breakfast – frivolous things that made Élise smile. The ritg continued to attack her post, dashing up the pole several steps the final time before she did an entire backflip off of it. Her agile figure twisted gracefully before landing on her feet. She sheathed her blade as she straightened her posture.
“Good morning, Lady Guinevere,” She spoke clearly across the field and approached her tutor with a smile. The girl may look calm, but she felt a jitter of excitement run down her spine. Anything that brought her closer to her goal made her happy. Her newfound friendship with Guinevere was both enjoyable and a much needed opportunity, “I suppose my brother has already asked you how you are. You need not repeat yourself, but I hope that you are well,” She gave a deep bow to the Lady and smiled, “So, how shall we begin our training?” Élise could only remember fragments of the plan that they had discussed briefly the night before, as she had been in such a sleepy state.
Cassius had been smiling since the moment had fetched Guinevere. It was hard to contain himself after having such pleasant moments to remember from the previous. The end of their conversation was still shining brightly in his heart. He couldn't just facade false pretenses in public around - which could be troublesome for the Lady - but he was modest enough to not bring up the fact that they had been stuck in a room together for at least thirty minutes. As Élise said, Cassius had asked how she slept and whether she enjoyed the breakfast. He had been learning to cook from Ma'am, and had made the sweets that morning. It had been a necessity to learn, as he and his siblings had a rather strong addiction to sweets. When Élise guessed his inquiries to a "T", Cassius shied away from the training grounds, dismissing himself back to work with an obvious blush on his face.

Guinevere answered Cassius, stating that she slept well and that she quite enjoyed the biscuit. She didn't mention much else, as she had dared not grab one of the rolls. She was thinking to wonder aloud with him about the nature of such things, but alas it did not happen. This time her eyes were stopped from following him as he left, which was a little sad. But Guinevere did have one of her guards coming up in short order. He would pass Cassius on his way to the field. The man had been ordered, but for what he did not know. Usually the Lyethe family did not need them while in Fordeth, not that it bothered him. He was still a little green to all this guard duty thing, and that was why Guinevere chose him. He would likely remain silent out of fear for being mocked on a mistake.
"Ma'am?"
"Ahh, yes Tom, please hold these papers." Handing him the papers, to which he responded with a curious look.
"Why does it say sw-." He was interrupted with a flippant wave.
"This time we will make this a game, do you know the game horse. Every time you score, or I score we get a letter until we spell horse. The first to spell horse is the winner. You score by reading the word correctly, I score by countering your hit." Or this game would end up going far too fast. "Tom here will hold the paper with the words on them." The words were large enough on the paper that she could easily read them on the paper from a small distance.
"That sound fair?"

Élise watched the exchange between Guinevere and her guard in silence, eyeing the papers with great curiosity. She hadn’t caught his hint of a word. When Guinevere began to explain the plan, Élise nodded. She actually didn’t know how to spell “horse” – and for that reason had no previous knowledge of the game – but understood well enough how things would play out thanks to Guin’s clear explanation.
“Sounds fair,” She replied as she went to retrieve a pair of hefty sticks from her piled collection, “We will use these to practice countering,” Élise stated, holding one out for Guinevere when she had returned, “Countering can happen in several forms. It is ideal that you block or dodge an attack and then deliver a follow up hit, but it isn’t impossible to counter after receiving a hit. The whole idea is to hone your reflexes. One can shield themselves, never taking the offense – but that will not bring victory. In the same, one can never defend – but that will bring much failure. Observing your enemy’s movements and using their attacks against them can be a tactical way to combine defense with offense,” She recited much of what she knew about the basics of countering. Perhaps learning by word would influence the Lady more, but Élise was a person of action, “Would you like me to demonstrate?” She was willing to go a couple of rounds to try a successful counter against the noble.

OOC: Guinevere is teaching Elise High Cruic, Elise is teaching Guinevere Swords I
"My mistake Ritgr Elise, horse is spelled H-O-R-S-E." Realizing that she may have spoke too soon, and assumed far too much of the yet unread party before her. At least it would now give a hint of how many they each needed to score. That was the point, least of all horse would stick out to be a memorable word.
With all the help the word horse would be to Elise's future.
Guinevere tested the weight of the stick in her hand, attempting to copy the way Elise held it in her hand. "I am adept at dodging, for the least part. I really think we should just begin, I prefer to learn by doing. " Guinevere was a little eager to begin the game. As usual she felt a little rushed to begin, and get going but that was a normal for her. It was a little unwarranted and warranted at the some moment, she had a people to think of and steward over. It was always in the back of her mind.
Tom held out the piece of paper reading 'SWORD', assuming that it was meant for him to do. He all together felt a little awkward standing around and watching the two females fight, making it worse was that it was his Lady of all people he had to babysit as she trained. Could be punished if she were to be harmed, or worse killed? That would end his career forever. Yikes.

