Jonathon breathed in the clean air, it wasn't actually clean air it was more that it was air cleaner than most he'd had for the past two or so decades of his life. It had passed in a blur, agony, pain and suffering being all he could remember for most of that time, the boiling hatred towards his parents bubbling away within him another of the few things he had retained throughout the brutal training regime he'd endured. Plucked from his family at a young age he hadn't been outside since the day he'd entered the Fordeth academy, all he knew when he came out the other side was that now he could harness his magical ability and use it properly and to some decent effect, although he was expected mainly to use this to fight for the SKC in whatever war they may declare next.
Currently though it was peacetime, not really peace time, more a time when tensions were high and sides were preparing for war, but no one had actually been called in for active service yet, most were left to their petty troubles and their personal trials and tribulations, free to pursue their own interests for the time being until they were called upon to begin the process of turning the wheels and powering up the gears of war.
Jonathon was one of those such people, currently on leave, he had yet to be called upon to actually fight, being a new graduate of the Sorceror King's mage academy and when called upon should be expected to fight and die for his master, this was now a part of his subconscience, drilled into him in some arcane form over the years as it must have been, put in place to create an undying loyalty to the man who's men had plucked him from his family and locked him away for the majority of his adult life.
But then his mind flicked on, a switch turning and a lightbulb flaring into existance in his brain, it hadn't been Julgrava's men that had done this to him. It had been his own family, his own flesh and blood who had called them to take him, "For your own good" He could still hear his mother's words echoing in his eardrums as he replayed the scene for the millionth time since it had happened, the years he had spent wondering what he had done to deserve this having gradually turned his heart to the fire and brimstone born only from a need for vengeance.
But for now, he would have to be patient, his family's holdings were a fair stretch from Fordeth, and for him to cover that distance he would need to be fully ready for when the time came to enact his vengeance on the people that had wronged him, but for that he would first need supplies and possibly a horse or the journey would take much longer than he could afford for it to.
Whilst he knew that his magical ability had been tamed and his power over it vastly increased, he had no knowledge of his limits, of his boundaries and what he could do nor how to do it. He had no memory of ever learning about his magic, that was locked away in a vault deep inside his head that was unbreachable even to him, the memories of his time in the academy. He would need to rectify this as soon as he got out of the city, he knew that the authorities here would not dare to stop him should he decide to try some minor magics as they would with another, he knew that his position as one of Julgrava's battle mages gave him power and authority over the common masses. He intended to put this to good use.
A lot had changed in the years he'd been away, and he'd never really had a chance to properly scout out Fordeth anyway, having not had a chance to be outside in twenty years or so and before he went in having never actually been in the city. Jonathon set to strolling around the city, on the outside acting as if he had not a care in the world while he plotted and schemed, drawing up mental lists in his head and possible ways to get what he needed.

Today was going to be a good day, Gabriel could feel it in his fingers, he felt it in her toes. The sun was out, the sky was blue as the ocean except for the occasional island of fluffy white clouds here and there. The birds sang their beautiful song. Gabriel was sure no one could be sad on such an amazing morning like today.
Gabriel stood off the side of the street hiding from everyone else though. He did't want to be seen. Just to observe everyone, see if anything fishy was going on. Something he could enjoy doing. Sally was by his side, the decorative lace holding the scabbard was working well and Gabriel was happy. Quickly down the ally Gabriel pulled Sally out and examined it again. A beautiful sword for a well beautiful handsome guy. As the sun glinted off the blade Gabriel quickly put away the blade.
Stop being distracted by Sally he thought to himself, back to looking over the people of this lovely city. No one shone out from the crowd, but when did anyone actually shine out. Everyone wanted to blend in. Gabriel just waited, eventually he would see something out of the ordinary.

