" You offer a mean of control." One individual was who she could think directly of that she desired control over. The one man, well other than Jonathan here, that could threaten her rule and life. Much more than that, it was a want for revenge. A need to feel safe again, as the murder of her guards festered further in her mind the more Guinevere needed to do something about it. She needed to find him, then interrogate him for what he knew. Perhaps this man could be learned, dark magic she had certianly heard could be used to achieve such means. Surely delving into a man's mind, and killing him. " I find myself without a mentor." She took his words as hint to move on in her deal making. Now was either the time to plunge a knife into him, or make a deal. Guinevere saw more of a potential in not soaking her hands in blood, there was too much of that lately. Perhaps test him first. See if she could be finally taught was she lusted to learn. " Many benefits can be given to my teacher." In a situation that she wanted to win, she would let the other party decide what their spoils were. To a logical stand point anyway. It was always easier knowing what the baseline of your opponent wanted.

Jonathon listened in on what she was saying, what she proposed, if it was anything like how it sounded to him right now, could be incredibly beneficial to him. The only issue was that he knew nothing at all about this woman, how was he supposed to trust her to not kill him soon as his usefulness ran out or as soon as he did one thing that she didn't like. She was in a position of power in society obviously and while he also was, it didn't seem to be quite as high up as she was which irked him. He needed to retain control in some way if they were going to enter into this agreement, although he had absolutely no idea how he would do so considering she seemed to hold the cards right now.
It seemed as though the best idea right now would just be to go along with it and bide his time, wait for a chance to wrest control from her hands, it occurred to him that it was in her best interests at least to not harm him until the work was done, otherwise she'd never learn, so he at least knew that he was safe until that point.
The benefits though he could make use of up until that point, they could be rather good to have and when it came for his time to grab control he could use these to his advantage, a bit more digging was required though before he could give a solid answer. "And what kind of benefits would this teacher get? Assuming you could find one, i hear teachers of the Dark Arts are in short supply." She needed him if she wanted to learn, there weren't exactly many people who could teach her.

" Gold, if that is what you desire." It was a rather dear way to start off the enticing things she could offer him. " Power perhaps. I can have quite a large network of influence when I need it." More things to offer, and perhaps this felt dull because she did not know what he wished. Deals usually fell short when she did not know what the other side wanted. In her profession, knowing what the other wanted was simple. It was usually at the front of the deal, and what she wanted didn't play much into the deal making. But such was the life of a noble, in control of almost the entire chess board. " If it was you, what would you want?" Now, that should clear things up quite nicely. Guinevere liked open deals, it made coming at an agreement much easier. She didn't like this pointless debating, it wasn't fun like the intrigues and careful games of the court. This was too barbaric.

Jonathon listened to her offers, she offered money and power, exactly what he had been expecting as she didn't particularly seem to have anything else that she could offer him. She may be the lady-mayor of a city but still unless she had some artifact of great importance in her care or some sort of tome that she herself couldn't utilise, then she didn't really have all that much to offer him other than what he'd already expected.
The network of influence that she claimed to have could be put to use, he could think of many ways that he could utilise this, surely if she had that much influence then she could get her hands on certain items for him, maybe a few items here and there. She could also provide him with information should it be required of course, he could think of many things that he needed to know that could be within his reach with this offer.
It seems that she had pretty much left it open to his demands, overall though he just wanted power, not the power to influence people or anything, pure personal power which could only as far as he knew be achieved by work. She would provide him with a chance to practice which was a rather good deal for him, but anything else he could get out of this agreement he would. "Gold would be nice obviously, a man is always in need of gold to get by." He wouldn't go so far as to name an incredible sum but obviously for something such as this he hoped they were on the same page that it'd be a decent sum.
"Access to an amount of your influence and power would also be appreciated obviously, maybe if I were to request some items from you every now and then or use a small amount of your influence to help with a task if the situation dictates." He took a few moments to pause before he made his last request, it was a big one. "Above all though, a seat on your council, a position as an advisor, something similar where we can both make use of the other. I think this would go a lot smoother if neither of us were always watching for daggers in the dark. I understand I have asked a lot, and I am open for negotiation, but let's not stray to far."

