"We might want to pack the sleeping bags and tent. Don't want people stealing them, or animals tearing it all apart." The beautiful thing was packing it all got real simple. The bags just rolled right up and tied with straps. Crack the tent sticks in half, fold the thing end over end, then tie it all up with the straps and you had a tent to go with. It came natural to him, perk of having made the thing in the first place. A brief swipe of dirt over the fire and it was smothered. Bam, campsite disassembled. Carrying the bundles in his arms the Duke jogged a bit to catch up with Jorkahn, handing over the half-elkagr's stuff once he had. Not trained in the arts of finding things while lost in the woods the Duke started gazing around as they walked. He was trying his best to at least find anything worthwhile amidst the brush, shrubbery, and dirt, although that proved hard without at least a little direction. "I doubt we'd find tracks, but we want subtle signs right? Things like...I don't know, hunting remains or burned out campfires?"

Jorkahn nodded as he looked for signs and Tyr spoke. After a moment he could hear the sounds of the Duke rifling through the bags and tents. They went down pretty quickly, the boy would think that his companion had gone camping before if he hadn't seen the man make the previously mentioned items in front of him. Alas no tracks were found, however he did happen upon some ripe dragonfruit. How fortuitous. The duo had just had a conversation a few minutes prior about finding food, it seemed that they would be set for a while. When Tyr came up beside him, the young warrior handed the larger man half of the spoils, three in this case. Slinging the tent over his shoulder and stuffing the sleeping roll in his bag the boy spoke. "Well at least we don't have to worry about food for a while." He smiled as he said this before turning back to the world around him. Maybe they needed to go further into the valley before finding any signs? Or maybe he wasn't looking hard enough, or his experience in hunting was too basic to find signs of the skaldi? "Hmm."Instead of making excuses he should try looking again for traces of their nomad. "Correct. Really, we are looking for anything that indicates something moved through or lives in the area. Preferably something big and scaly. We are fortunate that large creatures are much easier to track than smaller ones. Though it is an intelligent being, so perhaps it is trying to stay hidden?" Walking a bit further down the valley Jorkahn looked around again, this time with Tyr's help. For never having gone hunting before the man sure was surprisingly helpful. The boy wondered if he was a natural at everything he tried?

"If it's trying to stay hidden then this will be an interesting test of our cunning. Perhaps finding evidence of recently hunted prey animals would help." Thinking backwards was a strange concept. What evidence did one leave of where they had been? If you were trying to hide yourself how would you do it? Was there something you couldn't avoid and could they find it with their poking around? "After this adventure I might have to start doing some hunting of my own. It would be a useful experience, learning how other things think and act. Potentially dangerous though. I've heard tales of some...interesting creatures hiding out in the wilderness." Searching for evidence of life, Tyr pointed out whatever he found in an effort to help the lad lead them towards their potential Skaldi friend.

Jorkahn was timid and quiet. His patience would seem almost limitless to those he didn't know, but around those he trusted his mannerisms became more lax. The boy let out a loud, frustrated sigh. He had patience for many things, not one of them including his own failure. When he was directly to blame for something going wrong, or when he was entrusted with a task that he could not follow through on because of his own lack of what was required, it frustrated him greatly. "No Skaldi." It was but a whisper under his breath, easily mistaken as a gust through the trees. It was heavily laced with impatience, however. There were plenty of signs of other wild life, some that they could eat, but nothing they were looking for. "Yes, but if the creature were trying to hide, I doubt it would leave such blatant evidence of it being here. Not unless it was taken by surprise. I would be a bit worried if that were the case." They walked. "Sometimes man is but the least of your worries in a place like this." The boy gave Tyr a bit of an eerie smile before laughing to betray his jest. It turned his mind away from his frustration and helped him concentrate better. "The knowledge is worth the danger in the long run. Just as you learn to capitalize on your prey's negligence you learn to compensate for your own. And sometimes, you just need to eat!" Another smile before the half breed turned and stood completely still. He took a deep breath in through his nose in an attempt to take in any smell he could. At the same time he attempted to listen to any sound out of the ordinary and look for any stick, branch, or patch of grass that looked tread upon. Tracking was about using all of your senses as efficiently as possible in order to find your prey. Keeping a level head helped too, but he was working on that.

Hark! Some footprints! They continued on towards the northeast. They were implanted in some hard caked mud. But based on the direction and depth of the foot prints, as well as the reptilian outline, the Skaldi was between eight and ten feet tall, saurian, and over six hundred pounds. Likely the Skaldi took this path on return trips from somewhere only. There were no footprints heading in the opposite direction. They had found their person of interest at last. Only after a great deal of time spent searching.

A smile adorned the boy's face as his eyes passed over a set of footprints caked into the mud. It seemed as if all they needed to do was keep moving forward to find the evidence. He was slightly perturbed at how he had missed them initially, but he didn't dwell on it too long. Jorkahn waved the Shaper over and pointed out the tracks. "He's a big one alright. Sometimes you just have to be persistent." The lad began to follow the tracks keeping an eye out for more signs of the Skaldi. Hopefully they wouldn't have to search for much longer now that they had found signs. Now that he thought about it he hoped it was the skaldi they were looking for, but why wouldn't it be? Tyr would likely know better than him if Skaldi frequented this area, but even being as inexperienced as he was the half breed doubted there were many or any others around. "Did you get a description of the Hermit? Or were you just told his location?"