Jonathan was slightly dissapointed with Fordeth, it didn't seem to have really changed much, in fact that would be an understatement, it hadn't really changed at all. Life had gone on, people had died, more had been born, but at the end of the day that's what life was, from the moment you were born you started on your way to death. That saddened the mage rather a lot, the idea of so many people dying so quickly and easily, yet that was what life was, just an endless circle of life and death.
Jonathon practically floated along the streets, examining everything and feeling a rush at being outside for the first time in years, his emotions were bubbling over as he saw more and more of this city. And this was just one city, so much love and hate and poverty and death and care and scorn all wrapped up in one place, so many emotions to be felt but only one lifetime to feel them all. That was the problem with humans, their lifespan was far to short, each one was like a candle, they all slowly winked out near the end of their lives and there was no bringing them back. Well there was, but necromancy was forbidden no matter how good a reason you may have for wanting to bring someone back from the dead, the crown had declared it as wrong, and if a crown that would steal any children with even an ounce of power and essentially enslave them thought necromancy was wrong then it must be some serious stuff. Jonathon hadn't had the chance to experiment with it himself, but in the quest for power it was an essential piece that he could not afford to miss out, it could be very useful to him.
Jonathon twirled his finger in the air, wondering what it was exactly that he could do, he could feel his magic resting in him at his core, a ball of power as yet untapped, he was curious as to what exactly he could get up to with it, he knew the theory behind the basics, it just felt right to use his power even if he didn't know what to do exactly. He'd been tutored in how to create your own magic, or how to steal from things around you for your magic, how to summon beings to do your well and shield yourself and others from any potential harm. Yet he felt these things were slightly inconsequential, each was useful for sure but he would need a much stronger power if he wished to get anywhere in this world, he'd need a much stronger source and a medium to get that source through so that it would work, it would be the best way he could currently think of to gain power.
He was positively giddy at the thought of increasing his power, but the fire birthed by his parents was still in him, not forgotten, but more overwhelmed by the current emotion than the thoughts of what he would do when he got back to his parents again.

Gabriel wheel into a day dream. He was on a hill in the dark of the night. He could hear wolves closing in on him. Then as wolves jumped out at him he fought them off one by one. Exhausting, tiring and hardwork. Gabriel snapped out of her day dream as one of the wolves jumped on him. Gabriel stepped back but then was reassured but the look of the normal town infront of him. Back to looking at people Gabriel guessed.
Everyone was normal, god this was starting to get frustrating. Gabriel was getting bored, there must be someone strange or different or there was no fun. Maybe he should move from this area. He walked away from the wall and started walking down the street trying to blend in.
There must be something or someone strange or out of the ordinary for him to do. This day was so boring, Gabriel would just have to look for somewhere else to wait out of sight and look over the commoners of the town.

Jonathon's hands were itchy, he wanted to practice, to see what he could do, he needed to know that he could at least do something, that those years hadn't been in vain. If he was to face his parents he needed to know he at the very very least had some skill, that was paramount to his success, he would make them pay for what they'd done to him even if he had to go all out to do it. He didn't just resent them for doing it, he hated them to his very core, they'd sent him away knowing exactly what would happen to him when they did, yet they had done it anyway.
Jonathon felt something brush his cheek and reached up to brush it off, realising only as he brushed it away that it was a tear, he was crying, the strong outburst of emotions had moved him to this without him even realising. Brushing away the tears he made sure no one had seen before ducking into an alleyway, his main help was darkness, and this alleyway was nicely overshadowed by the houses on either side. He completely ignored the woman at the entrance to the alleyway, she would tell no one anyway once he flashed the royal seal at her, not that it particularly mattered, he was one of Julgrava's sorceror mages they wouldn't arrest him for some basic practice nor would a mage hunter stop him.
Jonathon closed his eyes and concentrated, better to start off easy at first, he could feel the power in his core reverberating as he dug inside himself for access to it, yet all he could pull from it were a few whispy tendrils, he was unable to tap the greater depths of what he had, frustration passed across his face before he regained control. He could work on that, for now he didn't need a lot, he was only trying some minor magics purely to see if he could more than anything.
Extending his senses outside of his own body he felt the darkness around him in the alley, hiding here away from the light and festering, waiting for the sun to go down, that was when it would take over. Jonathon attempted to assert his dominance, using those thin tendrils of power to grapple with the darkness and subdue it. He would attempt to bend it to his will assuming he was strong enough.

