We lived our lives in our paradise, As gods we shaped the world around. No borderlines we'd stay behind, Though balance is something fragile. While we thought we were gaining, We'd turn back the tide, it still slips away. Our time has run out, our future has died, There's no more escape.

It was early in the morning, no wait... scratch that! It was hours before the crack of dawn! and Gail could be found waiting around the training yards, waiting for the final modifications to the agility training course to be finished. The reason for her to be there so early in the day? simple... She'd caught news of a training course which was designed to improve the troops over all Dexterity! and was said to be far more effective than the standard procedures currently in place. Gail amongst several others where asked to help and test its effectiveness, and see if the results where as good as they claimed. and we all know, if there was some sort of test to undergo, or training to be had, Gail was perhaps the most punctual to these sort of things.
A man addressed her soon enough as the final touches where made. "Ugh, I thought it might be you... Was wondering what that white glint in the corner of my eye was. Here I see its the infamous Whisper of Ire... What do you want?!" The chief instructor asked with a slight distaste in his voice.
"I'm here to test your contraptions..." Gail replied with a slight hint of annoyance that this man would address her so disrespectfully.
"Ugh! Test it?! Its here to test you woman! Don't take so lightly the Cruinthian engineering! I promise It'll hurt if you do! and your pain is my pleasure Miss Ire..." He scowled at her, obviously insulted by her statement, ignorant in his eyes.
"Hmh..." She gave no reply to him, but merely pushed onward to the testing area. Out in the middle of the strategically placed Ballistaes, Gail waited for the operators to get to their posts. She'd been issued a challenge by the main man overseeing the entire operation, and her blood was burning wildly to prove she wasn't here to be just a guinea pig. Rather she was there to improve her worth on the battle fields, and further her abilities in her trade.
"Are you ready? Miss Ire?!" The Chief engineer sneered with his question rolling over her maliciously. Yet Calmly, she merely nodded in response. His sneer fell in to annoyance, but he gave the okay to commence fire. Gail wouldn't be intimidated by this sharp mouthed arrogant man. But the Ballistae were another story.
Five balls where fired nearly simultaneously, the only action she could do on a whim was dive forward! Surprised at their speed and rate of fire, she readied a roll in mid air, and on impact she went through with it, collapsing on to one shoulder, and letting momentum work its magic. She couldn't help but be slightly taken aback by how sudden those rubber projectiles had appeared out of no where! Maybe she had truly underestimated this agility course, maybe just a little.
Right as she managed to form crouching position fresh out of her roll, a ball flashed past her eyes from the side, pushing up and back, two more followed the first, and while in mid air turning, she saw two more of the ballistae readying to fire. "crap" one fired, then the next. The first ball she managed to avoid being slammed in the face by jerking her head off to the side, just barely managing! Unfortunately for her! the second clipped her shoulder in the direction she jerked. "Shit!" Spinning, she gritted her teeth at how painfully fast she was grazed!! That damn engineer wasn't joking when he said that it would hurt! She kept her balance though on one, but with effort.
Balls began firing at random intervals! totaling ten being let loose against her. She ducked the first three, halting her spin just as they darted over her head, and immediately unhesitatingly, Gail fell flat on her back as the rest blasted past her, another almost tagging her nose. she wasn't hit, but she could feel the force and wind from the shots! It finally dawned on her, that this was dangerous! The new recruits where going to have a hell of a time with this.
She rolled as four more where fired at her, colliding with the patch of earth she had once been laying on. Dirt sprayed in all directions, Some shrapnel from the ground pegged her in the side as she rolled. flat on her back again, the only though that came to mind was "MOVE MOVE MOVE!" Just as six more fired off at different timing! She flip backwards and up to her feet, those six balls smashing against the ground and rebounding! sending fragments of stone and them selves at her! She back peddled just in time to avoid some dangerously shattered rocks, and painful spheres of pounding force. leaning back they soared diagonally over her.
'HAHAH! Not so confident now, are ya Miss Ire?!" The engineer mocked as the ballistae began to send shots off one after the other. Three she narrowly dodged by swiftly jumping off to the side, two more! she pushed off the ground and back the way she'd initially bounded from. four right after! she spun with, and around, they collided with each other while moving past her whirlwind in motion body, and sent in scattered directions through out the yard. Yet then! one fired while she was in mid turn, and pegged her in the side, which she'd been ignoring the rock injury from! Meaning the pain became a harsh reality as soon as that rubber ball broke the skin. She winced as a small trace of blood wet the spot on impact.
"ERGH!" She coughed out, then dropped in rotation with the blow administered, three more fired straight and true, but didn't so much as graze her as she went down. Thinking fast, she was able to catch herself on one hand, then stabilized with the other. Throwing her weight, she flung herself around, painfully in twist of her torso, and throwing her self up and over four more. She landed on her feet, two more she managed to spin a final time around! But the fiftieth came so suddenly behind the two, she didn't have time to move.
Boldly she met the rubber ball with her eyes. It closed in nearly at the blink of an eye. her hand thank god was just a little faster, back handed it on the side, and with enough force smashed it away from her self and face! "HYAAAAAHHHHH!!!!" She roared as she sent the rubber shot whistling off to her left! Though of course it would still count against her.... if it where an arrow, she would have avoided damage of any kind to the face.
She panted heavily, sweat dripping from her head, over her brow, along her jawline, and soaked her body, matting her clothes to her body. She'd beat the arrogant Overseer at his game. He knew it, she knew it... and thus anger took him. But as militant as he still was. he said nothing more than what was needed. "Three hits, five to fail. You passed" he shouted from behind the Ballistaes.
"Mediocre, but passed." He shot his insult.