When Cassius had finally returned to the inn, as he’d stuck around a while longer after passing the guard. The young man had watched to see them discuss their plan – having not known really what reading and writing had to do with Élise’s training grounds. Once he had understood all that he said, the Halfling smiled and left. He returned to the inn, fully intending to continue with his duties, but was instead surprised to find a familiar face conversing with his aunt.
“Ma’am! Uncle?” Cassius greeted the two with wide eyes and a slack jaw. He had not seen his father’s and aunt’s brother in ages – years. The large human smiled down at him. He looked a bit tired, as if he had run all this way from the southern Helkorth province where he resided.
“H-O-R-S-E,” Élise repeated several times aloud but under her breath. She cemented the word in her mind, as not to lose its spelling or number of turns to victory. The girl was slightly competitive. She would do well to keep track of her turns. While Guinevere prepared her weapon, Élise twirled her’s, flicking her wrist and fixing her stance. She was light on her feet, knees bent and arms loose.
“Right.” She fully agreed with the notion. Learning by deed was always best. It forced one to go out of their comfort zone, challenge them, and develop their own habits based on personal skill level.
When the paper was shown to her, Élise gave the lettered paper a stone-faced glare. It was her thinking face, but it looked a bit frightening. She wouldn’t notice that – as the entirety of her focus was absorbed in translating the High Cruic. She read the “S”, “W”, “O”, “R”, “D” clearly in her head, running her mind over what that would sound like several times before exclaiming, “SWORD!” The word was clear and exact. Élise had no doubt she was correct. A bright "H" lit up behind her eyes.
After having made her guess, whether it was successful or not, Élise would be sure to meet Guin’s eyes. She would get her attention then strike; vertically slashing down with her stick to either hit or is countered by the Lady. Élise would not hold back, knowing to pity would do the other an injustice. If there were wounds, she would help Cassius tend to them later. Now was the time to gain strength. Her wooden blade successfully hit Guinevere, a loud smack upon her shoulder that would surely leave a bruise, if not boil the blood to the surface.

Guin grinned a little, so she had been studying her words after all. Guinevere was proud, but at the same time didn't like that Elise had already scored a letter. All in terms of wanting to seem equally matched against the half breed before her, sure Elise shouldn't be counted as competition, but she was seen as such. Well, if such a thing would ever be admitted. "Good! That is an H for you!" Being honest in the game that they played, it was hardly fair to steer her incorrectly, though she could make herself have the advantage if she wanted it.
Guinevere tried to prepare for the attack, but Elise's strike proved to be faster than her ability to get out of the way.
In what could only be called beginners luck, Guinevere moved the wooden sword over Elise's arm and angled the pointy end into Elise's chest. The Lady's shoulder would probably be hurting into next week, but she had managed to land a blow and one on her first try. That fact alone stopping Guinevere from doing little more than tearing up from the blow. Bright blue eyes lit up, glad that the game had started in both parties scoring. "Point for me?" The Lady's smile turned into something almost wild. Hitting Elise with this stick was bring something primal out in her.
"Next word!"
Tom snapped back to attention after his wincing, he would surely be in some sort of trouble for this. He just prayed the two would avoid giving blows to the face. Or causing the fair Lady a limp either, Tom did not like this. But he dared not defy the will of his lady. The paper he held read 'PARRY'.

