"We are getting so close. But it's so hot."
"I think we might dry out and die if we don't get water soon."
"We'll be alright. No need to be dramatic, Kalimbra."
The pair continued to move towards the tower. This time they turned westward, looking for a way through the streets towards a safe haven. They needed to rest, and examine their options. Obviously close quarter combat wasn't a good idea, and neither was ranged combat. Not without having some good cover. If they could find a spot and find a building to occupy that was a key structure other than the tower, and fight from there, that would be ideal.
Unfortunately they also needed to drink, and eat, or they'd probably start to slow down. They continued along the cobblestone streets running red with blood to the best of their ability. Despite the sweat starting to dry up on their bodies. Despite their skin starting to get irritated at the loss of moisture. Despite all the things that made a desert miserable.
"How could a lush land like this get so dry two months out of the year."

The battalion commander was not what he had expected, in a few ways. While he knew better than to assume an old woman wasn't fit to be leading troops, he still thought it would be someone younger. The magic filled in the questions as to why she was in charge, but then he was once again entirely out of his depth. This was something for Allyria to handle, not him. Here he was though, and Tyr would have to do. He readied his mace and shield, he would meet this foe in whatever form it took. He may not be a giant animal, but he was still plenty strong and could do some damage. His first move would be to wait for it to swoop by, whenever it did, and try and bring it to the ground with a downward vertical swing before it could hit him. If that failed his shield would have to take the brunt of the damage. He had no idea just how deadly this beast's talons would be and whether his armor would hold up to it. The soldiers would never be able to touch him, sure, but this was magic. Unless you were the one using it you could never be sure what it was going to do. Without a better plan, Tyr would continue in such a manner until the beast was dead. Block the talons, swing to bring it down, and if it ever stayed down then beat it into submission. It was the simplest method of warfare, hit it hard until it dies.

Kilinger on the other hand had no reason to engage the bird, and without a bow of his own to use there was no combat role he could fulfill. No, in this instance his only real help was to try and figure out what the hell was going on here. Granted he had little to no knowledge of actual magical principles, this didn't seem quite right. Wouldn't you just summon a giant eagle instead of turning into one? Less dangerous. He focused on the eagle itself, trying to find any odd bits to it or a weakness to be exploited.

Allyria watched as explosions ripped through the streets of Morith to the south by the southern gate. She watched as militia filled in the gaps and outflanked kingdom troops. The slaughter was terrible and extensive. Smoke rose from the streets, and body parts were still raining down from the explosions. She took a few deep breaths and calmed herself. The adrenaline rush was massive. Exerting that much wellspring energy and converting to such a destructive force was so exciting on a primal level that she felt like she was riding on a dragon through the span between worlds. It was so exhilarating. The knowledge that she had slaughtered hundreds in a mere moment had yet to sink in fully.
She turned north. Sweat was starting to bead on her skin. The wellspring energy for the spells began to charge throughout her body. Purple smoke wafted from her eyes through the mask, and out of the sides as well with her every breath. Her tattoos glowed with a brilliant purple light. That light began to change color to scarlet. In the palms of both hands two tiny stars were beginning to form. She chose her targets, the four large companies occupying the space in line with the tower and the northern gate. An attack there would make the enemy think twice about pouring in through that gate.
Unleashing the stars was simple, she fired them both off and they arced across the sky with wicked and deadly speed and accuracy. Two more stars were on their way before the first two hit their targets.

The four all went down with sickening crunches, Kell grimaced at each impact of hammer on bone yet continued his swings through, at least this way he could give them a quicker death. It was still a gruesome act, and in another time he may have succumbed to the panic and regret over what he'd done, but for now his adrenaline was up and his fear of dying at the hands of these soldiers far outweighed those feelings. Later there would be a time for mourning and regret but for now he just needed to fight against the odds and live, and it really was against the odds considering the tide of men surrounding him.
Two spear thrusts made it past his guard and stabbed into his armour, luckily the leather was too hard and each was deflected with minimal effort, he could just about feel the impact but neither pierced into his actual flesh. It was a good thing he'd come armoured, even better that his armour was able to defend against the weapons that most seemed to wield on this battlefield. That still didn't change that there were a lot more of them than there were him and he wasn't going to last forever, but at least it was going to be a lot tougher for them to take him down, but he would run out of endurance far before this mob would.
For now however he just had to keep himself going and fight till either they gave out or he did, he was far enough away from any of the militia that he wasn't expecting much in the way of help. The soldiers were still surrounding him but those nearest were down, Kell took the chance to quickyl take a swig from his waterskin as more soldiers took the initiative and stepped into the fight properly. As they did he would meet them with more swings of his hammer.

"Good Work men! We've got them now! KEEP FLANKING! MOVE AROUND THEM! THEY'RE SLOW AND WEAK!"
Redgar could feel the SKC troops Morale coming to a hairsbreadth from breaking. If he could continue to motivate his troops to keep pushing the SKC, they would break here by the south gate. All he had to do was keep up the encouragement. After he shouted his orders he had Baalrung move to the tower so that he could pick up a waterskin and some dragonfruit. He ate his ration and drank his fill from his waterskin, then began to head back to the front line. He lived for war. He felt so alive fighting.
"COME BAALRUNG, TIME TO KILL SOME MORE THIEVING DOGS!"
The direwolf howled in agreement with its master's call. The animal raced through the streets and soon would be back at the front line to continue fighting.