"Pass is a pass." She deflected. Her parting from there was a quiet one, and the engineer was left to stew in his own righteous mood. She was satisfied, and he couldn't take that from her. though she still gave him credit for building such a thing, it truly was an effective work out.

Furia wasn't quite excited for this business as being a test subject. she had received the notice just this morning, and was still working off a hangover. It was just an agility training exercise anyway, so there was no need for armor, or at least her heavy stuff. So she showed up in a nice and practical pair of leather breeches, her boots, the gauntlets, because she felt like she'd need them, and a nice light blue cotton tunic.
If was one of the few times she was seen without a lot of her gear on outside of the scarlet rose. Early morning hangovers can really do one in. If people have forgotten, which is likely, Furia is of light build. With shoulder length black hair, and green eyes. She is by no means frail however. As one of the stronger and faster officers in the new ranks, she was well respected.
"What's this business about test subjects and agility training?"
Furia yawned, the rising sun was compounding her hangover's headache. Really, she needed to get off the alcohol. But it was the only thing that let her sleep peacefully at night. Even though she never remembered her dreams if she had them. That in her mind was a good nights sleep, her dreams were plagued with nightmares anyway.
"Since you're one of the stronger new officers, we're going to be testing this course on you. Get hit more than five times with these rubber balls, and you fail the test course. That simple."
The chief engineer said. He was overseeing the testing phase of the training program it seemed. Furia rubbed the haze from her eyes, and looked about the training area, it was just a regular patch of dirt, with ballistae on short walls, all of which were pointed at her.
Wait...
"Begin!"
Pointed at her?
This didn't bode well.
"Wait... wh---!"
SLAM!
A rubber ball had just made her hangover worse, and knocked her off her feet. She shook her head, and rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding a ball that she was entirely unaware of. Still shaking off the effects of the rubber ball, climbing to her feet and stumbling forward with a massive headache, then she lost her balance, and leaned backwards, narrowly avoiding yet another ball. She still had a question to ask the chief engineer, but it seemed that he had fled the course! That slike!
Furia was still piecing together what was going on though. A headache, from a drunken haze, does not allow one to think properly. She stood still for a moment, and finally came to her senses. She had to dodge the rubber balls, at least forty five of them, and she had been hit by one right from the get-go. Which meant three had been fired.
Her eyes went wide, and she dashed to the right, and then rolled. Five balls bounced in various points around where she had been standing. It seems that they were now starting to coordinate their attacks on her. This was so unfair, the details of this training course had not been given to her!
"When I find that rotten Engineer"
She ducked under a ball.
"I'm going to kick him right in the stones."
Getting to her feet, and making a short hop, she had successfully dodged yet another ball, then she started to casually walk forward, before putting some of her agility to the test. A nice backflip, to avoid another five balls that were synchronized to pulverize her. One bounced under her as she was in the air, then she landed, and toppled to the side. Dodging the sixteenth ball that had been shot at her.
"Then I'm going to shove his own boots...."
Catching herself with her hands, how she managed that with a hangover is anyone's guess, she pushed herself back up into a standing position, wobbled, then fell on her ass. Dodging two more balls. The seventeenth, and eighteenth. It looked like it has mostly been a display of her hangover's blind luck, and her own agility. Perhaps she should get drunk more often.
Naaaaaaaaaaaaaah.
"So far up his ass..."
The Desert woman got back on her feet, and ran to the left, right at one of the ballistae. It fired at her, and she moved out of the way to the side, then preformed a slide across the dirt, getting her pants and side dirty. The other four did not anticipate this move, and missed her, rubber balls bounced off the walls. Bouncing balls everywhere, she was likely to be tripping on one soon.
"That it'll come out of his mouth."
She caught her breath for a moment while the other four loaded their ballistae, and then ran just as they fired at her, she ran along the wall, and then away from the wall, the ballista behind her fired at her back, and then damned if she didn't, trip on a rubber ball while she was watching it come at her from behind too late to react.
She fell flat on her face.
"Then I'm going to break his nose with said boot."
Furia rolled to the side, then got to her feet, only to leap out to the right, in order to dodge another ball coming right for her. Unfortunately a ball was coming from the direction in which she leaped, and she collided with it in mid-air, and hit the ground, a little dazed from the blow. She crawled for a few feet, then scrambled up, and waited, there was a lull in the ball firing.
"Then I'm going to take all fifty of these balls...."
They all fired at her, anticipating some kind of fancy shmancy movement to dodge them, so they were fired at alternating heights and points, to hit her if she didn't move, and to hit her if she moved forwards, back, or to either side.
Instead, she took a breather on the ground for a moment, and contemplated what she would do to him while the balls numbered between thirty one and thirty five soared over and around her. One narrowly came an inch from hitting her in the head, and making her hang over worse. But it missed, so she was indeed very lucky.
"Yea, I'll make him eat every single last one, until he explodes."
Furia got up off the ground, and dusted herself off. It was like mocking those men that were operating the ballistae. And indeed, they felt mocked, and began firing at random intervals. No longer organized, just firing to hit her four more times. Number thirty six wash shot at her head from behind, and thirty seven was shot at her head from the front. She saw the one in front, ducked it, and both balls collided above her head, and bounced off.
"Or I'll tie him to a post in the middle of this training field."
She then jumped out of the way of three more balls, numbers thirty seven through forty. They bounced off in random directions. Whilst two more were shot at her. Furia twirled out of the way of one, then back flipped over the other. Showing much more grace than usual. It appeared that her hangover was gone, and so was the headache.
"Then I'll shoot him over and over again with these rubber balls."