“Good to see you, lad!” The man bellowed, slapping his nephew on the back, “You’ve grown an awful lot since I last saw you! You’ve always been tall for your age, but Jul Damn! You’re gonna hit the ceiling if you keep this up!” Cassius couldn’t help but laugh at that, though he wished his Uncle would hold his tongue. Even though the atmosphere of the inn wasn’t often radicle, it still was a public establishment in Fordeth.
“What’re you doing here?” Cassius asked? Brushing his uncle’s hand off of his now sore shoulder – the man had a strong pat.
“Came for you!” Could his uncle please stop laughing for one moment---oh – he had. The man’s face was rather serious, but only for a breath. Something clouded over it to conceal the expression in a cheerfully lighthearted appearance once more, “As well as your aunt, brother, and sister. It’s a tragedy what’s happened. I can’t just leave all of you here, especially not my dear sister, to run the inn.”
“That’s very kind of you Howard,” Cassius’ aunt had teared up at the delicate mention of her husband’s loss. She tried to keep from making a scene, dabbing at her puffy eyes with an overused handkerchief and coughing to clear her throat, “Unfortunately, you’ve just missed the brat. He took off this morning, headed towards Mardok Duchy for a job.” That caught the man’s attention.
-Just as Guinevere had caught Élise’s surprise. She hadn’t expected the Lady to so quickly land a counter on her. The motion, though it was rough after taking such a hard blow, was an immediate reaction to her attack. Guinevere struck back at the ritgr and called out for the next word to be shown.
Still a bit amazed by the successful counter on the first try, Élise looked at the cards with a bit of uneasiness. She recognized everything but the first letter. It was the one she’d only just corrected in her journal with Guinevere the day before and she hadn’t quite memorized it yet. “… Arry…?” She tried to guess, skimming over the first letter, “I do not know.” She finally admitted, this time striking immediately after her guess. She did not allow Guinevere to have a forewarning, as the Lady should get used to responding at a moment’s notice. Her blow was successful again, a horizontal slice hitting Guinevere in the side, the branch making a painful sound as it collided with Guin’s lower ribs. Even Élise pursed her lips and winced at that. She would let Cassius do all of the first aid later as an apology and a return exchange of sympathies…

"Parry, but a good start." In her attempts to correct the Ritgr, Guinevere had completely missed her chance at even trying to stop Elise's blow with her own weapon. The stick went flailing in the completely wrong direction, and Guin had even managed to lose a good grip on the stick. This thing was very awkward for her to maneuver, and at all manage to seem terribly graceful with. It was a slight bit unnerving being so unfamiliar.
"You- really seem- to - have a problem- with P." But certainly not running down her legs. As Guin's brain so wittingly devised in her head. As a way to cope with a few faltering breaths as the result of sudden stick to the ribcage syndrome plagued her with immense pain. Maybe they should have played a game were it didn't involve Guinevere getting hit so hard with sticks, it had already happened twice. Guinevere likely would not want to move at all after this, she could only imagine the agony to be felt the next morning. Of course she had not thought to bring a healer with her.
To not give Elise the complete satisfaction of witnessing her whine about the strike, she raised her wooden sword. Attempting to be a bit more prepared for this round.
Tom shuffled to the next page. 'DODGE'.

“Parry..” Élise whispered to herself after Guinevere had said it. She took one last look at the card before it was changed to a new word, telling herself to remember the previous. When the ritgr looked back at her tutor, her breath was a bit ragged and she visibly seemed in pain. The Halfling felt a bit sorry, wondering if she should ease up all together. Confused by whether she should pity the girl and lighten her swings or continue at this pace, Élise was a little too conflicted to really focus on the words. She tried to make out the word, thrown off by the “D” and “G” right next to each other. She couldn’t make a proper sound for that in her head. What she said came out as “Dod-guh” when she finally answered. Then she gave a lighter swing, her wrist not as steady, completely missing Guinevere.
“Ventus getting a job? That’s not the responsible lad I remember. I hardly believe he’d take orders from anyone!” Uncle piped over the noise of the crowd gathering in the tavern for an early lunch. Both Cassius and Ma’am assured the man that Ventus had indeed made off towards a Craftsman shop in the Mardok Duchy early that morning, “I don’t blame him, looking for work outside of Fordeth. This place is so dreary. I actually came up here to persuade you and your sister to perhaps think of moving along. Maybe you should join Ventus in that Duchy?” Cassius had knit his brow together in concern after hearing this.
“But the inn,”
“That’s why I’m here. It’s not your responsibility to worry about this place. You’re a young man who should be allowed a fresh start in this world,” His uncle interjected.
Cassius smiled and shook his head. Though he liked the idea, he had no where to start. Plus, “Élise has recently been enlisted as a Ritgr to the Sovereign. I can’t even begin to think of leaving my sister here alone.” The same flash of seriousness that Cassius had caught before swept over his uncle. This time, it didn’t go away in the blink of an eye.
“Is that so?” The man seemed to broad on this for several seconds before he sighed, “Well things change. Where is your sister?” Cassius knew the man would be an interruption for Guinevere and Élise, so he did his best to distract the man from going out back for the time being.