It eluded him, breaking whatever bonds he tried to create around it's form, crushing his assaults wherever he made them and rendering all of his attacks useless, it was pitiful that he couldn't even manage something so simple yet he had to deal with it. Maybe it was just that he needed practice, he'd learnt inside the academy for sure, but in a controlled environment not out in the open.
The darkness writhed around the young mage, moving in patterns that would seem random to any onlookers but to Jonathon it looked as a battle between his own strength and that of the darkness, one he'd lost.
Jonathon's eyes snapped open and the darkness dissipated, his attacks on it ceasing, his attempts at breaking it foiled and the tendrils of power that he'd attempted to use had been used up in the process. Overall it had been a failure, but a learning experience for sure.

As Gabriel was about to leave the wall a man came along just before him, briskly walking past Gabriel like he had a place to go. What did this man want, why would he be going down a dead end alleyway. Gabriel sat down and acted like he wasn't interested in any of this, but kept an eye on the man. Nobody normally came into the dark and musky alleyways in the day, or night for that fact. It was a dead end, useless.
As Gabriel looked over to the man he saw something he couldn't comprehend. The man was trying something strange. You could say it was magical. Then Gabriel's mind slipped into gear. The man was trying magic. "Hey, what do you think you are doing. That's illegal, and there's no where for you to go." Gabriel spoke loudly and clearly trying to sound as in control of the situation as he could. He quickly got up and whipped out Sally as well to look as menacing as he good. "Now, we have two ways of doing something here, the easy way, or the hard way." Gabriel had hopes on both ways, as he was dying for a fight, but also he didn't want to have to get Sally dirty and possibly kill a man. Using magic wasn't too bad, but it had to be dealt with.

Jonathon's eyes snapped to the form of the woman before him, it was darker in this alleyway so he couldn't see her incredibly well, but he could see her easily well enough to notice that she had a sword pointed in his direction, a rapier to be specific, it appeared well crafted although he wouldn't particularly know.
It seems that the person was trying to figure out why he'd been doing magic in public, they seemed rather irate over the fact that he was publicly using his power and hadn't even cared enough about her. The fact that she had her weapon out this quickly showed that she was spoiling for a fight, that and the fact that she was practically begging him to attack her with the way she was acting.
Jonathon took a tight leash of his desire to just tear into her and unleash all he had, he had yet to gain proper access to his strength, for now he was still rather weak, he would grow for sure but right now he was like a hatchling. He'd just come out of the egg and he was testing his limits, trying to soar but only succeeding in a bit of flapping.
Jonathon took out his papers, a few pieces of paperwork including his citizen ID and his licence to use magic, both of them adorned with the seal of Julgrava due to his particular line of work, it'd be interesting to see how she reacted to him working for the sorceror king, you tended not to see so many people out in the light who were free to use magic to their whim.
"Stop. Before you cause me any more trouble and I have to gut you like a pig" He said whilst holding out the paperworks, swiftly replacing them in his clothes as he once again closed his eyes.
This time he would do it, Jonathon reached down and manipulated a few more misty tendrils from within his core, pulling them out of himself even as he felt himself get slightly weaker, the sudden sensation of tiredness slammed into him, why was magic usage tiring him, it was as if it was using up his body's own natural energy sources instead of his power. He contemplated that fact, this was how he'd been taught though so this was how he'd do it, ignoring the drain he whipped out with his strength this time.
Whilst on the outside he appeared to just be standing very still with hi arms outstretched, to one who could detect the battle that was going on around them they'd figure out the battle of powers as once again Jonathon tried to manipulate the darkness, tugging on it and breaking it, crushing it's defences whilst building his own offence.
The shadows around him once again pulsed vibrated around him, fighting back yet being drawn in at the same time.