There were only eight balls left. Three of which were fired at once, coming from opposite angles to hit Furia from three sides in the chest. Furia however noticed this, and took a couple steps back, and watched physics do it's work. The three balls collided in the same spot. The middle ball was sent back in the direction it cam, and the other two balls went in a direction perpendicular to their previous one. All of which missed her. Then a ball took her out by hitting her in the back of the knee.
Four balls left.
"Until he's black, blue, and purple."
She got up, picked up the ball that just hit her, and wailed it at the ballista operator that shot it at her. The movement of her throw, by luck, had brought her out of the path of yet another ball. There were only three balls left to fire, three balls left to dodge.
Furia figured she could do it.
Furia knew she could do it.
One of their ballista operators was feeling the pain of a rubber ball in the face right now. It was glorious.
"Take that you S.o.b!"
Then the other ballistas fired the last three balls, and she went running away from her current position. Avoiding the balls entirely in an elementary manner. She then told each operator to go fornicate with themselves quite vigorously with hand gestures.
Furia, had bested this training course test with a very bad hangover. Take that engineers!

She guessed that getting some one to dodge like their life depended on it was an effective way to get them to utilize their agility. This was the idea that Halenmur came to conclude while standing in them middle of the intimidating balistaes directly aimed at her. Though of course the other thought came to mind a little too late...
"uhmmmm..... are you sure this is completely saf-" the first ball fired and grazed her shoulder, with enough sense to jerk back and to the side, she narrowly dodged the lightning fast projectile! She could feel how much force was applied in such a shot, and knew full well that if she'd gotten hit, it would do more than just sting a little, as the engineer told her before they began. 9 more balls where fired, each following the next in rapid succession! Halenmur danced, twirled, and did every thing she could to barely dodge the insanity thrown at her!
"AHHHHHH! NO! STOP! WAIT! AGHHH! HAAA- OOF!" she took one directly to the stomach after five more where fired, the fifteenth being the one to make contact. The wind was momentarily knocked out of her, and thus she was silenced all together. Though the balls kept firing, another five blasted at her simultaneously. She did the only possible move in such a situation, and that was to roll in her bunched forward state. Thus in twisting in to a side somersault, she continued to hold her stomach, coming to her feet to gasp for air...
"ehhh... Urp" she held her mouth feeling as though she was ready to throw up... no time, ten more rounds where fired, the first shot she had to dive from her current position, rolled to avoid three more, and the remainder six she hurled herself in to an all out sprint to keep from getting pegged.
It indeed was effective training... new or not, it got people moving, as was the intent it seemed.
So Halenmur didn't stop! not after the thirty first, not after the fortieth. All that seemed to be need was her running for her life, ducking when needed, and rolling as required.
forty five came around, the last four she managed to over come by strafing back and forth. but being near to a wall, she had run out of room to run! thus she ducked! forty five flying over head, another though flew low, and was about near to striking her face, but she'd brought her arms up to guard it just in time. The ball slammed against her, carried her a few feet, and down she crashed with four more to deal with.. she rolled back on to he shoulders, which she forced back with the momentum, and sprung forward and over forty seven, and forty eight. Forty nine how ever was speeding towards her just as she ascended, and clipped her shoulder. This forced her to spin, fifty already let loose when forty nine hit. She was dizzy and winded at this point though. the every world around her a blur of colors.
Lucky her, one could say. She collapsed to her hands in knees just as fifty nearly took her in the head to knock her out. Panting, the balistaes ceased firing. wheezing, the head engineer came down from his position of overseeing the whole training. Thus with a smug little smile he reiterated, "See? just a little sting! good job!"
Oh boy, if Halenmur wasn't so sick to her stomach, and could walk straight, she'd show HIM a sting.

Arthur hefted one of the large rubber balls, testing it's weight. "So you're sure this thing'll work?"
"Absolutely. We've had a few testers in already, and it works fine. But we're still not done yet, so that's why you're here. Know the rules?" One of the gunners, who happened to be the ranking officer in the stadium.
Arthur looked out at the dirt-covered field and eyed the five different balistae that were going to be shooting the balls at him. "Yep, sounds like fun!"
The balls were heavy enough that they wouldn't be able to shoot far enough to hit him. This was going to be easy! He lifted the ball and tossed it to the gunner and stepped out into the arena.
"Don't start shooting till I'm in the center of the field!" Arthur called over his shoulder.
"We won't! But make sure you're ready!"
"I will!" Arthur began to jog towards the starting point, warming his muscles up, and preparing for dodging. He arrived and came to a stop, looking around.
"Alright, game's on! Fire!"
Whunk!
One of the rubber balls came sailing through the air with good aim, and good speed. Much better speed than Arthur thought possible. He jumped to the side, and the rubber ball flew past him with several inches to spare.
Okay, this is going to be harder than I thought. How many balls were there, total? 50? Arthur looked around, scanning for more balls.
Whunk! Whunk! Whunk!
Three more balls launched from different balistae, and Arthur had to dive to the ground, smearing his robe with dirt. Korinna just cleaned this! Arthur thought in annoyance. He pushed up off the ground, and began to run. A moving target was harder to hit then a stationary one. And he needed to be harder to hit if he was going to dodge 46 more balls.
Whunk! Suddenly, the fifth balista fired, and the ball shot in front of him, and he ran into it. It was aimed low in order to hit his legs, and he was sent to the ground again, rolling several times. Korinna is going to be so mad when she sees me.
Whunk! Whunk! Two more balls fired as he started to get up. Wham!
"OW, GEEZ!!" One hit him square in the butt and send him flying face-first into the dirt again. The second ball narrowly missed his arm and bounced on to the other side of the stadium. He crawled forwards as another ball came bouncing towards him. It was aimed a little too low, and hit the ground two feet ahead of him. It bounced and sailed over his head, landing again somewhere behind him.
That was way to close.
