"Yes, start with the wind you can control. Sit on the grass. Empty your head and breathe deep."
Allyria did what she bade Jordan to do. She closed her eyes, sat cross legged in the grass, and breathed deeply. She emptied her mind of her thoughts and bade visions of the future, past, or present to leave her for a time. She focused solely on her breathing.
"What is wind made of? Simply, air. Air is a voluminous yet thin mass that we breathe and we stand in. Like water to a fish. Air is our sea, land is our sea floor. Air flows like water. It has a current and flow of its own. Feel the current and flow of your breath."

Jorkahn had grown rather accustomed to clearing his mind. It was the only thing that kept him sane for a small period of time in his life. The Champion shrugged and sat cross-legged in the grass across from his teacher, just as he was told. It took him a few more seconds than Allyria, but he eventually cleared his mind. For the most part. He made sure to listen to what the Countess was saying as he focused on his breathing.
In and out, in and out. Like the ebb and flow of the ocean, or more likely a lake. He had never seen the ocean befo- No. Clear your mind. Jorkahn went back to focusing on his breathing, feeling the air flow through his nose and out his mouth, the rise and fall of his chest, and the movement of his clothes against his skin as he breathed. It seemed like he was understanding what Allyria was trying to get at, but only a little bit. It made sense to him logically, but the student wasn't entirely certain how it was supposed to be relevant, yet.

"Now try to feel the flow of the air around you, outside of your breath. These things move differently. Your breath comes in and then leaves the same way it came. You control the pressure, the amount, and how often it flows. Nothing controls those things in the wind outside of yourself. The air flows from one place to another trying to find perfect balance. When a place is balanced it is calm."
A nice and consistent breeze was moving along around them in the garden. It flowed from the northwest and proceeded southeast. The wind was cool.
"Wind can pick up heat or cold depending on where it has been. Where has this breeze been do you think?"

He listened to what she said causing him to ponder what he had only taken for granted before. He was so focused on his breathing the Champion had forgotten about the breeze in the garden. The moment he noticed it touching his skin it grew goosebumps and his hairs stood on end. He felt the wind hit him and eventually, after enough focus, he could feel the broken air change direction against his body and blow past.
From Allyria's description, the area around them must not have been in balance, the temperatures varying in some way or another. Her next question caught the lad off guard. Jorkahn kept his eyes closed but his face noticeably tensed. "The Darthaks? Maybe the Western Lake? I'm not really-" The warrior cut himself off and tried to clear his mind once again. He was thinking too hard about it, he needed to focus on the Countess' words and the flow of the wind around him. He wanted to figure out how to control the air outside, just like he could control his own breath.

"Perhaps. That is most likely. Winds that pass through the Darthaks are cold. Winds that pass through the desert to the far south are warmer. They lose some of their heat in the southern kingdoms depending on the season."
She breathed in deeply and then exhaled. The next step was to consider clouds and the fundamental erosion that wind does to things. Though she could tell that Jordan was getting antsy to do something. Anything at all.
"Look up. Consider the clouds. They move across the sky in one direction or another. The higher into the sky you go the more the winds tend to be the same. Same direction, same flow. Different pressure and different strength. Usually the same temperature. That is why storms always come off the ocean to the east and tend to head southwest across the country before turning south across the darthaks. The mountains can provide a protective barrier against some of the more terrible storms on the oceans."
She paused and let him consider the information before moving on.
"The last thing to consider about the nature of wind is that it is an eroding factor. Wind will slowly scrape away material from rock and dirt, and other hard substances. Overtime wind will shape mountains as much as water does. That is where it will be your weapon, until you gain better control."

Jorkahn nodded as an indication that he was listening to his teacher and when he was asked to look up he did so. He took careful note of the clouds and how they moved, thinking about where they came from and where they were going. He imagined the storms forming over the ocean that he had never seen and then breaking upon the mountains. He didn't know the entire layout of Cruinthe, but he had traveled a lot and seen most of the mountains surrounding the country. He hadn't realized until now the reason the country could have grown as big as it had. It was well protected, plenty of mountains to mine resources from, vast forests and rivers and lakes, among many other reasons. But his mind was wandering, this wasn't the point of their meditation.
The student took the time allotted to think about the clouds and imagine the flow of the wind in his mind. And when erosion was brought up, another thing Jorkahn had never thought about, he held his hand out into the wind. He felt the pressure and the force of it blowing across his hand, pushing into it. Surely there had to be some physical factor to the wind if they could feel it. Strong enough it could lift houses and blow down trees. If one could control these physical factors they could easily turn it into a blade, or perhaps project objects at their target. He had a few ideas already, but those would need to come later.