Money- Blah. Power- whatever. Trinkets were easy. The advisory position was something that made the Mayor raise an eyebrow. Did he even have what it took to run a city? By his looks and overall demeanor he didn't appear to possess such an inclination. The ones that did usually already went for the position, and did not wait for others to raise them. They wormed their way into power, or left themselves in a place to be raised. Not that she thought the idea of hero wasn't one that sometimes worked, but a soldier did not have as much luck commanding simple people. " I have One hundred and Fifty Ritz, for the price of your silence and a parting gift." Was she going to give up all the gold she could carry? No. That was foolish. It was a hefty sum for nothing, if he ended up not teaching her of much. But it was enough to hopefully keep him interested in not bothering her. " Now, I would need an adviser that is up to the task. I'll entertain the thought, but I need proof first that you can do anything for me." Guinevere moved closer to the man, edging close to his personal space.

One hundred and Fifty Ritz, definitely a sum worth considering, and if it was only as a parting gift and something to buy his silence then it quite simply meant that he'd got this money for free. Free money was always useful, he needed it if he was honest due to the fact that he had barely any money to his name currently, anything he could get would help as even if it wasn't his main concern it was a concern. There was precious little you could do if you didn't have money, and this money would be very helpful. "The Ritz is appreciated , an ample price for my silence"
The advisory role seemed to be a topic that would require further discussion, but it would be worth it, he needed that role to make sure that she wouldn't just bump him off as soon as they were done, he would need to make sure he couldn't just be removed at a whim and gaining some sort of position with her would be a way to go about that rather easily. It would also give him certain benefits which he was sure could be useful later.
She had moved closer, he was waiting for the knife between the ribs, she was coming rather close to him, he was unsure why exactly she felt as if she needed to be so close, was she planning to put a knife into him before their business arrangement had even come into effect, that wouldn't benefit either of them. He tried to cover up his confusion through speaking, "I'm fairly sure that I'm up to the task, I can provide solid advice and watch your back, would it not be a good idea to have a licensed mage to help you with your tasks? Considering even once I have taught you your magic cannot be used in public, both because of the nature of it and because of your lack of a license."

" Ahh, a personal adviser role is what you seek." This was turning exactly into the deal her parents would have preformed. Maybe not so much of an adviser, but as the new nanny, babysitter or teacher. Whatever excuse was deemed appropriate. This had played out many times before, and she knew this man had no clue the nest he was stepping into. Guinevere was a little surprised in how quick her mind could change in not wanting another teacher, but maybe this time it could be different. He didn't need to be killed, or he could be silenced in another way. Or perhaps the mage coming after her, would in turn kill him. Two birds, one stone. Or it was a way this could play out in her favor. " It sounds like a fair deal. Though, I am leaving a lot in trust to you." Would he attempt to counter? Her mind raced over the ideas if the man was just playing with her. She had yet to use any magic, and perhaps she could easily offset this as a trick. That was easy. " What can you give me now?"

So it seemed that they had reached a sort of understanding, more along the lines of the fact that they were both at least on the same page now in terms of what exactly he wanted in exchange for this. Although if he was honest he had been hoping that part of the process would have gone a lot faster. If anything it had gone rather slow, it had taken time for her to understand him and for him to even partially understand her. The fact that they were still using him and her showed the fact that their names were still unknown to the other which hampered the process, although not by much for now.
She was still close to him, taking a step back could signal weakness to her, this could be a dominance play of sort, although why exactly she would seek dominance so early on in their encounter was beyond him. Looking weak could in fact help him slightly, if she thought of him as weaker than he was then it could be advantageous in the future. Jonathon took a small step back, keeping his composure whilst he once again opened the gap between them back to the original distance.
"Now? How much time do you have exactly is the question? I could probably help you with some of the theory if you desire although I don't know if we could actually get to a practical stage." Jonathon said, his mind running through, if he taught her the practical aspects now then she could quite easily just go and he'd never hear from her again, but if he gave her the theory with a few bits left out of it she should be incapable of replicating what he did but it would give her a hunger and hopefully she'd want more. He wasn't particularly choosy in who he taught or what he taught them so long as the deal was advantageous for him, he had no desire to hoard knowledge.
"To begin with, at it's very basic the particular type of magic that I use requires me not to draw from the energy that other mages use, but rather I drain my very vitality in order to perform my spells, it is a lot more dangerous but means that a more diverse range of magics I can do and the magics that I perform are generally stronger than their regular counterparts. Are you prepared for that?"