He got all the way up, and began running again, his left hand finding its way to his rear where he had been hit. As yet another two balls launched at him, he tried to count up how many were left. 40 I think, Arthur decided, ducking under the two rubber projectiles.
Then there was a lull in the firing, and Arthur slowed down, looking around. All the balistae were repositioning slightly, and Arthur swallowed. Maybe this really wasn't such a hot idea. It sounded so fun, though!
Whunk! Whunk! Whunk! Whunk! Whunk!
All five balistae fired simultaneously, aiming around and at Arthur. He jumped to the side, dodging four of them, but the fifth caught him in the ribs and he was sent to the ground yet again.
"OW, HEAL!" Arthur shouted through clenched teeth. He pushed himself up, and gave the rubber ball a good kick, sending it across the stadium. "... Shield!" Arthur called, casting the spell on himself.
"Wait a second! Hold fire, hold fire! Arthur, you can't do that, take the spell off!"
"But it hurts to get hit!!"
"Then don't get hit!"
Arthur scowled angrily and did as commanded. "There, it's down!"
[limegreen]"Good, now OPEN FIRE!"[/limgreen]
Another five balls leapt out at him, and Arthur dropped flat again. He was already dirty, another layer wouldn't hurt that much. All the balls missed, and Arthur let himself grin. Only 30 left.
He got up and started running again. They fired in unison again, and Arthur backpedaled, dodging them all. "HA HA!"
Whunk! Whunk! Whunk! Whunk!
Whunk!
Arthur applied the same trick again, except jumped right. However, he didn't take into account the delayed fire of the fifth balista, and he got solidly hit in the left shoulder. He staggered, clutching his arm, and started running blindly. That made 4 hits! The rules said only 5 were allowed! He would be so mad if he failed this test!
Three more balls came at him, but they were ill-aimed, and were lost behind him. The next two came at him from the frontal direction, and he dodged to the left. Both passed by with a little room to spare. Twenty left!
Wham! One of the balistae had reloaded extra quick and fired again, landing another blow to his legs. He shouted a quick heal spell to kill the pain, and began to roll as the next four balls came sailing down at him. They all collided and bounced off each other, flying in all directions.
He got to his feet and began to run towards one of the launch points. If he could get close enough to the wall, he might be able to get clear of two of the weapons. Another round of balls came at him and he slid backwards onto the ground, and they all flew past him. One of the balls bounced off the walls and came flying back at him, but he rolled out of the way, barely escaping it again. I've been hit five times now. I CAN'T get hit any more! There's only 15 left!
He got up again and ran to the wall, reaching the somewhat safe zone. The five balistae adjusted to reach him and fired. He was right, two of them weren't able to hit him. They shot past with a good 5 feet between him and the balls. The three other ones had to shoot across the entire length of the field and it was easy to dodge the slowing spheres.
Arthur waited, but another round wasn't fired. They were waiting for him to move, knowing they couldn't reach him there. Arthur gritted his teeth and thought. This wasn't going to be very good. 10 balls left and no room for hits. He'd have to do this very carefully. He took a moment to catch his breath, then charged forwards. He stopped suddenly, as he heard the two closer ones launch their second to last balls. However, they aimed to far forwards, and they flew by without trouble.
Arthur started forwards again, running to the center of the field. The three other ones fired, and as the balls closed in on him, Arthur dropped. He got up a moment later, just in time for the final barrage. This was it, he either won or lost. Five balls versus one boy. The odds were against him. Or, maybe not.
"HRAH!" Arthur jumped up in the air as high as he could, bringing his legs up to his chest. The balls collided beneath him and bounced off in all directions. He landed on his back with a thud.

THE BALLS ARE INERT GUYS!
Never mind what he was doing here, he had just been wandering around and got lost, well, OK, he was not wandering, he was being a nosy mother fucker, but you get the point. Thus, when he came upon this odd place, brow cocked, looking around he marveled. "Wow... its huge." Deja vu? Sure. The sight of a black rubber ball on the ground though further intrigued him, and to it he strolled over and picked it up, heaving it up and down a bit. It was a little heavy, but not strong enough to do any damage to anything.."What the hell kind of cannon ball is this?" He asked continuing to toss it up and down, only to have another one of those things come whizzing by, just above his head, causing his hair to shift about in the wind it left in its wake.
"The fuck?" Vulgar as always, it should have not been a surprise. He saw the second one incoming though, catching the ball he was tossing up and down. He seized it tight and then slammed it into the oncoming hunk of rubber sending it tumbling away, only to hear a maniacal laugh. "....thats not good." At this point he was sent running for the other end of the room, about ten of those things winging by him, almost catching flesh as he did so. Then. Without warning. It stopped. "Ehh...?" A quizzical look on his face, brow arched up as high as it could be without looking like an utter nutter. Another slammed into the wall behind him, looks like someone did not get the memo as that one SUNK IN. "WHAT THE FUCK!?"
Oh yea. That one was loud, very, very, VERY, loud. He rolled away getting winged in the shoulder by one of a barrage of nine, all rolling into the wall behind him, picking up another in the process. The oncoming of a wall meant one thing. He could not dodge, and well, he could not exactly let them pummel the hell of him. Cocking arm back, a loud yell, and HADOKEN! He fired one off, aiming to connect with the two at the bottom in a direct angle with the two of ten coming inwards, hitting the things just as he jumped backwards, foot landing square on the wall and propelling himself upwards through the small hole he had made, rolling and tucking in air, just narrowly avoiding danger.