In most circumstances dodge would have not been a word she would have started with, but perhaps too much benefit has been given thinking that Elise would start to guess the word on how it sounded. Maybe not enough cards had been shown that Elise could start to guess the pattern. But perhaps she was just trying to know the words on merit, rather than just lying and guessing at the word. " Close, some letters you will find make different sounds when put together. Or be silent all together, like to 'K-N-O-W' as in to know somebody has a silent k." Deciding at this time to attach a mini lesson to the task of reading the word. In such a light hit Guin was just sure that she could manage to hit Elise, but it was not fated to be so. Her shoulder spasmed in the movement to lift upwards. Her own hit was a failure of any sort to hit the other woman. Honestly she felt a little embarrassed, but quickly regained her composure. Soooo fired. Shamed. Laughed at. Tom thought to himself. Grimacing more than just a little now. But as he assumed her switched the paper again. 'VENTUS'. A few name threw into the mix surely couldn't hurt.

Élise avoided the counterstrike without really thinking about it. She was recovering form he own outlandish swing, not expecting to have missed the Lady. Secretly, she was a bit glad to allow the other some recovery time. Élise nodded to the guard once she had remembered the useful word, “Dodge”. How fitting considering the two’s recent exchange in non-blows.
Élise stared at the new card. The letters were so familiar in their layout. She must have seen them a hundred times in that exact formation. For whatever reason, despite swearing to have probably said this word a hundred-plus times, Élise couldn’t seem to read it – must have been some unlucky slip of the tongue or some playful idiotic trick happening in her mind, drawing a blank just at this very moment. The girl shook her head, feeling a sudden wave of embarrassment punching her right in the pride. Honestly, Élise felt like a child. She shook her head and sighed, striking Guinevere hard with her stick once more, “I,” She landed a blunt blow into Guin’s chest. If it had been a sword, the attack might have pierced straight through, “Don’t know.” Élise huffed, prancing back after the attack and waiting to see if she would have to block or endure a counter.

" Ventus." Guinevere forgave Elise not getting an answer that she thought would be simple. Seeing a name in high stress practice was different then if she had the time to seriously consider and read over the word. Here Elise was likely focused on the sword play, rather than really wanting to read. Was this too much combined in one exercise? Rather than question she moved to strike back. And it was a hit! Ignoring the pain of again getting hit in the ribs by the hurtful training sword. Guinevere went high to Elise's low and hit the Ritgr in the colar. Guin grew a wild grin on her face. " O...hh!" Starting her exclamation out way too loudly. It was pure excitement. Even as the motion made her ribs ache something terrible. Tom switched the word, 'GUARD'.

Élise would have smiled at Guinevere’s successful counterstrike. Yeah, she really would have been glad, if she weren’t hit across the neck. The ritgr choked out a gasp and stumbled back after the blow. She felt her neck and spit in the dirt – she wasn’t raised with the tendencies of a Lady. Élise wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and glared at the ground where her spit was soaking the dirt. That hurt. An ugly red mark was already coiling around the pale skin on her exposed flesh. The girl thought it a bit high up for Guinevere to be aiming, but didn’t want to scold her on a successful hit. Everything was fair game when striving for improvement – at least, that’s what Élise told herself to keep from getting angry about it.
“Good,” Woah, was that her voice? That sounded weak. Oh well, it was the best she could do after having her throat smashed. She let out a shaky breath and straightened up. Élies examined the card without a care for the passing time. She wanted to recover her calm and properly read the word this time. After about a minute of silence, Élise glanced at Guinevere shyly. She sounded out the word in her head and thought that perhaps this time she was right, but feared making another mistake. Finally, Élise spoke up, her voice still a bit weak, “Guard?” The word was a bit odd. The arrangement of “G” “U” “A” and “R” making a strange sound in the way they all worked together. After Élise had read the word correctly, she bounced on her heels back and forth. She twisted her body gracefully, winding her arm as if she were preparing to throw a ball. She picked up her front leg, putting her whole body into the movement like a dance as she twirled her sword behind her back, rotated her hips forward, and brought the wooden blade down in a diagonal slash across Guinevere’s chest. The move might even snag the Lady’s beautiful attire.
Perhaps she was a bit vengeful about that last blow….