The shadows whipped around him in a frenzy, seeking to escape from him, Jonathon exerted slightly more will and they settled, coalescing around him in several tendrils.
Jonathon tore away a small chunk and juggled it between his hands, it seemed as if it wouldn't be able to be used in any damaging way right now, but if he could practice this method, make it easier for himself and get him more used to the idea of manipulating shadow he was sure he could turn it into a deadly weapon in time.
He gave a devilish grin to the woman in front of him, he'd managed to succeed this time but he didn't know how long he could keep it up for, he could feel himself ever so slowly getting more tired for each second he held the shadows in check, it was as if his very vitality was being drained to allow him to continue as he was.

Gabriel stood their looking as brave as he could. Sword out standing straight up, if the man wanted a fight he would finish it. Then the strange man pulled out his paperwork and showed them in Gabriel's direction. Gabriel could barely read them and saw he was part of Julgrava's Magicians. Gabriel sat back down returning Sally to its hold and muttering to the man , "Oh, sorry I didn't realise. Deeply sorry." Gabriel sat down sheepishly.
Even if the man was going to fight, he had magic on his side, a big advantage. Gabriel sat back thinking of past happens, and strange things. He thought back to his first meeting with Arthurius back in the markets, he had got a bit of the wrong idea when Arthurius was properly smarted than Gabriel thought, well he had good meaning when he was handing around by the dragon fruit stall where all the dragon fruits had obviously gone off. Well now they were half friends. Something good had to come from that.
Then Gabriel saw the man start trying to do magic again. He wondered what type of magic he was doing. It seemed hard for him. When the man had finished doing this strange procedure Gabriel spoke up, "Excuse me, but may I ask what type of magic you mainly do. Like do sorcerers focus on one?" Gabriel could only wait for an answer, well if the man answered his question.

Jonathon was rather happy that she had decided not to question him any further, it was lucky that she had no real knowledge of magic otherwise she'd know that the magic that he was currently performing was infact highly illegal even for someone with all of his documentation on paperwork that he'd showed her. She didn't seem able to actually read the paperwork but she could recognise that it looked incredibly official and even had the seals and marks to prove it. Overall she did in fact seem to be a rather ill-taught woman with barely any knowledge on anything that the average citizen wouldn't know.
She was sorry, that was a start, Jonathon dropped the magic imbued shadows that were currently around him, it was dangerous to keep them up for to long, it could drain far to much of his power, more than he could afford to lose at any one time considering that his particular power seemed to drain the user's life force instead of their magical energy as a normal mage's would. Why exactly this was he had yet to pinpoint but for now he just had to live with the fault and find a way to deal with it when he used magic, maybe later on it could be used to his advantage but for now it was just slightly annoying.
"I use the kind of magic that I use, I don't stick to a particular type rather anything that amuses me or I think is strong enough I will attempt to learn. A versatile mage is much better than one who is stuck on one particular type of magic" It was in his opinion a rather good cover up as this woman wouldn't know the difference anyway.

The guy made Gabriel think a lot. Magic was a wonderful but powerful thing. Gabriel wasn't the type of person who could do magic though . He had never shown any protential and never would. Sometimes he dreamed of being able to cast big fire balls or raise the dead, but it simply wasn't him. Maybe another lifetime he would, or somewhere down his family tree.
The man spoke words of wisdom but Gabriel still had questions that could take him to the edge. "But surely a Mage who has trained a certain type of magic all their life's would be stronger than one who has trained everything else equally their whole life wouldn't they?"
It was not every day you spoke to a Mage so Gabriel let out a question that always bugged him. A mages childhood would never be revealed no matter how much someone wanted to know. It was just something no one spoke about.