Allyria stood up then and brushed herself off. The contemplation part of the training was complete, and this was was a basic overview, not an in depth lesson on the physics of spellcasting wind spells and how best to use them. He would need practice with the basics before he could grasp higher concepts.
"Let's move inside for the next part of the lesson."
She would lead him to the living room with the comfortable couches. It had end tables and a low beverage table between the sitting furniture. It was the room they had occupied before.
"As you may be aware, wind has many practical applications. For a fighter like you what comes to mind first for me is increasing the speed of your weapon swings so that they either hit harder or hit the enemy before they can mount a defense. This can be done through spell work or enchantments. The benefit of doing it through a spell is you can control it. Which would be useful in a tournament setting where the objective isn't to kill your opponent."

Jorkahn looked confused when the Countess stood up. It seemed so sudden. He blinked the focus back into his eyes and took some time to stand up himself, armor creaking as he did so. Maybe he should be in more comfortable clothes if he tried this again. The warrior brushed himself off just as his teacher did and nodded, following quietly behind her.
The fledgling mage felt very calm after their somewhat meditative session and was content to look around in silent contemplation. He was admiring the scenery, however the basics of wind magic were on his mind. When they reached the couches the student sat down and listened to his teacher.
"I imagine ways of throwing my opponent off balance, or maybe deflecting their blows. Either way, you have been slowing opening my mind to the benefits." The lad chuckled under his breath as he thought of the last tournament he was in. He still hadn't fully forgiven himself for paralyzing one of his opponents. He wondered if the mages were able to help her regain feeling or movement. The reason he chuckled, however, was because he still couldn't believe he had won.
"Yes, I have experience with tournaments."

"In a true combat environment just knocking over your foe may be enough for you to get your axe into them. But sometimes you'll need to actually do real harm with magic. Remember what I said before, it is a tool for defense. Having poor control over your powers is what leads to accidents. Youths make many accidents occur when they are discovering their magic without a teacher. Now, you will need to practice this art. Do it away from people and property. You do not want to draw attention from the kingdom for this."
Allyria couldn't think of anything else he'd need to know right away. The basic lesson was complete. If he needed advanced lessons regarding wind magic he would have to wait until she had achieved those levels of mastery herself.
"With that said, I have nothing left to teach you for now. Unless you have questions I can answer."

As he had been doing through much of the lecture, the young man nodded in response to his teacher's comments. A large part of him wished to begin practicing immediately, to prove to himself that he could now manipulate the wind using magical means. But Allyria's stern words and his own understanding of magic made him err on the side of caution. He would practice on his own accord.
The Champion waved off Allyria's comment about the kingdom finding out. "I could care less about the Sovereign Kingdom's Mage Hunters at this point. Having said that, however, I will still attempt to keep a low profile." Jorkahn shifted in his seat. "No questions for now. I may send some correspondence through letter if I can think of any in the moment of practice. But, I do have another matter to discuss of you recall our conversation earlier."
The fledgling mage leaned forward and searched for the words he wanted to say before speaking. "As I mentioned before, I am now Duke Mardok's Ritgr. As such, he wished for me to organize an expedition into his old family ruins. Knowing full well your interest in the like, I have come to offer you a position on the Expedition. You may bring whomever you deem trustworthy. While I cannot promise any rewards myself, I can do some favors for you. I am also quite certain you could negotiate with the good Duke if need be. What say you?"

"You should care, they are your enemies."
War theory aside, he was a rogue mage in their kingdom. The bottomline was that his very existence was illegal and punishable by death. Allyria's status would be strange if she wasn't to become a wanted criminal. Being a foreign national she would be exempt from that law, but as she's also a land owner she may be subject to it. She was not learned in the law, and couldn't comment on any basis other than her uneducated opinion. She did know that mages never wanted for enemies. The expression also went over her head. Cruic wasn't her first language. Idioms still escaped her.
The countess mulled over Jorkahn's news of an expedition into Mardok's old ruins. The thought intrigued her. Especially since two of the recent expeditions she had planned never got out of the planning stages. THe first one was delayed due to injuries incurred by the blasted crows. The second delayed because the person that was supposed to watch her back went missing. She couldn't expect too much from random strangers after handing them gold. In this economy, if she needed gold that badly, she'd disappear once she got her hands on some. Now she had more than she'd ever need. It didn't hurt her, it was just annoying.
Hillsfar would have to wait. Mardok was more likely to be accomplished soon.
"He can expect me. I won't bring anyone else."

The lad wasn't bothered much by the mage hunters because he was normally in Alliance owned territories. At least, that was until he was on a mission. But then again his missions normally involved fighting undesirables so people like that were expected. However, maybe he was being a bit too arrogant. The man laughed at that thought. He had changed.
Jorkahn smiled at Allyria's response. "Glad to hear, my Lady. Now," The Champion stood as he spoke. "unless I can do something for you I will take my leave. There is much to do." Jorkahn bowed. "Thank you very much for your tutelage and hospitality, Countess. I appreciate it immensely." He would wait for her response before making a move towards the exit. Her home was beautiful but he had business to attend to and did not wish to outstay his welcome.
Exit thread unless there is more to do.