It was not the end of course, eighteen more lay in waiting, ready to destroy him, and as he landed, deft foot coming solid and strong onto that ground another bounced off the floor to his right, drawing his attention. A voice, one which he could not quite point out the direction to flooded the room. "Seems brute force is not going to work.. fine fine. Precision it is." Ok. Now that did not sound good to him, these guys were not done, and now they were going to be aiming even CLOSER on his nads? What the fuck! Whomever these guys were, he needed to find where they were and beat the fuck out of them.. if he did not get pummeled anyways.
A third hit him directly in the back, counting off to only leaving 16 in the hands of those devils, so far they had struck him three times, what was the problem in the craniums of these people? Were they that damn twisted, that they launched balls at peop... no. Shush. No pervert jokes. Its too easy. Instead. He took the high ground and rose back up to his feet, his back stinging. The problem now? They were not rapid fire, so it made it harder if you'd believe that, to get a feeling for where they were coming from, as they had been coming pretty much as fast as they could be reloaded, but now they were random in timing, with little warning.
LEFT! Narrow dodge, as the thing almost tore his wrist off, just barely having shifted out of the way and found that thing tumbling away with a bit of a twist and a roll to it. Another putting him off balance and now he was practically running backwards just to stay up. Thats when they all came flying at him from all sides, rubber was flying through the air like this was a god damn looney bin. WHOOSH! His nose felt the sonic boom of one of the many cannon balls soaring at him, as it passed a mere inch in front of it, and almost gave him a bit of a speed lash. Another came flying behind his legs as he was running back, him almost running into it. Then. Without warning.
MOBY DIIIICK! Sexual jokes aside. The thing hit him with enough force to send his off balanced ass cart-wheeling away, only to grab that side as he lay on the ground. Thats FOUR times he had been struck by the unknown assailants. It was getting annoying, and so far he had not been able to pinpoint the direction they were coming yet, but he was beginning to wonder just how much ammo they had and how long this would go on. 11 left. 11 long gruesome dodges. An off aimed ball soared over head and slapped the wall behind where he would have been if he had been standing, then, without warning nine of the remaining ten poured from all sides, bouncing off walls, hitting the balls that had already shot.
It was like a chain reaction, but somehow, amidst it all he managed to avoid it like MC Hammer in a worn out 80's monologue. Either he stood, dazed by all of this, and tried to shake it free. He had survived. They had stopped, and with it, he was turning round and round, looking for where the hell the exit was, and just as he went to sprint for it. "BOOM! HEADSHOT!" Oh yea. It was a head shot alright, and it laid him the fuck out. He practically flipped as he hit the ground out cold, the fifth, and finally freebie he got had been wasted, but with it, so did their ammo.

Sigh.
More shit to deal with.
Instead of manual labor or taste testing experimental poison potions, he had to be set up with an experiment that would test his speed and reflexes.
Now, from what he'd been hearing about this thing, it wasn't as if people came at him with weapons, even wood ones. No. This shit...well, from one account, it was an obstacle course, but the remainder of the accounts dissmissed that theory, and called it instead: Death by Stinging Ballistae.
Lame name, I know, but that's what had reached Gun's ears, and thats what had stuck in his head.
Though this then begged the question: If they were firing giant arrows at people, how the FUCK did they sting?
And how the fuck did any one survive to tell the tale?
...Gunlase Sighed again as he entered the Training Grounds, which they had closed for the day in order to set this shit up and test the soldiers.
"I'm here for the Agility Course." He called out, entering the arena, stopping with one foot in the air when he caught sight of the monstrosity they had set up.
Gunlase of course had no idea what the fuck the giant wooden wall was about, but to those of us in the twenty-first century, it looked to be the side of a ship out of the seventeen or eighteen hundreds, what with the doors that lifted to reveal cannons and such.
Blinking and thinking to himself [The fuck?] He walked further, and more cautiously "Ah, good. Stand right over there." A thin, balding man poked his head out from the top of the huge wall, and then a stringy arm, pointing to the far wall.
"...Oh...kay...." He said to himself, walking over to where the man had indicated.
He stood facing the large construct as one of the small doors opened. "Ready?"
"I...guess."
FWING!!
The bolt was released and a huge black ball shot out of the hole straight for Gunlase's face. Shouting, he whipped his torso to the side, avoiding it entirely. It hit the back wall and bounced off, landing in his hands when he turned around. "The fuck?"
"He turned his back, Fire!"
Gun whipped back around and chucked the light, black ball right for the same hole. The two balls impacted and went in separate directions.
Panting to himself, he grabbed his chest. A cold sweat breaking on his face.
"Alright, open the rest."
All the gates opened and Gunlases jaw hit the floor.
In came number three. Fwing!
Straight for him again, same hole as the other two. Gun repeated his first movement and leaned to his right, avoiding the ball.
Four: The gate below the first one was next to fire. It came for his feet and he hopped over it with ease.
"Heh, this is easy. That all you got?"
"Enough warm up, hit him."
Gunlase bolted to his right as ball after ball came sailing at him. He counted subconsciously, Five, Six, Seven, Eight.
Nine came and they caught on, firing a step ahead of him. He skidded and dropped to his back, ducking under it by an inch before his spine hit the ground. The ground level one there fired and he rolled to his right, popping off the ground just in time to avoid the tenth.
He was quick to his feet as he bolted back left, careful of the timed ones.
Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen in the same manner as five to eight, then Fourteen and Fifteen came out at the same time. Same column, but bottom and middle rows.
Gunlase jumped high and just barely cleared them, the higher one clipping his leg. That was the highest he'd ever jumped in his life... and it still grazed him.
"One."
"Huh?"
They ceased fire for a moment.
"You can only get hit five times. Get hit six, and you fail."
"WHAT!?!?" He screamed, standing square.
"The fuck happens if I fail?"
"You get kicked out of the Fordeth Defence Force."
"Oh fuck that."
