Tyr figured it was time to step things down. It seemed like Jorkahn was getting increasingly frustrated over time, and it was lowering his patience for trying the next time. Stepping into his side room briefly, Tyr retrieved a candle sitting in a carved wooden holder. He sat it on the table next to Jorkahn and moved back to the forge to keep his own work going. The lad would need gloves too, might as well get started on this.
"Light the candle. There's forge fire to draw on, it should be easy. Just light it. Prove to yourself you can do this magic period, then work on something harder with the knowledge that it is indeed possible." Honestly lighting a candle seemed pretty damn simple. Something that should be almost automatic really, the thing was made for it, it wasn't really warping reality to do it, you just needed to make it happen. Using the fire that was already there should make it even easier.
The gloves, gauntlets really since Tyr tended to armor damn near everything he made, were a fairly simple design he'd refined after making it a few times. Leather gloves, iron plates everywhere, simple and sleek.
Plate gauntlets from 3 iron and 1 leather. Simple (30) + K (20) + Knowledge (Iron M/Tan II/Armor III=45) + Forge (5) + Cruinthian (5)= DC 105 JyEnS4AH Success. Masterwork check, DC 55. Three degrees possible.
Two degrees earned. Superior Plate Gauntlets (3I1L): 35 DR, Req 14 Str/7 A/7K
The gauntlets came out fantastically. Now it was just up to Jorkahn to prove his own magic and they could move on with things.

It was hard not to look childish when you had the emotional control of one. Maybe this was one of the reasons people seemed to dislike elves? They could be volatile and hard to predict emotionally. Still, he should be proud of what he was, after all he had to live with it.
As the boy was huffing quietly to himself in an attempt to calm down Tyr had moved into the next room and, when he returned, brought a candle with him. The craftsman simply placed it upon the table next to the mixed breed and returned to his work. He made a comment and Jorkahn sighed. He had tried three times, each time feeling like he was farther away from succeeding than the last. Normally the youth would have given up by now when it came to his magical studies, but he decided to try again. After all, if it really were so easy as the other man had said the only thing he had to worry about was hurting his pride even further.
Without really thinking about it the Wealddir gave a wave of his hand and suddenly a puff of fire moved from the forge. In the next instant the wick he was staring at intently burst into flame causing the kid to start and fall from where he was seated. He quickly regained his bearings and stood up, looking at the candle, he stood aghast. It took him a while to register what had just happened. His nonchalant look of frustration had gone from amazement to utter joy in the span of a few seconds.
"I... I-I-I... I did it," The boy laughed and threw his hands into the air. "I can actually cast magic! Why had I never thought of trying something so simple first?!" He suddenly realized his exuberance and his relatively white skin turned a rather crimson shade of red. He instantly sat down and brought up his hood to hide his face. After he had regained his composure he looked at Tyr.
"Thank you for believing in me."
Okay you crazy sap, try not to scare him off.

As Tyr finished his work the flare up of a candle caught his eye. Good, the little mage that could had succeeded in his attempts.
"People like to make things a great deal more complicated than they need to be." His smile creeped the slightest bit wider at the thought, he had suggested calling the flame out of the forge in the first place. No one was immune to thinking their way was best. "But at least we know you can do it now. Feel free to practice with the forge fire again, armed with the confidence that you are indeed a mage." It probably wouldn't be any easier than it had been, but at least he wouldn't get frustrated not knowing. Now it would just be a matter of practicing.
The Duke was done with his smithing for the day though, he'd made all he intended to for a while. All he had left now was to get matters with Jorkahn settled and go relax for the rest of the evening before sleeping the night away. He set his tools up and briefly cleaned the work tables of whatever scraps were laying out before taking a seat near the forge to watch the lad go at the fire.
"Tomorrow I intend to take a small trip. North of here there's a valley by the river, and somewhere in that valley is a Skaldi who I need to see to try and learn Sissak. The first favor I'd like to ask of you is to accompany me on this trip. What do you say?"

