Coran twirled his crushing axe in his hand, so far they haven't came across anything, that could either be a really good thing or a really bad thing, nothing was sure in these dark days. With his free hand he reached for his flask and took a gulp from it. No it was only water, it's not that he didn't have his ale flask but drinking ale now wouldn't be the smartest thing to do.

"How much farther do you reckon the river is?"

Coran only asked to make up for the silence, he knew that Tristan was not much of a conversational type and he didn't know the other two enough to strike up a sober conversation with. So he stuck with small talk.

His hazel eye continually scanned the surrounding forest for any movement; however, the only one he caught was out of the corner of his eye which was Coran spinning his axe and taking a drink. Tristan did not mind, though, Coran’s actions were not very distracting. What truly puzzled Tristan was the fact that they had not run into anything yet; nevertheless, he wasn’t complaining.

Coran broke the silence, which made Tristan think about how rude he was being by not talking and just remaining quiet. ”I am not exactly sure, but I do know that it will not be much longer.” Tristan looked up to the sun and guessed the time. It was nearly 3pm, not bad, they were making good time.

A slight breeze rolled through the trees, but nothing out of the ordinary. Silence had once again settled in, so Tristan thought he would revive it this time. ”If you don’t mind me asking, how goes the mercenary life?”

Coran nodded first, at least they weren't too far away from the lake, that would mark as check point for their exploring. He then chuckled when Tristan asked him about the life of a merc.

"Slow. Zombie slow. I can barley find any work these days and my bar tab is piling. The military isn't helping either taking all the good jobs, I'm thinking of traveling to Kel'alee they say you can make good money in the arena there."

He wasn't really complaining that the military is being rough on mercs but it's that everyone gives them and it's for a good reason too, it's no doubt the military is more trusted than some mercenary.

"What about you? How's the military treating ya?"

An insane question popped into Tristan’s mind and it was more of a joke, but he asked it, nonetheless. ”Coran... Have you ever thought of not drinking...?” Luckily, his attempts to keep a straight-face could not be seen through his mask; however, after several moments, he burst into a fit of uncontrollable laughter. Quite resuming his typical composure, it was too late and Marissa just had to throw a comment of hers in there: ”Aw! Tristy is laughing.” Her tone was babyish, but joking. Tristan tried his best to ignore her, but she still managed to make him smile and she knew it. So, she was now happily bouncing along.

Tristan knew this question would be coming, though it was not a bad thing. ”Well, since I have joined the army, I have definitely become stronger. I can feel it, especially my magic. I can feel the mana surging through my veins and I truly enjoy it. Though, I still have trouble controlling it at times.” His favourite spell out of everything had to by far be Bolt. He enjoyed the unpredictability of it and it uncontrollable nature. Tristan could not help but let a Bolt loose on a tree not too far away from them, causing it to split right in half and catch fire. However, the fire was as quickly extinguished as it had appeared.

Kicking himself inside, he did not mean for his display to brag about his powers of anything. He just simply enjoyed the purity of magic and he took pleasure in using it as often as he could. He hoped Coran did not take it the wrong way.

Coran burst out laughing, his laughter boomed throughout the silent forest, firstly because of Tristan's outrageous suggestion and then again at Tristan's nickname. Coran would be sure to use it against him if Tristan tried to sneak up on him again.

"You'd have better luck asking a fish not to swim, or a bird not to fly. Drinking is part of my nature."

Coran watched Tristan's display with a nod, he didn't think of it a showing off but as proving his point. It was without a doubt that Tristan surpasses the Barbarian when it comes to black magick.

"Aye, magick really comes in handy during combat, but sometimes you just have to rely on your weapon"

He swung his crushing axe at the air to prove his point.

Amidst the chatter that went on between the Masked Ranger and the Barbarian, beasts trailed them some distance back. A small pack. Five wolves, and no discernible alpha. There was indeed a leader, but from just looking at them, one wouldn't be able to tell just which that was.

