After fairly careful examination of the creature Kreans had concluded he didn't have a clue what it was, but he felt as though next time he should encounter one he could be more effective at fighting it now that he had seen more of it's body without the distraction of vines whipping at his face. It was unfortunate that he couldn't put a name to the beast, the heavy dragonfruit smell that it had and still to an extent was giving off coupled by the fact that he had found a few of the snacks nearby lent to him deciding to just call it a Dragonfruit monster for now. However inaccurate it was it would work so that he could place a name to the plant creature if he were to come across one again.
The five found Dragonfruit quickly disappeared into his toothy maw, their juices helping to replenish and revitalise after what had been a fairly brief but intense fight, he'd expended energy he knew needed replenishing. After the fruits came the two chunks of cooked meat from his bag that filled him up sufficiently for Kreans to continue on with his tasks. To begin with even that brief combat with the piticful creature had brought an important point to his mind, for whatever reason it seemed that while making the Skaldi's armour the Lord had forgotten a helmet of some sort leaving his face wide open to attacks, something the Dragonfruit monster had seemed to capitalise on.
Currently he didn't have enough material to make himself a helmet, the few bones and pieces of leather he had in his bag and around his makeshift camp wouldn't be able to form something big enough to fit over his head and provide adequate protection from attacks so he would have to hunt himself some more materials to work with.

It was likely that his fight with the Dragonfruit monster had scared off al of the local wildlife, or at least that was what the Skaldi would have thought before he came across some perfectly obvious Boar tracks in the grass around him. Clear as day and easy to follow, almost like a gift from nature to the Skaldi who was in need, so of course he followed said tracks expecting to find a boar at the end of them. What he was not expecting was for the tracks to just continue onwards far further than he was willing to go from his campsite. They continued further than he could see and he was unwilling to leave his few possessions unattended nor leave the duchy until he'd seen the Lord in the morning to get his blessing before going on to complete the task he'd been assigned.
Having judged the boar too far for him to effectively manage Kreans began from his firepit once again, making slowly expanding circles outwards from that central point until he caught some sort of track or trail of an animal that he could hunt instead, hopefully one far nearer and with less willingness to run miles away.

Once all was done and the boars skin and bones were piled with the rest of the bits he had gathered, Kreans took two lengths of wood from the floor and cut a notch in each before placing them over the fire with a third stretched between them as a makeshift spit. Several of the pices of boar meat were held on this spit while the rest were put on skewers that he dug into the ground around the outside of the fire. The wonderful aroma of cooking meat quickly filled his little campcircle and the SKaldi inhaled it deeply, his mouth watering and his body wanting some of the meat eventhough he had only just eaten.

It was all idyllic and relaxing until the meat started to burn, the makeshift spit collapsed into the fire along with the majority of the meat and all it's juices that caused the fire to surge and the pieces around the outside to develop a wonderfully cirpsy coating of ash while burning up themselves. Kreans let out a snarl that could likely be heard from Mardok as he reached in to try and save what meat he could, nearly burning himself several times in the process and having nothing to show for it in the end anyway.·····

After having nearly all of his meat supplies burn up in front of him the Skaldi was quite understandably in a terrible mood, a few swift kicks were aimed at the corpse of the Dragonfruit monster that he'd dragged over nearer to his fire before he picked it up and launched it in anger, making a mockery of it's death and daring another one of the creatures to try and come against him now so that he could release his frustration.
With the loss of this newly gained meat he now only had three pieces of uncooked meat left, in the bottom of his pack wrapped in leaves and likely needing to be cooked at some fairly close point in time. The care with which he brought out those three final morsels was completely at odds with his hulking armoured form and probably would have made a human laugh had they believed they could escape afterwards. Sticks were selected once again, each one sturdy enough to not break and long enough that he could keep control of them from far enough away to not burn himself, the utmost care was going to be taken that these pieces of meat made it out of the fire.
With one skewer in each hand and the third with his tail wrapped firmly about it and tied on with some rope from his pack Kreans set to attempting to cook his last store of meat, his eyes darting between each piece almost frantically to ensure that each was well cared for as he tried to cook it in the fire.

Two of the pieces of meat unfortunately didn't survive the process. Whether he'd held them too close or not turned them enough each by the end was burnt beyond eating, only one of the three having survived the process and become an actual edible piece of food. While one in three wasn't exactly good odds, for his way of cooking that was lucky, it was incredibly wasteful and he would need to learn to cook better in the future but for now he would take what he could get, and if he could get one piece that was a victory even. Once he'd given the failures to the fire he allowed his one piece to cool before wrapping it in clean leaves and placing it back at the bottom of his pack to be eaten later.··

Now that he had at least some small amount of food for himself he could look towards his other problem, the lack of protection on his head, the Dragonfruit mosnter showed it well with those vines slapping away the Skaldi's face and leaving some sore patches that now were bruising quite a bit. Kreans knew he needed some sort of helmet, with the plentiful pile of bones and leather that he now had thanks to the various animals he'd hunted he was sure that he could knock something up to at least do the job for now. Meeting the Shaper had shown him that his own crafts were nowhere near the best they could be, the works that the Lord had made him were considerably finer than his own so he would have to work hard to make that power his own until he could do such things. For now however he just needed a helmet, it didn't have to be as good as the Lord's just something to protect his head some more, besides a Skaldi's head was quite different to a human or half breeds so it was unlikely the Lord would get the shape right first time anyway.
Kreans looked at the pile of bone and leather before him, drawing a bone needle, knife and thread from one of the pouches at his belt and envisaging what he would do with each of the materials, the placement and how to get to the end result he desired. In his mind the helmet was already complete and he was wearing it, now the craftsman just had to make it a reality.