The boy nodded his head in agreement, though he hadn't truly come to terms with that yet. He had been surprisingly sheltered most of his life. Actually, sheltered was a bad word, as he didn't spend a whole lot of time at home. A better word would be alone. He had seen the world and traveled quite a bit, he just didn't interact with many others outside of his family. At what may as well have been Tyr's permission to keep practicing the boy stood up and took a similar stance to the last time he had tried and failed. Taking one good look at the fire he began to call up the energy that he had felt when the candle spontaneously combust.
"Oh, I would be happy to! It's the least I could do considering how much you have helped me in the short time we have known each other." The boy may be antisocial but disingenuous or disloyal he was not. He would do as Tyr asked unless the man gave him a reason not to. Besides, perhaps he could learn some Sissak as well? Jorkahn was always interested in learning, may as well act on the opportunity. But, onto the magic.
The boy focused heavily on the forge and took a deep breath, this time remembering to breathe correctly as he tried to cast. This would give him a longer threshold of time to successfully pull off the spell, or so he hoped.
Attempting to practice for Channeling II and Fire I by channeling fire from a forge into the palm of his hand. S(30)+K(15)+Channeling I (5)+ Fire 0 (0)= 50 Threshhold. f_2E4MVH
Well, it seemed like once again the spell was unsuccessful. That was disappointing. Then again, the lad could only help but laugh, he was still too happy with knowing that he actually could cast magic, the only thing he was worried about now was if he could only cast house magic. Then again, to his limited knowledge, that wasn't really a possibility. He could feel that if he practiced he would be able to do more.
So for now he would keep practicing, after a small break, and as long as Tyr didn't mind.

"Excellent, it's all settled then." Tyr stood up from his seat and pulled his blacksmith's apron off. He wiped his hands clean with the middle bit then hung it up near the forge to await the next person who might need it. Tyr held a hand out for a brief shake, characteristic smile wide on his face. "You can spend the night in the room there, I'll be just up the road in the manor house. I'll be by in the morning to get some things from the shop and we'll head out."
With his parting words said Tyr would head for the main door. It'd been a long time since he'd slept somewhere other than the Artificery, leaving the place left him with a strange feeling. This was his home, where he belonged. At least for one night though he could lend it to someone in need. Later they could figure out a more permanent situation for Jorkahn, if he stuck around town that was. Stopping at the double doors, he peered back at the forge fire a moment.
"The fire should burn down in a while, don't worry about taking care of it. You're free to practice as long as you like. If you wish to leave at any time just unlock the doors and go." With a wave, the Duke stepped outside and produced an iron key hanging around his neck. It fit cleanly into the handle of the right door, and when turned there was a heavy clunking sound of metal. The doors were fitted with opposing sets of latches, when the right ones turned they jutted out and the left ones turned over them in return. Small teeth caught on each latch and the doors were held firmly shut. It was a simple design, and very easy to pick if you had something that wouldn't snap when imparting the required force. Jorkahn would find a knob on the inside of the doors that would open it if he needed.
Whistling lightly as he went, Tyr began the walk through town that led to 'his' manor. Wouldn't it surprise the hell out of the staff when he showed up for the first time in months?

Tyr made a concluding exclamation and came over to shake the boy's hand. Jorkahn was caught by surprise at first but that quickly left his face and was replaced with a somewhat meek smile. He took the man's hand and shook it. It was amazing how things could work out if you just had the courage to talk to people. "I can't thank you enough for your hospitality. I will do my best to repay you ten fold."
Jorkahn was just about to turn back to the fire to practice one more time when the craftsman stopped to speak again. The lad nodded. "I think I will practice until I get tired, I don't believe I could fall asleep at this point." With that the Duke of Mardok was gone, headed to where ever it was he planned to sleep. The boy wondered for a moment how large a Duke's house could be. He was in charge of an entire county, surely it would be bigger than his father's? Then again, his father was rather wealthy.
There was too much practicing that needed doing to dwell very long on that thought. The fledgling mage took up his stance yet again and willed the energy from within to heed his wishes.

Jorkahn somewhat expected nothing to happen again this time around, and because of that he hadn't even noticed the plume of fire dancing in the palms of his hands. He stood there, mouth agape, simply gawking at the thing. Eventually a large smile adorned his face and he snuffed the flame only to continue on with renewed vigor. He would continue to practice for a few more hours before attempting to fall asleep once again.
Today had been a good day, even if it was emotionally taxing.
THE END AND STUFF!
