Haunted Wood Patrol (CST) « Thread Started on Nov 4, 2009, 4:36pm »
(This patrol counts as ranger training.)
Furia was leading a hand full of men through the haunted woods. Just inside the haunted woods that is. They were practicing some light exercises to get used to fighting in such an uncomfortable environment. The team had set up camp with no fires, it was relatively dark out to begin with, and they needed the light, but it was better to fight in the dark then to lure their enemies to them.
If they lit up the area, they'd be asking for more heat than they could handle. Wendigos, Undead, maybe Demons, in great number.
When Furia had asked for permission to take this patrol out she received instructions to not light any fires or to make any aggressive moves. Considering that she was just a Bronze Knight, and that she was looking for an opportunity to get promoted, she didn't want to mess up this particular mission. She took their advice and instructions, and followed them to the letter.
Everyone operated off of hand signals, every operated off of stealth and everything was done with little to no light. Magitech visors helped in that regard. The team used them thoroughly to move around in the dark environment without stumbling over themselves and making more noise than necessary.
Furia used her silent step skill almost constantly, and she was almost constantly tired from the mana drain, but she didn't show it in front of the team of rangers. They had patrol exercises to go through. They started at the very beginning of the woods and had made their way maybe four hundred meters into the place, not trying to go too far for a sprint back to allied controlled lands.
At the current time, she moved silently on patrol, the plants and twigs and underbrush made no noise as she brushed against them or stepped on them. They practiced moving silently and hiding from enemy patrols. Because there were enemy patrols to hide from. Their orders were not to engage after all.
A hand full of skeletons of various types had passed them by on a patrol. She hid from them, and her team hid, expertly. They were not discovered at all, none of the bastards had any idea that they had passed by their prey without even knowing it. It was all too easy. All the training in the past several months had paid off.

The group had slip up to cover a wider area, and Furia found herself alone in the haunted woods, most likely surrounded by enemies that wanted to kill her. It didn't quite seem fair to them though, from what she had seen so far, enemy patrols were light and lighter still were the enemies that were in the patrols. Your usual skeletal scumbags were part of the patrols, maybe a couple of magi, and if they were lucky some heavies, but nothing bigger than that.
The part that was hard about moving through the haunted wood was that the woods were dead, and remaining unseen wasn't as easy as it could have been in a forest that was alive. The leaves were dead on the ground, and if it weren't for silent step, she would make all kinds of noise out of her own laziness to watch where she's walking.
As she walked off the beaten path with her bow out and arrow knocked she heard the rustling and crunching of leaves, she could smell the dead coming in her general direction. She turned on her heel and spirited herself away behind a tree. She stood as still as she could and waited for her enemies to pass her by. Furia looked over her shoulder after they had passed and counted them, taking note on how big the patrol was.
Several warriors, a couple archers, and a knight. Nothing she couldn't handle herself. The problem was, she thought, that they would alert whoever was commanding them to her presence in the woods if she went over there and took them out. After the skeletons were a safe enough distance away she left the cover of the tree and crossed the road, went up the embankment and continued to move west towards the rendezvous point.
If the woods weren't so very haunted, and dead, it would have been a nice place to settle and take a trip through. Yet the awful howl of the wendigo reached her ears, and dashed any of those hopes that this place would ever be the same again. The spirits were angry about the corruption that spread through the land like wildfire. Furia didn't like it either, but she was more concerned with one thing at the moment.
Stealth.
To survive in the wood without an encounter, that is what it means to be stealthy.

The team set up a new camp in the haunted woods in the western side, near the edge of the dark forest, also known as Skaraptica (A name stolen from Jul's tome). The team practiced their ranged combat abilities without giving themselves away, throwing knives, battle darts, and arrows. No magic, no sounds, Furia believed that some creatures could feel magic. Though she had no evidence of such a thing ever occurring it was a safe bet to make.
It had been a while since she had trained with the battle darts, she had found herself using them as opening weapons in many duels with officers that were of a much lesser rank than her own. She was a bronze knight, entirely capable of handling herself in the field, on her own, most of the time. In two of her recent matches she found herself putting her agility to the test more and more, though she was faster than many of her enemies, she liked to push herself. Flips, backflips, acrobatics of all kinds, she used them to avoid the arrows, magic, and other weapons of her enemies.
Now she used acrobatics as a method of assault. A forward flip and a double throw to hit a tree trunk. She rolled, came to her feet, spun and threw another one hitting the same tree. From that position she dipped, did a windmill away from the tree throwing a hand full of the battle darts, all of them hitting that respective tree trunk.
Once Furia got her momentum going she was practically unstoppable. Her flips were perfectly executed, as were her spins, and slides, and rolls and wheels. She showed through her grace with the sword and skill with acrobatics that she danced a lot as a child. Furia followed not the beat of her heart, but the beat of a thousand drums pulsing through her spirit. The shift in the beat allowed her to change directions on a whim, the shift in pace allowed her to speed up or slow down at will. Furia could throw her body farther than any of her comrades with her acrobatics.
She had ran up a tree, the metal boots making no noise from the silent step spell, pushed off of it's trunk and grabbed a strong branch, she flipped from it to another one, flipped around to squat above that branch and launched herself from the tree, flipping in midair to push herself farther than normal.
Furia landed on the solid earth, rolled and stepped into a light walk towards her equipment. They were going to get moving again.