Mina felt something was off. Tyr had challeneged the enemy commander, who appeared to turn into a giant eagle before their very eyes! She muttered under her breath an exclamation, and then took a second to think about what had just occurred. Knowing from her own experience transforming herself, it was far too instant to be an actual transformation or shape shift. And where was the sacrifice to do so? She growled out loud to Kilinger, who was just standing around keeping an eye on things in her point of view. Then she saw through it. It was a fucking illusion. Of course it didn't make sense!

King Redgar Karligar -Encountered enemies: 76th Battalion-No enemies The militia around Redgar managed to close in on their enemies and wipe out a good portion of them on the wings of their offensive. With this flanking maneuver they had swung the tide of battle in their favor. The aid from the tower was capitalized upon perfectly. Jorkahn Wealddir -Encountered Enemies: 87th Battalion-3 infantry (Same as Kell) Jorkahn would stride up to a conflict going down. He was just in time to see a drokagr lad cut down two infantry men of the Sovereign Kingdom of Cruinthe. He was also just in time to see them attack him as well. Two had managed to score hits on him, their spears however, slid off the mage's armor easily. Jorkahn was uncontested. Allyria Allenmorde -Encountered Enemies: None.Allyria's stars fell upon enemy troops of the eighty second and eighty third battalions, destroying two entire companies of each and allowing the city's militia to recapture the northern gate. Fyrra Na'Limndra -Encountered Enemies: None. The Kalimbra encountered no enemies. Tyr (0) -Encountered Enemies: 72nd Battalion-Battalion Commander Shapeshifter Tyr would find both of his swings missed their targets. Despite believing that the eagle was diving and scraping at him with its talons, there was nothing there for him to hit. His hammer passed through the air harmlessly. Only the ground suffered when the hammer finally stopped, taking a bit of dirt out of the ground each time he tried to pummel the beast. To Kilinger and Mina it would appear that the sorceress had closed in but was not in melee range. She had thrown three daggers at the Duke, each of them missing. One by a extremely wide margin. Perhaps she had been distracted by trying and failing to maintain her illusions. She was not overly concerned with the mounted waif or the other lad. It was the man in the ant-like armor that concerned her. He had challenged her, and he had done a great deal of damage to her battalion. Illusion: 1D100 => 85 Success -Illusion hard locked. Illusion: 1D100 => 36 -Mina Free of the illusion (rolled 14) Illusion: 1D100 => 93 Failured -Kilinger Free of the illusion Three daggers thrown: all misses.
@namaphry (1 kill) -Encountered Enemies: 70th Battalion -2 Infantry Rithaleya would find that one of her arrows had met its mark. The other two had managed to startle the other two targets as their comrade went down and arrows passed them by. They took cover behind a pile of garbage and a merchant's cart in the street. Neither of them wanted to get shot like their fellow had been. He had dropped like a pile of hammers. Instead, they started shouting for reinforcements. "OVER HERE! WE'RE PINNED DOWN! MOUNTED ARCHER OVER HERE!" Kell Lo'Tharan (2 Kills) Encountered Enemies: 87th Battalion-3 Infantry. Two infantry went down and the other three attacked simultaneously. Kell would find two more spears attacking him, yet they slid off his defenses without so much as cutting a thread or hair. The men were confused, were they fighting a mage? How did their previous comrades die? One man did a cursory look, and found that they were being approached from behind. "Hey! Behind us!"Now they were surrounded.

Rithaleya rode up on the far side of the cart and climbed onto it, to use its height as a perch for sending more arrows toward the soldiers who were hiding behind it. She was getting a bit tired of roaming around in the dry heat, but she was looking forward to finishing what she started. And it would be funny if reinforcements arrived while she was standing on a cart... so long as she still had time to get mounted again.
Riding 0 + 90% Agi, to dismount onto a cart, vs 33 hHtRKICk Climbing 0 + 90% Agi, to climb onto it, vs 33
Unfortunately, her foot got tangled in the stirrup, and she fell off her horse. Even when she stood back up, she still couldn't find a way up the cart from the ground with her bow in hand, so she stowed it to prepare Icebrand and Firebreaker--or maybe it was the other way around?--in case the soldiers rushed in to flank her, or worse, steal her horse!

Kilinger watched the events unfold with a conflicted conscience. After seeing through the illusion he felt compelled to do something but the rules of honor stated he should stay out of it. On one hand he knew Tyr would be incredibly unhappy if he stepped in, on the other the illusion was likely to get Tyr killed if he couldn't break free from it as well. There was also the army to contend with however, and if Kilinger entered the duel the soldiers probably would as well. Then they'd be back to square one, except this illusion mage would be actively engaged against them. As he mentally debated his position the man did little more than watch. Without a bow of his own he couldn't engage from a distance anyway. Tyr on the other hand was confused by everything going on. Something about the eagle's movements bothered him, but he couldn't quite place what it was. He focused on the bird itself, trying to pinpoint what was wrong with it. He kept up his shield up to protect against whatever attacks might come at him, but no more swings went out. They didn't seem to be doing anything useful at the moment, better to save his energy until he had a better plan.