Tyr came over to inspect the footprint and smiled broadly at the find. They were indeed, hopefully, on the right track. Granted this could just be some random other Saurian that might break them in half and feast on their bones, or something similarly gruesome, but it was at least a start. Plus between the two of them there was a decent chance they might win that fight. "I was told he was old, a hermit, and a Saurian. His name is Nock'mantool, or something similar, and to bring raw flesh." That was about what he remembered from Na'ka's explanation of it. Then again he hadn't really been told that much more. It was a vague description to go off of, but here they had their first solid track to go off of. "Luckily for us I have that raw flesh. Let us hope we can find him quickly enough that it is still good."

As the pair continued their search they came across more footprints, and some snapped twigs heading in the same direction they had been going in. About a mile later the ground became much steeper, almost to a thirty degree angle. They were already in the highlands to begin with, but the valley floor for the Mallon River had spared them thus far. The ground was getting rockier, and plants were becoming few and far between. The trail would end suddenly on a rocky outcrop that headed towards the cliffs on the western side of the valley.

"Hmm." The boy responded quietly to Tyr's words. The path before them was becoming harder to traverse and a bit more treacherous. Likewise it was becoming harder to track their quarry. From the tracks they found in the mud not too long ago the boy could be reasonably certain they were tracking a Saurian. He didn't know much else other than it was big, likely full grown at the least. Dangerous if it wasn't friendly. "I think we are following a Saurian at this point, but I could be wrong." Eventually they reached a rocky outcrop and, just as suddenly as the trail ended, the half breed stopped in his tracks. A frown adorned his face and he turned back to his companion. "The signs have faded, but we should be able to pick it up again." That being said the young warrior went back to searching for signs of the Skaldi. It would likely be a bit more difficult in this terrain, but he was certain with enough perseverance and a bit of luck they would soon be on their way.

The rougher ground wasn't going to be good if they got into a scrape. While it was still fairly easy to keep walking along the trail they were barely finding, if they had to run Tyr would be somewhat screwed. Not that he couldn't run or anything, it was more that running along rocky ground, at a somewhat steep incline, while carrying a bunch of stuff was difficult. Hurrah for gravity causing balance issues! "Well we're following something. We'll have a story to tell either way when we find it." Granted what they found didn't outright kill them and suck the marrow from their bones, or whatever it was mountain creatures did with the random travelers it happened upon. Driving the thought from his mind, Tyr went about glancing at every rock for some sort of clue. He might not have the faintest clue of how to hunt something up, but he was getting incredibly familiar with his land.

The pair had lost the trail there on the rocks. Skaldi were large and had large strides. The one they were looking for was supposedly very old, thereby also much larger than your average skaldi. That would make it very likely that this one could bound from rock to rock and avoid stepping in the dirt between those rocks, until finally the crags and cliffs of the Darthaks would take over and the mountains would arrive. This area would be difficult to find him in.

He had lost the trail again. A loud sigh escaped his lips which had taken on another frown. Things were getting difficult. From what he could tell so far, the Skaldi wasn't going out of it's way to hide his tracks, it was just difficult to determine the tracks of such a large, bipedal creature. The length of it's stride, the possibility it could be jumping, and the roughness of the terrain were big factors in how difficult this was. Jorkahn scratched the back of his head in a sign of minor frustration and took a deep breath. He slowed to a crawl and began to search for the continuation of the Skaldi's trail. "Let's hope that story proves to be a long one." The boy thought back to his previous hunts and searched through his mind for things from them that may help him now. Too bad he had never hunted in such rocky terrain, there wasn't much he could take from his past experiences. After a moment of thought he spoke again, "Search on the tops of rocks, ones that could be used for foot holds. Keep in mind the creature is much larger than us and paths that look treacherous for us may be easily accessible to it.
Be sure to be aware of your own footing, too. Wouldn't be a very good story if it ended before it could begin." The warrior threw back a bit of a morbid smile at his companion, he hoped the man realized he was joking.

"A long one it shall be! Full of adventure, combat, glory, and treasure. Why, we'll have the envy of every traveling pair from here to the Bone Wastes!" Tyr had no doubt the pair could overcome almost any challenge they were met with, during the daytime and in the open. Which just so happened to be exactly where they were! In a dark tunnel? Well, things would get interesting then. He took the lad's advice about the rocks and started standing on various sturdy rocks, trying to judge where he might go if he were in the Saurian's position. A difficult prospect, trying to imagine how a much bigger being might naturally utilize their motions, but an interesting one. Could be useful when designing future armor, envisioning more than the cover and more of what was being covered. If you know how something might be used you can simplify that process yes? "Could I have one of those fruits please? I feel a snack would be good for the both of us about now." They'd skipped breakfast to get an early start, if they kept ignoring their stomachs it could be the death of them. Going into a fight hungry would make you sluggish. Why make life harder? The world made it hard enough.