The helm fit snugly on his head, once the leather strap was fastened Kreans shook his head several times as hard as he could and made some minor adjustments to ensure that it didn't fall off. Once he was satisfied with his creation he'd once again remove it and place it on the ground next to where he sat, while it was quite comfortable there was no reason to have it on currently so he could at least enjoy the fresh air and having an uncovered face.

Seeing as how his immediate concerns had now both been filled Kreans took up the furs he'd gained from each of the animals he had hunted, he already had a cloak that he had made previously from them but now he had a surplus of the furs and not enough space to keep them in, his pack was overflowing with furs to the point where he couldn't carry anymore and there were still several bolts of it on the ground he hadn't managed to get in yet.
Instead of having to start completely from scratch it seemed simpler to add onto what he already had, add in more comfort and resistance to the cold to the cloak he already had rather than starting again. What was the point in having two cloaks anyway, as large as he was he could still only wear one at a time, having two just seemed quite pointless when you could have one better one. With bone needles and thread Kreans would take some of the extra fur that hadn't quite fit into his back and set to sewing it into the already made cloak and thickening it up.

With his food stores in the way that they were he would need to supplement them with something, better that he did it now rather than having to do it tomorrow before he headed out. If he was lucky he might come across another of those Dragonfruit monsters but he wasn't counting on it, if anything just some simple fruits he could stock his bag with would do for now so that he had something to eat before he headed out rather than eating his only piece of meat straight away in the morning.
Hunting was as always an option, but hunting down his prey and having to spend so much time on so many different attempts of cooking it would take him a long time, and with the amount of hunting and making and fighting that he had done today sleep was necessary to ensure he'd be in good enough shape tomorrow to begin his journey at full pace rather than starting already half dead. Kreans figured that gathering up a few fruits couldn't take all that long, or at least some sort of plant roots or the like that he could chew to stave off hunger, there was surely something about that could sustain him in the morning and allow him to preserve his food supplies a bit longer.
Standing up once again the Skaldi would begin searching through the plains, careful not to go too far from his camp and with his spear and shield in hand and helmet on his head, this time he was not going to be caught unawares by some creature stalking him.

It wasn't long before he had a few stalks of plant material on hand, the leaves, Dragonfruit and his other acquisition were piled up next to his pack, none of the stalks were pristine as he'd bumbled the process of cutting them slightly so that they appeared more ragged than the specimens you'd expect to find in a proper alchemy workshop. Luckily for the Skaldi this was not a proper alchemy workshop, rather it was him in the wilds with whatever he could carry on his back and his own knowledge of what to do with what he gathered up.
Admittedly he was definitely still a novice to the various herbs and ingredients that he could gather in the wild, he'd had quite a basic education in them from the herbalists at Innorsford as part of his training but beyond that hadn't really experimented with them much. Leaves he knew could be used as a base for his potions, an important if rather boring ingredient that was the foundation for a successful potion and so required for any sort of mixing to be done. Dragonfruit also he knew, they tasted good, had a good amount of nutrients to help restore strength and could be quite commonly found in the wilds. The third plant he'd found the Skaldi couldn't quite put a name to, he was sure he'd seen it before somewhere but it's name or properties he couldn't quite recall, so he'd start there for now attempting to reacquaint himself with this herb and it's power.

It took him some time to crush the stalk in a small wooden bowl and mix it with some liquid from his skin. From there he tried to see if it matched to anything he'd learned before and if it reacted as he'd been told. It took some time and a lot of frustrated lizard roars but eventually he managed to match it to one of the plants he'd learnt about before, a hallucinogen if he'd got things right and now he was glad he hadn't just gone with the eating it approach.

Other than bone and leather what really did he have, there were trees around but even with his prodigious strength he couldn't harvest their wood bare handed. There were no rocks or minerals around and even if there were there was no way for him to harvest them, he was using bone and leather because hunting was something that he was used to but there were some things that required wood and metal to work, and for them he needed a way to obtain each of those things.
An axe and a pickaxe would at least allow him to harvest those much needed materials, the issue being that he had no metals with which to make the pickaxe in the first place so that he could then get more. Bone could serve as a tool for some time, it was more brittle than iron but could be used to chop wood or mine ore for a short period of time before it broke, it was something that even still he had quite a lot of left over and should he need it he could always hunt more animals to harvest more for himself. If he could make himself a bone axe or pickaxe then he'd at least have some sort of tool that he could surely use for at least long enough for him to mine enough iron to then make himself a proper set of tools.

He'd start by getting a piece of the bone and sharpening one of the ends into a spike that he could use to crack rocks open and dig at the dirt around them. It would be a very primitive tool for sure but that was all he would have needed in order to get himself some iron ores that he could later process and turn into a proper tool for him to then use to get more of the metal to use. In truth it was an abomination of a tool that most wouldn't even think of taking the time to make let alone using, but Kreans needed to find some way to mine and chop and bone was the only resource he had with him. Even those supplies were running low now, he'd fumbled the first few attempts and ruined the bones that he'd been using so that now his stockpile of bone was significantly lower than it had been a few minutes ago. Now he was down to the last two bits and just having to hope that one would turn out alright at least and fit for his desired purpose.

Since the pick had finally come into being as the tool he had imagined Kreans decided to get right to work on the axe, sharpening a section of the side of one of the bones until it resembled what could likely only be called Cruinthe's crudest axe. It would work, but not for all that long, just like the pickaxe he'd made previously unfortunately.·
