Basic Information
Name: Jakob Zakhagr
Race: Human
Age: 32
Gender: Male
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 205 lbs.
Eyes: Dark Brown
Hair: Copper Blonde
Class/Occupation: Mage/Fighter, Secretary-General of the SKC Tax Collection Service
Nobility: Of Low Birth
Starting Morality: Neutral
Faction: Sovereign Kingdom of Cruinthe
Languages: Cruic
Appearance: He's a rather large brute with military-cut, copper-colored hair. His face, no one would really call "attractive" by any means, but it's too muscular to be properly ugly. His nose has been broken several times. His expression is, generally, hardened into a constant look of disapproval. He rarely smiles. As for the rest of him, well, he's just pretty big and intimidating, and there's just something... cold about him. He doesn't look very interesting, and doesn't stand out at all.
Personality: Very Pragmatic. If something can be done more efficiently, he does it that way. He finds what is necessary and eliminates the rest. He's learned how to properly cut corners, and does so judiciously. He does not find any joy in silly things like love. Love is weakness, and what is weak will be destroyed.
He knows that the greatest injustice in the world is inequality, and plans on using his position as a "success story" to reveal that inequality to both the rich and poor.
Do not cross him. He will not hesitate to make your life miserable. The "Individual" is of no consequence to him--it's the message, and people are simply a means to an end. His end is, in his judgment, good--so why trouble about how he gets there?
History:
He was born to two low-birth laborers in the ghetto of Old Sorath. His parents had moved from sharecropping on a Lord's land to the city, where they took jobs as civil servants for the local SKC command. They sent him to an SKC school, where he learned the basics leading to sorcery; out of school, he worked by the docks, cleaving fish-heads.
He was big enough that no-one bullied him at school, and quiet enough no-one bullied him at work. His classmates were weak, and his peers at work were stupid. No one at school worked; no one at work went to school. He didn't feel better than them--he knew he was better than them. He excelled at everything he did, because he kept his head down at work and kept his hands down at school.
He was inducted into the SKC's service of sorcery after school, and worked hard. He knew that one could have a comfortable and efficient life doing only what was necessary, and nothing more. His work appeased his superiors, but did not make him a target. They sent him to work as a Ritgr in a mage unit, defending some of the larger holds against upjumped rebels.
Brave knights would get themselves killed with their egos. He knew better. Those who kept their heads down would survive, they would win, and they could use their experience to win the next battle more efficiently. He helped keep his mage unit at one of the lowest mortality rates in the SKC's mage-lending service; they would preserve their energy as the battle went on, adjusting for enemy surges, never wasting precious magic supply on mere cover fire. He recognized that magic was much more powerful than swords or arrows.
The enemies would lose. They were egos, trying to prove themselves. They would all die. His superiors recognized his unit's achievements, and when asking why they had succeeded, they unanimously voted that Jakob was their reason for being so efficient. They were all promoted to a special police force; he would remember them as some of his only friends. Not because he particularly cared for their personalities, no--because they could follow subtle orders and recognize who had given them.
After some time in the police force creating a more efficient policing program, he asked to take position as one of the Kingdom's tax collectors. He found that the police and military had suffered from a lack of funding, and believed that a better tax system would fix the other problems. His submission was accepted, and he worked as a tax collector for a few years. His innovations in efficiency were shown in his promotion of what was called the "tax collector's aura," wherein he used cold and illusory magic to improve his intimidation techniques. The citizenship had grown to see tax collectors as a supernatural force, and tax adherence began to increase.
He has recently been promoted to the head of the tax collection program, after the previous head was promoted to an assistant position in the Treasury. He still likes to collect taxes.
Why? Because he likes the feeling of power? Because he likes being the supernatural force? He loves striking fear in the hearts of the people? Yes, all that. But does he do it all in the glorious name of Julgrava, legendary lord of the Sovereign Kingdoms of Cruinthe? No, no, he'd laugh if you said that was the reason.
He wanted to ascend to a position of higher authority. He wanted the highest economic position in the state. What he'd seen at the docks was so far removed from what he'd learned in the classroom. There were two worlds here, where the rich sent their children to learn about the world of the rich, and the poor couldn't help but stay in the realm of the poor. His parents had tread a fine line by working with the government, and he'd somehow managed to ascend from poverty to wealth--but few had that chance. He wanted everyone to see the reality, to step out of the illusion that was their daily life and witness the brutal inequality.
And if he had to shove that down their throats, then dammit, they'd choke on truth.