This time they fired five. Sixteen through Twenty came in a cross pattern.
The Column infront of Gun had all three, then the two middles on either side. They all fired at once.
[How many fucking people do they have back there?] He thought as he spun clock wise, ducking under the one that had fired to his left as he avoided the three that had been coming on his line of standing.
Just then, he was tempted to hurl a fireball at one of the holes on the wall, but decided better and bolted to his left.
They spared their balls as he bolted to the wall, firing one ahead of him. He went to jump and dive over it, when the fired one from the third tier as well.
He avoided twenty one, but twenty two clipped him in the ribs and he hit the ground rolling. "Two."
"Stinging Ballistae Indeed." He said as he ran for the far wall. Twenty three and twenty four were dodged before he lept and hit the wall feet first. Another three fired at him on the same column as he launched away from the wall, ensuring all three missed.
He grinned.
"How many are there!?" He yelled to the man behind the demented war machine.
"Fifty total." As twenty eight zoomed past his head.
Glad he'd been keeping count by some chance miracle. "I REALLY need to get faster." He cursed his low speed. As he bolted back and forth, his speed kept him just ahead, but it was his brain that had saved him from already getting nailed over a dozen times. He could see most of them coming given the over thirty feet between him and the wall of doom. And from there, he could dive and jump and spin and side step.
Actually, as was about to be demonstrated, it was a good thing he wasn't faster. As he'd be too fast to do this:
Twenty nine had been a misfire and launched well behind him, but thirty came just ahead of him. No time to dive or duck, and dropping was NOT good, he stopped short, his boots skidding on the dirt floor.
An inch short, and he shot off again. Thirty through thirty six were all dodged it much the same way, and Gun had been running back and forth for a full five minutes now.
Panting and slowing, "Fuck...This...." He said, hands on his knees.
"No breaks kid." As another fired.
Gun dipped his head to the side. He'd been running all over the place for nothing, and he realized it now. Of course, that only pissed him off.
Thirty eight fired, and Gun side stepped.
"You wanna be slick huh?" A burst of nine shot out, covering a three by three block.
Tired and iritated, Gun lifted his hand and shot a large fireball right in the middle. It exploded on the one dead center and the splash launched the others all over, none hitting gun. "HEY!! YOU CAN'T DO THAT!!"
"Why not? The military is about surviving and getting the mission done right? Well, Magic is part of what I do so fuck off!"
"YOU LITTLE SHIT!! GET HIM, I DON'T WANT HIM TO BE ABLE TO WALK OUT OF HERE!!"
...Oh shit.
That was basically Gunlases thought as all the ballistae fired randomly. It seemed that even the ones on the far end were aiming at him. This was far more than fifty as they began to rapid fire the black balls.
Gun shot to the left, launching several bolts, lancing some of the balls, splitting them in half and launching them into their bretheren.
Hit twice more by a glancing blow and one dead in the chest that he simply didn't see, the bombardment faded and Gun stood panting. "That it asshole!?"
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN WE DON'T HAVE ANY MORE!?!? GO OUT THERE AND GET THE ONES WE ALREADY FIRED DAMNIT!!"
"Go to hell! You just fired a thousand of the fucking things at me and I only got hit four times! I beat your little game you prick!"
The stringy man continued to curse and yell, and Gun sat there for a few more seconds, hands on his knees again, before limping out. His adrenaline had faded. Pain. Lots of pain.
Show no mercy. Think not on how others judge you. Your greatness will silence them all.

Caia surveyed the arrangement of ballistae rather doubtfully.
“So this is supposed to make me faster?” she inquired, trying to keep the hesitation out of her voice.
“Were you listening at all?” The engineer in charge of the experiment responded rudely. “All you have to do is dodge fifty rubber balls. Not that hard to comprehend.”
“I don’t mean to be rude, but how exactly does this experiment measure the increase to my speed?”
This was just about the only polite comment she could make of the lengthy list of questions that flitted through her mind.
“Well, you are being rude so just shut up and get out there.” The engineer barked, most likely annoyed that anyone would question the validity of his experiment. Biting back a reply, Caia complied.
As she reached the center of the of the field she began to call,
“I’m ready.”
However, before the words finished leaving her mouth they were cut off by a rubber ball aimed straight toward her face. Blinking in surprise, Caia barely managed to duck to the side and avoid the ball and then was forced to contort her body in order to dodge the other three that were fired just after.
As soon as those three passed Caia attempted to straighten herself out, but was immediately forced to throw herself into motion again as five balls came zipping toward her simultaneously. She evaded the first four but as she ducked under the fourth, a fifth aimed for her knees caught her in the stomach with enough force to knock her back. Until she was hit Caia had no idea just how hard the balls were being pelted at her.
Falling hard Caia was forced to roll in order to escape several more balls until she could jump back to her feet. Realizing that it would be beneficial to know how many balls had been hurled at her, Caia quickly tallied the ones that had been already hurled and made note to count the
“Get hit by five and you’re done.” The engineer called from behind the ballistae.
Caia barely had time to be annoyed before another set of balls was flung at her and she was forced to begin dodging and ducking again.
As time went on, Caia found herself sinking into a sort of pattern, her mind almost unconsciously able to control her body without having to think at all. Not to say that it wasn’t broken occasionally.
The twenty-second caught the edge of her temple, making her disoriented long enough for her to also fail to dodge another ball aimed for her shoulder. Caia couldn’t help the short burst of nervousness that rushed through her as the ball collided with her shoulder. It would be all too embarrassing to fail. Once she regained her concentration, however, Caia managed to avoid the balls without error for quite a while.
It wasn’t until the forty-fourth ball that she was hit again, the rubber sphere barely glancing off her arm which had been thrown out to help maintain her balance during a particularly tricky maneuver. The impact stung but it awakened Caia from a lapse of concentration that she hadn’t realized she’d fallen into.