" I don't have much time, sunrise at best. I am expected back." Well, if Tom had not already alerted the city of Fordeth to her disappearance. Draining his vitality? Diverse ranges? That was all just a little confusing for her. Guinevere was not sure about what the man quite meant by his words. Was she ready? She did not know what she was readying for. She knew her fundamental problem, so for now she would nod and rephrase her desires. " I have one problem, I understand the theory of magic well. But I cannot get things to materialize. As you experienced, I can shock others by mistake, and recognize that it is lightning. But I cannot get it to form at my will. I have always struggled." Taking a step back after he did, because she felt she won that short duel she tried to demonstrate. Guinevere focused on her hand, even trying to bring forth the smallest bit of magical lightning into her palm. The ball sputtered into nothing a second after it had been summoned. Guinevere hoped he would understand what her problem was. " If you can teach me to make it real, I will reward you with much." This was a moment of vulnerability for the woman. She always felt so stupid not being able to summon the magic at her will. It was always a wild guess to whether or not it would work.

So it seemed her problem was much more specific, she had all of the requirements to perform magic, just she lacked a way to channel what magic she possessed into a physical form that she would have control over. Her particular problem wasn't in fact something related to Dark Arts, more just magecraft in general and could have been fixed by anyone. It just happened that he had been the first one who she'd found that she could through some means get to teach her.
Jonathon mulled this thought for a few moments, "Your problem is actually rather easily solved and is much simpler than what I was about to go into, I was going into specifics whereas you need the basics." Sunrise was still several hours away yet he was unsure how quick she would be to learn exactly, but he could give it a start.
"Alright this is going to sound incredibly stupid to begin with, but we have a few hours till sunrise so with that time I could begin to give you a very basic idea of what to do, no promises though it depends on how fast you can learn."
Jonathon took in a deep breath, reaching into himself and feeling the now familiar drop in strength, one which he was now prepared for, then used his strength to summon some shadows to him, forming them not into an actual form but leaving them swirling around his feet, "It's quite simply, you have to first feel what you are trying to control, you have to know what it is and then think of what it'll be when you materialise it."

He could feel the shadows rolling about him, like an old friend almost, although they were obviously not battle magic worthy, he enjoyed manipulating them how he did, it was challenging and made him think a lot more than the blood manipulation that he currently practised.
"For me it is rather easy as I have done it a lot, but take as much time as you need, don't rush it, like anything patience is key. Find your energy inside of you, form it into the lightning, concentrate on what you want it to become, and when you are ready push it out of your body through your hand. Also, hold your hand away from you, lightning burns suck."

" I just think it?" She had heard this several times. Guinevere was sometimes too uptight for her magic to worry with any reliability. Well, some of her teachers had said it in much more colorful language. She thought just thinking it into existence was too easy, and there rested half of her problem. She liked absolutes, amd magic was just not one of those absolute things. It was variable, creative... not sure, and resting in games. It just was, without any real reason. Holding out her hand just a bit further as instructed she began to concentrate. Lightning was fast, it struck and then it was done. Leaving behind a rip in the air that only closed with a boom, uncaring to witness the devastation it left behind. Guinevere's emotions were a lot like that, after snapping quickly the outburst was done. She wasn't like fire that burned and embered in anger, she moved swiftly and with purpose, with one goal. So the Lady tried, and the ball just sputtered out again. Guinevere gave a heavy sigh, she was not patient either. Far from it. " Is there any way to make it work now?" Speaking just a little more out of frustration. She couldn't help but to blush in feeling foolish. A mage that could not summon magic, it was ridiculous.