The team wasn't too far from Skaraptica now. Instead of heading deeper, they had moved father west, reaching the Mallon river. They stopped at the river for the night, though it was always gloomy, and rested there. Furia had stood first watch of the night, then slept all the way through the night. She woke early that morning and put the gear on that she had taken off, then crawled from her tent and rolled it up. She had left Lan behind in Fordeth, they had an argument about it. The truth of the matter was that it was far too dangerous for him, her aide, to come along on a mission that he could not possibly have been prepared for.
She could remember the conversation very well;
"I hear you're leaving on a patrol mission. I'll be ready in a little bit, just give me an hour."
"You're not going."
"What? What do you mean I'm not going?"
"I mean you will not be coming along."
"That doesn't make any sense to me Furia. Haven't I always remained by your side through the hard times? Through the siege of sorath? Through countless battles? On border patrol even?"
"Yes, yes you have. Lan you're making this hard for me. We're going into the haunted wood, do you really think you're ready for that? Do you think you can move through that place, which is slowly succumbing to the corruption, without alerting the enemy to your presence? I wish you could come along Lan, I do. But I think you'll get yourself killed, and others hurt."
"Fine.. but you better come back. You have to come back to Fordeth alive."
"That's the only way I'd be coming back you know. If I die in the field you know what protocol is. Burn my body, strip my gear and bring it back to the capital. All officers that remain loyal die as heroes."
"Don't be so morbid about it."
"It's just the truth, Lan."
"Well, you'll come back anyway. Not just your armor, you will be in it. Promise me."
"I promise I'll return. Take care of yourself, I'll see you in a couple weeks."
Furia thought back to that day and that moment. She could feel the tears welling up inside her like a geyser, ready to burst. Furia felt quite a lot for her friend, but not in a romantic way, she loved him like a brother, and didn't want to die before fulfilling her promise. For the past week she had not said a word to anyone, she had only thought, and communicated through hand signals. As the team leader it was difficult to be sure that her commands were carried out this way, but there was no hand signal for emotional pain.

The day they crossed the river was a good day indeed, Furia got to try out an item she had been longing to use since she got it off the Air elemental in Darthak. The amulet she received, the wind turn amulet, allowed her to breathe in dangerous environments. She had put it around her neck and took the other amulet off, then stepped into the water, shrugged at her teammates, and kept going. Eventually she found herself breathing under the water and she crossed the deep river that way.
The deep blue river was beautiful despite the corruption that had leaked into it from the sides. She came a few inches away from a river serpent, and reached out to touch its scales. The majestic beast didn't mind, she wasn't bothering it. Furia passed schools upon schools of piranha and regular fish. She came across a small ring in the river, a wedding ring, and picked it up. The diamond still sparkled after she cleaned the algae and gunk off of it with her thumb.
As she came out of the water on the other side of the river, she thought back on the journey and wondered what it was like in the deep ocean. Seeing massive sea beast after sea beast swimming gracefully in the deep. Furia would have told them what it was like under the water, but silence was part of the method of survival. Instead she just dried out her gear and armor, sitting on the embankment with her team nearly naked. The rest of the team had crossed the river by hastily constructed rafts, then dismantled them. They were glad for the breather that she granted them to air out her gear, and glad for the view. Though Furia didn't mind them looking at her occasionally to see if she had moved, she would have minded if one of her team members happened to be a pig.
None of them were pigs. They were professional soldiers, and had better things to watch out for while she was vulnerable and naked. After her gear dried she put it all back on, and they started moving again. She was a slave driver when it came to moving the men on to a different location. The team always got to where they were going without incident, and they had written up their report by the end of the first week, camped just outside the neutral zone of Kel'alee.
They were going to go into town in a couple days and see about the tournaments.
We lived our lives in our paradise, As gods we shaped the world around. No borderlines we'd stay behind, Though balance is something fragile. While we thought we were gaining, We'd turn back the tide, it still slips away. Our time has run out, our future has died, There's no more escape.