Several seconds later, the fiftieth ball whooshed to the right of her. Although she had been counting, her body didn’t want to stop moving and for several long moments she stayed tense, just waiting for the next ball to come flying toward her.
“Four hits.” The engineer grumbled, not sounding too pleased that she’d passed. “Get out of here.”
Caia nodded and began to exit the field. As she did so, she caught a barely perceptible nod from the engineer, but to whom? Acting on instinct, Caia turned to the side in time to see a rubber ball shoot by, not a half inch from her nose.
Forcing herself to keep a steady pace while looking out for more attacks, Caia finished making her way off the field. Once the ballistae could not fire without being in danger of hitting one of their own, Caia went to talk to the engineer.
“Excuse me,” she began, “But I believe you said the test contained fifty balls while you shot fifty-one at me.”
“Well, what do you want me to do about it?” the engineer snarled. “What’s done is done.”
Realizing that there was no arguing with the man, Caia decided that it would be better not to try. She couldn’t change anything and it was obvious that the engineer was not going to reprimand the man who had fired the extra shot at her when he’d most likely ordered it himself.
Instead she simply wished him well, a comment that was received with a snort of disbelief. Caia had found that being polite to some people agitated them more than being argumentative would.
As she set off toward her home, bruises already beginning to form she realized that perhaps this strange idea had helped her after all; she had dodged that final, unexpected ball.

Sungale knew that she was slow. As a normal young lady of her build, her physical agility was… roughly average, she would suppose. For a soldier of the military, however, she was about as fast as a zombie with it's limbs chopped off. Therefore, when fighting alone against a zombie with all of it’s limbs, she had the feeling that there wasn’t a very high chance that she would come out of the encounter unscathed. It was time to do some major physical training, and she knew just where to start.
What have I gotten myself into…?
…Or, so she had originally thought.
Sungale’s blue eyes stared in awe and a bit of fear at the arrangement of ballistae within the training area, all which were aiming right in the middle of one particular area. Would that have to be… where she stood? No, certainly not. She couldn’t possibly survive right in the middle of that fray, certainly not! With ballistae shooting right at her?! No, certainly not! They wouldn’t possibly require her to put herself in such a dangerous position. Perhaps since she was, for the most part, a mage, they might put her a bit… off-center. Yes, that would make sense! They certainly wouldn’t make her stay in the middle like that!
“Hey, girlie, stop standing around and staring like an idiot! Get over here and stand in the middle, we don’t got all day, y’know!”
The white mage/archer tensed for a moment, a little put-off by the harsh tone in the man’s voice before forcing her legs to move, walking over towards the men and their ballistae.
”Ah… S…Sorry. So I am supposed to… stand in the middle and dodge the… artillery? Are they mad of…”
“Rubber, of course. Don’t be dense, this is a training exercise, not a death sentence! Though if you don’t be careful, it might become that…”
At the menacing tone in the man’s voice and the grins adorning his subordinates’ faces, Sungale gulped and began to make her way towards the middle again.
Merciful, benevolent goddesses, please guide me through this time of—
”TARGETINRANGE FIRE!!”
Before she could comprehend what was going on, Sungale was hit square in the back with rubber cannon fire. She cried out and fell forward, landing on her hands and knees. She turned her head around and glared at the one who had presumably shot at her.
“N…Now wait a moment, I wasn’t—”
She rolled over and dodged as another sailed over her head.
“—quite ready for—”
As she started to get back on her feet again, another one sailed over her head. Her face tensed as she realized that she wasn’t even being heard out. Well, to be fair, they were just doing their job, and were they an army of undead, they probably wouldn’t hear them out, either.
She managed to leap to the side from her crouching position as another two attempted to shoot their way towards her, one barely clipping her foot. She winced as she landed on her stomach, not having enough time to nurse her foot before she pushed herself up into a sitting position, very narrowly missing another ball as it bounced by her.
It was just about at this point that she had about enough time to get to her feet with a slight limp as they reloaded. What was this now, six balls down...? That would make it... about forty-four more to go... and she had already got hit twice.
...This is not good at all. At this rate, I shall fail before I even dodge twenty…!
They were very quick to reload, and already, they were starting to fire again, now pacing their shots so that the white mage was under constant fire. Gritting her teeth, she ducked as another barely went over her head, and started running to the side, dodging three more rubber balls as they zoomed past her from little more than an inch away. One of the trainers shot right as she ran in his direction, but she managed to duck down just in time, it barely touching the ends of her hair.
…Wait a second… It touched my hair… So… does that count as a hit? I suppose it shouldn’t, since it didn’t hit my body, but technically, hair is a part of the body… Oh, no, now I’m confused… How many did I dodge so far…?! If I can’t keep track of these sort of things, then how am I supposed to keep a clear mind in battle?
“Ah, excuse me, but does it count if you hit my— OW!”
Pain coursed through her as she fell backwards, holding her stomach from the blow. She didn’t even register the other balls that flew past her head as she landed on her back.
W…Why… they just ignored me! They didn’t even give me enough time to finish my question…
…No…
…No, it does not matter. Who cares what those dirty bastards do?! They want to play dirty, do they…?! Well, I’ll show them!
With an angry shout, she leaped back up, dodging the rubber artillery like a woman possessed. Not a single movement was controlled or thought-out, but seemed to stem from sheer instinct. Within her mind, all she could think about was dodging all of this artillery and to beat all of these dirty, cheating sons of whores at their own damn game.
"Think you can play dirty with a fucking LADY, you bastards?!"
At that moment, she got hit right in the forehead, making a nice red mark in its' wake. Sungale's death-glare met the taunting eyes of the main trainer.
