Tyr pulled out another five coins before starting to shuffle the cards again. There was no need to keep to a rotation, is was simple enough to just keep dealing himself. Besides, if the two of them kept up with the wine he'd be the only one capable of getting the cards dealt properly. Speaking of drinks, his tea was starting to get cold and Tyr polished off what remained. Hopefully a server would be by shortly for a refill, but until then he had a question to answer.
"Mostly manuals as well, although relatively few were on combat or warfare. Mine focused on the use of a forge, or the governing of people." His father had managed to dig up a few books for a young Tyr to read between hammering things out by the forge. It wasn't much, but it helped get him started. "Recently I've found myself digging through old journals, learning the history of my family. I've become somewhat fascinated with history and the things hidden in it." Learning the nature of the symbol his family hid away, the nicknames some of the elders used behind closed doors. Meaning was hidden everywhere, sometimes in plain sight. Nevermind the ruins left behind that had yet to be explored, their secrets still locked away. Who knew what power remained buried deep in the fortresses of old?

"That's the sort of stuff that Katrina has read. Not the forging stuff. I don't think she'd ever pick up a hammer to bang out a sword or however it is done. The accounting and law stuff. The math always made my head hurt."
"Not your knack, Cousin. You could learn though."
"Well. I guess I could learn to read that stuff."
Redgar picked up his cards and stared at them for a few moments. He hoped he had a better hand compared to the others this time. He had placed his coins in the pile already, Mina did the same.
Redgar's hand: 2G1dxl4G
Mina's hand:
Current pot: 15¤
Mina remained as stoic as always when it came to cards. Not an eye twitch, not a smile, not even an extra breath. It was one of the few things she had an edge over Redgar on. She was lucky. He wasn't particularly lucky. Sure he had been born to the right parents and first to inherit the duchy. But beyond his privileged life he hadn't been particularly lucky.·

The cards seemed to be heavily out of his favor this hand as well, Tyr resigned himself to not upping the ante any and riding it out. Keeping the best blank face he could, he muddled over this newest piece of information. Redgar really couldn't maintain his own lands, could he? Being so dependent on Katrina for the basic administrative work would definitely give her an advantage when it came to manipulating him how she chose. How would he know any better what was going on?
"I could teach you if you like. Given some time to prepare it would be relatively easy. You can read a map to give troops orders, it's just a different set of symbols." At least he was pretty sure Redgar could read a map. He could, right? If he couldn't this might actually be a bit trickier than he thought. "Any draws this hand?" Playing it out, Tyr would pull a few new cards but his luck didn't seem to change. The hand was still mostly a wash and there wasn't much salvaging it.

Regards considered the offer, and considered his hand. He thought he had a fair chance of maybe beating Tyr, but he had no chance at beating Mina. He didn't know what to do with Tyr's offer. It seemed to be altruistic, but there had to be a catch.
"I don't need any cards. Far be it for me to decline such an offer, Tyr, but I song see what you get out of it."
"I decline new cards, and call the hand."
Mina would lay her hand on the table and collect her winnings if Tyr failed to acquire good cards that would beat hers.