She was impatient, she had failed again and was not enjoying this fact at all, but if she wanted to accomplish anything then it would certainly require time and patience, although seeing as she only wanted to know the basics it wouldn't take that long, so long as she tried by the time they parted she could achieve a basic grasp of it.
"You are a very structured person, you enjoy control and don't like the idea that you can't control this, it's getting in your way, cast that aside and focus on the task at hand." Jonathon said to her, in a calm almost soothing tone, he would get nowhere with this by going in aggressively or by despairing at her lack of success. He was teaching her in the almost opposite way to how he was taught, it was a rather interesting thing to consider when he did.
Jonathon felt a tendril of his power, weaved it together into the solid barrier that he desired and attempted to create it in front of him how he wanted it.

He had tried, and failed, the barrier flickered in for a second and then dissapeared. "See, even someone who has practised and been trained in magic their whole life fails, don't let fails get you down you just have to carry on through them." Obviously it was in his best interests to try and keep her positive towards him so he would carry on trying to be as nice as he could.

" You don't understand, I have no room to be wrong." This was a statement, nothing more and nothing less. Ruling meant nothing was a mistake, and every little action was structured. It was meant to happen, even if it looked like a mistake. Walking close to him might have seemed just a friendlier move, but it was about dominance. Even in admitting a weakness was a tactical move, she was seeing a little more into his mind. Whether or not he was trying to let her do so. Though, seeing him react so kindly was a surprise. She had expected mocking from the man. Something in his demeanor just didn't shout the kind-hearted teacher. Pulling in a deep breath, she thought about the lightning again. It was an easy task, she rather liked the flow of that element. She would try it again. It sputtered yet again, and she stomped. Throwing her own mini tantrum, thought it was far more kept inside of her head. Would relaxing really help her do this? This was stupid. She was stupid. Even the patience his mental state had shown for her made her that much more angry. So, he was trying to be the nice guy. That was frustrating.

"You have no room to be wrong? Then how will you learn? Mistakes are a common part of the learning process."
Jonathon hid his annoyance, it was understandable if she was trying to jump off a cliff that there was no room to be wrong, because being wrong would mean dying. But in something like this where there was no real effect of being wrong, was there really any harm in it. She was in a place where no one other than him could really see her failures anyway so why did it bother her?
If she wanted to get better then she would need to come to terms with failure, even with him not every casting that he performed went right, he failed sometimes, he was only a Half-Elkagr after all, he wasn't a god, even if one day he would love to be.
"No one can see you here other than me, it is fine it is in my best interests to conceal what happened here anyway so I will be the only one that will know when you fail right now, be free in that knowledge at least. You will not learn if you don't try, and each time you try there is a chance of failure."
Jonathon decided he should also try again, having failed last time, maybe it would help her also if he gave a practical example, that assuming of course that he could manage it.
Jonathon twisted the wisp of power and tried to form it once again into a barrier.

I'll be wrong when I'm dead. The Lady only gave the man a sigh, she would hold her tongue about what she truly wished to speak. Guinevere did not have room to be wrong, wrong decisions meant at least changing somebodies life and sometimes doing wrong meant a persons death.
The half-elkagr focused. Letting the still of the night try and calm her thoughts. The slight breeze wiping through the blade of grass, grass that tickled the leather of her boots. This was meant to be something simple, and she might as well try being wrong about it, even just for a moment. It was okay after all, conjuring some bit of lightning wasn't going to effect another. It meant nothing really, nothing but a small show. With but one man as her witness. A man that did not yet know her name, of where she was from. Guinevere was still free from consequence, at least for now she was. The ball just sputtered again, well this being wrong thing sucked.
An unfamiliar feeling was beginning to overtake her mind. Guin was not used to feeling in the least insecure about herself. She was always so sure, so steady in what she did. Magic didn't want that of her, magic didn't want her.
Or so she felt.
So then why grant her the power to read minds?
What did that gain her?