The point that this woman came up with would be a rather valid one in most cases, and generally was rather true as it would mean that the mage had a greater understanding of that one area as well as greater control and power over that one particular type of magic. At the same time though practising several types of magic gave you less understanding into each yet you could become more adaptable as you had more different resources at your disposal.
"In theory yes a mage who trained in one type of magic all of their life would be stronger, but at the same time a mage who has spent an adequate amount of time on several different disciplines would be much more versatile and would be able to adapt to different situations easier." Jonathon's face screwed up in thought for a minute, for someone such as this woman that probably wouldn't be particularly easy to understand, he needed an example.
"Say for example there's a mage that specialises purely in fire magic, and they are fighting on a lake, they will have incredible command over their fire magic but due to the environment they are in it can be dampened rather easily, whereas someone who has some control over fire, but also has trained in water magic would be at a large advantage. They can adapt easier to situations and are usable in a much wider variety of situations." He hoped that she would be able to understand what he said, it still would sound rather complicated to an average person, he had never had to teach someone something to simple before so his explainations weren't incredibly easy to understand.

The man was interesting. That was to say the least. His answer to the question was understandable, but it would only make Gabriel think more deeply into her next reply. Yes if you had a lot of tricks up your sleeve then you would have a lot to show, but being amazing at one trick would be even better than being able to do a bountiful of tricks.
"Ahhh, but say we go with your example. If you were a good enough Mage who could use fire well enough you could use the water to your advantage couldn't you. You don't need to know the magic to use a certain thing. As you could properly use the magic you have perfected and are strong in to effect what you can't use, couldn't you?
Gabriel wondered what the man's answer would be. This was turning out to be a very fun conversation after all, but would the man continue to play the game? It was the question left unanswered.

Why was she so stuck on this line of thought, it was interesting if anything that she was so interested in magic seeing as most people avoided it like a plague, magic generally brought trouble in one form or another so most wanted absolutely nothing to do with it.
"I'm not saying that the fire mage would be useless, i'm just saying that because they have chosen to only work with fire their power would be greatly dampened considering they are completely surrounded by water and so their opponent could counter them much easier. Sure they would still be pretty strong but their effect would be heavily dampened." Jonathon said, a slight note of annoyance creeping into his voice at her lack of understanding.
Jonathon sighed slightly in despair, it was obvious that she didn't understand even the basics of magic yet he didn't have the time, the patience, nor the inclination to actually teach her these things so he would just have to bear with it. The woman was very curious about magic though, could she have magic potential and be fishing for help, it was possible, he couldn't rule it out yet. He'd have to try and find out now.

Gabriel listened to the man as he once spoke, he had some good points. It was a shame he was wrong though. Gabriel giggled. "Your wrong." Gabriel giggled again. He couldn't believe the man had missed the crucial point.
Gabriel then carried on, "The water would only make your fire stronger." Pausing for effect, but talking before the man could butt in if he was going too. "The fire mage could use the water to his advantage. Yes water is fires natural enemy, but if I was a master of fire I would heat the water to boiling point, or I would just boil it all away. Did you not think of that good man?"
Gabriel felt good about this, he had been smarted. He couldn't wait for what the man would reply now. This conversation was turning out to be quite a fun one after all, well for something that had started with Gabriel pointing Sally at the mage

It was fairly easy for someone who knew nothing about magic or the strain of using it to point out ideas to do with it, it was also fairly amusing as they had a concept and just assumed it would work, fitting it into their mind and refusing to let go of it even if in practice it would actually be a rather inadequate idea.
He did agree with her idea of heating the water to a boiling point or boiling it away, but there were several flaws in her line of reasoning that would be made by someone who had yet to experience magic first hand, her theories were amusing and in some situations would be useful but in the way that she was saying them they were not even worth the time to say.
"And while you are boiling the water and making it all dissapear, which of course wouldn't be an instantaneous thing, your opponent would take the chance to kill you, also by boiling the water you are giving your opponent scalding hot water that they can then use against you. A quick thing about magic, the more that you try and do at once the weaker it will be, so say your fire mage is boiling this water, it would mean that them trying to defend against an attack at the same time would mean they'd have a weaker defence so the other mage could more easily break through it."
This woman seemed to believe that she had bested him several times over now, if her giggling and the smug expressions on her face were anything to judge by, yet any theory she came up with would just be a theory whilst at the end of the day he had experienced the physical and mental drain that magic left on you and she was speaking as she was, completely unknowing of the experience.