This was due to the distinct lack of Fel wolf, luckily for the travelers. Not so luckily, was that the wolves were still sneaky creatures, and would be close enough to strike before the lot noticed, particularly with them as mirthful as they were.

After some distance, four of the wolves jumped from the brush, the leader staying back behind a large bush.

The easiest pray was targeted first, The girl and the masked man. Two bit and clawed at each. The others would need more coordinated assault after the stragglers were dead.

Five Wolves

Two wolves each attacked Marissa and Tristan, 4 strikes each for legs and lower torso.

Tristan nodded in agreement in regards to Coran’s comment on weaponry and strength. Though Tristan was mighty with magic, he always relied on his bow first and foremost. Before he could make a vocal reply, the three of them were taken by surprise – Markus not as much because he was actually scouting instead of conversing.

Two stealthy wolves lunged at Tristan and he was quick to react, though not quick enough to stop one wolf from making contact with his right leg. Grunting in slight pain, he quickly got over it by thinking and realizing that he had received worse. He rapidly grabbed an arrow from his quiver and shot it down onto the wolf’s head that was clamped onto his leg. Before he finished his assault, he launched an Ice Bolt at the second wolf’s body.

Markus collided with the first wolf that attacked Marissa, shoving it to the side, trying to overpower it. In the midst of his pushing, he drew his sword and dagger from his waist. His left hand went to pierce the wolf’s side while his right hand went down overtop the beast to stab it in the back. Meanwhile, the second wolf had made it past Markus and went to attack Marissa. Its strong jaws latched to her leg, causing her to let out a shriek of pain. A quick gesture helped prevent any further excessive damage as she cast Shield. Before she proceeded to attack the wolf on her now, she quickly healed Tristan, whom she noticed was taking a bit of damage. Following that, she attempted to smash down her mace atop of the wolf’s head.

Cursing himself for not paying attention, Coran turned around to face the wolves that had attacked Tristan because they were the closest to him. Coran swung the crushing axe in a downwards arc to catch to the wolf right in it's belly with the hammer end. Following up Coran would bring axe side down on the seconds wolf's back.

"Tristan are you alright?"

Without waiting for an answer, Coran would launch two fireballs at the other two wolves one for each.

To be honest, the first beast was over killed. Hard. The arrow had already dropped it, and the hammer axe of doom just split it right in half, pouring blood and guts all over the place. The second wolf had hopped aside of the magic, but was owned by the Crushing Axe, scrawny body sent flying as it was killed in one shot.

The wolf that had attacked Marissa dodged the mace, and had jumped in to bite at her thigh. If contact was to be made, it would be done before a fireball scorched its side, causing it to only bite down on the leg harder as the splash of the fireball cooked Marissa and Markus if he was within six feet. Same thing went for wolf four, only this time, it was a sure thing that both the girl and the Drow got cooked.

Friendly fire is not cool, guys. Get it together!

If the fifth wolf had been more intelligent, it probably would have laughed at the situation. But instead, it simply rushed out of the brush behind Markus, and jumped high, looking to bite the Drow on the neck, and end him in seconds.

Three Wolves left

Tristan did not reply to Coran’s mid-battle question because it would distract him. At the moment, it not a good thing because both Markus and Marissa were getting ganged up on; thus, he had to react without hesitation. His reaction had to be strong and swiftly calculated to end these beasts quickly. Consequently, he launched two wooden arrows at the wolf clamping down on Marissa’s thigh; one arrow’s destination was the wolf’s leg, while the other sped towards its rib cage. He shot a single arrow at the second wolf’s shoulder. After firing that arrow, he summoned a Mud Shot from behind the wolf, hoping to blindside it by hitting its opposite side.