"I'm insulting a LADY, now? Well, then, if ya see this lady, wherever she is, tell her that I say she can kiss my— Ack!"
Sungale had taken the ball he shot at her and thrown it back at him, hitting him right in the nose. At this point, she was bending back, narrowly avoiding the last few balls as they whizzed past her body. Short of breath and wild-eyed, Sungale looked around her as the trainers tried to look for any more ammo, of which there was none. Her face calmed down, and a small, sweet smile appeared on her face.
"...D...Did I do it?"
"Yeah, yeah, just get outta here. Gods, why the hell do all the women in this army have to be temperamental bitches...?"
Not hearing the last part, Sungale let out a loud sigh and slowly got up, limping her way out of the training room. She did it... She actually passed. Question was... did she feel any faster? She supposed that she would find out... right after she took a nice, long, hot bath. She was positively filthy after rolling around on the ground so much.

Apparently the Brass didn't think Moris was fast enough. Moris thought he was plenty fast, what with all his practice at running away from the enemy. So they ordered him to go to this training center, and get shot at. Moris didn't like getting shot at because that would hurt. He liked to do the shooting. With lightning, fireballs, ice bolts. Those sorts of things. But being shot at wasn't on his agenda, never was.
Somehow he was always being shot at.
"So fifty rubber balls?" Moris asked.
"Yes." The trainer said.
"And I can only get hit by five?"
"Right."
"I'm out of here."
"Oh no. Not this time Moris, see I have your written orders right here. And you were ordered by a superior to take this training. If you went against those orders, you'd be up for court martial, jail time, and possibly execution. We both know you don't want that."
"..... fine." Moris sighed, then started to walk towards the middle of the area. He didn't like how all those turrets were mounted on a wall, and they could all fire down at him very easily, and how there wasn't any place to take cover. It also scared him now that he was being ordered to train. He didn't like being ordered to train. That would just make getting out of work more difficult!
When Moris got into the middle of the area, they fired at him. And boy did they let loose. Suddenly Moris found himself under attack, and he ducked, dove, and rolled out of the way of incoming rubber missiles. Those projectiles spelled doom for him, if he was hit more then five times, he would fail miserably, and probably be executed for not following orders.
"NOT IN THE FACE!" Moris yelled as he ran away from the middle area, and began to turn as he ran. Balls whizzed past him, and he just did what he did best. Flee. He fled from the balls, ran the hell away from them. Out maneuvering the shots. If there was anything Moris was good at, it was running away. This training only improved his fleeing capabilities.
After about five minutes of firing. Moris had passed with flying colors. Not hit once, it was either extraordinary luck, or he was an expert at running away.
"So.. how did you do it?" The trainer asked.
"Do what?"
"Not get hit."
"I'm badass at escaping pain, battle, enemies, and just about anything that can do me harm."

”Alright, Recruit, you have to dodge 50 rubber balls that will be shot from modified ballistae! You can only get hit five times, any more and you fail! Understand?!” Good thing Tristan was wearing a mask or his face would have been covered in spit. The drill sergeant stood in front of him, shouting unnecessarily. In contrast to the way the training officer talked – or yelled – Tristan merely nodded in response. The task did not seem that hard. All he had to do was dodge a few objects, right?
Before beginning the training, Tristan did a little warm-up, which consisted of jumping jacks and push-ups. After his cardio got going and he felt limber, the officer began the test. ”Commence firing!” Tristan was amazed how some people could maintain their voice without losing it when they shouted all the time. However, he did not have much longer to dwell on the thought because he heard several loud and thunderous canon fires and watch as four dodge balls sped his way.
Crap! Tristan jumped through the air and narrowly missed the dodge balls by hitting the ground. This may be somewhat harder than I thought originally. The firing never ceased when he hit the ground. Thus, he had to quickly get up before numerous dodge balls assaulted him. He got up and began to run around as the thunderous roar of the ballistae continued.
He was pretty sure the count was up to twenty now, but he was not sure. However, what he did know was that because he let a thought slip in there, he got hit with two dodge balls. Dammit! During this task, he had to keep interfering thoughts on a minimum because he could not suffer getting hit to much more if he wanted to pass. Consequently, he dove to the ground again as three more dodge balls zoomed past his head. This was getting intense.
Tristan did not know how long it had been, or how many dodge balls had been fired, and he did not want to think about it because he had to focus on this task and not failing. Hence, he continued to do his best to dodge and not get hit. At one instant, he stood facing a ballistae and it fired a dodge ball. Before he was about to move, he dodge ball seemed to transform into a jagged spear; just like the one that pierced his father’s throat, killing him. He stood there wide eyed and got hit directly in the head. He literally flew backwards a few feet. The pain was severe and he began to tear up; however, he was not crying because of the ball, but because of the vision and remembrance of his father.
Though he needed a moment to recover, the ballistae did not seem to be giving him a break and the relentlessly fired. A moment of anger surged through Tristan’s veins and his mana seemed to boil inside of him. As five dodge balls were nearing him, his hand made a sweeping motion and a Fireball shot from his hand, colliding with each ball, destroying it.
”Recruit, no magic!” The training officer yelled angrily, yet Tristan did not care. He was pissed. Though, he channelled that anger into completing this test. They were on the fortieth dodge ball, so ten more were left. The men working the ballistae seemed to be getting desperate now, trying to make him fail, as they fired continuously at him with low accuracy. Nevertheless, one managed to slip past Tristan’s guard and hit him in the thigh.
In the end, he was only hit four times; he passed. The training officer did not say anything as Tristan left the facility. He was still partially emotional from the flashback, however, he would manage as he made his way home to relax and forget his past like usual.