Jorkahn's face still had a wicked grin as he planted himself just out of immediate melee range to the soldiers that noticed him. He held up the head of the commander he had slain for them to see plainly. "Your commander's body lies several feet in the other direction, your battalion scattered." The warrior pointed the way he came with Adrian's head before turning back to the soldiers. "Now flee." He lobbed the head in front of him, it landed with a splat at their feet. "Or face the same fate."
The Champion leveled his axe at the soldiers in order to get his point across. He did not make a move to strike, he would only take a defensive position and attack if they did. He was being surprisingly merciful. Perhaps Kell would have killed them before they could flee.

Post by Allyria Allenmorde on Aug 3, 2017 20:05:49 GMT -5
Allyria was beginning to feel low on energy in comparison to her normally vast reserves. As she watched her previous salvo of crimson stars explode in a row across the northern section, blasting apart the companies that were in a line from the keep through to the gate, she focused on recharging her wellspring energy reserves. The most abundant source of wellspring energy was the otherside. The spectral realm. She tore open a micro portal between her fingers on her left hand and let the energy flow into her. After a moment, not wanting to tempt the portal any longer than necessary, she collapsed it on itself and allowed it to cease to exist.
With fresh wellspring energy filling her pool, she looked for a new target. She looked from the north towards the east and spotted the battalions that had managed to penetrate the city by man blocks. Then she looked further north from that and saw that the warehouse district was still under attack. Weighing her selfish interests with protecting the city as a whole she chose to fire on the areas in the warehouse district occupied by enemy forces.
That district was no good to anyone if it remained in enemy hands, she reasoned with herself that they would at least need the structures there to store building materials for any efforts to rebuild the city once the battle was over. In her heart she was doing it because she didn't want the SKC to get a hold of any of her valuable magical assets.
She'd rather them burn.
Of course that was if she had to fire on her own warehouse. Hers was not yet under siege. But why let them get close to her property? Or the property of others? There was no point in dragging that out.
Three more crimson stars would streak out through the sky, towards three more SKC companies.

Fyrra and Merrake would soon arrive at the tower past the Militia line. They seemed to be inspired but lacking the equipment and means to appear intimidating. The Kalimbra was ready to call it quits. She was so thirsty, and she wasn't the only one. Merrake looked downright dry. They arrived at the tower, practically dragging themselves the last block, and filled up on water and dragonfruit, replenishing themselves fully. Then they'd each take a waterskin and several pieces of the fruit.
"It'd be best to hold onto some of this for future use."
"I wonder who is on the tower shooting those spells off? They're causing a lot of damage..."
"The explosions are a bit much. Maybe we should go see and figure out where best to be of help?"
"Indeed, good idea Merrake."

Now that Redgar was refreshed for the battle ahead, he charged into the enemy lines, attacking with his halberd. He continued to lead by example. Hopefully his foes would find him too fierce a challenge to confront. Hopefully they would soon break. He had killed many of them, his wolf had killed many of them. It was only a matter of time before the scales tipped again and the enemy were on the retreat. He shouted at the top of his lungs, egging his militia on towards victory.
"WE HAVE THEM ON THE RETREAT NOW! KEEP PUSHING! KEEP KILLING!"
He hoped his example would prove that Morith's enemies were weak enough for a barely armed towns person to overcome.

Now that she had broken free of the spell, Mina was looking for a way to overcome the foe right in front of her. The illusionist was throwing daggers at Tyr. How rude. Trying to kill him in a mundane fashion while using a spell to keep him from being able to defend himself. Not equal footing at all. Mina did not like that. Mina sought to even the odds further. She reached for her powers, and sought something flammable on the mage's person. Their clothing, their equipment. Anything really, and she set it ablaze with dark flames.

Two more men fell to the swings of his hammer, a like number of their allies sought to take advantage of the fact they'd lived through his attacks to attempt a counter. Both spears skittering harmlessly off of his armour, they must know by now tjat they couldn't pierce his armour and yet they kept trying, bar a lucky shot to the eyes or possibly into a joint he was impervious to their weaponry and yet they kept going. Surely it would have been more advantageous for tjem to simply mob him or cause him enough blunt force trauma to kill him tjat way, yet it seems they were not organised and more of a mob than anything else.
It seemed however that something was sowing panic amongst them, he could hear shouts coming from the men of them being surrounded. The half-drokagr had no idea what could possibly be surrounding such a huge mass of men and couldn't see over tjem all to find out. If reinforcements had come he was grateful, hopefully they were competent enough to turn this tide.
For now he would simply swing again, his arms were growing heavier with each swing but he dare not take the time to sheathe his hammer and draw sword instead. He might be protected from harm but in no way was he invulnerable if they could get a lucky hit. For now he would seek to remove his immediate problem in the form of the soldiers who had just struck him, then he would just have to hope he could last out for reinforcements.
Kell MP: 220 (+15)