Marissa had taken some serious damage, from both friend and foe. Momentary anger grew in her core as she was burned; however, after a moment, she realized it was a mistaken and everyone makes them. As the wolf bit down hard on her thigh, she could feel its teeth sink into her vital veins. She needed to do something quickly before she became overwhelmed and past out. Hoping the wolf would soon detach, she focus on her wound, healing it slightly. As well, she cast another Heal on Markus who seemed to have received some damage.

Before Markus could continue his attack on the fourth wolf, another jumped out from behind some bushes, surprise attack him. The wolf had leaped into the air and was coming down to snap at his throat, but Markus would not let a fatality such as that occur. Thus, he quickly attempted to stab the oncoming wolf in the neck with both his sword and dagger, hopefully stopping the looming jaws of the wolf from clasping him.

Marissa: -18.2
Markus: -7.5

"Fuck!"

Coran cursed himself yet again for his mistake, damn it this wasn't good he had to act fast. Coran charged the wolf that was attacking Marissa and dealt it a mighty blow to the back, he was pretty pissed off at himself at the moment he wanted to make it up by destroying the wolves.

Coran moved to the fourth wolf before it had a chance to attack Markus again while he was fending off the fifth wolf. He brought down the crushing axe hard on the wolf's head aiming to splatter it.

Why is it that the Rogues always seemed to be the most efficient monster killers?

Hmm...

To sum things up, the wolves died. Hard.

To explain things:

Number three was already dead on its feet when Coran's axe came and lanced off its lower body, leaving its upper half still attached to the girls leg. Number four was gimping about from the damage it took from the fireball. And number five had its head almost entirely chopped off by the sword and dagger. Spine severed, ninety pounds of wolf still pressed towards the Drow, blood spraying everywhere in copious amounts.

All dead.

Drops:

Greatsword: A standard Greatsword.
-Damage: 50
-Stat Req: 10 str, 7 Agi.

8 Dragonfruit.

The wolves were finally downed, though they made one bloody mess – literally. Tristan was relatively fine, while Marissa still had a half of a wolf attached to her and Markus was soaked in blood. They were certainly required a good cleaning later on. Taking a fairly clean cloth, both Markus and Marissa wiped internal contents off their faces. After they collected themselves together, Markus noticed a nice looking blade that was somehow left behind by one of the wolves. He bent down, picking it up, and twirling it around. Looking at everyone, he asked, ”Mind if I have this?” Tristan nodded his head and Marissa squeaked an ”okay”. If Coran allowed it, Markus would have a new and stronger blade, which in the long run, would certainly help.

Scanning their mess, Tristan picked up a few pieces of Dragonfruit and tossed some to Coran. Nothing else of values lay around, so he looked to the company around him, ”Ready to continue on to the river?” The little battle they just had would probably be just a sample of what was awaiting them further in the forest. However, they could not back out not, they were just beginning.

Coran calmed down after the wolves have been reduced to a pile of gore and fur, his blood lust has been fed. Coran nodded at Markus when he asked about the blade, swords weren't really his style and he had all the power he needed in his crushing axe. He grabbed the dragon fruits that were thrown at him and put them in the dragon fruit bag.

"Alright, lets get moving."

Coran still felt a little embarrassed about the little accident with the fireball, he turned to Markus and Marissa, scratching the back of his head.

"I'm sorry about the fireball back there, I forgot about the area of effect."

With a smile that shone brightly against his dark skin, Markus took the sword and attached it to his side. He was excited because he would be able to work more efficiently now. Now that that was settled, Tristan began to head in the general direction of the river. Marissa and Markus followed behind him; however, they slowed down as soon as Coran began to talk to them.

"I'm sorry about the fireball back there, I forgot about the area of effect."

Marissa giggled loudly and replied, ”Don’t worry, both Marky and I have had far worse than that. Tristy really keeps us on our toes.” She giggled again, a cute little sound. Good thing Tristan was facing away from the all and he had a mask on because if not, they would have definitely seen his bright red face.

Changing the subject as they continued their determined pace through the forest, Tristan asked, ”Just out of curiousity, have you heard about Kel’alee?”
